Charming 1820 stone house, The Cairn, just off Rte 103 in a small village enclave reached by crossing the historic Bartonsville covered bridge- rebuilt after hurricane Irene.
The house is surrounded by a lovely garden that reaches down to the Williams River in the back. The main floor has an open kitchen, dining and living room perfect for sharing memorable moments together. The kitchen is a treasure trove of old Vermont details, a beautiful old soapstone sink, and large center island made from local barn board-rustic, old farm tools converted to hold kitchen utensils, all the basic amenities but fun and convenient. A comfortable downstairs den offers a place for some quiet time; wonderful for causal contemplations, reading, watching TV (cable) or playing some games. There is also a pull out sofa (?)
Upstairs are 3 bedrooms, each decorated with cozy, old-cottage charm and with double beds in each room and ample closet space throughout.
There is a large, full bathroom downstairs and a half bath upstairs and a new stackable washer and dryer. Wireless WIFI throughout the house.
The thick, exposed stone walls in the living/kitchen area not only add charm and make this a very special place to spend vacation time but also hold the heat in in the winter and help cool the house in the summer.
Skiing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating can all be found in the area. The Cairn is within 30 minutes driving distance to 4 major ski areas (Okemo, Magic Mtn, Bromley and Stratton. Cross-country ski trails in nearby Grafton, ice-skating in Chester or at Jackson Gore, Okemo.
Nearby Chester Vermont offers a trove of surprises: a variety of wonderful restaurants, a great fun Irish bar, a world-class bookstore, art galleries, international wine store, French bakery and English tea house. Discover the famous Vermont Country Store with their incredible merchandise offerings and products, the Antique Center in Chester or visit the Stone Village in Chester Depot.
For those who love active sports in summer there are a myriad of places to discover. For golf there is the Rockingham Golf Course or Tater Hill (check to be sure about this), tennis can be played at the public courts in Chester or various private clubs in the area. Hike the Appalachian Trail or swim the Williams river at the edge of the Cairnâ€™s property line.
