The SpaceYour room is large and includes a double bed with a feather bed topper. There is a love seat that pulls out to provide an extra bed, stocked bookshelves, a work table, and even a woodstove in case you'd like a cozy fire. Heating and air conditioning are individually controlled in each room. Your bathroom and shower are private. The shower is in a separate room from the toilet and sink; this provides plenty of maneuverability for our guests who require accessibility and also allows two guests to get ready at the same time. The shower room also includes a washer and dryer which you are welcome to use. (Please note that we may need to come into your space to use the washer and dryer ourselves during your visit.) Our home is wheelchair accessible and we have grab bars adjacent to toilet and accessible shower. We have a shower seat to use as needed. Guest AccessYou're welcome to use the kitchen, living room, the fire pit and pergola area in the front yard, the pool (in summer) and the hot tub. ***NEW***!! We have just added a gas fire pit next to the hot tub to make the winter nights cozier! Be sure to bring your swim suit! Interaction with GuestsI will be more than happy to help you learn about the area amenities! We have several brochures for local eateries and attractions stored in the guest book. Getting AroundI have plenty of parking space. You will need a car, since there is no public transportation here in the country. Other Things to NoteI have dogs who live outside and one who spends the evening sleeping in the living room. Feel free to pet the horses or offer them a treat. Please understand that this is a working farm and while we strive to keep the inside of the house clean, the backyard area is going to be muddy, dusty, etc and there are animals out there--we think that's part of the charm!

The SpacePerhaps because I am very active outdoors, my view of the location is romantic. The Rivanna River is 4 miles away, for kayaking. The fantastic James River is 30-45 minutes. There are hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail (60 minutes to Rockfish Gap). The transcontinental bike trail is 4 miles away. Charlottesville region is home to the University of Virginia, and nearby are homes of early presidents (Monticello, Ash Lawn/Highlands and Montpelier). You’ll love the place because of the large deck, handicap ramp, beautiful woodland setting, and fireplace. Hawkwood House is good for couples, adventurers, hikers, boaters and fishermen, and travelers who want a quiet place. Kayaks are available for a local float (with put-in and pick-up) with prior arrangements. Guest AccessGround floor and second floor are available. There is a short flight of steps to the front door, but a ramp is also available. There are two bedrooms, with a full bed on the ground floor and a full bed on the second floor. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. Upstairs bath has a tub. Extra bedding available for additional guests with extra fee (full size air mattress). There is a large deck overlooking a meadow and woods. There is plenty of parking, but no public transportation out in the country. The whole house is not fully wheel-chair accessible, but there is a ramp to the deck and access to the main floor. The doors are all wide enough for a wheelchair, and the flooring is hardwood. There is room beside the downstairs toilet for an wheelchair and handrails at the commode and shower. The shower is large and there is a hand-held wand and two bench type seats in the shower. It would be suitable for someone using a walker or requiring a wheelchair who was assisted by a companion.. Interaction with GuestsI am an artist, oil painter, and live in a studio apartment in the next building. I have learned spanish, french and german, but can't say I am currently fluent. The NeighborhoodHawkwood House is in a mature forest of 100 acres. There is a 1/2 mile walking path in the woods nearby. There is a small grocery store 4 miles away. Zion Crossroads is 20 minutes away and has a Wal-Mart, state-controlled alcohol store, and many restaurants. If you are visiting relatives at Lake Monticello, that is about 20 minutes away. Charlottesville locations are 30-45 minutes drive. Getting AroundCharlottesville airport (CHO) is 45 minutes drive. Richmond airport is 1:10 drive. Other Things to NoteIt is possible to bring your dog with provision that the dog be on-leash when outside and crated when you are leaving the premises. I have a tiny Dashsund that is blind and very territorial with other dogs, but exceedingly friendly to humans. There are two cats living at the studio, who are likely to try to enter the house. Just be careful when opening the door that they don't dart in. There is a backup generator to keep things humming. In winter, from snow, and in summer, from wind storms, the power may go out.
