The SpaceHertford Haven is a really special place. We bought it 15 years ago after seaching high and low for a great place on the water. Since then, we enlarged and renovated the second floor and furnished the house with unusual furniture and art we've found in the area. It's a very special place for us and for the many guests we've entertained there. Our grandkids even like it better than the beach. Guest AccessYou will have access to the entire house. You may use towels, linen, food and supplies that you find in the cupboards; please replenish anything you use up. Interaction with GuestsWe live in Baltimore, so we are not able to greet you. However, our friends Kent and Brenda will greet you and be available if you need anything or have any questions. They both grew up in Hertford and know all about the area. You can also call us. The NeighborhoodHertford is a town on a peninsula. Our historic neighborhood is surrounded by water on three sides. Although close to nature, we are in town. Although you can feel as if you are a million miles from everything when you're in the backyard, it's just a short walk to restaurants and stores. And, we only about an hour and a half from the beaches on the Outer Banks. To us, it's the best of all worlds. Getting AroundFeet, kayaks and cars are the only means of transport available. Other Things to NoteThe kayaks and the rowboat are available for your use. You must use life preservers when you are on the river. The Perquimans River is clean, warm and wonderful to swim in. The dark color is due to tannins from the Great Dismal Swamp - it is not at all harmful. However, I recommend using lake shoes as the bottom feels a bit icky. Please lower and use the ladder to access the river. The ramp on the side of the river deck/dock is for dogs and the river is too shallow (about 4 feet) for deep diving from the dock.
