A private, very charming, artisan built cottage in the woods just outside of Port Townsend. Simple comfort and quiet beauty bathed in natural light. The sun porch can be shared with six. You can breakfast on the solarium balcony watching a doe and her fawn step out of the forest. Five acres centered in a "hundred acre wood". Very private, but just ten minutes from historical and culturally rich Port Townsend and five minutes from Discovery Bay beaches. This property is a great jumping off point to the entire Olympic Peninsula. The house is in a woods of large cedar, fir, and red alder trees. There is an open, sunny lawn for croquet, sunbathing, or just sitting in the absolute quiet. Do not be surprised if deer step into the lawn, or an eagle drifts just overhead. Port Townsend is 4 miles down a country road, a two lane blacktop that runs past horse ranches, a winery, grassy acreages, wooded lots, fields and ponds. It is very nice for biking. Port Townsend itself is an architectural gem with its Victorian homes and brick waterfront. It is a well know artistic haven, and is the epicenter for wooden boats in the Pacific Northwest. There are good restaurants, coffee shops, quality films, a very good micro-brewery, farmers markets, co-op shopping, and the best pizza you have ever had. The town's calendar is filled with music, film, and cultural festivals, but even without these activities, the whole area is so visually stunning that one will often spontaneously pull off the road just to take it all in. The ferry to Victoria, BC is an hour's drive away, as is the Olympic National Park. The house has parking for 8 cars. Bikers can get to town on a mostly level 4 mile ride.

The SpaceA charming studio and retreat for two across from beautiful Fort Worden. Terrific location! Just steps to the beach and great hiking. One mile to shops and restaurants in downtown Port Townsend. Includes queen bed, full bath with tub and shower combo, free WI-FI, cable TV, kitchenette equipped for indoor or patio dining. This includes a microwave, toaster oven, electric hot plate, electric fry pan, crock pot, dishes, utensils and all that is needed for simple cooking. Private garden entrance. Light filled room looks out on the garden and patio. This is the first level of a 3 story Victorian (my front door takes me to the 2nd and 3rd level of the home, where I live) . The side door at the first level goes right into the studio apartment. Guest AccessMy guests have full access to the yard and garden on the east side of the home and their own patio area. Interaction with GuestsI keep a supply of various types of tourist information in the drawer under the television.....maps, menus, things to do.....just let me know if I need to replenish something that you needed. The NeighborhoodWe are located in a very special part of Port Townsend, with the beach stairs just a couple of minutes walk from the apartment and many great hiking trails within Fort Worden. As a "life long learning center", Fort Worden offers art, music, exercise, meditation......well, there is always something going on at the Fort! Getting AroundThe Jefferson County Transit has a bus stop just down the street at the corner of Cherry and W Street. This is at the entrance to Fort Worden. Other Things to NoteAlthough the unit is named, "Katies Kottage", the studio apartment is not a separate dwelling from my home. It is the first level of my 3 story home and it is located below my kitchen and dining room. You will hear some normal household noises but we are very careful when we have guests and try not to be doing things in our kitchen area much past 7 or 8pm. If you prefer absolute quiet, this might not be the place for you (although I travel often and at those times there would be virtually no sounds above you). The TV works well but is not a newer model and does not have HDMI capability.

The SpaceThe space is located off of a long dirt road, past a house where my mother lives, on an acre of heavily forested land. This space is, indeed, rustic. The toilet (an outhouse) is outdoors, about 50 steps from the trailer. There is **NO SHOWER** on the premise. The trailer itself is very cozy, with bamboo and hardwood floors, full kitchen, lots of sitting space, a queen sized bed, one twin bed and a cozy living/dining area. Keep in mind that, while renovated, this Airstream is from 1964 and has minor "funktional" quirks. Guest AccessPlease make yourself at home! Because of the remote-ish location, the internet is really dodgy... Be respectful of neighbors and don't forget part of the drive is shared. I encourage people to back down the driveway rather than turning around in the lawn. Please note that there is NO SHOWER. If the lack of shower is a problem, there are facilities in the Port Townsend boat haven (near the brewery and an awesome tap house) that are available for public use. Interaction with GuestsI will be as prompt as possible. Since I don't live on the property, I usually need a bit of advance to tidy up, etc... but sometimes last minute reservations work out. The NeighborhoodThis is a very private, safe and serene location, half way down a dirt road. I love the "off the grid" feel the place has, and hope you will, too! Getting AroundThe place is about 5 minutes on a bicycle from the Larry Scott Trail which runs along the water, almost all the way into downtown Port Townsend. Other Things to NoteKids and animals are ok on a case by case basis, but the space is really not ideal for more than one animal, especially large dogs, or for young children. It is a rustic space with rustic surroundings and is not child-proof! My cat, as well as some of the neighbor dogs, may stop by to say hello.

The SpaceI think the space is pretty darn quiet and laid back. Guests have the option to veg out in their own space or be social in the common rooms. Guest AccessCome on in through the front door and I will show you around. Interaction with GuestsTraveling can be tiring so my home is quiet and peaceful for guests who need some respite and rejuvenation. You have full range of house and I will respect your space and need for quietude (is that even a word?). The NeighborhoodMy home is on a hill and, while not in the heart of downtown, I'm only 1.5 miles away, and 1.8 miles from Fort Worden - just a few minutes drive. If you will be without a car or bike, check out Jefferson Transit's website - a bus goes past the house hourly every day but Sunday. To walk to downtown takes 20 minutes or more. Getting AroundSee info above. If you opt to walk to town, check out Kha Tai Lagoon, The Food Co-op and the ferry to Coupeville (Whidbey Island) along the way. I have a few maps in the house and, while I am TERRIBLE at giving directions, I will do my best to recommend some great spots. Tons of public foot trails. This town loves their cyclists and pedestrians. Other Things to NoteThe living room has a fireplace, feel free to make a fire, kick back and read a book in peace.

The SpaceThis is a very private ground floor three-room space, with its own entrance and private bathroom. There is no kitchen, although we provide a hot water boiler for the provided tea and coffee, as well as a toaster oven and a refrigerator for your use.(URL HIDDEN)You walk in from the outside through your own private entrance. This leads to the first bedroom. This room gets good light and has a comfortable love seat, where you may want to hang out to read or relax. Your private bathroom is located here also. After you walk through this room, you will come into the Sitting Room, which was actually designed to be a home theater at one time. Along with two couches, this room has a screen, DVD and Video players, a Chromecast device in case you have Netflix on your computer, and a collection of many DVDs and Videos. This sitting room also has a large bookcase filled with books which you are free to browse. We have a Yamaha Electric Piano that can also be set up in this room for you piano player travelers out there! This room, being a former 'home theater', has no exterior windows, although there are many lights in the room. You then come to your second bedroom, privately tucked away. It has two windows, a queen sized bed, desk and chair, and shelves for your clothes. The coffee and tea station, with loose leaf tea and strainers, and a bag of the coffee that we roast (Port Townsend Coffee Roasting Co.), along with drip filter set ups and a hot water kettle, is located in this room. There are two doors and a set of stairs separating this whole floor space from the rest of the house for a great amount of privacy. There is a small refrigerator for you to use also, right outside the sitting room door. We live in a straw bale house, which makes it cozy and warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It is in a co-housing neighborhood right in town, halfway between Downtown and Uptown, and Fort Worden, with walking paths, open space and forest nearby, yet very close to town (10 minute bike ride on a safe bike lane or 30 min walk to downtown). One of the nicest and most accessible Food Co-ops anywhere is one mile away, and the Port Townsend Saturday Farmers' Market is a 20 minute walk from the house.(URL HIDDEN)There is a walking trail that passes nearby our house, perfect for exploring this part of Port Townsend on foot. We are also right on the path to Cappy's Trails, a trail system through the extensive woods that are right in town, and a 15 minute walk to Fort Worden, with beaches, trails, Centrum music events, and many historical artifacts from the late 1800s. The Centrum, with Fiddle Tunes, Jazz Festival, Blues Festival, and Voiceworks, is a 15 minute walk or short bike ride from the house. It is the same distance to the Fairgrounds, with its weekly events and the Jefferson County Fair in August(URL HIDDEN) We can tell you about events, attractions, and places to go to (or not). We're very familiar with town and the surrounding areas, and we own a coffee house called 'Better Living Through Coffee' right in the center of town on the water. I have roasted coffee for almost thirty years and always supply fresh roasted Organic Fair Trade coffee to my guests with a pour over set up, as well as loose teas and tea filters. If you use milk or cream, you can bring some and store it in the refrigerator that is right outside your rooms. (We also give you a $5 discount on any order at the cafe, if you mention you are our guests to the staff, so that you can go down to the coffee house for coffee and an organic scone or other pastry.) If you are planning to come to Port Townsend for one of the Centrum's festivals (Jazz, Blues, Writers' Workshop, Voice, or Choro), please ask us about a weekly rate for the space. We are Michael and Elisa. Michael's two children, 11 and 13, are here several days of the week and every other weekend. If you are 'kid people' then come anytime…..if you like peace and quiet, ask us when the kids are not around, and this would be your time! We do not have any pets, and are fairly quiet people, although we are known to play the piano and fiddle when the mood strikes and if no one minds the music! We look forward to your visit…..Please ask us any questions through the (website hidden) and we will answer quickly. Take care, Michael and Elisa Guest AccessGuests have private access to the entire ground floor, which has its own private bathroom. It is separate from the rest of the house, with its own entrance. There is a refrigerator, facilities for making tea and coffee, but no private kitchen. If you want to use the house kitchen occasionally, this can be worked out in advance with us. If you are more than 2 people, there is an extra charge as specified in the listing. Tell us when you contact us, and we will be able to accommodate your extra guests comfortably. Interaction with GuestsWe live upstairs from the guest suite, and use a private entrance. Guests can see us as much or little as they want, simply by either coming upstairs and knocking on our door, or not. As long as we are in town, we are available for any questions, recommendations, or information for our guests, and we do enjoy interacting with everyone! The NeighborhoodOur place is centrally located: 1 mile to uptown, 1 mile to Fort Worden, and 1 1/2 miles to downtown. For us, these are all in easy walking or biking distance. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful, with a lot of open space and walking trails. Getting AroundThe bus stops on the corner. It is easy to walk or bike ride virtually anywhere in town. Other Things to NoteThe space, although self-contained, has no cooking facilities, aside from a toaster oven and a hot water boiler, as per Port Townsend codes regarding tourist rentals! If you would like, we can provide dishes, utensils, etc., for you to use.

The SpaceMy home is completely private with a large flower and vegetable garden (longer stays would require watering houseplants) and a greenhouse. There are birds, rabbits and deer, as well as horses in the neighborhood. Victorian Port Townsend offers first class films, plays, restaurants, farmers' markets, dancing, and especially live music. Centrum, the Arts Center for Washington, is located here with week-long and weekend music and arts festivals. It's a major boating center with a Maritime Center and Marine Science Center and opportunities for kayaking & boating. It's at the corner of Puget Sound and the Straits of Juan de Fuca with ferry access to Seattle, Vancouver, B.C. and Victoria (from Port Angeles). The Olympic Mts. are an hour away and there are many nearer hiking trails. Guest AccessI have 3 older bicycles (bicycle trail into town near my house), older camping gear, a wonderful 'water' rower exercise machine and all amenities (except dishwasher). Basic satellite TV, iMac and wifi, but cellphone coverage is spotty at best. Landline available for local calls or to receive calls (no answering machine). Interaction with GuestsMy house is only available when I'm away traveling. I leave detailed instructions and local emergency contacts and am available via email. The NeighborhoodIt's quiet, private, and the neighbors, though at a distance, are wonderful. Getting AroundWhile there is public transit within Pt. Townsend, and to Seattle except on Sundays and infrequently M - F, there is none to my house. You would probably need a car, though you could bicycle or get a taxi - 5 miles. Other Things to NoteI'm only listing as "Available" on the calendar those dates when I know I'll be traveling. However, other dates might be available for 1-5 day periods, so contact me via "Contact Host" rather than "Request to Book," even if AirBNB says unavailable.

If this house could stoke its' own fire, it would crackle the wood and forget about the chilly wind which can jingle the rigging in winter. If ship lap siding could smile, these would pose a little crooked if you zoom into the details on your photo files. If this space speak it would prompt you to decide on a lighthearted getaway with some open days to relax; If a cottage could breathe it would pulse with the sailing racing breezes that Admiralty Inlet is known for... The spacious yard is a breeze for entertaining during your stay as there is a full length covered porch and 110' lot and garden. The pilot property runs to the mailbox at the edge of the water. We have given our community drive by access so there is local traffic in front of the cottage. It can be buzzing during the day with boating and camping season here but it is so peaceful at night you can clearly hear the bell buoy ringing in each new tide. Sea lions like to ride on it and their barking may wake you up early. Deer have the right of way here, so especially in fawn season, May on, SLOW down, freeway speeds don't fly on the peninsula, even on the highway. Bambi's are more native than nine out of 10 PT locals. They are free run in town. It is not unusual to see deer, coyotes, and river otter right on the pavement, anytime of day. REVIEW from one of our guests on 6/30-7/3/2014Thank you for allowing our family to stay in your beautiful home. This was our first experience with a vacation rental and everything about it has FAR exceeded our expectations. We all felt right at home upon our arrival and throughout our stay. When we arrived, we walked the beach and were greeted by two bald eagles flying above. One of the eagles was nice enough to perch on the pylons near the house so we could take pictures. After dinner, we enjoyed watching the sunset and were pleasantly surprised to see and otter capture a crab, bring it to shore in front of the house, and munch it down. We all went to bed with the windows open and listened to the sounds of the water against the shore. The next day we enjoyed the views of the drive along Lake Crescent on our way to SolDuc Falls. We took time to explore the Salmon Cascades, The Ancient Groves. Awesome sights everywhere! We returned to the house tired and satisfied from a long day and were able to see dolphins surfacing in the bay. Also, a deer came into the yard next door to spy on the people staying in the house. We spent our last day celebrating our dad's 73rd birthday with a drive up to Hurricane Ridge and some short walks. We saw numerous deer including a few moms with their fawns. The views of the snow capped peaks were amazing! We also took a short trip to the Elwna Valley and saw Madison Falls. This was a perfect conclusion to our stay. We would love to stay here again if we come back to the area. Thank you again for your hospitality and welcoming home. Please check out our reviews.
