This summer cottage on an island in Maine overlooks the beautiful Penobscot Bay. This rustic cottage has a moderate living space with a wood-burning stove, an inner porch with a great view of the bay, and a lot of family charm. The house was built in the 1930s by two sisters of the Allen family, who owned the property next to this one. This cottage has been passed down through the family and cherished by each generation. The entire property has a lovely view of the Penobscot Bay. Amenities include: WiFi, beach access, shared driveway but private parking, w/d in home. There are only two markets on the island, so we suggest getting your groceries before embarking on your journey by way of ferry departing from Lincolnville. If you are looking for a calm, rustic retreat away from it all this is the cottage for you. ~ If your party needs a little extra room, we have an additional cabin for 2 on the property that you may also consider ~ See HomeAway Listing # 4210882 ~

Islesboro is a Maine island community located three miles from the mainland in the magnificent upper Penobscot Bay. It is reached via the Maine State Ferry Service. The Margaret Chase Smith is a 34-car and passenger ferry, leaving from the Lincolnville Terminal on the mainland and cruising to Grindle Point Lighthouse Terminal on the island. There are nine round-trips daily from May until October and a slightly varied schedule the balance of the year. Ferry trips offer the opportunity to view the inspiring West Penobscot Bay with its many small islands and the Camden Mountains from its observation decks. Our home, Barnegat, is located on a private road in the Dark Harbor area of the island. When coming to the house you will drive south on Pendleton Point Road, passing through the village of Dark Harbor. Continuing on, the road will become more of a country road with lush trees, stone outcroppings and east and west views of the bay, outer islands, and the Camden Hills. Barnegat is located on Boardman Point on three acres of wooded land and is one of the most southerly homes on the island. A bonus with living on this part of the island is that almost every afternoon at 3:30 the wind changes with the prevailing wind bringing a fresh southwest breeze. As you approach the house there is parking for four cars in the garage driveway. Walking the stone path you will find landscape greenery on your right and a lawn defined by woods and ferns on your left. The path will take you to the front door. Entering the house you will be in the front room. Directly opposite the door there is a glass wall looking out to a stone patio, wicker furniture and the gardens. The front room serves as a greeting room and is furnished with comfortable furniture, a woodstove, television/DVD cabinet and a table for casual meals or tea. To the right of the entry is the home office, from the office is a full bath and a laundry room. Outside the laundry room is a private outside shower, a treat for the senses. To the left of the entrance there are French doors leading to the kitchen. The kitchen is a good work space with granite counters, a double sink, and three skylights to provide extra light in the day hours and windows to the stars at night. Appliances include a double oven, a microwave, a gas range, and a refrigerator with an ice maker. Small appliances include a coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, waffle iron, ice cream maker and food processor. Equipment for cooking and baking, dishes, table service, table linens, two lobster pots and the lobster dinner tools are all provided. Kitchen pantry and cleaning products are also provided. These rooms are located in the original part of the house, which is based on a traditional Maine cape. A second French doorway in the kitchen will lead you to the post and beam part of the house. This open, airy, bright part of the house contains the balance of our living space. Going through the French doors you will find a large open living and dining area. The living room has comfortable conversation seating, a small library, a large desk and a gas fireplace. The dining room has a table that seats eight graciously. The entire room is surrounded with large windows and French doors in the living and dining areas lead to a stone patio. Being in these rooms is like being outside, close to nature. A staircase from the living room leads to the upstairs hall. Off the hall there is a full bath and three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds and the third bedroom has two three-quarter sized twin beds, which are wider than typical twin beds. The bedrooms are lovely, private and quiet. Ceiling fans keep the rooms comfortable for sleeping. All bath and bed linens are cotton. Each room in the house is furnished with family heirlooms, some antiques, quality furniture and a lifetime of art and poster collections. A large patio runs along the back side of the house and includes comfortable wicker seating, a 12-foot picnic table for outdoor dining and a charcoal grill. This area is surrounded by gardens, trees, and stone walls. The front yard has a rock wall and an open lawn surrounded by trees. After dark turn off all the house lights to create the perfect place to stretch out blankets on the lawn and do star gazing that will take your breath away. A five-minute walk across the lawn through the woods will take you to a 12-acre nature site, Pendleton Point, owned by the town. It is known as the town beach, but is seldom busy. There are walking paths, ice age rock formations, beaches for swimming and excellent canoe, kayak and small boat launching areas. This is a place to observe sunrise, sunset and all the hours in between. The expansive beauty of the sky, the bay and other islands is an enrichment for the human spirit. Check on-line for the scheduled path of the International Space Station as it is often visible as it flashes across the night sky. In the garage are beach chairs, towels, baskets for beach combing and those blankets needed for star gazing. Three Bald Eagles live on Job Island, our next-door island. They come regularly to our part of the island to hunt and display their impressive being. Bird watching is a favorite pastime on a Maine island. If you choose to leave our private, quiet home there are many activities offered on the island. The Alice L. Pendleton Library has books, magazines, newspapers, videos, books on tape and 24-hour access to WiFi. And, yes, you can get a library card to use during your stay; just be certain that you know the name of your home owner. There is a remarkable book and bake sale on a mid-July weekend at the library. Island organizations present numerous activities. The Island Trust has an extraordinary number of protected walking trails and educational programs. The Up Island Church hosts a concert series with a pot luck dinner before the performance. Just show up at 5:30 on concert evenings with a dish to share, your beverage and place setting and you will dine with interesting, welcoming people and enjoy great food. Each Sunday evening at the church, The Forum presents a different speaker addressing current topics. Sailing lessons are available at Big Tree Boating located at Big Tree Beach on Seal Cove. Fishing is a popular activity at Big Tree. Also known as Mosely’s Dock, this is one of the town‘s public recreation areas and it is a lovely spot. Riding and riding lessons are available at the Pripet Riding Club, one of the many non-profit organizations on the island. Even if you do not ride, be certain to visit this beautiful horse farm. The Islesboro Community Center has dinner and dancing, with great music, each Wednesday evening. The ICC is also a local WiFi hot spot and has a café, Rabbit Corner. The Historical Society has a permanent museum display and a lecture series. Each week a different art show is held at the museum featuring island artists and some artists from away. There is a reception for each art exhibit on Friday evenings from 5-7 pm with wine, iced tea and goodies. Art work can be viewed at leisure and again there are welcoming people to meet. The exhibits continue until the following Wednesday. A Farmers Market is held each Wednesday morning at the island school. There are two grocery markets on the island for other shopping. The Island Market has exceptional baked goods and there is an independent home baker up island. Lobster can be ordered from the markets or from a local lobsterman. Everything from the annual rummage sale, to shopping in small stores and a constant round of activities will provide enough activities for everyone. Places that you do not want to miss are the Dark Harbor Shop for ice cream and Artisan Books and Bindery on Derby Road. Artisan Books is one of the island gathering places. Great books, coffee, homemade cookies and a congenial proprietor who knows everything about books and the island, can be found at this favorite island place. It is important to note that the island has a Health Center that is staffed by three physician’s assistants and provides regular office hours and 24-hour emergency health care. Islesboro is an exceptional place and Barnegat is an exceptional house. I hope you’ll come for a visit.

If you are a small family of two or three looking for a quiet and beautiful place in which to spend a vacation, please consider this unit being offered. Located in Mid-Coast Maine on the island of Islesboro, this waterfront property is on the east side of the island at a high elevation with a view from Castine, down Eggemoggin Reach to North Haven. A short walk down to a private, pebbly beach presents you to one of the most picturesque coves on the island. There is a small rowboat here for your pleasure. The apartment sits over a newly constructed 2-car garage, next door to the owner’s home on a very quiet 10 acre peninsula. A private entrance opens to the staircase leading up to the apartment. The entire building is winterized with comfortable in-floor heating. WI-FI from DSL is available. The one large bedroom has a double bed and a foldaway twin. A full bathroom has been designed with stylish fixtures. A hair dryer is provided. Full-size washer and dryer (for use of the renting family only, please) are in this room. Laundry soap and linens are provided. The kitchen is fully equipped, including new appliances—stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposer. Dishes, cookware, cutlery etc. are also provided. The living room faces east with a view of East Penobscot Bay. Islesboro is a beautiful 14-mile long island in the Penobscot Bay. A 3-mile ride on the State of Maine’s ferry MV Margaret Chase Smith (30 car, 220 passenger capacity) will transport you from Lincolnville Beach to Grindle Point on Islesboro. Folks appreciate the solitude and remoteness from the mainland which living on an island affords. Walking (the Islesboro Island Trust maintains several beautiful walking trails in various locations around the island), bicycling, beach combing, picnicking, swimming and kayaking are very popular activities. If one wants to venture further out about the island, during the summer months the Horse Barn up-island is home to the Pripet Riding Program. In Seal Harbor, mid-island, you’ll find Big Tree Boating’s sailing lessons in full swing (at a very reasonable cost). The town of Islesboro supports summer recreation activities—tennis courts, playground etc. which are located mid-island and the Town Beach (picnic and recreation area) is at the southern tip of the island. The Islesboro Farmers Market runs mid-June through late August. Also starting in June, the Islesboro Historical Society presents a full schedule of programs, art shows, arts and crafts etc. until the end of August. Open year-round is the Alice L. Pendleton Library, a public library (with renter memberships available), and Artisan Books and Bindery book store. A fitness center, internet café, youth and adult programs, and special events happen in the Islesboro Community Center. There are no malls on Islesboro but Dark Harbor is a busy village with shops and a big favorite—The Dark Harbor Shop (ice cream and “the best” sandwiches). If one needs to take a day for shopping, Camden (6 mi. south of Lincolnville Beach), Rockland (15 mi. south) and Belfast (12 mi. north of Lincolnville Beach) are easy destinations. There are two grocery/general stores on Islesboro but, as they are closed early evenings and Sundays, we encourage you to purchase food/staples on the mainland before your arrival to last you for a couple of days.

This beautiful A frame home sits on 2 1/2 acres in a private wooded area on Penobscot Bay. Its southern exposure allows maximum hours of sun and warmth as well as lovely sunsets to be enjoyed from the deck. The acrobatic flight of osprey and seagulls provide relaxing bird watching though the occasional appearance of a bald eagle may result in a noisier sight. Binoculars are handy for closer enjoyment and may allow you to see a seal enjoying dinner in the bay in the early evening. Descending a mere dozen steps brings you to a secluded beach for private sunbathing, swimming or strolling. A quiet peek at the beach in early morning may gift you with the joy of watching deer graze in the tall coastal grasses. Low tide offers the special treat of exploring Hutchins Island, a 30 acre sanctuary and beach just a 15 minute stroll from the house. Beaver live in the pond and osprey and heron in the wooded area buffeting the soft sand beach. Seals can be seen sunning themselves on the rocks to the north. Sprague Beach is another favorite just a short ride away. Beach picnics are wonderful. Islesboro is a 20 minute ferry ride from Lincolnville, a few miles north of Camden. It is an unspoiled, quiet place. The nearby towns on the mainland are some of the prettiest on the coast. The house has three bedrooms. Three double beds. There are 500 plus feet of private shore filled with fat mussels for picking at low tide. The island is low-key. We do have many activities on the island in the summer -- public beaches, nature walks and hiking trails, community center activities, opportunities for sailing lessons, etc. -- time spent here is largely about relaxing, ambling around, thinking about what to make for dinner, wandering to the shore and back, looking at the sky and water. It is also an ideal place to do concentrated artistic or creative work. “The island became a retreat for America’s elite in the early 1900’s. Back then it was industrialist Perry Coke Smith, actresses Christie Tiffany and Ruth Draper, Gibson Girl creator Charles Dana Gibson, and yacht designer Clinton Crane. Today it’s actors Kirstie Alley, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, Parker Stevenson (Hardy Boys), stockbroker and influential Republican contributor Richard Gilder, former presidential advisor Hodding Carter III and cell phone pioneer John McCaw Jr. (a former prep school classmate of Bill Gates — and occasional visits by Bill and Melinda).” Downeast Magazine, August 2006. Many people have told us that our home is one of the most charming on Islesboro. The house retains the character of the original summer house built in 1908, and it sits in a very special place - a narrow peninsula of land giving the house oceanfront at its front and back. A long porch at the front of the house is just 7 feet up and 12 feet back from high tide. And the shore is actually a sandy beach, something very rare along this stretch of the Maine coast. If you are a boater, there are moorings available just off shore. The front of the house faces Sabbathday Harbor & Ryder's Cove, around which cottages such as this one were built around 1900 by families coming down for the summer from Bangor on the steamboats that in those days made regular stops at Ryder's Cove. Further out on the narrow peninsula there is a rocky promontory from which still other ocean views can be had. The whole area has a magic that words cannot describe. The house sleeps 6-10 persons (best fit for ~4 adults/4 children or 6 adults). There are 3 bedrooms, 1 additional room, and 1 full bath on the second floor (queen-size bed in one bdrm, two single beds in another, queen size bed in another, and two twin beds in the other room). There is also an office on the first floor with a full size sleep sofa. And there is a half bath on the first floor. The first floor has a large open area for living and dining, an enclosed sun porch, and a kitchen. There are many window on the first floor, particularly on the glassed-in sun porch, which has an especially light and airy feel to it. The furnishings are in keeping with the age of the home. The house was built in 1907/1908. One hundred years later, over the winters of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, major restoration/repair of the house was completed including installation of foundation piers, restoration of south side porch, interior structural improvements (e.g., stiffening of second floor), removal of modern sheet rock in one bedroom, changes to second floor windows to make them impervious to weather, new hardwood floors, new roof and some new siding shingles, restoration of inoperable doors and windows, removal of thick/peeling old paint on trim and repainting. More recently, in 2011, additional restoration and improvements were made, including installation of foundation piers and new floor for the sun porch; lengthening of kitchen counter with new dishwasher; and construction of a new shed for garden tools All of the work was done with a careful eye to maintaining or restoring the original character of the house. Available for Rental: Memorial Day - Columbus Day; Weekly rentals (7 night minimum); Sunday - Sunday.

The Red House was farmhouse for a working farm from the late 1800s until the mid 1900s. Miss Grace, the daughter of the founder of WR Grace- a specialty building supply company- bought the 100 acre point of land where the Red House now is. Miss Grace built a large summer house on the point and a red farm house at the beginning of the peninsula to supply her and those who worked for her their food and flowers. The Red House barn used to house the beef and milk cows, the sheep, and the hay and corn silage for the animals. The chicken coop was (and still is) behind the farm house. The vegetable garden was (and still is) in front of the farmhouse. The farm supplied Miss Grace, her house and garden “help” and the crew of her 100-foot yacht with fresh milk, butter, eggs and vegetables daily and freshly-butchered chickens 2 or 3 times a week . The Red House Barn was made into the beautiful apartment that it is now in 1984. It looks out over the field that used to pasture the animals to Seal Cove where Big Tree Beach and Boating offers any age sailing and navigation instruction and a wonderful beach for swimming. The Bonnie Lynn, a 50-foot schooner, with her captains- Earl and Bonnie- is available for charter there. Behind the Red House there is a short walking trail to the shore which faces west- an ideal spot for picnics and sunset-watching. This is a idyllic serene spot, a bird-watcher and nature-lovers paradise. There are also opportunities to sail, hike, play tennis, eat ice cream, and explore the island culture and beauties.
