The SpaceThe Captain’s Cabin -- Welcome This is the upper unit of a two unit house. For larger groups we recommend renting both units This unit has a full kitchen, dinning room, large living room with a wood burning fireplace (with a fold-out full size air mattress), two bedrooms (one queen size bed and two singles), and two full bathrooms. Please note the two single beds are located in a room referred to as the sleeping porch (our personal favorite room of the house) directly off of the master bedroom. There is one parking spot included with this unit and additional parking available on the side of the house. There is a gas and a charcoal grill available for your use. This unit also has beautiful and large back deck with sweeping views of the bay. ALL PRICES INCLUDE THE MARIN COUNTY OCCUPANCY TAX of 10% WHICH WE ARE REQUIRED TO COLLECT. This house reflects the lives of my grandparents. My grandfather was a master mariner by profession. He sailed in the American Merchant Marine from the 1920s to the 1940s, circumnavigating the globe more than 25 times. His wartime service was as captain of the Liberty ship, SS John Fiske, whose identifying plaque from the ship’s bridge is on the eastern exterior wall next to the steering wheel. When they retired in the 1970s, my grandparents chose this location so that he and my mother could have a quiet life in the woods, but at the same time could see the horizon and part of the sea. The tree-top setting is just a half-mile from the town of Inverness with its store, post office, café, and restaurants; and a ten-minute drive from the restaurants, shops and weekend Farmers’ Market of Point Reyes Station. Beaches, hiking trails and the Point Reyes National Seashore are within walking distance or a short car ride, and the south-facing deck is sunny and warm all day. But don't take our word for it--read what the New York Times had to say about Salt Water, the local restaurant, and the delights of the wider area. '36 hours in Marin County', 27 Jan. 2013. We hope that you enjoy our house, enter into its spirit enjoying the views of Tomales Bay, the hills, woods and beaches of western Marin and Elephant Mountain bathed in the ever- changing light of the Point Reyes Peninsula, a very special ‘Island in Time’. The SpaceTree House is perched at the very top of the Inverness Ridge, with sunrise and sunset views. Secluded and comfortable, it's perfect for families and groups, and can comfortably sleep 8. The ground floor features 4 bedrooms (King, Queen, Queen, 2 Twin) and 2 full bathrooms. All rooms have windows looking out into the trees. Upstairs is a large open floor plan with kitchen, dining, living room with high wood ceilings, with french doors leading out onto the deck with a gas BBQ and views for many miles. The layout is truly perfect for families and small groups, whether hanging out together upstairs with the open floor plan, or wandering off for a bit of personal space. The home was re-built twenty years ago, after the Mount Vision fire, and was designed specifically to be enjoyed as a family retreat. You will enjoy the thoughtful and functional feel of this home, as well as the stunning location. Comfortable, clean, inviting, without being too ostentatious nor pretentious, this is a perfect home for relaxing with friends and family and enjoying the miles of trails literally at your doorstep. To view a YouTube video tour, search for: Tree House - Family Retreat w/ Views Guest AccessThe property shares over 200 yards of property line with the National Park, with several trails running in various directions directly from the property. Mountain bikers will be in heaven, as will hikers and bird-watchers and those with strollers and toddlers. The trails around the property are well marked and maintained, and are ideal for strollers or those who prefer strolling to hiking. Numerous smaller trails branch off for those who wish to explore further, with some serious loops possible, like down to Drakes Estero and back, or over to Limantour Beach. We have a nice kitchen stocked with all the condiments and spices you'll need, as well as every cooking and baking implements you can think of. Organic coffee beans, grinder, french press, coffeemaker, good sugar, cinnamon, tea, but the cream is up to you. On clear days you can see Mount St. Helena 40 miles to the Northeast, and the Farallone Islands 30 miles to the Southwest. Be sure to stock up on groceries, because once you're up here, you won't want to leave. The NeighborhoodCOMMUNITY Inverness is located on the west shore of Tomales Bay, which runs southeast along the line of the San Andreas Fault. Surrounded by Point Reyes National Seashore, it is primarily a residential community, with little industry other than tourism. It has a small downtown area with a general store, post office, library, two very good restaurants, one gift shop and a coffee shop. A third restaurant is located a short way north of downtown. There are also a number of hotels and inns spread throughout the town. One aspect of the town is a concentration of recreational (and some commercial) boating. There is a small public marina, a few private piers, and the Inverness Yacht Club. Portions of the John Carpenter film The Fog as well as most of his film Village of the Damned were shot in and around Inverness. HISTORY The town of Inverness is 15 miles or so from Drake's Bay on the Pacific Ocean, named after Sir Francis Drake, who explored the coast in the 16th Century. Although Drake's official log was lost, the ship's doctor's log described landing in an area that reminded him of the White Cliffs of Dover. Drake's Bay is backed by similar-looking cliffs, leading many to believe this is where the ship landed. The region became the property of James Shafter, who began to develop the property in the 1890s. It became a summer resort where people from San Francisco and Oakland came to camp, hike and swim in Tomales Bay. Many built small summer cabins that still exist today. Small steamboats took day trippers down the bay to secluded beaches. They left from Brock Schreiber's boathouse, which has been preserved and is a prominent local landmark with its prominent sign "Launch for Hire". The first post office opened in 1897. In 1995, Inverness Ridge was the site of the Mt. Vision Fire, which burned a large area of Point Reyes National Seashore and a number of homes built on the ridge. The town itself was threatened but was saved by helicopters dipping water from Tomales Bay to drop on the Bishop pine forest between the town and the burning ridge top. Selected Top Restaurants * Saltwater in Inverness. Excellent Seafood, $$ * Cafe Reyes in Pt Reyes. Excellent Italian from Wood burning oven, $$ * Osteria Stellina. Excellent Italian in Pt Reyes, $$ * Sir and Start at the Olema. Excellent fine dining (California cuisine) $$ Top Trails in Pt Reyes National Park * Pierce Point trail * Bear Valley trail * Chimney Rock trail * Earthquake Trail (in Olema) Top Beaches * Kehoe Beach (Pacific side). Stunning. Some shallow/deep. Local favoriate. * North Beach - Beautiful !!!! * South Beach - Beautiful !!!! Getting AroundThere is lots of parking on the property !! Not a problem there. Public transportation in the area is very limited; plan on driving to get to/around Inverness. Once you're in town, it's only a few mins to get from one beach or trail to the other. Other Things to NoteYou will be surrounded by the Pt Reyes National Seashore park. ACTIVITIES Top things to do in the area, include: extensive & lite hiking along hundreds of trails, swimming and kayaking in the usually warm Tomales bay (warm because it is shallow), camping in the Pt. Reyes National Park, bird watching, and all that the natural outdoors has to offer. Lots of wildlife are worth the trip: Tule Elk, Deer, Seals, etc.
