Summit Splendor in Balsam North Carolina is located in the Smokey Mountains and only 2 1/2 hrs north of Atlanta and 45 minutes West of Asheville. Our 5 bedroom 3 bathroom cabin (sleeps 11 in beds and has a queen sleeper sofa) is a two story home with a large porch and a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Parkway & Mount Lynn Lowry. Our cabin sits on a ridge line approx. 4,000 ft above sea level. There is a wonderful breeze that blows most of the time. Our cabin is great for large families or multiple families that want to vacation together. Our guests enjoy the peace and tranquility of rocking on the porch and enjoying the view as well as getting out and doing all there is to do in Western NC. Balsam History - Balsam was a tourist stop on the Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina Railroad, later the Southern Railway. In the early 20th century, tourists would travel from Asheville to the train depot at Balsam and stay at just up the hill at the Balsam Mountain Inn. Today, the depot no longer stands at the original site but was moved up the ridge, in the 1960s, to a private location and the original siding sees little use by the Norfolk Southern Railway. Balsam Mountain Inn, renovated in 1990 and refurbished in 2004 is still in operation, serves as a nostalgic reminder of a by-gone era with a great restaurant and wine list. Another notable building, Knight's Store, stands near where the depot once stood at the bottom of the hill the Balsam Mountain Inn sits on. The building was built in the early 1900s and closed in 1979. Balsam is a wonderful mountain community. The community of Willets is located near Balsam and is sometimes confused as being a part of Balsam, though it is not. Balsam once had several stores, churches, houses, the Balsam Mountain Inn, its own Depot and School, but most remaining buildings are faded memories of what once was. The construction of 4-Lane US 74/23 in the 1970s cut into the community, caused the demolition of several buildings, and further opened Balsam to the outside world. Today it is largely a bedroom community for Sylva and Waynesville. The stores are all long closed though a few of the old store buildings still stand and the schools were consolidated into Scotts Creek Elementary in 1951. The mills are long closed and demolished. Balsam still has a post office and its inn. Balsam Depot was moved up a hill in the 1960s and became a house. Balsam is a shadow of the thriving small tourist town it was from the 1890s up until the 1930s.

This home was built by a famous Tampa surgeon whose daughter recently published his love letters to his wife while he was overseas during the war. You can feel the love they shared as soon as you walk into the home and immediately see the blue ridge parkway!. It is a spacious 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath home with fantastic security system for those who come to stay by themselves. The house includes a huge rock fireplace, screened in porch with yoga mats and work out equipment, huge deck, with both gas grill and weber, game room with pool table, big screen tvs, futon, reclining furniture and more. The house is on an acre plus with woods catering to privacy. Enjoy football in the comfy leather recliners, toasting in front of the fireplace, and enjoying the views. Enjoy a nice breakfast on the deck while watching the sunrise in the mornings. Home is on "Mount Lyn Lowery" of the Lowery Park Zoo in Tampa with a 60 foot cross at the top for their daughter who died of leukemia at age 15. On the night of August 6, 1964, they flipped a switch and turned on the lights that have lit up the cross ever since. One year later, the famed western North Carolina-based evangelist Billy Graham traveled to the cross to offer dedication. For more information on the history google: The Story of Mount Lyn Lowery. Many have bought homes on this mountain during times of transition like myself and have found great peace and healing.
