The SpaceWelcome to The John W. Wright Cottage, a beautiful, bright, private apartment in one of the oldest homes in the historic downtown of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. The Judge John W. Wright Cottage is a part of Wisteria Cottage, which was built in 1872, and is a two-story, frame residence of board-and-batten construction in the late Italianate style. The house was originally built as a summer home for John W. Wright, an influential 19th-century Federal jurist and associate of Abraham Lincoln. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The apartment, part of which was formerly the summer kitchen, has been entirely remodeled and updated. The main room is a combination full kitchen and living area (13' x 13'). There is a single bedroom suitable for 2 (15' x 10'), and bath which has a large walk-in shower. The living area and bedroom have beautiful, old hardwood floors and the bathroom is tiled. The apartment is surprisingly private, with no direct access between the main house and the apartment. Walk next door, to Lot 12 Public House, a gourmet treasure, serving seasonal upscale comfort cuisine prepared by local Chef Damian Heath. Or continue 2 blocks to the downtown area and dine at Tari's, which offers often home-grown ingredients in imaginative and original recipes, delivered with attentive service in a gallery setting. Don't forget to check out Panorama at the Peak, a truly wonderful restaurant to the west of town that prepares local, organic gourmet dishes, made even more memorable by the outstanding vista (Panorama!) overlooking the confluence of the Cacapon and Potomac Rivers. There is plenty to explore! Enjoy the other numerous and diverse dining venues, antique vendors, specialty shops, Ice House Art, and spas. The John W. Wright Cottage is close to hiking, paddling, biking and bicycle rentals, the C & O Canal and Rail to Trail paths, shopping, championship golf course, and horseback riding. Amenities: Private driveway and entrance; full kitchen; Wireless Internet Access; Walking distance from local attractions; hair dryer; clothing steamer; ROKU for Netflix and Pandora streaming on the HDTV (There are no standard channels available) ; electric hot water kettle; coffee maker; toaster, reading lighting. The interior of the main house is currently being renovated. There will not be any exterior or noisy work occurring during your stay, and very likely none at all. Care will be taken to not allow this project to intrude on your stay in any way! If there is work being done, it will be being done by me, so no worries that there will be anyone else on the property! Guest AccessThe apartment is self contained, with no direct access to the main house. You have a private driveway for off street parking, and private entrance. Interaction with GuestsThe owners or owner's appointee will always be a phone call away. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation. Other Things to NoteSPECIAL OFFER: FROM APRIL THROUGH OCTOBER ONLY! When you send an inquiry and indicate that you agree to not use your car after arriving in Berkeley Springs (The house is only 2-3 blocks from most of the town of Bath), I will take $10.00 per night off of the fee. You can use your bike, you can walk, you can skateboard, whatever! This is to encourage local, to encourage an "are-cars-really-necessary?" mindset, and to have guests become more intimately familiar with the town. Let me know what you think! ( I do drive a car and am not the poster child for a minimal carbon footprint. I am personally working to be better about this myself!) PLEASE: Review the cancellation policy prior to booking! An informed guest is a happy guest!

The NeighborhoodOn our first visit to Berkeley Springs, we were drawn to the character and charm that the town offers, and we soon found ourselves in the office of a local realtor ready to make an offer on a cabin near Cacapon State Park. The cabin had “good bones” but had been neglected by the previous owners. We spent the next year renovating “Retriever’s Retreat” and making it into our haven from our hectic schedules and pace of life in DC. Soon thereafter, Claudio found another home in need of some TLC, and we quickly began work on “Jack Russell’s Ridge.” As pet lovers, we are pleased to be able to share our pet-friendly homes with your family, and we hope that your time in Berkeley Springs offers you a chance to enjoy the company of family and good friends. Getting AroundThe car is needed since there are no taxi or buses nearby. Other Things to Note- The pellet stove is not available for guest usage. The SpaceThis is a guest house on a 2.25 acre wooded lot. The main residence is about 70 ft. away. There is a hiking trail that goes down to Sir John's Run, a small stream that flows north to join the Potomac. Guests are welcome to use the hammock and Frisbee golf basket. There is a small table and chairs that you can take out onto the porch for morning coffee or happy hour. Guest AccessYou will have access to the entire space that is above the garage. Interaction with GuestsI will be nearby to help with any questions or suggestions for activities. The NeighborhoodThe front porch is across from my only visible neighbor, about 200 ft away. It's a nice woody area of a development that has very few houses at this point. There is a lot of wildlife, you'll probably see deer and lots of birds. The good thing is that downtown Berkeley Springs is just 5 minutes away. Getting AroundComing from downtown: go east on route 9 up the hill past the Castle, take a left on cold Run Valley Road, then right on Cubbyhole LN, which is about a 1/4 mile from route 9, the house is down the hill on your left. Pull up by the stairs for easy unloading. The address is 21 Riggs LN, but Riggs LN is only 300 ft. long, and does not appear in all map applications. Other Things to NoteWe have a Miniature Schnauzer named Scruffy, throw a stick for him, and he's your friend.

This cabin is located in a quiet cove of the wilderness. In fact, a short drive from the DC and Baltimore Metro area as well as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. This loft-style cabin creates a perfect environment for either a romantic getaway for two or a party of four. The open space creates a family style-friendly environment for all to enjoy. The open kitchen allows great conversation to flow from the kitchen to the eat-in dining area, as well as the living room. This quaint cabin has 2 bedrooms and 1 bath. The first bedroom has a king size bed, and the second bedroom has 2 single beds. From the living room, you can relish in the wonderful view of nature all while watching a movie. The 32 inch TV is equipped with cable, as well as access to ROKU TV (Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Pandora Radio access available). Don't want to stay inside? Great! Enjoy time together on the large 600 square foot deck while grilling on the Weber gas grill and catching up with friends and/or family. In sum, the deck provides ample opportunities of just relaxing and taking in the gorgeous scenery, particularly the mountain view. Want to go for a hike, shopping or a spa? Berkeley Springs is known for having the best spas (most spas use fresh spring water) and the wondering state park – Cacapon State Park that offers swimming, hiking and a Robert Trent Jones golf course. Also, tubing and kayak rental on the Potomac River are a short drive away. And, don't forget the Troubadour!! For those who like to fish, there are two community ponds and a creek for fishing. In addition, there are plenty of restaurants including James Beard recognized Lot 12, spas, studios, galleries, shops, and antique stores for all to enjoy. In short, Berkeley Spring, WV has something for everyone. Guest AccessGuests have full access to the cabin and the surrounding 5 acres of property. Guests can also enjoy the community pond located on Oak Hill Road (the upper pond). Guests can park under the carport. Guests do not have access to the pellet stove (it's very dangerous to operate). This property is managed directly by the owner and not a management company. The NeighborhoodLocal Interests There are many things to do beyond Moss Hill. Below is a list of local attractions, shopping, grocery stores, liquor stores, restaurants, and bars. Below are a few of my favorite places: Attractions: Cacapon State Park: Enjoy miles of hiking trails, a beautiful scenic overlook, lake with a sand beach and paddle boat rentals, and a Trent Jones golf course. Berkeley Springs State Park: Enjoy this beautiful park in downtown Berkeley Springs that has its own spa, public baths, mineral springs, and public pool. Don’t forget to check out George Washington’s bath tub. Berkeley Springs Castle: Look above as you wander the state park in downtown and you’ll see a castle. That’s right, an actual castle overlooking the town. While not open for tours, you can drive into the entrance and snap a couple of photos. Star Theater: This depression era movie theater on the main street shows second run movies for $4.50. The delicious popcorn is cheap too! And, for a dollar extra, you can reserve a couch. Paw Paw Tunnel: Located about a 30 minute drive from Berkeley Springs, the Paw Paw tunnel is part of the C&O canal. Built in the mid 1800’s, the tunnel stretches over 3,000 feet. New Earth Granary: The Granary offers an eclectic mix of entertainment brought to you by local musicians, artists, and players. For a list of events, visit Atasia Spa: Quite simply the best spa in Berkeley Springs, Frankie Tan and the team at Atasia Spa offer many services at great prices. Berkeley Springs Farmers Market: Located adjacent to the Berkeley Springs Park and across from the courthouse, this wonderful little farmers market offers fresh vegetables, flowers, and offerings from other local vendors. Open each Sunday from 11-2 and Thursdays from 2-5 during from April thru December. Thursday hours in July & August. Shopping: There are some really great shops in downtown Berkeley Springs. From antique malls to holistic shops, there is something for everyone. One of our favorite shops to find treasures is Youngbloods Antiques. It’s located roughly a mile east on RT 9 outside of Berkeley springs. Groceries: Food Lion: This full service grocery store has everything you need during your stay. Located at the south end of town off HWY 522. Just look for the McDonalds and you’re there. Community Garden Market: Looking for something local and organic? Check out the Community Garden Market. Located on the main street, this quaint little shop will help you get your organic on! Liquor Stores: 7 Eleven: Yes, there is a small liquor store located inside this convenience store. The store is located at the intersection of HWY 522 and RT 9 South (at the bottom of the hill leading to the castle). Top Shelf Liquors: For a better selection than 7 Eleven, check out Top Shelf Liquors located in a plaza off HWY 522 near the Dollar General. Address: 261 Berkmore Pl | Phone: Dining: Lot 12 Public House: Located in a beautifully restored Victorian home on a hill overlooking the town, Lot 12 boasts West Virginia’s only James Beard Chef. The restaurant offers high quality farm-to-table meals with a menu that changes every season. For the best dining experience, choose Lot 12. Reservations are required (phone number hidden). A very casual restaurant and bar offering large portions at unbeatable prices. This bar and grill also doubles at the West Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame and is owned by Jim McCoy, who discovered Patsy Cline. Enjoy $1.50 draft beers and the house drink, rocket fuel! If you’re lucky, they may be raffling off 10lb slabs of bacon during your visit. Local bands can also be heard outside against the backdrop of the beautiful valley and capped by the Cacapon mountain ridge. Directions: turn left when exiting Sleepy Creek forest. Go 1/8 mile and turn left to continue on Highland ridge road. Go approximately 4 miles. Just past the intersection of Ruppenthal road, the Troubadour will be on your left. We do not have any child furniture such as bed bumpers, booster seats or high chairs, no plastic dishes/cups, there are no outlet covers or other child safety measures, etc.). There is no cable TV or local channels here. TV provided can only play DVDs - please bring your favorite movies on DVD, or rent from one of the local RedBox vending machines. Like most cabins in Berkeley Springs, we're on a treated well water system. Water is treated and tested regularly, however due to the high mineral count in the well water, it does have a slight metallic/mineral taste to it. Some people love it, but some who are really used to city water might be put off by it. You may want to bring some bottles of water for drinking purposes if you are sensitive to this sort of thing. There is no washer or dryer available at the house. There is a laundromat in Berkeley Springs (Whale of a Wash) in the same shopping center as the Food Lion. We warmly welcome all guests, and do not discriminate based on race, creed, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. #HostWithPride
