The SpaceOur High Valley House is a wonderful place that has been our family home for the last 9 years. Love at first site is what made us buy it and will make you glad that you are here. Sit in the porch swing or hammock and take in the miles-long view, or enjoy it through the large windows that surround the house. Better yet, join up around the fire-pit or soak in the hot tub. Easy access to a 4-lane Highway, but very secluded. Close to the NOC, whitewater, Tsali mountain biking, Appalachian Trail, Lake Fontana, Tail of the Dragon for motorcycles, Smoky Mountain National Park, and the Cherokee Casino. The house layout works great for separating the guests. The master bedroom is on the main level with a Queen bed and the jetted tub with windows to the world. Downstairs, there is the King bedroom, the Double bedroom, and a Kids room with a dual twin bed trundle. There is also a separate bathroom and laundry downstairs. Outside exits from both ends of the downstairs give you easy access to the yard and hot tub. You relax upstairs and put the kids and in-laws downstairs, or switch. Everyone can re-group on the main level with the open kitchen that is great for visiting and enjoying the views out the over-size windows. If you are in the area to ride your motorcycle on the amazing mountain roads, this house will make a great central base for exploring. There is a huge covered area under the front deck that you can ride into and out of. There is only a short stretch of level gravel road coming into the neighborhood, otherwise all pavement access including the driveway. Cyclists will appreciate the covered bike wash area to work on and leave their bikes Fisherman will enjoy the easy access to the Nantahala and Little Tennessee Rivers and Lake Fontana. There are great quiet walks right from the house and folks with a little adventure can even hike all the way down to the Nature Conservancy tracts of the Needmore Tract on the Little Tennessee River. All this, yet the house is very easy to access and is only 15 minutes from Bryson City.

The SpaceThe house is located in a peaceful neighborhood. Other than a few planned improvements (AC for one - the house was built at a time when AC was rare and the cool mountain air was relied upon), the house provides all the modern appliances and amenities. Although the address is listed as Whittier, it is located on the Qualla Boundary, aka the Cherokee Indian Reservation (held in trust by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians whose ancestors were able to avoid the terrible Trail of Tears launched by President Andrew Jackson in 1838). The owner of the house was Bill J. Ledford, beloved Elder and former Vice-Chief of the Tribe. Bill was also former Police Chief, Fire Chief, and Council Member. He was known for his willingness to help others, his progressive outlook, his friendliness marked by a very witty sense of humor and a wonderful smile (on the front page of the One Feather that reported his recent passing, the headlines read "Leader With a Smile"). Bill and I were married for 16 years. The home was built in the early 1970s and overlooks the Oconaluftee River. Guest AccessThe whole house is yours except for one room that is used for storage. Please enjoy the surrounding five acres -- that's where you'll see the nicest views. Interaction with GuestsIt depends on our schedules whether we will be able to meet our guests. We generally like to give people their space. However, please be assured we'll be available if you have questions or if you need anything. The NeighborhoodAs stated the house is just minutes from the Oconaluftee River and is located in the Birdtown Community of Cherokee. Bryson City, just 15 minutes away traveling West on Highway 19, is a nice place to visit if you might enjoy a small, quaint town with the Smoky Mountain Railroad running the show. Everett Street Diner and Anthony's Pizza are very popular restaurants. Downtown Cherokee is 5 - 10 minutes heading East on Highway 19. There you'll find an abundance of shops, the very cool Cherokee Museum, and the Oconaluftee River Park. Lots of folks come to Cherokee to watch the outdoor drama "Unto These Hills" and visit the Oconaluftee Indian Village, which strives to recreate Cherokee life during the 18th century. One of our favorite spots is the Mountain Farm Museum located just outside of Cherokee in the Smoky Mountain National Park. There you'll see farm animals, a log farmhouse, barn, springhouse, smokehouse, and a working blacksmith shop. It gives you an idea how people in this area lived over 100 years ago. What's really neat is the walking trail from the park to Cherokee -- it's about three miles to and from Cherokee and it follows the beautiful Oconaluftee River. Chances are you'll see some type of friendly wildlife -- most likely the magnificent elk that are making a comeback in the area. Getting AroundThere is plenty of parking space on the property despite the fact Bill's favorite work truck is parked there. Other Things to NoteAs with all communities there are things to watch out for. During the summer insects will pester any human it encounters. During the winter driving the curvy, mountainous roads after snow or ice storms is probably not a good idea. And since Cherokee is a tourist destination it is always good to be wary of those who like to take advantage of tourists. Lastly, a good piece of advice: Many of you may already know this, but when you visit downtown Cherokee it's probably not a great idea to tell the locals your great-grandparent was Cherokee. Why? Because they get inundated by such comments and become weary after hearing them so much. While it's very admirable to be proud of such heritage and while Cherokee offers lots of resources for researching and learning about one's Cherokee roots, many locals nonetheless are skeptical about such claims. Just wanted to be up front about that.

The SpaceThis ain't Granny's mountain cabin! There are 3 loft-style cabins on the site of the Watershed Resort property near Bryson City and Cherokee, NC. Surrounded by woods yet minutes to the area attractions, these units will bring city hipsters to the mountains just to experience the style. The Watershed Resort property is a 50 acre tract with community "yard" area that enjoys bocce ball and other yard games as well as an amazing sunset view from our "log-zebo" bedswing. The SpaceThe view from our cabin on Fontana Ridge is spectacular -- one of the best on the mountain. We look down on the Tuckasegee River and out to the Smoky Mountains. The roads are paved all the way up the mountain, which makes for easy access all year long. Our cabin is on five acres of forested land. My family created a retreat for our family and friends, with comfort and family fun in mind. Multiple levels with extra use rooms allow us to spread out so we don't have that "on top of each other" feeling, yet the cabin is cozy and comfortable when everyone gathers together. All the bedrooms are furnished with real beds with deep mattresses and solid dressers and tables. The master bedroom is nestled under the peak of the A-frame on the top floor. Windows and doors open to the outside deck and the loft space next to the room, which, along with the ceiling fans, allows good circulation. The spacious room easily accommodates the king sized bed and furniture without feeling cramped. Step outside onto the private deck to watch the sunset or come in and read in the loft sitting area outside the bedroom. The sofa in the loft area pulls out into a bed for your extra guests. The deck wraps around two sides of the main living area and that's where we spend most of our time in the summer. The covered space means you can enjoy the view even in the rain while the uncovered side opens to the sun and moon. We take most of our meals on the picnic table on the deck but there is a large dining table just inside the French doors. There are two bedrooms on this floor (one queen, one double bed), the bathroom, the great room, kitchen and dining area. In keeping with our goal of comfort, the plush seating in the great room includes four recliners. There is a flat screen tv with DiretTV and a wood burning fireplace. The floor plan is open, with a partial wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the space. The kitchen includes microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven in addition to a large stand up refrigerator/freezer and full stove. We have designated the downstairs as the gaming rooms, providing a pool table, two tvs, a DVD player and many family games, from dice to cards to board games, These are stored in a cabinet in the large game room and are available to everyone, along with a handful of paperback books and DVDs. The room with the pool table and tv has two small cafe tables and we think of it as the grown-up game room. The kids' game room has a high, cafe style game table, a daybed, bean bag chair, tv and DVD player, and a giraffe. The giraffe is my brother's touch of whimsey and although we know it doesn't belong in the mountains, the kids like it. This lower level also has a laundry room with a washer and dryer and a sink. There's a door to the parking area on this level. Guest AccessGuests will have full access to the house except for one locked closet. *** UPDATE *** DUE TO DROUGHT CONDITIONS, THE LAUNDRY ROOM HAS ALSO BEEN LOCKED. We apologize for the inconvenience but this necessary to conserve water. Interaction with GuestsThis is our vacation home so we will not be around during your stay. The NeighborhoodWe are above the Tuckasegee River in Bryson City. Be warned -- people come here and never want to leave. There are many "transplants" in Bryson City, which has given the town a unique atmosphere. Traditional mountain life meets outdoors adventure. There is river rafting, tubing, kayaking. Zip lining, hiking, biking. Small town crafts, thrift stores, and fine arts. The Smoky Mountain railroad depot is downtown. Bryson City is the perfect home base for exploring Western North Carolina and Tennessee. Easy day trips include Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Cades Cove. The Smoky Mountain Nantahala Gorge hosted the 2013 World Championships of Connie Freestyle in September. Bryson is minutes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This part of North Carolina is famous for its scenic drives. And for those wanting a break from all the scenery and outdoor activity, Asheville is an hour away. Getting AroundThere's no public transportation. You will need a car but the roads are paved and we have a large, flat parking area next to the cabin so it is easy access. Other Things to NoteNOVEMBER 2016 -- Western North Carolina is suffering from wild fire and extremely dry conditions. There is a ban on all outdoor fires, including grilling, and fires in the fireplace, as well. Fontana Ridge is on well water. All of us are sharing the same water and it is low. We have had to lock the laundry room and will be washing the linen off site. No Worries is not renting to larger parties until conditions have improved. We also urge everyone to conserve water during their visit. We have DirectTV on two of the three tvs. The third has a DVD player.

It is very motorcycle friendly. The cabin is one exit west of Bryson City, a hop skip and a jump to the Alarka boat marina, close to The Nantahala Outdoor Center, The Cherokee Casino, Oconaluftee Visitors Center where you can park and watch the elk come down from the mountains and graze in the fields. It is absolutely amazing!! Firewood is in a storage bin to the left of the stairs entering the cabin as well as a charcoal BBQ grill. Please DO NOT USE ANY ACCELERANTS TO START FIRE IN THE INSIDE FIRE PLACE/OUTSIDE FIRE PIT AT ANY TIME. (COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY). USE STARTER LOGS. PLEASE DO NOT PUT COVER FROM THE HOT TUB ON THE GROUND AT ANY TIME AS THERE IS A COVER CADDY ATTACHED TO THE SIDE OF THE TUB. If you are traveling with children, when done with the outside hot tub, please use the latches in each corner to lock the tub cover to prevent entry from children. They just snap together. The only area that is a do not touch is the dresser in the Master bathroom. Owners personal items.(drawers are locked) I love to interact with my guests. I feel that it is very important to keep an open line of communication. I would like my guests to consider staying at the cabin again. If there is anything that I can help you with, I want you to be able to call me anytime. My guests' happiness is very important me! I interact with my guests as much as possible. I enjoy it. I have been in town a few times when the cabin has been rented and had the pleasure of meeting several of my guests. Had a great time in doing so!! I wish that I could be there to meet each and everyone of you, but, unfortunately, that is not always possible. I love the ease of access to the property. Even in the winter months as it is right off of a "state maintained road". The State does a great job of keeping the roads cleared. It is peaceful and quiet, close to all the attractions, but not on top of any of the neighbors. The restaurants in town are really good. The Cork & Bean, Everett Street Diner, Jimmie Macs, Iron Skillet, Anthony's for pizza, ice cream shops and The Filling Station. Great "home made ice cream sandwiches!! They are huge and so many flavors to choose from!! YUMMY. Then going the other way, you have The Nantahala Bistro, and at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, The Rivers End which sits right above the river! Great scenery, and great food!! Parking is right on the property. There is enough room for 3 cars on the half moon driveway. You DO NOT need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the cabin. It is a very beautiful ride there and convenient to the grocery store and gas stations, as well as getting to Downtown Bryson City. I believe there is a cab service in town. The SpaceQueen Branch cottage is a special, peaceful place. The house is a traditional Appalachian farmhouse built sometime around 1880 that has been fully restored and updated with all the modern conveniences - including central heat and air. It is a very simple, comfortable home with original wood floors, beadboard walls and ceilings, and handmade wood windows - and we worked to make sure that the new kitchen cabinetry and bathroom details are in keeping with the farmhouse style. The kitchen is a simple galley style with lots of windows that look out at the woods and the creek -making it a very enjoyable place to cook with friend or family. And the dining room has a long farm table- great for communal meals. The house comfortably accommodates 6 to 7 guests. It has one bright, sunny bedroom (with one queen bed) on the main floor, and 2 bedrooms upstairs (one with a queen bed and one with a double bed) - and the futon in the upstairs family room can accommodate one person. All of the upstairs rooms are very cozy feeling with sloped beadboard walls and ceilings and views of the mountains and the creek. Guest AccessGuests have full access to the cottage, our yard, creek and pasture. And, along with the general public, access to the Little Tennessee River at Queen Branch Preserve and the adjacent State-owned Forest land. Interaction with GuestsWe live in Asheville (about 65 miles away) so we are happy to communicate by phone or email but aren't usually present to meet our guests or during their stay. The NeighborhoodThis is a wonderful, secluded and scenic area. It is a very rural area - in a river valley about 12 miles from the nearest town (Franklin). Just sitting on the front porch you can see the mist rise up from the Smoky Mountains each morning, hear the gurgle of the creek, watch the sunset, hear the birds and cicadas, and at night (in the summer) enjoy the firefly show in the front pasture. You can walk across the road to hike a short distance through an old pasture down to the Little Tennessee river - great for stone throwing, gem hunting (though we've had no luck yet), picnicking, fishing, and other river activities. Or, follow the birding path through the woods until it ends near the River. Nearby (within 5 miles) you can swim in the River at Needmore Recreation area; hike the Appalachian Trail (at Tellico Gap); go to the weekly Farmer's Market in Cowee (an historic Cherokee and former mining town); mine for local gems (this area is known for its' Rubies and Sapphires); or tube, canoe or kayak in the Little Tennessee River. Further away (but still within 20 miles) you can raft the Nantahala River; mountain bike at Tsali; tour local waterfalls near Highlands; or visit the Smoky Mountain National Park. Getting AroundThe cottage is in a very rural setting and you will need to have a car to get around in this region. Other Things to NoteThis is a "green", historic home and property. A few years ago, it was renovated to be very energy efficient and is a now certified Energy Star Home. Also, because of its history and Southern Appalachian cultural significance - this house has historic preservation easements to keep in intact for future generations. And, the Queen Branch creek and all of our property located across the creek from the house are part of a State Forest land conservancy - so it will remain "wild" to improve and encourage native plant, animal, and river habitat.
