There is a queen bed and a twin daybed. wireless internet, local coffee in room, views of the Columbia and ships on the river, quiet neighborhood with a access to town through the RiverWalk (or driving). I live in the front of the house and you visit in the back; we each have separate quarters. I will greet you when you arrive, and then am available if you need or want anything. If you are new to town, I am happy to make recommendations for things to do and places to eat. Alderbrook is a charming neighborhood, located on the east end of Astoria at the end of the Riverwalk. It is a historic fishing community on the Columbia River. One of the things that makes this place so special is the kind and generous neighbors, so please be respectful of them. And it is lovely, travelling on old railroad trestles out over the river. There is also a bus stop 2 blocks away that runs M-F. The SpaceThis apartment located in an historic ca. 1900 building, originally built for the fishermen who plied the Columbia River for salmon, is located almost in the heart of Astoria, the first US settlement West of the Rockies. The apartment is suitable for 1 or 2 adults. Don't expect modern, it is an old building, with comfortable furnishings, not fussy, not matchy-matchy. Expect "patina of age" which some call charm or character. Guest AccessGuests are within 1 block of the Trolley that can take them the length of the Water Front, having access to several fine dining establishments, 4 micro breweries, 1 real winery, a restored downtown Theater (originally vaudeville), a short drive to Fort Clatsop, the winter encampment of Lewis & Clark . Step out of the door to history, magnificent scenery, shops and the smell of clean sea air! Interaction with GuestsI enjoy sharing our history and places of interest with our guests, however appreciate their time and privacy. We are a short 5 minutes away and available for help and questions at any time, in person, via email or phone. We want our guests to feel safe and be comfortable, we have installed keyless entry with your own personal code. The NeighborhoodTake a Rain Vacation in Astoria! The neighborhood is ideal for anyone wanting a River experience, watch the huge ships pass by quietly, or small sailboats drifting or fishing boats on their way out to sea. Hear the seagulls and maybe sea lions as they make their way along the river. Walk or bike the RiverWalk or catch the trolley into town, only a few short blocks. On Sundays you will enjoy walking to the Sunday Market (May - Oct) for your locally grown produce, fresh flowers or local souvenirs and artful gifts. Lots of interesting shops, art galleries and antiques, within easy walking distance of the apartment. This apartment is across Marine Drive/Hwy 30, one block from the RiverWalk and Trolley that runs the length of the waterfront. The Hwy coming into town from the West and the East parallels the Columbia River which follows the Lewis & Clark journey. The Art Loft is across the street with an Art Store on the street level. Great restaurants and coffee shops both East and West of the apartment, some menus provided in Guidebook. Getting AroundThe local Trolley best bet is $2 ticket for all day on and off pass along the River Front. Our local bus transit station is 6 blocks away and can take riders down the coast or out to the Lewis & Clark Nat'l Park. Other Things to NoteYou'll find Astoria has a rich history, wonderful period architecture, and great places to dine, I will have current menus available for dining ideas. The space gives you privacy and comfort while being in a lavishly decorated national historic landmark room. Guest AccessGuests can hang out in the parlor, dinning room, and kitchen. The bathrooms are shared with the other house guests. The house does have two other guest rooms that can be rented out on occasion. The Space"Privacy and Proximity" are the key words for this apartment. The whole apartment is yours to relax or enjoy the close proximity to the downtown and the Columbia River nearby---- making this space a wonderful getaway! You will have your own entrance, and only steps away from the Columbia River. Enjoy walking or biking the length of the riverfront, or stay inside and watch the storms, take a Rain Vacation in the cozy living space. Imagine the fisherman stepping off their boats more than a century ago. Guest AccessAt the time of check in we will give your your own key code. The entire apartment is yours to enjoy in peace and privacy, conveniently located near the historic downtown and the Columbia River. Bike, walk or catch the trolley when it is running seasonally. Interaction with GuestsThis apartment is designed as a retreat from the ordinary, we want to meet our guests as they arrive, and happy to have as much or as little interaction as desired. We are only 5 minutes away and are usually available by phone or email whenever needed. I provide coffee/tea/juices and fresh fruit for a "starter breakfast." You can make your own, or make reservations -- lots of very good nearby restaurants and coffee shops. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is ideal for anyone wanting a River experience, watch the huge ships pass by quietly, or small sailboats drifting or fishing boats on their way out to sea. Hear the seagulls and maybe sea lions as they make their way along the river. Walk or bike along the RiverWalk or catch the trolley into town, only a few short blocks. On Sundays you will enjoy walking to the Sunday Market (May - Oct) for your locally grown produce, fresh flowers or local souvenirs and artful gifts. Lots of interesting shops, art galleries and antiques, easily within walking distance of the apartment. This apartment is across Marine Drive/Hwy 30, one block from the RiverWalk and the Trolley that runs the length of the waterfront. The Hwy coming into town from the West and the East parallels the Columbia River which follows the Lewis & Clark journey. The Art Loft is right across the street with an Art Store on the street level. Great restaurants and coffee shops both East and West of the apartment, some menus provided in Guidebook. Getting AroundThe Trolley ticket is $1, or $2 for a day pass when it is running, usually from May through good weather (it is all volunteers). The transit Center is 7 blocks away with both local bus service, and bus service to Portland and beyond. The local "Bikes and Beyond" has bike rentals. See the Guidebook. Other Things to NoteThis is an historic 4-plex, built about 1900, and we suspect it was a boarding house for fishermen as they came off the river. Although we do hope to have most of what you will need, it is old, not modern, described as on the somewhat rustic side. Our guests will enjoy the fact that the long term tenants are mature quiet adults who are respectful of others. You'll find Astoria has a rich history, wonderful period architecture, and great places to dine, I have current menus available for dining ideas. Although we don't provide a traditional breakfast, we do give you a "starter breakfast" with locally roasted coffee from the Astoria Coffee Company featuring the famous "Goonie Blend" coffee, tea, fruit, juices and usually some kind of baked goods, English muffins, or bagels.

The SpaceThe space is an elegant old mansion that has been restored over the past 30 years. It is a prime example of Italianate architecture. Construction on the building happened around 1880. The room has radiant heat during the cold season, large windows, and tall ceilings. It is minimally decorated in order to show off the grace and form of the room. The bay windows face east giving you the opportunity to enjoy spectacular sunrises. The room shares a bathroom with other guests. Towels and soap are provided. Please bring any special hair products if needed. Guest AccessGuests have access to the lower main level, kitchen, and garden. The basement, attic and family bedrooms upstairs are private. Interaction with GuestsMornings and evenings are common times for interaction. During the day we're usually around working in the property. The NeighborhoodThis location, the "Vortex," is where 12th and Grand meet. The name comes from the fact that Astoria has two 12th and Grand locations. This happened because certain developers in the early days of Astoria's growth couldn't get along. This spot is quiet and comfortable. There's a view from the front lawn and there isn't much traffic. I love it! Getting AroundThere is no public transportation from this point. Everything is walkable. You might like to bring a bike to ride the river walk path or take the historical trolly. You can get loads of information about Astoria on the trolly and it's one of the cheapest entertainment opportunities in town. Other Things to NoteThis is one of Astoria's only downtown mansions. Staying here is an unique experience. If you love historic architecture, this is where you want to stay. Please be aware that you're staying with a family. Sometimes Minntah, the kid of the house, practices her music and plays with her little dog Rascal. She loves to sing and sometime she performs with a group named 3 Leg Torso. Check them out online. No smoking please Please leave shoes at the front door

Both bedrooms have queen size beds with excellent new mattresses/new bedding, each with its own bathroom ( + two small single bed options if needed. The couch folds into a single bed + one other single bed can be set up. Both singles are comfortable/great mattresses/new bedding). Lots of space and room for privacy as well as openness, light, and views that are awesome. Designed to feel warm and inviting with a minimal amount of "stuff" to keep the focus on nature and imagination. Great writers and artists retreat. Families will have fun here too. Toy box! This is my home, and I love to share the beauty. Heads up--you have to climb steps up to this space-- 35 steps total--which is why the view is spectacular. Street parking. Guest AccessYou will have access to a key and directions for the house inside. The host will have the place ready for you. Interaction with GuestsMy host will be available during your stay if you have any questions or issues, and I am available by phone or email as well. I will leave information about the house and also about the area. Because I travel for work, I may or may not be here to greet you. But know that you are welcome. The NeighborhoodAstoria is charming, hilly, victorian, eccentric, and Bohemian. Walking the neighborhoods is great fun. The place is infused with freshness, history, moody skies. Galleries and restaurants line the downtown streets, and the River Walk goes up and down the river for 8 miles (trolley or bike or walk). In 15 minutes you are at a magnificent beach or poking along a back road of lushness and funky spots and places to launch a kayak. Three rivers empty into the Columbia. Great Maritime Museum, history museums, and the Albatross has excellent drinks, classy food, and is open till midnight. Also excellent coffee shops, and the Columbia Cafe is my favorite breakfast spot. Getting AroundThere is a bus that goes past my house. And bus systems that go up and down the coast. Amtrak runs a bus to and from Portland twice daily. There is an Enterprise car rental place. Other Things to NoteNatural beauty abounds. I will have maps of the area--beaches, hikes, etc. + restaurant lists. The food here is exceptional. Great food co-op down the street. Fresh fish off the boats (will include map to fish market). Easy, beautiful kitchen. Everything in the loft-living room is on wheels or moveable for your creative imagination. House is recently renovated, designed as a flex-space for people to enjoy. New furnace, roof, windows, so the place is super cozy, minimal, and well-designed.

The NeighborhoodAstoria has grown from humble beginnings, founded by John Jacob Astor, America's first millionaire, in 1810, although he never even visited the town that bears his name. It is the western end of the Lewis and Clark Trail and was first visited by the storied pair in 1805. The first U.S. Post Office west of the Rocky Mountains was established in Astoria in 1847. Astoria is known for tremendous Salmon runs and was the prime location for the fish canning industry in the early 1800's. Our quiet little corner of Astoria is right over the water, literally sitting on wooden pilings over the Columbia River and just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean and the storied "Graveyard of the Pacific". Be sure to visit the Columbia Maritime Museum while in town, voted "Astoria's Best Cultural Attraction". On the Pier, visit Coffee Girl for your morning latte, the Rogue Brewery for lunch or dinner, rent a kayak or stand up paddleboard from Astoria Scuba and Kayak, stop by Pranda Massage to soothe those muscles and then park your tired self on a park bench on the back side of the Pier for one of our amazing sunsets. Tomorrow will be even better! Getting AroundAstoria has a wonderful trolley that runs along the waterfront, with Pier 39 at the east end of the line, be sure to take a ride, its only a buck.

"Greetings from the Owners!" Thank you for considering our "Painted Lady" for your next get-a-way.  We are working very hard to make the house a wonderful place to stay.  There are some things we would like to bring to your attention. Our home is suited to those who want quiet and peaceful surroundings.  The house is a beautiful place to relax after experiencing what Astoria and the surrounding areas have to offer.   The City of Astoria requires that any vacation rental must have a full-time resident on site.  The first floor of the house is a long-term rental.  This satisfies the requirement by the city.  Because this is a "shared" house we ask that you please observe the 10pm-8am quiet hours.  Please be respectful of the tenants below you and the neighbors as well. If you do decide to "book" a stay we hope you have a wonderful time at our house!  Since we are constantly making improvements to the house, any suggestions to make it a better place to stay would be welcome. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have the ultimate Oregon experience by staying at this delightful Astoria vacation rental unit in ‘The Astoria Painted Lady.’ Ideally situated atop a picturesque hill, overlooking the tranquil waters of the Columbia River, this lovely abode will serve as an idyllic home base for exploring the oldest settlement west of the Rocky Mountains! The interior is equally as charming, with massive picture windows allowing sunshine to stream in, casting an abundance of inviting natural light on the abode’s tastefully unique decor and comfortable furnishings. Everything you’ll need to be as relaxed as possible during your stay is here, including wireless internet access, central heating, a TV with DVD player and a wonderful selection of movies for you to choose from, sure to appease your entertainment needs. The dwelling’s cozy library will quickly become your favorite place to unwind after eventful vacation days. When you’re not out enjoying the local cuisine, utilize the home’s gorgeous fully equipped kitchen, complete with all necessary cooking appliances. After cooking in the kitchen, gather around the adjacent wood dining table, with seating for 6 people, to savor your culinary masterpiece while gazing out at the dazzling Columbia River, where you’ll observe ships anchoring as they travel between Portland and the Pacific Ocean. Later, head out to the large side yard to play some yard games with the verdant forested hillside serving as a peaceful backdrop. When you’re finally ready to call it a night, retreat to either of the 2 beautifully ornate bedrooms, each of which have their own bathroom, to rest up for the next exciting vacation day! You simply can’t beat this home’s phenomenal location, situated within a quiet neighborhood that’s laden with unmatched natural beauty. From here, you’ll be just a short distance from Astoria’s lovely riverwalk - a local favorite! This paved walkway along the Columbia River passes under the Astoria-Megler Bridge, past the sailors’ memorial and into downtown, giving you an all-encompassing look at the area. Once downtown, you can slip down small side streets leading you to wonderful restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries and shops - both antique and specialty. While meandering down the town’s riverwalk, you’ll also pass by the Columbia River Maritime Museum, several Coast Guard ships and the East Mooring Basin, where sea lions are constant sources of free entertainment! If you’re looking for some fun in the sun, hop in your car and drive 20 minutes to the spectacular Pacific Ocean beaches - dipping your toes in the ocean and flying a kite are musts! About 30 minutes away, you’ll find the town of Seaside, where you can walk on the quaint boardwalk and visit the delightful aquarium. History buffs will love learning about the area’s fascinating past at Fort Clatsop State Park, where Lewis and Clark stayed from December of 1805 to March of 1806. Fort Stevens, located on the shores of the Pacific, also abounds with interesting history. Here, you can explore a bunker for a first-hand look at what soldiers experienced in the past. If you cross the 4 mile Astoria-Megler bridge into Washington, you’ll find plenty of additional parks and forts near the Columbia River. Traveling east on the Washington side of the river will lead you to Cathlamet, where you can ride a ferry across the river and wind your way back to Astoria on the scenic Highway 30. The SpaceThe shower is one floor below the bedroom, so we provide robes and sandals. In the morning we provide English muffins, fruit, coffee, and a selection of teas. It's not just a bare room. There's a desk, writing paper, and art on the walls. In short, an excellent place to get away from it all. Guest AccessYou'll have access to your bedroom, both bathrooms, kitchen, sauna, front porch sunroom, garden, dining room, and common room. Our home isn't handicapped accessible--there are stairs. Interaction with GuestsWe live in the house, so we are available most of the time to answer questions. Dwight is a magazine writer who has written almost 300 articles about the area, and Rhonda has lived here almost 30 years, so we can answer just about anything you can throw at us. The NeighborhoodOur historic neighborhood was originally occupied by the union members who owned the Union Cannery. It is not downtown, but a little over a mile downriver. The house overlooks the commercial area of the port of Astoria, Young's Bay, and the mouth of the Columbia. We get some amazing sunsets and interplay of light and clouds. Getting AroundThe nearest public transportation is the trolley. It's over 100 years old and doesn't run on rainy days. Otherwise plan to take a longish walk or a short drive, and parking usually isn't too much of a problem.

The SpaceThis sweet spot has wood floors, a great view, a remote-controlled fireplace, and tons of games. It's great to hang out and relax in, and with a large dining room that can seat up to 10, you can invite your friends too. We've never been saddened by a rainy day here because it's just great taking it easy. If you've got records or tapes, bring them! We don't have a TV or DVD player available, but the wireless internet is great for downloading flicks on your computer should you chose to bring yours along. Guest AccessYou'll have a full kitchen with a coffee maker. Basic cooking essentials are available. Interaction with GuestsWe'll be hands-off, but right above you in a separate flat. The NeighborhoodUppertown is historically a working class neighborhood. Our place is on a dead end, so traffic is pretty quiet up above us. However, we are just above Marine Drive, which is highly trafficked, and the sound of sea lions from Pier 39 carries up the hill; if noises like this are an issue, we suggest bringing ear plugs. We will have some menus & brochures on hand from local destinations. One place that's best to be prepared for is the Aquatic Center, a 10 minute walk away. Bring your suits if you're in to swimming! It's great for kids, with a water slide and a toddler zone. The entrance is located on the west of the house (it's the large faded yellow one at the bottom of the driveway), to your left as you approach. There's also a back porch that we share to the right (off your kitchen). Getting AroundThere are footpaths that make reaching town quite straight forward. I would not recommend following (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps, as they suggest you drive on these only-pedestrian trails. Make your turns off of Marine Drive at 33rd (the Safeway light) to get up to Grand Ave to avoid frustration. Other Things to NoteThe house is part of a compound-style arrangement of houses, all built by a family that owned an operated the now-defunct general store. We are hoping to renovate the historic commercial storefront and it's neighboring carriage house that is now in a state of disrepair. The carriage house used to provide garage space for neighbors, and the store was in business for 40 years. When the original owner died in the 70's, it was permanently closed.
