The SpaceOakdales' Guest Cottage was originally a cook house used for summer cooking in the early 1900's. In 1988 our family remodeled the building and it has been a guest home ever since. The Cottage has a king size bed, twin bed, kitchenette, bathroom, sitting area, and kitchen table on the first floor, and a queen bed in the loft. In 1981 Dave and I moved to Floyd to join our friends who were artists already living here. Much of our home and the cottage is adorned with pottery and artwork from our friends. We do have WiFi and cable TV, but advise you that cell phone service is often spotty, with Verizon having the most coverage in the area. Our property is located one mile off the Blue Ridge Parkway and 11 miles from the town of Floyd. Hiking is out the front door and we have a secluded swimming pond in the woods with beach and dock. The town of Floyd is very fun with the Friday Night Jamboree and weekly events. Floyd boasts great restaurants, hiking, cycling on the parkway, local coffee roasters, bakery, organic farms, bee sanctuary, wineries, and health food store which offers something for everyone. This is a culturally rich county • full of artists and musicians. Also as far as bringing pets are concerned, please know that while we love dogs we are concerned that you do not allow them on any furniture or beds. In addition please do not plan on leaving them alone in the cottage unless you have discussed this with us in advance. Important: Words of advice. A GPS, map quest, phone maps, etc. do not always work for our roads. The phone app "waze" seems to know our roads the best. Use the itinerary to get to our cottage. Guest AccessPond, trails, 80 acres, dirt roads, ping pong, basketball, & hammock. Interaction with GuestsWe often are there to greet our guests. In the event that we are out for the evening we will pre-arrange this with our guests letting them know. The NeighborhoodCows, horses, fields, woods, dirt roads, the Blue Ridge Parkway, charming town of Floyd. Getting AroundNo. Other Things to NoteWe do have two dogs who are often here to great you as well. They are very friendly.

The SpaceUnique octagonal structure mirrors Thomas Jefferson's architectural design. Nature sanctuary overlooks river, woods, meadow and bird feeders. Impossibly cute squirrels and raccoons pay occasional visits to the bird feeder. Options include a whole-house rental (owners away) accommodating up to six people. We travel monthly, so ask about your desired dates! Or while we are home, one to four visitors can be here using one or two bedrooms. This home is a great retreat space for quiet contemplation and is suitable for small group retreats, workshops and more. Guest AccessMain level living, kitchen and dining areas. Also open access to nature trails, riverside swing, kayaks, hammock, wrap-around deck with dining table, sitting areas, rockers and gliders. Master bedroom suite and office are off limits unless you have a full-house rental. Interaction with GuestsIf you are a guest staying with us while we are here, we can offer as much or as little friendly interaction as you'd like and as our time allows. We'll interface at the beginning and end, and our friendly neighbor hosts can help you out with whatever you need. By arrangement with additional fees agreed upon in advance, stock up of groceries, catered meals and holistic wellness sessions (massage) may be arranged for your visit. The NeighborhoodWe have truly good-hearted and friendly neighbors within walking distance, but our place is a sanctuary of quiet and wildlife. The community helps each other out, and watches over the neighborhood. We have arrangements with our neighbors to help out our guests while we are away. Getting AroundThis is a beautiful unpaved rural retreat away from any public transportation. A winding gravel road gets you here. We recommend all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles in the winter or times of heavy rain, when snow, ice or mud may appear. We are about 15 minutes drive from charming Floyd, Virginia, with its shops, restaurants and festivities. Other Things to NoteWe are holistically oriented. Most of our food/beverages are organic, we use natural cleaning products, and we live a healthy lifestyle. Luke has lived in Floyd for over 30 years, so he can advise on how to get the most out of your stay! We often have neighborhood music jams or potlucks, and you might find yourself joining us if you are so inclined -- no pressure!

The SpaceThe room is the only bedroom on the first floor. Enjoy views out the 2-story cathedral windows in the living room, and prepare meals with ease in the spacious kitchen. Lots of natural light. The house is situated on almost 200 acres of land, some pasture, some wooded. We do some homesteading; we have a vegetable garden, chickens and 3 dairy goats, so free range organic eggs and raw milk usually available $4/dozen, $5/quart. Guest AccessIt's an easy 20 minute drive into the town of Floyd with all it's country charm (closest groceries there: Foodlion, Slaughters and Harvest Moon natural foods co-op). Guests are also welcome to explore the property. There is a walking trail down to the river and through the woods. The river is great for dip on a warm day! Visit the neighboring honey bee sanctuary. Interaction with GuestsWe are happy to be social as much as we are available, but we have our own space upstairs and always respect our guests' need for space and privacy. The NeighborhoodOur closest neighbors are about a half mile down the drive, so you can be sure to find peace and quiet. Getting AroundNo public transit is available. Other Things to NoteWe don't have WiFi and Floyd county has spotty cell phone coverage, if you don't have Verizon don't count on getting service. It's a great opportunity to unplug and relax in beautiful rural Virginia! Also as homesteaders our day starts early, but we are quiet making ourselves coffee and getting ready for the morning milking.

The SpaceBuilt in the late 30's, Max's House is a classic farmhouse with updates for comfort. New bath and updated kitchen add comforts travelers desire while the flavor of the original home is maintained. Lacy curtains, wooden floors and rockers abound. The home gives you a hug as soon as you enter the door. Guest AccessGuests have the entire house at their disposal. Acres of field and a babbling creek await wanderers just out the back door. In season, apple trees droop with bright red fruit next to the house. A walk to the end of the road (a dead end) leaves visitors in awe at the long range mountain views and ends at a peaceful pond. Enjoy! Interaction with GuestsI live walking distance from the farmhouse and am available to help make your stay exactly what you desire. In season, you may see me bringing fresh produce from my garden too. The NeighborhoodHaving lived in the area for 30 years, I cannot imagine living anywhere else. The gently rolling Blue Ridge Mountains nestle green valleys dotted with cows, sheep, horses and goats. Our close-knit community shares a strong pride in our special place. The tree lined winding gravel road ends at a pond with a small island and pier great for fishing and ice skating in winter. Very few cars travel our road since it is a dead end. This makes for lots of quiet, bird song, rustling leaves, lowing cows and crickets. Stars abound in the evening sky and mountain vistas open from every curve. Interaction with GuestsI stay with my son and his wife, who live on the same driveway, about half a mile from the river house. We are available anytime if you need anything. The NeighborhoodThe house is very secluded. There is one neighbor on the other side of the river and a bit upstream. Downstream there is at least a half mile of pristine river and floodplain with great spots for camping and cookouts. The river is fairly shallow and safe and excellent for tubing, canoeing and fishing. You can put in at the Route 8 bridge and drift down to the house, which takes about 3 hours, or take shorter trips using our road on the floodplain. Getting AroundWe are 25 miles from Blacksburg, 13 from Floyd and 9 miles from Riner, which is the nearest gas station/store. Please contact us for a detailed description of Floyd and the shopping and eating options there. Other Things to NoteThe driveway to the house is almost 1.5 miles of private gravel/dirt road.
