The “LIGHT” has defied explanation since it was first sighted many years ago, although theories abound. To observe the phenomenon, one must drive north from Watersmeet on U.S. 45 for 4 miles toward the neighboring village of Paulding, and take Robbins Pond Road for a short distance west – an unimproved rural lane once part of a military road authorized by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War in anticipation of a British attack through Canada. Surrounded by dense woods and from the summit of nearby hills, the mysterious light can be observed almost every night once darkness has descended on the northern wilderness. It appears to rise slowly out of the forest and then hovers low in the sky for varying intervals – ranging from a couple of minutes to over a quarter of an hour. Often described as looking like a “bright star” it first seems to be a campfire ember, reaching an intense reddish glow, then becoming a haze and finally receding to a mere spark before disappearing into the night. Explanations vary from fanciful to factual. Some say it’s the spirit of a long dead mail carrier ambushed by Indians over a century ago; others insist it is the ghost of an engineer killed in a nearby railroad accident in years gone by. One woman thinks it’s a mystical sign of religious significance. In the meantime, “THE MYSTERY LIGHT” continues to baffle, intrigue and mystify the visitor. Care to enjoy some fun in northern Wisconsin? Our beautiful executive log homes located just west of Land O' Lakes, Wisconson, provides lodging that you can feel right at home in. This featured full log home, Bear's Den, is on beautiful Landing Lake, and is fully equipped, with indoor towels, kitchen utensils, bed sheets and coverings. Bear's Den Lodge has three bedrooms, two full baths, and a finished basement tv room. Two of the bedrooms are on the main floor, and a queen sized bed in the loft. The main floor bedrooms consist of a king sized bedroom and adjacent private bathroom. The other main floor bedroom consists of two bunk beds, which sleep four people total. Bring your own disposal items such as cleaners, paper items, coffee filters, extra ice, beach towels. Two other lodges are available adjacent and lakefront, but are not pictured here: Moose Lodge and Eagle's Nest. Eagle's Nest is the only lodge that allows pets. You may rent or possibly buy your own permanent fractional ownership share of five weeks/year, with the summer week time frame recurrent and consistent year to year. Ask us which lodge is available because this calendar is for all three. We only reserve by the weekly rate, Sunday to Sunday from June to August. If you can only stay shorter, no problem, come and go as you can with the lockbox entry code we will provide with your final payment. July 4th, Christmas and New Years are an extra $100. September through May is a three night minimum, nightly rate. If you can only stay two nights, that's fine, but we have the to charge the minimum rate for three nights. During summer, if we still have openings within two weeks of your visit, we can reserve for you at a three night minimum, with 10% off. Further pictures of Moose, the four bedroom, and Eagle's Nest, a three bedroom can be emailed upon request. Our calendar shows openings in at least one lodge, but doesn't show recent reservations where we are waiting to receive the down payment and contract. Once you reserve, your initial 20% down payment needs to be a check mailed and received within four days. The 80% balance and $500 damage deposit are two separate checks, which need to be received at least 30 days prior to your stay. We will let you know when we receive your payments by email. We will email the lockbox entry code upon receipt of the signed contract and all three checks. Landing Lake is a sparkling 220-acre lake on the Wisconsin side of the Wisconsin-Michigan border. Connected to 131-acre Mill Lake, the two lakes offer a combined 351 acres and over seven miles of shoreline for swimming, fishing, our small boat, pontoon, paddle boat, canoe, and kayaks. Our lodges sit at the end of the road, with 700 plus feet of frontage on 26 acres. We have fishing for northern pike and perch out your back door and you will enjoy the two piers, and watercraft that are provided. All but the pontoon are shared among the three cabins on a first come, first serve basis. The pontoon boat uses a two hour sign up sheet in the boathouse to schedule your time upon arrival. There always seems to be plenty of time for each lodge. . Our cabin is air conditioned for those occasional warm summer days, and our beautiful and rustic stone surround gas fireplace is cozy when the temperature drops. We heat with forced air propane in the winter. The loft and large windows facing the lake are part of the charming full log construction of the cabins. The lodges sport their own fire pits and chairs lakeside, as well as a large upper deck toward the lake on each home. The lodges are somewhat private with trees between the campfire pits and lodges. While you can see the adjacent lodge about 100 feet away, there is a sense of privacy. A walking path in front of the cabins is shared and leads to the two piers and boat house. We take the pier out any time after October 1, so if you choose this time period, the watercraft may or may not be available. Watercraft are available after June 1 for your use, and may be in sooner if weather permits. NO pier or boat access is available for your personal boat or jet skiis on the lake. There is no public landing and we don't have our own dock. However, you could rent a boat locally, park it on the trailer in our parking area, and visit nearby lakes. There is room to park and turn around your boat or snowmachine trailers on site. With 26 acres at the end of a road, and over 700 feet of frontage, though we're only about three miles from the town of Land O Lakes, one feels like they are in the middle of the woods. And in fact you are-- Nicolet National Forest and Ottawa National Forest cover much of the area surrounding Land O Lakes and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Located close to the snowmobile trails and only 20 miles from Eagle River, Wisconsin, the snowmobile capital of the world, you can enjoy the many winter activities the area offers. Watersmeet, Michigan, 10 miles north, offers a casino, cross country skiing, a nearby downhill ski area and golfing. About one mile further west on County Road B lies Black Oak Lake, voted a top clean Wisconsin Lake. A paved bike trail abuts County B and can be reached from the gravel road leading to the property. Black Oak Lake has a nice sandy beach, boat launch, day picnic area and changing room. It makes a fun day of great swimming near by. You are welcome to swim in Landing Lake and jump off the swim raft. The water gets deep fast in front of the cabins, and the lake shore is heavily vegetated. We often see waterfowl of all kinds and enjoy loons and eagles routinely. Down a beautiful wooded peninsula trail past all three cabins is a natural small wading area, with a gentle slope. We have room to park your trailers for boats or snow machines. However, there is no public launch or boat launch for your personal boat or jet ski use. Many nearby lakes and the Cisco Chain of lakes have boat launches. We will be happy to have you enjoy the cabin, but no so happy about any recreational vehicle or tent camping on the property. Call or us write to see which lodge is available and works best for your group. Your Northwoods vacation awaits - contact us today. DO YOU HAVE AVAILABILITY FOR OUR DATES? *YES, the calendar is always up to date! If it says that it hasn't been updated for a few days, that just means that we haven't made changes to it recently. There is not another calendar anywhere. If it says we are booked, we are booked! If it says we have an opening, we'd love to have you stay with us! 2) DO WE NEED TO BRING OUR OWN FIREWOOD? *YES, you should bring your own firewood. There is a woodshed that *may have* wood in it. If there is some left, you are welcome to use it. However, we are having an ongoing issue with theft of the wood by both guests and an undetermined third party so when it's gone it will not be replaced. ONLY the fireplace and fire pit are approved for fires. The wood stove is non-functional and may not be used. 3) ARE TOWELS AND BEDDING PROVIDED? *YES, both towels and bedding are provided. 4) CAN WE HAVE A PARTY AT THE CABIN? CAN WE SMOKE? *NO, under no circumstances will smoking or house parties be allowed. Large family reunions need to be discussed in advance. 5) DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN COFFEE AND FILTERS? *YES, you need to bring your own coffee and filters. There is a Mr. Coffee brand coffee pot if you would like to use it. 6) IS THERE ENOUGH PARKING FOR MY VEHICLE AND TRAILER? *YES, there is plenty of parking. The driveway goes in a huge circle so trailers do not need to backed in and turned. There is room for at least 10 trucks with trailers, but of course there will never be that many, as parties are not allowed! 7) DO YOU HAVE A GRILL? IS IT OPEN IN THE WINTER? *YES, there is a charcoal grill available but depending on the depth of snow it may be hard to access in the winter. There is also a gas grill on the back deck with a spare propane tank in the front closet(usually). The spare propane has 'disappeared' several times, so if you definitely want to grill it is safest to bring charcoal. 8) DO I NEED TO BRING TOILET PAPER? *There is an initial supply of toilet paper and paper towels provided. If your party needs a large amount, please bring additional paper products with you. 9) IS THERE A STOVE AT THE CABIN FOR COOKING? *There is both a gas stove with an oven as well as a microwave. There is not a dishwasher and guests are asked wash any dishes that are used. 10) DO YOU HAVE INTERNET ACCESS? *NO, we do not have internet access and cell access is limited at the cabin depending on your carrier. (Owner Nikki has AT&T and she has little/no coverage at the cabin. Owner Mark has Verizon and his coverage is better but not great.) 11) WHAT ABOUT WILDLIFE? *YES, there is plenty of beautiful wildlife in our area. There was a bear sighting at the cabin in 2014 due to guests leaving trash outside instead of in the bear-proof receptacle (not allowed!). Whitetail deer and wild turkey are the most common visitors. This is a cabin set on 80 acres of otherwise undisturbed pure Michigan wilderness so this of course an abundance of wildlife including but not limited to whitetail deer, rabbit, fox, coyote, otter, mink, turkey, grouse, etc. Always observe from a distance and exercise common safety sense. In addition, it is normal in northern Michigan when the weather starts to become cold that wildlife will start seeking out warm areas to winter. On occasion particularly in the fall, we will have a field mouse or two that tries to make his winter home in the cabin. Again, this is not a reflection on the cleanliness of the cabin but a normal annual occurrence in the northwoods. We do have repellent stations in place but one still may be seen on rare occasion. Black flies and mosquitos are other common pests in the northwoods and you may see some in the windows, in particular if the doors have been left open without the screen. Of course if you have other questions you are always welcome to contact us.

The lakes are fed by rain and melting snow and are therefore crystal-clear. Streams and their potentially polluted waters do not enter the lakes because of Sylvania's location near a watershed divide, at a relatively high elevation. Sylvania's forest contains one of two large remnants of virgin northern hardwoods remaining in the Great Lakes region. Stickley (GNIS FID: 1621776) is a populated place located within the Township of Watersmeet, a minor civil division (MCD) of Gogebic County. The elevation of Stickley is 1,634 feet. Stickley appears on the Thayer U.S. Geological Survey Map. Gogebic County is in the Central Time Zone (UTC -6 hours). Many areas in some states are not this high. Just north of the cabin is the location of the historic "Stickley Lodge" the wilderness retreat for Albert Stickley of Grand Rapids, Michigan{Stickley Brothers Company/Quaint Furniture} brother of Gustav Stickley. Described as palatial, it had eight bedrooms and a huge $30,000.00 pipe organ. Albert used the location to oversee his lumber holdings. After his death lodge was turned into a resort "to a few who desire refinement and the companionship of cultured guests." Burned in the 40s. At one time property had its own railroad spur. With a big "S" on the hillside marking his private train stop, Mr Stickley could be dropped off at the covered shelter with steps leading up the hill to the lodge. You can still make out the grading for the tracks thru the swamp that passes Stickley Lake/Turtle Lake. You can enjoy the area of some of the great man and woman that passed through this area many years ago. Visit the area museum, walk through the National Forest, and enjoy the adventures. The pantry gives ample space for your food supplies, and newly acquired Hotpoint stove will serve your needs along with a microwave, and a crock pot. A Weber grill adds flavor and variety. A modern propane stove takes the chill out of the air. The two bedrooms each feature a Queen Size bed, and a decorative fan to add to your comfort. A Queen sized bed sleeps two more. We often watch the birds, chipmunks, otters and mink go about their business. Eagles, Loons, and ducks call our lakes home. Our land line and Dish TV let you keep in touch with rest of the world. The bathroom features a shower and a handicap bar to assist those who need it. A gradual path with very few steps meanders done to a steel pier that can accommodate sun bathers, and deck chairs. It is possible to rent our pontoon boat or secure your own boat to the dock which can accommodate three boats. Contour Maps show the topography of the fifteen lakes and help catch all varieties of fresh water game fish.
