The house was built by James N. Umstead around 1890 in the 'Queen Anne' style. The Durham Bed and Breakfast features a huge wraparound porch with 21 Tuscan columns. Dolly and Frank spent nearly three years in intensive restoration of the property and opened for business in the fall of 1990. High curved ceilings, heart-pine wainscotting, raised wood panels, nine original mantels, doors with original hardware, and all-original Southern Pine flooring will delight the historical buff. Antiques of the period are abundantly distributed throughout. The yard is fully enclosed with custom front fencing and gate. Mature floral gardens and flowering trees highlight the landscaping. The backyard is suitable for private events. There are four primary guestrooms, each with its own private bath. Each has its own distinctive character and is highlighted by antiques of the period. For the convenience of our guests we are open year-round, including major holidays, except for occasional short vacations during slower periods. Free cable and wi-fi. The inn, designated as Durham's first historic landmark, is just minutes away from Golden Belt (art colony), Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the new Performing Arts Center, Carolina Theatre, American Tobacco Campus, Brightleaf Square, and the Duke East Campus (free bus service now offered). Consider us as your 'home-away-from-home' to help make your Durham visit especially memorable! Ask about our "extended stay" options--minimum one week stay. Extra 25% discount for stays of a month or longer.

The SpaceLocated on the edge of historic Forest Hills neighborhood on a quiet, leafy, residential street, our sweet cottage is covered in vines, with many gardens, water features, grape arbor, fruit trees, and multiple patios for sitting out and watching the many birds at the feeders. Your private room is connected to the internet. The airbnb bathroom has a full shower, with soap and shampoo for guests, is sometimes shared if there is another airbnb guest. Guests are also able to use the hosts' bathroom if there is any need. Free, unrestricted and plentiful parking is on the street in front of the house. We are a mile to two miles from downtown Durham, Duke University, Duke hospital, Duke Gardens, American Tobacco, the Brightleaf District, Durham Performing Arts Center, the Durham Ballpark, and most of Durham's best restaurants. We are just a few blocks from the American Tobacco Trail, and have free loaner bikes, with helmets and locks, for our visitors. We will pick up guests for free from Amtrak or the bus station. We offer $25 pick up or drop off from RDU airport--cheaper than taxis, similar to Uber/Lyft. We also will be willing to give lifts around the downtown/Duke area for $5 if we aren't busy. We have an two friendly, mid-sized dogs who quietly welcome all guests and one large personable cat who deals with anything that comes his way. The airbnb room, however, is off limits to the pets in consideration of fur-sensitive guests. We serve gourmet, French press coffee, and fresh made muffins on your first morning. Have it on the patio in the garden! We love visitors and can help steer you to the best of Durham, including cheap eats and gourmet treats, hiking/biking trails, museums, events, and the nightlife scene. When we have airbnb guests staying in our outside cottage room, you would share the guest bathroom that is across from your room. If needed, guests can also use the other bathroom/shower in the house. When we've had double bookings we've had great luck with everyone--instant parties have formed with a bottle of wine around the dining table or out on the patio. We seem to be under some fortunate moon that brings very compatible people here -- charming, interesting, and with advanced social skills. If you're interested in our outside, more private room, look for our other listing titled "Creamsicle Cottage Near Duke+Dwntwn". (click on our profile and then look on the left for our other listings). That room is much larger and more private with microfridge and microwave for the same price, but you have to come into the main house for the bathroom/shower. The SpaceI will be in India for an extended period of time beginning January 2015. I currently have one room available for airbnb. Karen, a resident, or Jim will greet you upon arrival and you may have an opportunity to meet other guests. Your room is the largest in a 4 bedroom home located in North Durham that is backed by forest preserve and the Eno River. Located 15 minutes from Duke. Back balcony with beautiful view of the preserve and woods and deep front porch with several chairs, swings and fans for hot days. House is a mix of mid century modern with a bit of traditional thrown in. Room is 12 x 15 with king size bed, two large double closets, private bathroom with double sinks and large tub-children on a short term basis are okay. Home is situated on a dead end street in North Durham, restaurants, shops and food markets are just a short drive. Plenty of parking is available. Bus line is approx 2 miles away. If needed, transportation can be arranged to the stop. Aside from the extensive trails nearby and adjacent to our property along with 2 state parks within 5 minutes. The natural beauty surrounding the house makes it most unique and though the home was built in 1966 the entire interior was renovated 4 years ago. Guest AccessShared kitchen, living room, dining room, den, outdoors and balcony. Interaction with GuestsI try to be aware of when guests would like to have a glass of wine or cup of coffee and chat or when they need space. I'm okay with either. The NeighborhoodQuiet, dead end street on the Eno River and Forest Preserve. Getting AroundWe are not on the bus line, it's probably within 2 miles. Parking is in our drive. If you need assistance getting to and from places we can try and help. Other Things to NoteMy home is a reflection of me, I like guests to feel at home, comfortable to move through the shared spaces, garden, yard, etc. It is a treat for me to meet so many folks.

The SpaceThis is a former freestanding art studio that we've turned into a comfortable, private room with a private entrance separate from the rest of the house. It has many advantages over our other airbnb room in the house, but its disadvantage is that you have to walk 10 steps across our patio to enter the house to use the bathroom/shower. Its main advantages are its privacy, larger size (15 x 21 feet) and amenities including a queen bed, a couch/single bed, fridge/microwave, electric kettle, library table, kitchen table, and antique wardrobe. If you’d rather be inside the house, look for our other listing titled "Garden house near Duke, Downtown" (click on our profile and then look on the left for our other listings). Located on the edge of historic Forest Hills neighborhood on a quiet, leafy, residential street, our sweet cottage is covered in vines, with many gardens, water features, grape arbor, fruit trees, and multiple patios for sitting out and watching the many birds at the feeders. We are a mile to two miles from downtown Durham, Duke University, Duke hospital, Duke Gardens, American Tobacco, the Brightleaf District, Durham Performing Arts Center and the Durham Ballpark. We are just a few blocks from the American Tobacco Trail, and have loaner bikes for our visitors. We have two friendly, mid-sized dogs who quietly welcome all guests and one large personable cat who deals with anything that comes his way. The airbnb room, however, is off limits to the pets in consideration of fur sensitive guests. We serve gourmet, French press coffee, muffins, toast, or cereal on your first morning. Have it on the patio in the garden! We love visitors and can help steer you to the best of Durham, including cheap eats and gourmet treats, hiking/biking trails, secret water holes, museums and events, family fun and the nightlife scene. When your room and our other airbnb room are both booked, you would need to share the use of the guest bathroom. To avoid problems, any of our guests can use the other bathroom/shower in the house as needed. The few times we've had double bookings we've had great luck with everyone--instant parties have formed with a bottle of wine around the dining table or out on the patio. We seem to be under some fortunate moon that brings very compatible people here -- charming, interesting, and with advanced social skills. We really enjoy hosting and being a guest through airbnb, We've met some wonderful and interesting people from all over the world, some of whom have become friends and returning guests. Interaction with GuestsWe enjoy our morning coffee with our guests and have had many pleasant evenings on the patio sharing a glass of wine and hearing of their travels.
