The NeighborhoodPOUGHKEEPSIE: Home to 4 colleges (Vassar, Marist, Dutchess Community & The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park), Poughkeepsie is both a college town and a city in transition with a diverse blue collar urban community. With close proximity to restaurants and cultural destinations, Poughkeepsie allows you to experience the conveniences of “small city” life while only being a 10 minute drive from the country. A historic industrial port city, Poughkeepsie is currently going through an exciting resurgence, characterized by a grassroots local food movement, farm-to-table restaurants, and a number of revitalization projects, including the renowned Walkway Over the Hudson, the world’s longest pedestrian bridge spanning the width of Hudson River. The Walkway connects the Dutchess County and Ulster County rail trails, making Poughkeepsie a destination for bike enthusiasts. Vassar College and the city’s south side also make for wonderful bike routes with cute residential streets, historic homes, and lots of trees. We love Poughkeepsie for its diversity – its people, its culture – and the way it encompasses the full socio-economic spectrum, from its pristine college campuses to the developing commercial zone and restaurant scene in the historic main street corridor. Poughkeepsie is an exciting place with a unique energy, and an ideal home base for experiencing the rest of the Historic Hudson Valley. THE NEIGHBORHOOD: Gray Street, where the guest house is located, is a residential, tree-lined street in a transitioning neighborhood 5 minutes from Vassar College. The neighborhood is a blend of everything from young entrepreneurs, academics, government workers, tradespeople and low income families. The guest house sits across from Forbus Butternut Park, a 1-acre greenspace overseen by a local non-profit. There is a church on the other side of the park, and the Poughkeepsie High School and football field is about 2 blocks away. During the day, kids sometimes play in the street, but for the most part it's very quiet since Gray Street isn’t a major thoroughfare. AROUND THE REGION: Because Poughkeepsie is centrally located, it makes for a great jumping off point to explore the rest of the Hudson Valley region. Towns like Beacon, New Paltz, Rosendale, Millbrook, Hyde Park and Rhinebeck are all within an easy drive with lots of things to see along the way. Hudson, The Catskills, Cold Spring, Phoenicia and the Berkshires all make for wonderful day trips – full of meandering country drives, antiquing, hiking, fishing, wine-tasting, museum-hopping, or cooling off in a swimming hole. I run a blog that’s dedicated to travel, food and culture in the region called An Upstate of Mind, and I’m happy to send along recommendations for our favorite spots tailored around whatever you like to do. The surrounding Upstate NY towns are lovely, but to make for a full day, it’s sometimes good to combine a few destinations into a “mini road trip” that lets you soak in the local flavor and experience the sprawling natural settings the Hudson Valley is known for. Getting AroundIt's best to have a car in upstate NY since it’s more of a driving culture, and it’ll be easier to explore the area. Poughkeepsie is small enough that it’s walkable, but it’s not really set up with a main shopping district like you would find in a small town where you just walk over to Main Street to pick up whatever you need. It’s more like you have to drive 5 minutes in one direction, 10 minutes in another – that sort of thing. Poughkeepsie has cab companies, but they’re not as sophisticated or reliable as the ones in NYC (think: mini vans with air fresheners). Doable but not ideal. If you’re taking the Metro North train or Amtrak from NYC, there are always cabs at the station if you need them (about $6-8 from the station to the house / 5-minute drive). On foot, the house is a bit of a hike to and from the train station (30 minute walk uphill from the station to the house / 20 minute walk downhill from the house to the station). If you don’t have a car, you might want to reserve a rental and pick it up when you arrive. Poughkeepsie has a number of car rental companies to choose from, including Enterprise, Avis, etc. Poughkeepsie is a bike-friendly town, so feel free to bring your bikes. You can store them inside the apartment in the breezeway/mudroom. Other Things to NoteDiscount weekly & monthly rates available. On-site laundry machines available for weekly & monthly guests. GUESTS TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN: Due to our collection of artwork, antiques and furnishings, we've opted for a no child policy. We love children, but the guest house is not baby-proofed or set up for kids. That said, we have made concessions for guests traveling with mature children and babies in the past. We are completely open to working with you to see if the guest house is a good fit.

The SpacePlease read my entire listing so everything is clear to you . Entire house means all except the master suite . We will be available to interact with you if we happen to be home . We have our own space set up in the master suite . We do not share your bathrooms as we have our own . We do go into the yard and deck and shed to maintain the pool and yard frequently and also share the yard and kitchen & grill with guests . I may seem like I am repeating myself ... But I must be clear that we live in the home and when we book the entire house we are very attentive to guests but make ourselves scarce and mostly stay in our private suite or go out and or travel ourselves . Location is great! Neighborhood is wonderful! Large living room for use. Do not swim alone in the pool . Do not dive in the low end . You could die or be seriously injured. Do not swim after dark . Do not swim under the influence. Large yard in a nice family sub division. Kitchen is fully stocked with needed utensils and wares. Along with three queen size beds there are two queen sized air mattresses and two couches with make the total for 12 to sleep ! : ) Guest AccessPool use seasonally. Laundry use . Kitchen use.
