Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is the largest city in the western half of North Carolina, with a population of roughly 85,000. Downtown is an eclectic mix of boutiques, eateries, and art galleries housed in buildings designed in art-deco, Beaux-Arts, and neoclassical styles. Asheville’s premier attraction is Biltmore, billed as the largest residential home in the United States. You can take a self-guided tour of the 250-room chateau, which was built for steamboat-and-railroad tycoon George Vanderbilt in 1895. Be sure to visit the gardens designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted—they’re in full bloom in early spring.

The SpaceBuilt around the turn of the 20th century, the Rock House was used as a hunting lodge on an estate estimated to have been over 700 acres at one point in time. Originally used as a servants quarters, the Carriage House is one of several structures on the property and the first to be renovated. The cottage has a gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances, two drawer dishwasher, and gas range/oven. There are heated tile floors in both the kitchen and in the bathroom with endless hot water in the shower. The kitchen has a remote controlled ceiling fan and both bedrooms have ceiling fans with wall controls. The large bedroom has a queen bed with a two zone heated mattress pad. The smaller bedroom has two twin beds with french doors that open onto a small deck. There is also a large covered front porch with dual burner grill, outdoor refrigerator, ceiling fan, modest herb garden (depending on the season), and plenty of seating for socializing or just soaking in the peace and serenity of the property. In the event music is desired, we have Pandora music available for streaming though Sonos for play both inside and out. Finally, the unit has dedicated WiFi as well as DirectTV with premium movie, ESPN, news, and local channels. Though the property no longer boasts over 700 acres, we are on eleven secluded acres surrounded by guest accessible orchards and woods all the while being minutes from Interstate 26. We very much hope you enjoy your stay. Guest AccessGuests are free to explore the orchards and open areas of the property but please refrain from entering other structures on the property. Interaction with GuestsWhile we do live on the property in a separate structure, the Carriage House is dedicated solely for the use of our guests and is not used as a residence. Our interaction with guests is on a per guest basis based on the extent they prefer. The NeighborhoodWe have noted some local areas of interest in the Guidebook. Getting AroundThere is limited public transportation. Other Things to NoteWe have a couple of very friendly and social cats who will more than likely stop by to visit. They do not live in the Carriage House, but they will peek in the windows and happily share the porch with you.

The SpaceDine al fresco on the covered front porch, surrounded by a beautiful garden and picket fence. Lounge on a chaise and enjoy the smells of rosemary. Respectfully restored, the cottage is the ideal of a charming historic mountain home. The original stone fireplace hardwood floors and wavy glass windows create a feeling of a by gone era. Yet all the conveniences of the present ensure a pleasurable and pampered respite. Enjoy a sidewalk stroll down idyllic 4th Avenue to town to shop and dine at the many wonderful restaurants. The master bedroom's king bed with all high thread count cotton sheets, a super soft blanket, puffy comforter and goose down feather bed is private and peaceful. The master bath features a shower/tub in natural stone tile. The charming kitchen bright and clean and is fully equipped with cookware and everything needed to prepare meals. The dining room is comfortable gathering place for meals, games and projects. The living room features a beautiful fireplace, original to the home, built from local granite and now features gas logs. There is also a new 32' flat screen with amazon fire TV and satellite too. Guest AccessMi casa es su casa. Interaction with GuestsI am just 10 minutes away if you need me. The NeighborhoodMany guests comment on how unusual it is to be so close to Main St and feel a world away with privacy, even sitting on the front porch. The neighbors' historic home across the street sits on the largest lot in town that provides the cottage with surprising privacy for an in town location. The garden creates a little oasis I think you will love. Getting AroundTo take advantage of all the hiking, cycling, kayaking, etc in the area, you will want a car. Dupont Forest is our favorite hiking spot just 25 minutes away. Other Things to NotePlease note that there is an old fashioned laundry line, not a dryer. No washer-board though, ha; we have an LG washer.

The SpaceHead down a country road to find our house, located on 1.5 park-like acres in Mills River. We are a stone's throw to Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, Pisgah National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway and miles of hiking and biking trails. We are offering our downstairs 'in-law' apartment. With a private entrance, screened porch, and beautiful scenery, you'll feel right at home. It is a 900 square foot retreat where you can get away from it all without having to go too far. Two bedrooms plus an inflatable bed means up to five can stay comfortably. A 'pack and play' is available for those little guests and the apartment is really kid friendly. There are plenty of games and books, with on-demand movies as well. A wireless internet connection rounds out the entertainment options. Linens and towels are here for you, as is a fully equipped kitchen. Laundry can be made available upon request. Feel free to store large items like bikes, kayaks, etc. in our garage. We look forward to having you stay with us. Happy Travels, Robert and Melissa Guest AccessYou are welcome to enjoy the property, but the fenced area off the back porch is where we let our dogs out. One is a Dachshund, the other is a dog of unknown pedigree...both are friendly. But, they do what dogs do. We can also make available the washer and dryer if you need to do laundry. Interaction with GuestsWe like to give our guests a lot of privacy. We live upstairs, so we are around if anything is needed. Getting AroundUnfortunately, there is no public transportation near us. Other Things to NoteThe road to our house is maintained, but not paved. Please keep your speed down as you travel along it. I mean really, what's the rush?

The SpaceWelcome to Meadowbrook Cottage, my 700 sq ft cozy in-town retreat. As a rear cottage in the historic Druid Hills district it boasts privacy, beautiful trees, wonderful birdlife and a large backyard - yet it's close to great restaurants and only a mile from downtown. Being in Hendersonville it's also close to some of the best hiking and mountain biking in the Southeast - just 30 minutes to DuPont State Forest and Pisgah National Forest. Downtown Asheville and Brevard are also just 30 minutes in either direction. The cottage itself is renovated with a new bathroom, cathedral beadboard ceiling in the bedroom and new front deck. The kitchen is stocked with a range of spices, quality cooking equipment and a gas stove. The living room has a 37" flatscreen with Apple TV and HBO Now and the bedroom has a 22" flatscreen with Blu-Ray player. Both TVs also have Netflix, Hulu, etc. (which can be signed into using your own account), and several local channels are available on the living room TV. The bedroom has a Queen bed with Tempur-Pedic mattress. A stacked washer and dryer are in a dedicated closet, and if you have work with you there is even a separate office with a desk, printer and reading nook. French doors lead from the living room to a cool screened porch (wonderful on summer evenings) and the sunny wraparound deck is a great spot for morning coffee. Guest AccessMeadowbrook Cottage is your own for the duration of your stay. All appliances and equipment are available for your use. Some personal items will be stored away unobtrusively. You are welcome to browse and read the books (largely travel and cooking-related). Interaction with GuestsI will usually be able to meet you on arrival to show you around and answer any questions you may have. I have good local knowledge (particularly about restaurants/performance venues/biking and hiking) and am happy to share and help you make the most of your stay. During your stay I will be a phone call away. The NeighborhoodDruid Hills is an Historic District designed in 1923 as an 'Olmsteadian' neighborhood (the designer of Biltmore Estate/Central Park/the Montford area of Asheville, etc). As such, there is a variety of architectural styles including Craftsman, Tudor and Colonial. The cottage was built in 1928. It's a leafy, established neighborhood with a lovely family feel and great streets for walking. It's only a mile from downtown Hendersonville, and even less to the burgeoning 7th Ave district, home to Southern Appalachian Brewery, Underground Bakery and more (I frequently bike or walk there through Patton Park). And while I get to enjoy the greenery, old trees and beautiful homes, I can walk to Papa's and Beer Mexican Restaurant in 3 minutes (and roll home after a few margaritas). Getting AroundThere is parking for 1-2 vehicles up a shared driveway (the neighbors have their own pull-in spaces and it is never blocked). Asheville airport (AVL) is 15 minutes away and local taxis are available. There is an Enterprise Car Rental depot 1 mile away. Other Things to NotePlease contact me before making a reservation; that way I can help answer any questions you may have, and if you are a non-verified member we can exchange brief introductions. I look forward to hearing from you!

The SpaceWe're on a centralized hillside location at the end of a paved, sparsely populated private road with beautiful mountain views. Your space has a private side entrance and two private decks. Large private bath with shower on the same lower level just a few steps from your room. The room is mostly windows - it's airy and light. There are no blinds, yet no one can see you. You're tucked in the trees on the side of a mountain. So if you are looking for a dark cave to sleep in late, this is probably not your place. If however, you'd like to awaken in the middle of a forest to mountain views, sunlight playing across the valley and the promise of a great day in the Blue Ridge, then this is your place! When people walk into the space, they often stop and breathe in deeply as they look around. We can feel them relax -- which is so nice! They also often say, "Oh, this is good... way better than any photo." You'll hear songbirds and tree-frogs in season. If you're lucky, you'll even get to see our white squirrels! Guest AccessAsheville Airport - 20 minutes Biltmore House - 40 minutes Flatrock Playhouse - 20 minutes Pisgah Forest - 20 minutes Dupont State Forest - 20 minutes Western NC Agricultural Ctr. - 20 Minutes Lots of GREAT restaurants - 5-15 minutes! Dozens more within 40 minutes! Interaction with GuestsWe work from home and our schedule varies. We love meeting people from all over the world! The NeighborhoodWe are in a very quiet area with almost no traffic. Our house is close to a wonderful variety of forests, waterfalls, restaurants, shops, galleries, theaters - and of course the World Famous Biltmore House and the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Getting AroundWe live twenty minutes from Asheville Airport, but we are not close to public transport - you will want to have a car. Other Things to NotePlease note: Our nightly rate varies with season, and on weekends and other lower/higher demand periods. There is no basic room price setting available to hosts to give a price RANGE. We have a tri-fold floor futon (full) and a single twin size foam mat that works for young children or teens, just FYI. Technically speaking, parents with up to five children could be accommodated. Accessories for light cooking include a coffee maker, French Press, Milk Frother, electric teapot, microwave, convection toaster oven, hotplate, and small refrigerator stocked with breakfast items. Winter breakfast offerings include local farm eggs, whole grain local breads, homemade muffins, cold cereal, hot cereal (steel cut oatmeal, kamut or gluten free creamy buckwheat) and toppings (nuts, dried fruit). Also available -- French toast, or buckwheat pancakes with nutmeg and real maple syrup. We provide coffee and tea, whole milk, and sweeteners. You'll find a wide variety of books available on the library shelves of your spacious walk-in closet as well as CDs & Movie DVDs near the TV.

The SpaceThe whole home is available for vacation rental and has two bedrooms with a queen bed and one bedroom with a twin sized trundle bed. There is a kitchen with all needed amenities (except a dishwasher) and a dining room table that seats 4-6. You might also enjoy the second story porch that feels like you are in a treehouse and the fire pit with seating for 4. Pack your marshmallows! With a large deck, lower level covered porch, main level screened porch, and fire pit area, you will never want for a place to relax! Guest AccessGuests will have access to the whole home and the second story porch in the treetops. They may also enjoy the sloped yard and surrounding trails as well as an outside deck and gas grill. Interaction with GuestsWe usually greet guests soon after arrival to assure that they were able to locate all amenities. We are happy to answer any questions that they may have regarding the property or the community. During the rest of the guests' visit our goal is to be available if we are needed but respect their privacy. The NeighborhoodOne of our favorite things about the neighborhood is the amazing waterfall across the valley that we get to see every time we drive up our scenic, winding gravel road. We also love the anticipation of what wildlife we may spot on any given day. While visiting you may see white squirrels, deer, groundhogs, woodpeckers, fox or perhaps a bear if you pay close attention. Getting AroundOur location is only 15 minutes to Hendersonville and 30 minutes to Asheville but you will feel like you are a million miles away. You must have your own transportation and please be aware that due to the elevation the neighborhood can receive heavier amounts of snow then other areas of the county in the winter. Other Things to NoteBe prepared for an occasional visit from a lady bug, a Daddy long legs when you're taking a shower or a visit from a chipmunk when you drop a french fry on the deck. You will be in the middle of the forest on a peaceful gravel road, not at the Hilton. A little bit of dust and a few critters may be a part of this opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. Also, if you are planning a group event such as a wedding or family reunion you may also wish to rent the rustic home across the street, "Heaven's Doorstep."

The apartment shares a second floor with the offices of one of Western North Carolina's best known architect-builders: Ken Gaylord Architects and Black Hawk Construction. We welcome relocation and business travelers who are interested in researching our area for potential relocation here. Come stay in our vacation rental and schedule your design/build/remodel/land consultation with our resident architect-builder! For an extra fee, business customers may rent our conference room, complete with wi-fi, a white board, telephone and large conference table. We hope visitors will appreciate the building's handsome brick facade, representing our town's best example of butter-joint brick arches and early 20th Century craftsmanship. Gaylord coined the term "Architect-Build" to describe the timeless approach to creating buildings where the architect leads both the design and construction processes to achieve buildings of artistic merit and exemplary environmental performance. Gaylord renovated the building in 2001, an investment that helped spur the renaissance of South Main Street. Many thriving businesses now share this block with us: Brandy's Restaurant (directly below the apartment), West First Wood Fired Pizza (considered WNC's finest), The Poe House craft beer and wine pub, Jongo Java coffee house, and the Flat Rock Playhouse's Main Street venue. Gaylord uncovered the building's graceful bones and added modern touches to create a harmonious blending of respect for the old and appreciation for modern aesthetics. A number of Gaylord's project drawings and paintings are used to add visual interest to the apartment. We hope to see you soon! Recent Article "Thirty years ago, Asheville was one of the last American cities still trying to shake off the Great Depression. The economy was sluggish; downtown dozed. Nightlife was nowhere. But decades of stagnation actually preserved a base for the city’s rebirth – its art deco architecture downtown. Dormancy made the buildings immune to the banal overhauls of urban America at midcentury. And in the 1980s, public-private partnerships began to revive Asheville’s core, restoring distinctive structures instead of tearing them down, and stressing arts, culture and civic life. Outdoor dining, street vendors and sidewalk performers appeared. A boom in craft brewing and farm-to-fork dining followed. Now Asheville is a little piece of Paris tucked into the Blue Ridge, a walkable, inclusive haven for inventive minds, musicians, entrepreneurs, brewers and bon vivants. In fact, its civic concerns now are symptoms of success – the challenges of preserving its sustainability, affordability and cool cachet. Just this year, Asheville is among Condé Nast’s six best beer cities in America, Frommer’s best places to go and Huffington Post’s 13 best food destinations. Matador Network, a social nexus for travelers, calls it the “coolest town in the U.S.” You know about The Biltmore and hiking in the mountains, and even some smaller attractions, such as 12 Bones Smokehouse, a favorite of President Obama. In the second part of the Day-Trip Edition of our Best-Kept Secrets series, we find some of the city’s less obvious gems." Guest AccessAmple parking available.
