The SpaceDo you want a rustic and romantic getaway? Or are you looking for some peaceful self-time away from it all, to recharge the soul? Are you a nature lover, looking to take hikes, and explore the nearby Appalachian trails? Or looking for a home base retreat from where you can enjoy a fun-filled family holiday, filled with swimming, horse-riding, canoeing, and hiking? If so, then this place may be the perfect spot for you...
Our 3 bedroom 1 1/2 bath family passive solar home is situated a top a hill with beautiful views of nature all around whether you are sitting inside or outside. Depending on the season, you will see mountains, pastures, woodlands, or a pond. The house is just a few mins car ride (or 20 mins walk) from the charming town of Pawling with a variety of shops, galleries and restaurants. The style of the house is open plan style with a wall of sliding glass doors facing south from the living room overlooking the grounds. The main floor of the house includes a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, a full bathroom, plus a bedroom (a queen bed with a new pillow top mattress) with sitting area, In the living room is a wood burning fireplace, CableTV (43" flat screen), and DVD. WIFI is available and we have a washer and dryer.
The upstairs has 2 bedrooms (one room has 2 twin beds and the other has a king size bed) and a half bathroom. The bedroom with the king size bed has thick floor to ceiling drapes for one wall, instead of french doors (which the other 2 bedrooms have). We love this feature as we can draw them open to create a very airy, light room, but drapes as a door may not be for everyone. The hallway outside the bedrooms has a balcony which overlooks the main floor below. The main floor has a deck outside with a space for outdoor dining, watching wildlife (chipmunks, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, deer, bluejays, woodpeckers, cardinals, finches), enjoying the views and clear starlit nights. The home is down a quiet driveway with parking for several cars. Guest AccessPotential to have access to car/truck The NeighborhoodPawling is an outdoor paradise. In addition to private hunting preserves, like the Pawling Mountain Club, there are several public parks to enjoy. Lakeside Park, a 300-acre town park, has tennis courts, hiking trails and a 40-acre lake. Even bigger than Lakeside, the 1,000-acre Pawling Nature Preserve on Quaker Hill Road is crisscrossed by hiking trails, including a portion of the Appalachian Trail. There is even an Appalachian Trail stop on Metro-North.
The Village of Pawling is small and charming. It has a variety of shops, including a good independent bookstore called the Book Cove and a popular restaurant and bakery called McKinney & Doyle.
Also take time to enjoy the new village green and pavilion, with its trees, flowers, red-brick pathways, and black Victorian-style street lamps. And don't miss the Green Farmers market, delivering the finest fresh produce, specialty foods, and wines the Hudson Valley has to offer, on Saturdays in summer.
The Quaker Hill section of the town, where our house is located, sits alongside vast estates and open space.
The Oblong Trail Association of Pawling has developed an equestrian and pedestrian trail network, which has over 100 miles of bridle and walking trails through the eastern hills of Pawling.
Pawling is home to the nine-hole Dutcher Golf Course, one of the oldest public places to hit the links in the U.S.
