After WWII GI's re-structured the barracks. The floors are original to that structure. You’ll find plenty of other sites and activities to explore near our little town of Independence, some of which include: •90 min to Mammoth for Skiing •15 minutes to Lone Pine for restaurants, shopping •40 min to Bishop •Inyo County History Museum •Onion Valley •Manzanar Museum •Bristle Cone Forest •Bishop, Train Museum, much more •Mount Whitney Golf Course •Diaz Lake •Owens Lake •Lone Pine Film History Museum •Death Valley National Park Breathe clean air and see stars forever. Do some summer Hiking in Onion Valley or Mt.Whitney. Fall and Spring, enjoy the desert and venture to Death Valley. Winter, go skiing in Mammoth. Bring your fishing gear, hiking gear, ATVs or boats. For Road Trippers, this is a favorite stop for travelers going from Las Vegas, to Death Valley, Furnace creek, Panamint Springs, and Tahoe. This is another favorite stop for families or groups of skiiers driving from LA or OC to Mammoth for winter fun. More about the floors.....I was all set to put in laminate flooring since the condition is too rough to refinish. However, when I pulled up the carpet, my hunch about the shape of the structure was confirmed. This house indeed is build around a Manzanar Barrack. The Master Bedroom floor is in original 1942 condition-good? or bad?-you decide, but I want the floor looked at by a historian to determine if there is some marking anywhere that might indicate which Japanese American family(s) once lived in this structure. There are original floor patchings here & there. I want to allow time for any interested historian to look at the floor and help me determine if someone's name was etched in. It was moved a few miles, and after WWII, GI's returned and built homes using the Manzanar Barracks. The Japanese American Citizens and their young sons who enlisted and also lost lives in WWII--what did they get after the war? Go to Manzanar and reflect on the situation, and maybe you can appreciate why I respect the history of this home. The floors are in original condition in some sections, and have some patching and tar paper. Most of the floor area is or will be covered area rugs that can easily be removed and cleaned.Floors are clean but are in rough condition-paint,and in corners, patches. Good news for skiiers and outdoor adventurers; easy to clean. Guest AccessWhile your family or group will have access and use of the front of the house, Nan the host who is a busy educator, lives on premises part of the time, and may be present to greet you depending on your respective schedules. There is only ONE bathroom in the home. While it is very clean,it is shared. Four people may sleep in the one bedroom: 2 adults and 2 children is ideal. If there are additional adults in the party, the 2 sofas may be used. Plenty of clean linens, mats, blankets, pillows and electric blankets available. The laundry is available, both washer & dryer. However the w&d are old.... Lots of parking, multiple car parking okay Interaction with GuestsThe best way to reach Nan is via TEXT from your personal phone at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). identify INDEPENDENCE and your question. Nan lives in the home part of the time, but has a busy schedule. Every effort will be made to respect the privacy needs and comfort level of your family or group. Nan at times lives in a private bedroom in back of the home part of the time. Bathroom will be shared. Kitchen will be shared. Interaction with guests depends on guests' needs as well as respective schedules and itinerary, so please communicate those preferences, whether local information is desired or more privacy is preferred. The bathroom is shared. Nan is just a phone call away & will happily answer any question. This is a small, friendly town. 2 gas stations, post office, Inyo History museum, which has great information, and Independence is near Manzanar. The area has many things to explore! I will leave information on the bookshelves and a big map on the wall. This is our second home, and we may or may not be in town when you arrive, but will be available by phone or text as needed. The NeighborhoodGroceries--Lone Pine--15 min Independence has a population of about 300 and is the Inyo County seat. There are two gas stations, two restaurants and a subway. There is the wonderful Inyo County history museum 3-4 blocks north west. The Japanese Manzanar museum is a few miles south. Please be respectful of this quiet little town. Be low key in the evening. There are places a few miles away if you like late campfires or late drinking and talking out of doors please go to a nearby campsite. Neighbors are very nice and like it quiet. Getting AroundUnless you flew in--and there is an airport-- you probably drove. You need a car for most things, but can walk to a couple of restaurants or mini-marts. You can walk to church in the am, or to the museum. Your party probably wants a car to get to the fishing spot, or other local destinations. Go to Lone Pine for more choices of restaurants; only 15 minutes away. There is plenty of parking in front of the home. It should be no problem to park an ATV Trailer, motorcycles, a Big Rig for Truckers, boat or large vehicle. Other Things to NoteI do my best to encourage hotel standard cleaning -- based on light disinfecting, laundry, and changing sheets. Guests are expected to completely clean up and be responsible, especially the tub, bathroom, dishes, pans, and kitchen. It is expected that guests will be respectful and that: 1. There are no pets to clean up after, hair or messes, accidents or smells. 2. There are no illegal parties or drugs. 3. There has been no smoking, at all, in the house. 4. There is nothing missing, nothing damaged. PLEASE REVIEW PHOTOS. The main part of this home used to be a Manzanar barrack, and floors -though mostly under carpet-are still rough in parts. +1 Queen bed + 1 Queen fold out sofa-bed, firm 1-long sofa + 1 Queen Aerobed--self-inflates--new & available while it lasts 2 twin sleeping mats -- There are extra space heaters for every room & it is quite comfortable. The gas dryer and gas heater are hooked up, work great.
