The SpaceCool, artsy and aesthetically funky four-season lakehouse built using reclaimed flooring, concrete counters, zero VOC paint, passive solar and superior insulation. Designed by award-winning Vermont architects with a cool, artsy Dwell Magazine aesthetic. 2 BR, each with a comfy (firm) queen bed. Linens are included. House comes with internet, cable TV, kayak, canoe and board games as well as a dock and screened porch. Birdwatching / bass fishing paradise. Outstanding hiking, biking, kayaking, also golfing at Prospect Point, about a mile away, and swimming at nearby Crystal Beach. Incredible location. Turtles nest in the front; blue herons in the back. Close to Green Mountain Collage, Castleton State and Middlebury College. Available for two night minimum. Happy to negotiate deals for longer stays, especially for monthly rentals off season. We welcome families, but a steep ladder leading to an unfinished loft makes this house inappropriate for children between the ages of 4-10. It's better for two adult couples, or fewer. Dogs are welcome. We just finished building this home a few years ago and are careful about renting it out to people who will treat it well. Please respond with detailed information about yourself and your plans for your visit to Vermont. Interaction with GuestsOur property manager is available to help you with any problems. Other Things to NoteWe recently had our well deepened. The water's been tested and is safe, but it's got a distinct mineral aroma. Plan to bring a few jugs of drinking water.

The SpaceKokoro offers a unique environment where nature, architecture and art complement each other. Exposed fir beams and large glass windows are juxtaposed with an ancient tea house door, carved guardian figures from Bali, a deep Japanese tub with hand-painted tiles. Surrounded by art and nature and the sound of our waterfall, one can relax into another way of being. It is a perfect antidote to life which is often lived at a hurried pace. Kokoro translates into English as "heart and mind as one" and our hope is that Kokoro offers a quiet respite for renewal or creative work. The grounds are extensive and guests are invited to explore walks through woods and meadows, the waterfall and spring-fed pond which offers great swimming in season. The beauty of nature is complemented by an abundance of art and stone sculpture both indoors and out, much of which is created by B and Woody, the hosts of Kokoro. Guests stay in a separate apartment which is completely private with its own entrance and deck and connects to the main house by a glassed in walkway. The rooms are comfortable in size with a living room, kitchen and bath on the first floor and two bedrooms up a stairway on the second floor. Each bedroom has one double bed. The apartment is comfortable and cozy, warm and well lit with a coffee maker, toaster oven, cook-top stove and many books and games to while away your time. There is a telephone for local calls and a TV with satellite service. Most guests are able to access our internet server. Cell phone access is very limited. We are pleased to greet guests and orient them to the house and property. We are available in case of need. Otherwise, our guests are able to enjoy Kokoro on their own schedule. Generally, we are in residence when guests are here. If we are away, we have a contact person who lives close by who can be called in case of emergency. Kokoro is located on a quiet country road with very little traffic. The house is situated off the road, with views of the pond and waterfall areas. Although it is completely private, it is only 30 minutes from the charming college town of Middlebury, 40 minutes from skiing at Killington, Pico or the Middlebury Snow Bowl. We are close to Lake Bomoseen with lakeside dining and a beach in season, 20 minutes from quaint Castleton with the classic Birdseye Diner and a great wine shop, 15 minutes from Cafe' Provence in Brandon and 20 minutes from the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center which offers art courses and hosts the Marble Street Sculpture Park. Our setting is rural, so guests need to have their own transportation. If guests are coming by plane or train, and are planning to remain at Kokoro and not travel on their own, arrangements can be made (for an additional fee) for us to pick you up and bring you back to the public transportation. We have an AMTRAK station in Castleton (20 min), and an airport in Rutland (30 min.) or Burlington, Vermont (75 min). It is a special privilege and pleasure to share Kokoro with guests. We derive a great deal of joy in seeing folks bask in the aura of calm and exquisite nature that nurtures our daily lives and creativity. The SpaceEnjoy an authentic rustic woodland camping experience with a few luxuries: comfy beds with linens, ceiling fans, Wifi, and a kitchen, in a spacious open "dry cabin". Although there is no running water, plenty of water for drinking and cooking is available in containers. The kitchen includes a full size refrigerator/freezer, a full size stove, a sink with a drain, as well as a Keurig coffee maker, toaster, microwave, dishes, pots and pans, and cooking utensils. A clean outdoor portable toilet with a sink and water for washing hands, and an outdoor shower area with solar shower bags are provided. As an alternative on a cloudy day, hot water heated on the stove can be added and used with a battery operated pump. If its chilly, a wood burning stove heats the open space very well. There is a charcoal grill, charcoal, a portable fire pit, and plenty of firewood provided. This cabin was built in 2008 as a hunting lodge and has been well maintained and used minimally. The cathedral ceilings and pine interior create an impressive open space. Mounted deer heads add to the atmosphere. Guest AccessThe entire building is being rented. It is private and located at the far end of our land. There are state park woodlands and hiking trails very close to the property. Interaction with GuestsOur home is on the opposite end of the property, but not visible from the camp. We will be available to help you with advice for enjoying your visit, and to deliver more water if needed. The NeighborhoodGlen Lake is uniquely special in that it is pristine and natural, surrounded by Bomoseen State Park lands, rather than private homes. Hiking trails are close by, taking you along the lake and beyond. There is a boat launch at the bottom of the hill, 1/2 mile, and many private areas for bathing at this very clean lake. You may hear the sounds of loons or owls. We will provide you with a list of local restaurants, shopping and places that we recommend. A stained glass studio is located in our home and we make Adirondack chairs here. Getting AroundThere is parking on the property. Amtrak in Castleton connects to New York City. A car is necessary to enjoy the area. Other Things to NoteAlthough this is a privately situated place, it is not far from civilization. It is on a dirt road, and in an area used for recreation, so it is not isolated. Bomoseen State Park camp area is 1/2 mile away, with a beach, paddle boats, snacks and hot showers. There is a day use fee and showers are coin operated. 4 quarters will buy a decent shower. The showers are located separate from the beach. For families with young children, we can set up a hinged baby gate at the top of the stairs, panels with a gate at the bottom of the stairs, and panels with a gate around the wood burning stove. Cell service is limited and works best with Verizon service. It should allow for texting. A short walk down the hill will access increased cell service. Throughout the summer there are free weekly outdoor concerts in several local towns. There are farmers markets where you can purchase healthy local food, produce, and crafts. A major grocery store is only 10 minutes away. In addition, there are many fine restaurants , boutiques, shops, galleries and museums within 45 minutes driving time. There are motor boat rentals on Lake Bomoseen, hiking trails, fishing. birding, and more. Killington and Okemo mountains, each 1 hour distance, has summer activities for the whole family.

Welcome to Johnson's On Bomoseen Historic Lake Country Home. This updated 3 bedroom 2.5 bath home is perfectly sited on +/- 20 acres of picturesque pastures, meadows, woods, trails, ideal for cross country skiing, snow shoeing and winter trekking. With 25’ of pvt. waterfront on Lake Bomoseen (the largest lake inside of VT), opportunities abound to enjoy outdoor recreation including ice sailing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ice skating, or dining at any of the restaurants on the lake. If you want to get away from it all, stroll through our old grotto to our private 715' of serene waterfront on Love’s Marsh Waterfowl Wilderness Reserve, or relax in our comfy & private renovated luxury country home, cuddled up to either of our two gas burning fireplaces. For family fun enjoy an evening around the grand stone firepit, a stroll along the waterfront, our DVD/games collection or a special meal prepared in the fully equipped kitchen. One of Vermont's historical gems and an important part of Lake Bomoseen's history since the mid 1800's, Johnson's On Bomoseen was originally an important and popular destination hotel on Lake Bomoseen, having first opened it's doors in the late 1870's when Colonel Endearing Johnson and his brother came home from the US Civil War and decided to convert the 900 acre farm into a destination hotel. This gem of a property is once again available to guests as a vacation rental property. Johnson's On Bomoseen was operated by the Johnson family continuously from the late 1860's until the 1950's. In 1933 the original Johnson's on Bomoseen Hotel burned down, and on it's original foundation the Johnson family built the current home (and built a new hotel elsewhere on the property which eventually burned down in the 1950's). While the original farm was over 900 acres, over the years the Johnson family sold all but the remaining +/- 22 acres, leaving the most desirable prime pastural and waterfront lands and a beautiful country home set back from the lake on the original hotel site and foundation. Today, Johnson's On Bomoseen enjoys 25' of waterfront on Lake Bomoseen and 715' of waterfront on Love's Marsh Waterfowl Reserve, walking trails perfect for hiking, snow shoeing and cross country skiing, and beautiful pastures and a secluded mature grotto. About the 2200 sq. ft 3+ bedroom home: Built in 1933 upon the foundation of the original Johnson's On Bomoseen Hotel, the current home is set back from the lake and features 3 spacious bedrooms including a beautifully appointed Master Suite, 2 1/2 fully updated baths, multiple living areas including a gas fireplace, and a fully equipped and updated kitchen. There are also two furnished screened in porches and a formal dining area with seating for 10. About Lake Bomoseen: In early days the Native Americans loved to camp near these waters. The name, Bomoseen, or 'Beautiful waters,' indicates the appreciation the natives had for one of the loveliest sheets of water on earth. Lake Bomoseen is a freshwater lake in the western part of the state of Vermont in the towns of Castleton and Hubbardton in Rutland County. It is the largest lake that lies entirely within Vermont's boundaries, with a surface area of approximately 9.6 square kilometres (2,400 acres). A portion of the lake's shoreline is contained within Bomoseen State Park. Most of the remaining area around the lake is privately owned. The lake has such recreational accommodations as a public beach, marinas, waterfront restaurants, and public boat launches, in addition to the state park. There are approximately 1,000 residences around the lake, as well as shopping, restaurants and other commercial facilities. Neshobe Island on Lake Bomoseen played weekend escape to members of New York's elite literary set, who met weekly at Manhattan's Algonquin Hotel, and their friends from the mid 1920s to early '40s. Ethel Barrymore, Irving Berlin, Vivian Leigh, Harpo Marx, Laurence Olivier, Dorothy Parker and other celebrities frequented literary critic Alexander Woolcott's 7-acre island retreat, which was sold in February 1998 for $675,000 to a New York family that intends to live there year-round. Activities on and around Lake Bomoseen include: -Boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, wind surfing, swimming, fishing, camping in the summer and hunting during season. - Ski boats, jet skiis, rowboats, party boats and kayaks are available for rental at Woodards Marine or Dudas Marina. -Ice Fishing, snow shoeing, ,cross country skiing, and snowmobiling in winter. -Crystal beach: volley ball, sandy beach swimming, playground, picnic tables, basketball. -Great Antiquing, bird watching, outlet shopping, horseback riding and scenic drives all year round -Bomoseen State Park: Camping, swimming, volleyball, hiking. -Hiking and biking on The Long Trail -Fishing: bass, panfish, lake trout, brown trout, yellow perch, smelt, and northern pike. -Prospect Bay Country Club- 9-hole Public Golf Course (2 mi) -Diamond Run Mall, the state's second largest shopping mall. -The home is a quick 45 mins to Outlet shopping at Lake George and the Great Escape Amusement Park, Manchester, VT also has excellent Outlet shopping -Vermont State Fairgrounds -Fine dining is available both on the Lake and close by. -Horseback riding is available (5 mi).
