The SpaceOur home was one of the highest occupancy vacation rentals in our area while we lived overseas. Now we get to live in it for a few years and share it with you!!! This is a large, three story, 3,600 sq. foot home with a rolling yard full of grass and apple trees that leads into the New River across the street. Our property line extends into the river as well as four acres of wooded mountainside behind the house. We are just steps away from the new Pine Run River Access point, part of the New River Paddle Trail! Which makes our location even more desirable. We have two large decks and recommend a morning cup of coffee on the main floor deck while rocking in one of our red rocking chairs or the porch swing. Perhaps an evening of s'mores at our fire pit or a midnight- moonlit canoe ride. In the winter, you have a private mini-heater in your room. We have wine glasses, wine opener, a tray to take your breakfast or snacks in bed. Sit in front of one of two fireplaces to relax, read, sip a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Please note that your room is quiet and private, but it is located inside our home so there is not a private outside entrance to your room. Guest AccessGuests may have access the entire house except our bedrooms. We have ample parking to fit a horse trailer if needed. There are horses in the neighborhood who occasionally ride up and down our street, so you may want to bring your horse and take a ride. We have two large flat screened TVs hooked up to Dish Network. One TV is connected to a Wii and one to Apple TV. You are welcome to use these--and the Wii. Additionally, there is a small HD TV in the guest room. Wifi access throughout the house and on the decks. Two canoes, two kayaks and one small bike are at your disposal (as long as it doesn't have a flat tire). As much as possible, we can work with you to arrange to take the canoes or kayaks to a put in point up river and you can float down at your leisure and get out in our front yard. :-) This free service to you, is worth a lot compared to what the river companies charge to do the same. If you have your own way of strapping on the canoes or kayaks we can point you to various places to put in depending upon the length of the ride you want. We also have a a fishing rod we can throw in the canoes if you wish--or just fish while standing in the river in front of our home. The river is shallow enough for kids to safely play (supervised of course) and explore little critters in the river and mud. :-). And there's an old fashioned tire swing in the front yard attached to an apple tree. Interaction with GuestsWe are a busy family and come and go so you will have time alone in the home as well. We want you to feel "at home" in our home. We LOVE having guests and hope you will feel a part of our family, to the extent that you choose to interact with us. If it's a retreat you want, we'll give you all the space you need, if you want to join us to watch a game on ESPN, a movie, an evening meal, you are most welcome... just let us know. You can pick up a remote and watch a football game at one of several tv's, take a drink out on the deck and unwind, build a fire in the fire pit and relax--as you wish. We can make suggestions of places to visit, things to do, our favorite restaurants, etc. during your stay. We will supply a simple continental breakfast for you to enjoy if you wish. If you really love animals, our dogs would love to be taken on a walk or run or just play catch in the front yard. If you're not into dogs, we'll make sure that Eddie--the rambunctious black lab is on his yard leash. The Golden Retriever just lays around and is mellow. The NeighborhoodEnjoy a quiet neighborhood with homes spaced well apart and somewhat hidden in the mountainside. The road is a GREAT ONE to take walks or bike rides. We're not too far from the historic little town of Todd (about 12 minutes) if you want to drive out there and explore a bit and have a homemade cinnamon roll at the famous Todd Mercantile Store. One entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway is also a few minutes from us. Getting AroundWe are just 1.5 miles off Highway 421, down a small road. Snow plows plow the road in the winter and we have our own personal snow plow for our driveway. Other Things to NoteWe are located 10-12 minutes from the Appalachian State Campus and just a few minutes from an entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Get Married at the Riverhouse! What a beautiful place to tie the knot and have a cozy family and friend reception. The main deck makes for a great dance floor :-) As an FYI... My husband, John, is also a Clemson Grad--undergrad and NC State-- graduate school. Don't know if that's good or bad from your perspective. I'm from the San Francisco area and thought USC meant University of Southern California--until we got married and I discovered there's a USC on the East Coast! News Flash to me. I studied international politics and economics for graduate school at Johns Hopkins and lived in Washington D.C. for a while. We've lived 20 plus years in Asia and I've been to 65 countries, so between my husband and I and our three kids--we're a little confused about where "home" is. Welcome to our confusion--we look forward to meeting you and totally understand cultural distinctions. We all speak Mandarin--though may be forgetting it too quickly. I, used to be fluent in French and Italian and would love to brush up on the language.

The Old Farmhouse at Willet Ponds Farm in Todd offers...More than a place to stay: an Appalachian farm experience. It's all about the farm, and the peaceful, enriching experience your family will have here. Interact with our farm animal favorites: Lucy the pot-bellied pig, Solomon the long-eared donkey, several horses and our very friendly dogs. A week in the country is worth a month in town. Treat yourself to the simple joys of life and discover why we have an extremely high guest return rate. Join us in feeding our flock of 30 chickens, gathering eggs, and waking to the rooster's crow--it's therapeutic! “This was the best week of my life,” said one 4-year-old guest, speaking for most of the children who have experienced our farm and fallen in love with the “Little House on the Prarie” style Old Farmhouse. Indeed, what we hear time and time again is that Willet Ponds Farm is the perfect vacation spot for any animal lover or country romantic who needs a break from the suburbs. This quaint, century-old farmhouse offers an excellent venue for experiencing the Appalachian countryside: fresh mountain air, babbling brooks, nature at your doorstep. Tucked away on a dead-end road with extensive hiking trails right on the property, the Old Farmhouse takes one back to a slower day, a simpler time. Generous decking wraps around three sides, ending in a covered porch from which unfolds the brilliant green valley and a pastoral scene that will keep you dreaming wistfully from the porch swing. The house has been well lived in and well loved for generations. It's authentic—not a log cabin kit popped up on a hillside. There is spirit and character here. The Old Farmhouse is picture perfect in every way your imagination tells you a quaint Appalachian farmhouse should be. Antique furniture, rustic wormy chestnut cabinetry, knotty pine and hardwood floors, handmade quilts, and vintage photographs will convince you of its Appalachian heritage. A spacious, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable family room, and attractive sunroom with double French doors give you plenty of space to relax inside. The farmhouse has two charming bedrooms on the ground level, each with a double bed, plus two upstairs “attic” bedrooms (two single beds each) that will enchant your children—they absolutely love it here. Willet Ponds, our 100-acre farm, is 5 minutes from historic Todd (the famous General Store and Mercantile bakery), and the scenic New River (tubing, canoeing/kayaking/rafting, fishing, & swimming, not to mention easy bike riding along the river), 15 minutes to Elk Knob State Park, and only 20 minutes to either Boone or West Jefferson. From Boone you'll have easy access to the ski slopes, Tweetsie, shopping in Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Grandfather Mountain. But be sure to schedule in some down time to just enjoy the profound serenity of the property, to watch the horses graze. The adventurous can work up an appetite hiking the 3-mile loop trail over our private mountainside, taking in awesome views of a 100-ft. waterfall cascade and of the valley below, then enjoy the thrill of fishing in the trout pond to put dinner on the table (fishing poles provided). You can explore two mountain streams on the property that are just the right size to play in, then roast marshmallows at the convenient bonfire pit. As dusk falls, the spring peepers begin to sing a chorus while countless fireflies rise from the pasture, performing a natural light show rivaled only by the brilliant night sky that's so full of stars, it can only be imagined from the city.Cozy in Winter: While the house does not have a usable fireplace, the Toyostove heater features the glow of a fire and keeps the house cozy on the coldest nights. In addition to our horses, friendly dogs, chickens, peacocks, pot-bellied pig, rabbits, donkey (and whatever else the cat drug home), we also live on this, our dream farm, in a house across the way (not too close). We personally manage our 2 rental houses on the farm, making them clean and comfortable, in hopes that you'll feel that you're staying in a home, not a generic rental cabin. Our other house sleeps 6, so a party of up to 14 could be accommodated by renting both houses. We make sure to take care that you have everything you need, be it a cup of flour or freshly lain free-range eggs.If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We've made room for you here, too.Favorite Things to DoOn the Property: 1) Roast marshmallows at the fire ring.2) Walk the hiking trail up to the seldom-seen falls.3) Feed the chickens and gather eggs.4) Search for treasures hidden around the farm.5) Fish in the trout pond.6) Help with barn chores.Horse Rides: many guests ask about riding our horses. While we're not a riding stable open to the public, we do offer guided trail rides and/or riding lessons to our guests. We charge $50 per horse per ride (kids can share one horse). Because we need to arrange our schedules for horse activity, please let us know your interests in advance, whenever possible.

Willet Ponds Farm in Todd, NC offers...More than a place to stay: an Appalachian farm experience. The Willet Nest is one of two great houses we rent on the farm. Check out the Old Farmhouse (also on TripAdvisor), to see which suits you best or consider renting both (at a discount) to sleep up to a party of 16. The Willet Nest is all about the view, and the secluded mountain setting that is exactly what the doctor ordered to push your reset button. You’ll recognize immediately that this place is special, and that you’ll not want to leave—ever! The luxurious house will be your haven, and its large picture window will frame a view that hypnotizes you into forgetting there is a world beyond what you see. Just another mountain cabin with a view, you think? No. For starters, this one is surrounded by 1000+ undeveloped acres (including Elk Knob State Park) so you really are secluded in the wild. But as a bonus you get the farm down below, where you can interact with our farm animal favorites: Lucy the pot-bellied pig, Solomon the long-eared donkey, a herd of horses, an abundance of poultry, and our very friendly shepherd dogs. Watch our delightful farmhouse video to see the whole menagerie in action and to better understand what a visit could mean to you and yours (scroll down to 'Links to More Information'). To reach the Willet Nest you’ll drive right through the heart of the farm (slow down for the chickens!), then travel a half-mile driveway up the mountain through an enchanting forest. From the house you can walk out the front door and onto the 3-mile loop trail over our private mountainside, taking in awesome views of a 100-ft. waterfall cascade and of the valley below. After your hike, enjoy smores around the fire pit (firewood provided). When you’re ready to come back down to the farm, plan on swimming or boating in our mini-lake, and fishing for trout to put dinner on the table (fishing poles provided, stocked trout sold by the pound). You can join us at feeding time to care for our poultry and gather fresh eggs, if you want. Some guests even opt to join in some of the farm chores for fun, be it raking up horse apples in the barn, or helping to harvest our red and golden delicious in the apple orchard. The Willet Nest house comes along with a cute mother-in-law guest cottage, making it ideal for 2 couples or parents with older children who would think it neat to have a little house of their own. The cottage sleeps four, having a bathroom that separates 2 semi-private bedrooms, one with a deluxe Serta adjustable queen bed, the other with twin bunk beds for the younger kids. The house also sleeps four, featuring one large bedroom with a deluxe Nature's Rest queen bed and adjacent master bathroom, plus a futon for additional bed space in the living room . The living room and its view are large enough for all eight of you to share, plus there’s a tv (dish network) and dvd player for movie night. The light airy kitchen has all the modern appliances and utensils you could want without taking you away from the view or the party. The kitchen doubles as a dining room, so the food need not travel far. Unless you care to eat out on the sun deck that wraps around the cottage—or at the shaded grill-out picnic table on the ground floor. Need more sleeping space? Bring your RV! We’ve got a full hook up in the front yard, as well as a septic dumping station, so you can expand the sleeping quarters. If you’re travelling the Blue Ridge Parkway by RV, park it here while you regain your land legs. Willet Ponds Farm is 5 minutes from historic Todd (the famous general store and mercantile bakery), and the scenic New River (tubing, canoeing/kayaking/rafting, fishing, & swimming, not to mention easy bike riding along the river), 15 minutes to Elk Knob State Park, and only 20 minutes to either Boone or West Jefferson. From Boone you’ll have easy access to the ski slopes, Tweetsie, shopping in Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Grandfather Mountain. The Story Behind the Name We were always a musical family, some with formal training, and others off us with back-porch training.  Therefore, we knew our cabin had to have a musical name, and we wanted something that referenced the New river within walking distance of the cabin (and visible from the front deck in winter). The New River is unique because it's the only major river in North America that flows north. In fact, the New River flows north to the Ohio river, which in turn feeds into the Great Mississippi. Also, the New river is also one of the oldest rivers in the world from a geological standpoint. Therefore, we knew we wanted something timeless, with a connection to the river. We struggled with the name for a while. However, it was not until a late evening family reunion brainstorming session that we finally voted on the name- "A Moon River View".  The song, "Moon River" is from the movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and references expanded horizons.  The haunting melody and lyrics of the song celebrate the timelessness of the river, just as we felt time seemed to stop when we were at the cabin. Consequently, to commemorate the name, there will always be musical instruments in the cabin, some sheet music to "Moon River" and several stopped antique clocks (because we never bother to put batteries in them). We hope time stops for our guests as well. - Dave & Dottie, homeowners While this beautiful cabin is not overlooking the Mississippi River, it does face westward to the New River, a tributary of the good old Moon River! A Moon River View is both an exciting destination, and a relaxing getaway. As you drive up to the large parking area, you'll know this is a very special place. With upper and lower decks on both the front and back of the lodge, there is always the perfect place to enjoy nature. Sunsets to remember- The 2 decks on the front of the house have gorgeous layered, long range views of the mountains to the west. You'll want to make it a daily ritual to watch the sun set between the peaks. There is plenty of space for busy families. The lodge has three levels, and you'll enter on the middle level. There, you'll find the library/music studio as well as the comfortable TV room. Also on this level are a full bathroom and two bedrooms, each with a queen size bed. This level also has a another surprise. On the secluded rear covered deck, a new Jacuzzi hot tub is ready to relax you.
