When this cottage was built in 1856, it served as living quarters for two families of house servants. Now it is a modern "Efficiency", with queen sized bed on one end and a sleeper sofa on the other end. An addition in 2013 gave space for a full kitchen and bath. And on the back side is a huge enclosed, covered patio that expands the living space dramatically. Best of all, you are in the middle of a huge horse and cattle farm. Sit on the patio enjoying your coffee and watch the horses in the paddocks right in front of you.

This is an amazing resort located about 30 minutes outside of Charlottesville, VA. I personally stayed for a week recently and it was the best vacation I have had in ages. There is plenty to do for the whole family. Stables that offer horseback riding, tours, egg gathering and purchasing, wagon rides and carriage rides. There are 3 very nice size pools, a general store that sales misc items, mini golf, swing set, corn hole, volley ball and tennis. There is a lake that rents john boats and kayaks as well as offering paddle boats complementary. My family stayed in a 3 bedroom cabin, but there are small cabins, yurts as well as a lodge with just regular rooms. Cabins and yurts have a full kitchen as well. Property has a restaurant that is very good and reasonably priced. The local area is very historical with a Civil War Museum and the home place of President James Madison.

The foot-wide, hand-sawn boards that make up the ceiling reveal this cottage's original time of construction (1856) and its original purpose (housing for house servants of the Manor). Renovated in 2012, it now boasts a modern full kitchen and bath, split-system heat pump, and charming furnishings selected by our professional interior designer. Best of all, the cottage is on our 600 acre horse and cattle farm, where you have beautiful views in all directions, no sound of traffic, endless woodland trails, and quick and easy access to all the attractions of the Charlottesville area. Plus, it has a huge covered patio on the back side, with ceiling fans, lights, a gas grill, very comfortable furniture and views of several of our horse paddocks. At Wolf Trap Farm, we have been offering our Manor House and Pond House to travelers since 2004 - to rave reviews. This new offering is ideal for couples or families with a few small children (who can use the queen-sized sofa bed) or even for two couples who do not need privacy (the sofa bed is at the opposite end of the room from the queen-sized bed). Our guests are always thrilled by the opportunity to enjoy such a large and beautiful pastoral setting. Our entry road is almost a miles long, and you pass ponds, cattle pastures and through cedar-lined sections. At the top of the hill, you find our farm complex, with the Manor House (with this Servants' Cottage snuggled in behind), our bell-roofed barn (former dairy barn), our 1856 bank barn, and other farm buildings. The Pond House and the Dairyman's house are also within view, as is the training ring for our stables. There is a wonderful fishing pond full of bass and bream, and we supply the fishing equipment. And there are miles and miles of woodland trails, two impressive rope swings, horseshoe pits, a hot tub, views of the mountains, ancient boxwoods, and horses and cows to watch. Our wild residents include geese, turkeys, deer, fox, badgers, racoons, coyotes (sadly), thousands of frogs, and the occasional snake, skunk. and field mouse. So come enjoy the farm, and create a memory that will last forever.

Children and adults enjoy fishing, hiking the woodland trails, watching the constant activities of nature around the pond, watching the horses and cattle, and horseback riding with our neighbors at Oakland Heights. Newsflash: We just added a fantastic rope swing near the Pond House, and it will hold large adults! The Pond House has two bedrooms (one queen, one bunk bed with double bed on bottom), plus a den with queen-sized pull-out couch. It is professionally decorated and altogether charming. The best feature, however, is the screened back deck overlooking the gorgeous pond. Be sure to visit the farm's website using the link at the foot of this listing. Wolftrap Farm now features four vacation rental homes, with the conversion of this 1940's era tenant cottage. Guests have access to our fish-filled ponds, endless woodland trails, a "play barn" with pool, ping-pong, Foosball, corn-hole, etc. Great for young families (bring the dog), girls' getaways, multiple generations, wine touring, visits to Monticello, Montpelier and UVA. The Milker's Cottage is far from the sounds of traffic, but only a mile off U.S. Highway 15, making for easy excursions for sightseeing and shopping. We are halfway between Gordonsville and Orange, so you have your choice of quaint village or County Seat, each less than 5 miles away. Montpelier is just 15 minutes away, directly across the mountains you see from the front of the farm. Barboursville, Horton, Keswick and Honna Lee Wineries are all within 20 minutes drive, and Early Mountain is 30 minutes away. Other Drive Times: Charlottesville (25 minutes); Culpeper (30 minutes); Monticello (35 minutes); Gordonsville or Orange (5 minutes); Montpelier (15 minutes); Richmond (60 minutes); D.C. Our historic Manor House (circa 1856) was completely renovated and refurnished in 2004. From its hilltop location, you enjoy commanding views of the Southwest Mountain range and of our vast pastures. Children and adults alike are transported far from the world of the city to life on an old Virginia estate, immaculately restored, situated on land once owned by President James Madison, whose Montpelier home is just on the other side of the mountain. This is a wonderful place to gather several generations of family in a locale where all ages will be contented. Adults savor the peace and quiet, the views, the local historic sites, museums, fine restaurants, wineries, antique shops and art galleries, scenic drives and quaint villages. Children are endlessly fascinated by having 600 acres on which to run wild, explore nature, skim rocks and fish in ponds, watch horses and cows and wildlife, peer down old wells, smell manure, chase lightening bugs and frogs, and have rural adventures of all sorts. If you can get them off the farm, they can trail ride on a neighboring farm, go rafting, see UVA, visit three former Presidents' homes within a 30 mile radius, or go to a livestock auction, horse show, or other local summer event. It is no exaggeration to describe Wolf Trap and its environs as idyllic. Spend some time on a Virginia estate, and see why so many celebrities and jet-setters who could choose to live anywhere have chosen this part of rural Virginia for their country retreats. We have two separate cottages. The Servants' Cottage is 30 yards behind the Manor House and sleeps up to four (see vrbo #442721). The Pond House is 150 yards away and sleeps up to 7 (see vrbo #90883). Visit the farm's website using the link at the end of this listing. Keywords: House

Do not be fooled by the "Plain Jane" exterior. The inside has huge living spaces, and is fabulously tricked out. With four bedrooms and a bonus children's sleeping room, Baldy's can comfortably accommodate 13 people. Baldy's Retreat is tucked up against the woods on our 600 acre horse and cattle farm. It is the fifth vacation rental home on Wolftrap Farm, opened in mid-September, 2016. Guests at Baldy's have access to the ponds, Game Barn, woodland trails, horse petting, hiking, bicycles, rental golf cart and the gorgeous scenery of Wolftrap Farm. Out the front door, Baldy's guests have views of horses that will come to the fence for treats, and may see wild turkeys passing as well. The back deck is well-shaded, and the night noises of frogs and crickets back there are free. We describe Baldy's as a Retreat because it is almost out of sight and out of earshot of the farm complex. However, a short walk down the drive brings you to additional horse paddocks with friendly horses. Just beyond, you reach the edge of the farm complex, with additional guest cottages, the Manor House, the stables, our Pavilion where we host wedding receptions, the Game Barn, and access to our woodland hiking trails. Wolftrap Farm is an excellent home base when you want to visit wineries (Barboursville, Horton, Keswick and Hona Lea are within 15 minutes; Early Mountain is within 30). Monticello is a beautiful 30 minute drive away, and Montpelier is just across the little mountains in front of the farm, 15 minutes away. Other historical venues include the Civil War Museum in Gordonsville, James Madison Museum in Orange, Wilderness Battlefield and Michie's Tavern. (Click through to our website from the bottom of this listing for a Guest Information Booklet describing local wineries, historical sites, restaurants, outdoor adventures, and other things to do when you stay at Wolftrap Farm.)

The farm complex is a Virginia Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Manor House is at the heart of the farm complex, and features 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, two kitchens, a large patio and boxwood garden. Nestled behind the Manor House is the 1856 Servants' Cottage, with its huge covered patio. Just down the hill is the Pond House, a more contemporary cottage overlooking a pond full of bass, bream, frogs and turtles. The Milker's Cottage is just beyond the Pavilion. Renovated in 2015, it has two bedrooms, two baths and a large screened porch. Past the Milker's Cottage is the driveway to Baldy's retreat, a "tricked out" modular with modern styling that sleeps 13. The entire farm is truly idyllic, with horses and cattle as part of your scenery. The Charlottesville area, with its stunning scenery, many wineries, and historic sites such as Monticello, Montpelier, and rural historic districts, has become a top choice for weddings and other special gatherings. Wolf Trap Farm hosts over 50 weddings each year, plus family reunions, anniversary parties, and big family vacations. If you do not need all the houses, we can offer you the package you want so long as it does not interfere with our week-end (Friday & Saturday) wedding packages. Our Pavilion is enclosed on three sides, accommodates 150 under roof and has an overflow patio that can seat another 40 - 50, and has a stage and ample dance floor. There is an oversized ladies' dressing/bathroom, men's bathroom, and a caterer's warming kitchen. Our hilltop ceremony site is just behind the Pavilion. Be sure to visit the farm's website (see link at foot of this listing, or search "Wolftrap Farm Gordonsville") for more details about booking the farm and Pavilion for your wedding or other large gathering. Wedding venue shoppers should view our Facebook page for lots of pictures of weddings at the farm. Just go to Facebook and search "Wolftrap Farm Gordonsville" and our page will pop up. All ages are happy at the farm. The little ones play in the great outdoors, the oldsters stroll the grounds, the teenagers and young adults go on excursions on or off the farm, the guys can fish or play pool, the gals can soak in the hot tub, and the dogs are particularly happy. If you have ever driven the winding country roads around Charllottesville, admiring the beautiful estates and wondering what it would be like to visit such places, perhaps for a wedding or party, here is your opportunity. You can find each house and cottage listed separately on this site, or visit the farm's own website for more pictures and information.
