The SpaceOur neighborhood has a truly unique history. It's the creation of Kate Gleason, an early feminist, entrepreneur, engineer, and a protege of Susan B. Anthony. Kate designed the French, Dutch and English workers cottages as an alternative to tenements, and called her community 'Marigold Gardens'. She built with poured concrete -- which Thomas Edison famously also tried but failed to accomplish -- designing her own pouring equipment, and finishing with stucco hand-thrown by newly-arrived Italian masons (whose ancestors built medieval cathedrals). The human-scale cottages were an instant 'hit', and original owners handed them down to family rather than sell. The previous owner of our cottage said, 'As soon as I moved in, I knew I wanted to live in the house the rest of my life' (and she did). Guest AccessThe apartment is private and self-sufficient, located in the quiet back half of the house with a picture window overlooking lawn & trees.
The kitchen, breakfast nook, livingroom & bathroom are on the first floor; upstairs there's an L-shaped slant-ceiling bedroom. Sleeping set-up is: queen upstairs sleeps 2, daybed downstairs sleeps 1, and a cot in the upstairs nook of the "L" sleeps a child. The kitchen is equipped with (small) fridge, stove, oven, microwave, coffee & tea pots, dishes & cutlery. If you'd like it stocked with breakfast things, I'll be happy to accommodate, at cost, with advance notice including your dietary preferences. A desk in the living room houses maps, phone books, and brochures describing local attractions. Note the pool is not always open -- please inquire if it's important to you. Please note, too, we hope to put in a flat-screen tv soon, but as of now you will find a tube model, so if watching sports or movies on a big screen is your 'thing', sorry, search on. Interaction with GuestsI'll most likely be on site to welcome you and give you the keys. I enjoy taking care of people, but leave it to my guests whether they wish to interact or to have their privacy. The NeighborhoodEast Rochester still has an old-fashioned, family-friendly vibe, with a Landmark post office that's the gossip hub. It's walkable (once you negotiate the expressway ramp -- which we never stop lobbying to reduce), with restaurants nearby.
We're around the corner from St. John Fisher (where the Buffalo Bills hold their open-to-the-public pre-season practice camp) and Nazareth Colleges; and we've often hosted families with offspring at the Univ. of Rochester and RIT.
It's a short drive to Pittsford's Schoen Place along the historic Erie Canal, w/rides on a paddlewheel, feeding the ducks, kayaking, shopping boutiques, and evening open-air concerts. Rochester hosts an array of festivals: the world-famous Lilac Festival, the International Jazz Festival, the Corn Hill Arts Festival, the Memorial Art Gallery Clothesline Festival, and a number of film festivals (to honor hometown George Eastman House), to name but a few. The area has an embarrassment of parks, Seabreeze amusement park on Lake Ontario, swimming and a carousel at Charlotte beach. Naples in the Finger Lakes wine country is only an hour's drive.
GeVa Theater, Garth Fagan Dance, the Rochester Philharmonic are a few of our area's impressive arts & cultural headliners. Winter brings to the fore nearby skiing (Bristol Mountain downhill & Mendon Ponds cross-country). The holidays usher in 'Nutcracker' performances, and a candlelight & horse-drawn sleigh shopping evening along Pittsford's main streets. Other Things to NoteAs anyone who owns an historic property knows, upkeep is a forever challenge. Your stay with us helps support the only Kate Gleason community still extant. (Kate started another in San Francisco but the city took her land for the Golden Gate Bridge; she finished another in Beaufort, South Carolina but it was destroyed in a hurricane.)
We operated as a B&B with (URL HIDDEN) for 5 years, and had the pleasure of accommodating dozens of wonderful guests. (You will find guest books signed during those years in the apartment desk.) We look forward to the possibility of accommodating your visit.
