Tell me a little bit about you and the other guest(s) traveling with you? What brings you to Brevard this year? Have you been there before? How many people are in your party? Are any children? If so, please include their ages. While we've been renting "Adele's Retreat" online since 2009, and our house has been reviewed often, we use another site more. If you search Adele's Retreat, you'll find more reviews to read. Guest AccessGuests have access to the entire 3 bedroom ranch style (single level) home). A fenced back yard, fully equipped kitchen, a high efficiency washer and front loading dryer, and a single car garage. Interaction with GuestsPlease don't hesitate to contact us. We are happy to answer questions and provide guidance as desired. The NeighborhoodWe love the quiet street, close proximity to town, and friendly neighbors. It is most important to us that people know what they are getting before they arrive so their expectations are met or (we hope) exceeded. We've been renting our house since right after our daughter was born in 2009. The neighborhood is safe and many of our guests enjoy walking. They often remark on the friendliness of the neighbors and the community spirit. Directly next door on one side of our house is a retiree, on the other is a peaceful, private, family garden. Overall the neighborhood is quiet, but there are sometimes children playing in the streets and the occasional family gathering. Unlike gated communities (like at Cashiers, Connestee, etc.), Brevard is a mixed income, working-class mountain town. Our neighborhood is diverse and has individually owned, single family homes. The neighbors all work in Brevard or adjacent towns – or are retirees. One of the houses down the street has a bit of “mountain character”, but in general it's a well kept neighborhood where people take pride in their homes. *Please do email or call me immediately if you find this description does not match your experience in our home.* Getting AroundYou can walk to town from here, but a car is generally recommended for this area of the country. Other Things to NoteWe are open to trading a stay in our home for a stay in yours, in the US or abroad. We cannot share contact information here without a rental arrangement, but are easily searchable online.

Come and stay in our Downtown Brevard Cottage. Walk to great local restaurants such as the Hobnob, Marco Trattoria ( 5 minutes ) and Square Root ( 9 minutes ). Our cottage is a three bedroom, two bath home nicely located a block away from Main Street down a quiet side street in Brevard, NC, a college town nestled on the edge of Pisgah National Forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains! Stroll the numerous antique and specialty stores along Main Street ( 1 block away ). Have breakfast at Rocky's Grill and Soda Shop ( 10 minute walk ), and afterwards, take the kids to OP Taylors on Main Street, a two story old fashioned toy shop packed to the rafters with fascinating things for children and adults alike. Watch movies on our netflix enabled smart TV, or cast your favorite youtube videos to the TV with your laptop when hanging around at the cottage. To see the latest movies, mozy on over to the 'Co-ed Cinema' on Main street by foot, just a 7 minute walk. If it's time for a drink, Dugan's pub is a 13 minute walk (Square Root has a bar too!), and if you want to keep going in that direction, Brevard College is just across the street from the pub. You will love our brevard cottage, not just for it's convenient location in quaint downtown Brevard, but for it's comfort and amenities too. The cottage sleeps six with our king, queen and two single beds. On winter evenings, relax by the gas log fire, and when not walking the neighborhood, the cottage is close to the natural scenic wonders of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is located in Transylvania County, known as the land of the waterfalls. Asheville's Airport is only 19 miles away, not bad when you need to get rid of a relative fast! You can be driving on scenic HWY 276 through Pisgah National Forest in just nine minutes, following the Davidson river (great for tubing) on the way to the Blue Ridge Parkway......Stop at Sliding Rock as you pass by for some fun in the water on a warm summer day. Visit the Pisgah Inn for lunch and marvel at the views from the restaurant. Later, drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway towards Asheville and stop at the Biltmore House to see how we should be living....you know, some design ideas for your own place....perhaps add a new wing to the abode? Gothic anyone? The cottage has a king size bed and an ensuite master bathroom, one queen and two single beds. For longer stays, the washer and dryer will come in handy. If you are the out-doorsy type, sip a glass of wine and have a cookout on the gas grill on the private back deck while enjoying the cool summers and mild winters this part of the North Carolina mountains offer. If you need a break from cooking up a storm in the well equipped, gourmet cottage kitchen, and just want to order a hand made pizza from a wood burning oven, Marco Trattoria an Italian restaurant is only a five minute walk, ( 1 min by car ) one block away on Main street, next to Hobnob. If you or the kids have a sweet tooth, there are at least two iced-cream shops nearby, one 'Downtown Chocolates' is next to the Square Root. You can walk to several grocery stores that are close by, but four minutes in the car to Ingles, and you can avoid lugging that delicious sliced ham home. The weekly farmers market every Saturday in summer is a must do destination for the serious cultural browser, located just off East Main Street, near Quotations Coffee Cafe, a 12 minute walk ...... past the court house. Bring your dog so he or she can meet all the other dogs who brought their owners to be market! If you are not there on a Saturday, the region boasts a huge farmers market where every chef worth their salt will be found. This is Asheville's WNC Farmers Market, and is detailed in our cottage handbook for visitors which you receive with your access instructions when you have booked. If horse riding and waterfalls is your thing, visit Shoal Creek Horse Farm for a guided ride through the Dupont State Forest (23 minutes away) on a friendly horse...I rode Joker, my nine year old daughter rode Duke (say hi for us) winter or summer.....check the handbook for contact details. You can visit some of the spectacular waterfalls such as Bridal Veil Falls, High Falls, Hooker Falls and Triple Falls to name a few while in Dupont State Forest.....a truly spectacular natural resource. Speaking of quaint little towns, downtown Asheville is only 46 minutes away, and is a wonderful place to visit. There is a phenomenal Antique Tobacco Barn there too that is worth exploring. As you look around our brevard cottage, you will see a few items from the Antique Tobacco barn. With five national and state parks nearby, there is an endless potential for sightseeing, hiking, day tripping, biking and watersports such as tubing, white water rafting and fishing in the surrounding area. The area also boasts a vibrant music scene, and know that the cottage is located near the road to the Brevard Music Center. Every surface in our Brevard Cottage is new and state of the art from the seamless shower enclosures to the gourmet kitchen and natural gas fireplace. People actually drive down Maple St. just to watch for white squirrels! It's a "throwback" neighborhood where children and dogs play and all the houses are unique. My family moved to this house in 1989 and raised two children. It's a very safe and friendly neighborhood. Getting AroundIt's a short walk to the downtown area where there are lots of nice restaurants, a bakery, a brewery, boutique shops, toy store etc. Hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing.....all close by because we're at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest and the French Broad River. The SpaceThe red chalet is located 6 miles from downtown Brevard, 7 miles from the entrance to Pisgah National Forest and 15 miles from Dupont State Forest. The large back deck, with hammock, and gas grill is up high, surrounded by trees, providing a treehouse-like feel. Step inside to the main living area (with a gable wall of windows, overlooking the deck)— half of which is set up as a living room and half of which holds a large farm table that seats 8. Behind the dining table is a small kitchen with two stools at the counter, a brand new gas range and a refrigerator. Just behind the kitchen are two adjacent bedrooms—one with a queen-sized bed and one with a king-sized bed. Just next to the bedrooms is a small, updated, full-size bathroom with shower and tub. *Upstairs is a large open loft that is my home office that is not part of the rental deal. It contains a half bath that can be used if necessary. Outside, below the main deck is another small deck. And below that is a private little stone patio. There is a fire pit located up in the center of the driveway that you are welcome to use, but you have to keep it quiet late night because it is right next to the next-door neighbors house. The house is on an acre, but it is not fenced in and there is one neighbor pretty close by. There is a 10x10 dog kennel located just off the driveway that you can use if necessary, but only if your dogs don't bark or if you have bark collars. It is very close to the neighbor's house. Guest AccessGuests can access all areas of the home, decks, yard and parking that have been mentioned. As mentioned, the upstairs loft is my home office and is not part of the rental. There is not a way to close it off, so you must respect my space, on the honor system. Additionally there is a crowded, cluttered basement that houses the washer and dryer and a little space for your bikes, etc that you can have access to if you ask ahead of time. If you do not ask ahead of time, the basement (and therefor washer/dryer and storage space) will be locked-off. Remember to mention you need basement access, and your reason, before or during the time we arrange your access, so that I can give you the additional key. I live in the house full time, so I have food stored in the fridge, freezer and pantry. You are welcome to use the basics such as olive oil, salt, pepper and spices, and condiments. If you need to use something more substantial, either replace it, or leave a few bucks for it with a note, please. Guests may use the fire pit in the driveway area. Interaction with GuestsWhen you rent the home, I vacate the space to make it available, and it varies where I go during that time. If you will need assistance, I will have a close friend appointed to help out if I am out of town. If I stay locally, I can help out with things as needed. The NeighborhoodThe red chalet is located 6 miles from downtown Brevard, 7 miles from the entrance to Pisgah National Forest and 15 miles from Dupont State Forest. It is in a beautiful setting on a private, dead-end road. The neighborhood is quiet and low traffic, but there is a next door-neighbor. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation up to the house, and it would be a long walk to town. Cyclists may enjoy biking from here, but you have a steep climb for the last mile to get you back to the house. You will need a car. There is plenty of parking, probably for four or five cars. My road (and driveway) is gravel, but it is very short. Every road up to it is paved. Other Things to NoteI live in the home full-time with my dog, but we will be gone during your stay. The house will be fully cleaned before you arrive, but it is impossible to get up every last dog hair no matter how hard I try. This home may not be the best option for those with an allergy to dogs or for people who prefer a more sterile environment. I have the check-in time set to 3PM, so that I have time to clean before your arrival. If you need to check-in early, let me know well in advance of your arrival date to see if arrangements can be made for me to clean the day before. Check-out time is noon, but this can be flexible if needed. Just talk to me in advance. Also, if you know you will be leaving earlier than noon, please let me know in advance so I can plan to return earlier. And I ask that you send a message when you take off so that I know it is okay to come back. The kitchen is stocked with plates and bowls for 4. If you are going to have more guests for a meal, you will need to bring your own dish set. Other than dishes, there are griddles, pots, pans, a Vitamix and utensils to suit most needs. There is a small, Italian stovetop Moka pot for making coffee, a French Press, a coffee grinder and a cheapo electric coffee maker. I do not provide coffee or snacks, so please bring your own. Many guests have commented that they loved how well-appointed the kitchen is. Foodies should be happy. Although it is small, it is has what you need. Note that there is no microwave nor toaster oven, but a two-slice toaster. There is no television. There is a projector and projector screen. You can bring your own laptop or Apple TV to connect to the projector via HDMI. There is an set of speakers you can plug into your laptop or tablet. If you are bringing an Apple TV please let me know in advance if you will need the speaker with optical audio (I do not keep it out because I stopped using my Apple TV). I have a large airline style dog crate available if you need it to leave your dog in while you are out. Please let me know in advance if you would like me to have it ready for you.

I cook fresh homemade pasta pretty much every night, so if you would like dinner please just tell me in advance. A little about the host: I grew up in a military family, so I have traveled and lived all over the world. I also was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Africa. I am a master scuba diver, a private pilot, and love wild mushroom hunting. I am very easy going and pleasant to be around, but do work late night shifts at a local pub here in town, and like to stay very busy. The NeighborhoodAll of the neighbors are very friendly. The neighborhood is so quiet and peaceful you will actually be surprised that you are so close to downtown, yet so far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. Getting AroundThere is no public transit, however if arriving by air there are rental cars available at the airport, also the house is conveniently located in town to be considered a great start and finish point for a long bike ride. All of Brevard is within walking distance of the house. Other Things to NoteAccess to the house is by electronic pass-code that will be provided in a private email before your arrival along with instructions. Due to the lack of interests by guests, breakfast is a very simple offering. A variety of breakfast cereals will be provided with 1% and whole milk available in the fridge. If you would like to cook a hot breakfast, feel free to grab some eggs out of the fridge and cook them to your liking. I have chickens that produce tons of eggs, so feel free to cook up some in the mornings during your stay. After you are finished please just leave dishes in the sink and I will attend to them when I get home. I have a two cats Legs and Lexi. They are outdoor cats, but comes inside at night to sleep in my room, and in the morning he goes back out. They are never allowed access to the guest bedroom, so if you have allergies, it shouldn't be much of an issue. They are very friendly and loving, but if you would like them to stay out of your room, please just keep the door shut at all times. Please do not feed them anything outside of his treats/cat food. First Aid Kit is located in the mirror cabinet above the sink in the guest bathroom. Includes: Alcohol, gauze, band-aids, triple antibiotic ointment, and Ibuprofen.
