The perfect place from which to explore the wonders of Southern Oregon and the Rogue Valley. Homestead Woodland Cottage is a spacious, modern bungalow nestled on 60-acres of private property in the Griffin Creek area between Medford and Jacksonville. It’s at the end of a country road (now paved), with property borders on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) watershed land, so the surrounding trees are old and tall. It feels and sounds like you are far from the bustle of civilization, yet driving 10 minutes northeast takes you into downtown Medford, 10 minutes northwest and you arrive in the charming historical gold rush town of Jacksonville, or 20 minutes south you find yourself in Ashland’s downtown plaza and the bricks in front of Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Angus Bowmer Theater. Homestead Woodland Cottage is spacious and modern, built in 2000 and lived in on and off for 6 years until we built our home, which is next to the cottage (see photos). The kitchen is large and well-appointed with a gas stove and oven, microwave, toaster and a good selection of pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery. The fridge is small, but a reasonable size for a small family on vacation and we have a portable electric fridge you can use if you need more cold space. The living room is large and open, the walls lined with books. You’ll be comfortable sitting upon the IKEA queen sofabed (it becomes the 2nd queen bed for sleeping upon) and several arm-chairs. The room has a desk with PC, a free-standing fireplace, and a lovely round kitchen table with chairs. There is also 42” plasma screen TV offers cable, HBO, Showtime, and a selection of DVDs. Expect good wi-fi for all your computer connections. Expect also that you are so remote your cell phone won’t work inside (there’s a cell phone “sweet spot” in front of the cottage, though). The bedroom at Homestead Woodland Cottage is larger than a single car garage, with a new carpet and a new queen bed (guests report that it’s very comfortable). There’s a beautiful antique wardrobe and dresser for your clothes storage and Candace’s great-grandmother’s living room chairs to sit upon. Homestead Woodland Cottage’s bathroom has a deep stainless steel sink and plenty of hooks for towels. The large, custom, cultured marble shower features a bench and a pair of shower faucets so you can shower together with a friend or lover. Homestead Woodland Cottage has great versatility of sleeping options, so it’s terrific for a family get-away adventure. There’s a comfortable queen bed in the bedroom. There’s a comfortable convertible futon sofabed in the living room. We have two large, comfortable cots as extra beds. And the land offers several lovely, level spaces for tent camping. Homestead Cottage is about 1000 feet higher elevation that the floor of the Rogue Valley, so in summer it’s about 10 degrees cooler. The cottage is well insulated, and even on the hottest days (100+), the air temperature inside never rises about 79. In the winter, there’s a gas wall furnace to take the edge off and a free-standing fireplace that heats the interior so well that when there’s snow on the ground (which happens a couple times a year at our 2300 foot elevation) we often have to crack the windows to cool us down. You can expect a peaceful experience when you stay at Homestead Woodland Cottage. The nearest neighbor is more than 0.3 miles distant. A car might pass along the nearby easement road once every day or two (going to or from home). You’ll not listen to cars at night, but instead enjoy the cackle of hens and the occasional rooster crow, buzzing bees from our four hives, our two old, friendly dogs barking at pesky squirrels, a nearby family of night owls hooting, or the gaggle of wild turkey as they cross the front yard. You are welcome to bring your dog when you vacation with us. Our flock of chicken wanders freely, so we ask you keep an eye on your pets – sometimes they chase chickens and that doesn’t work for us. But we love canine visitors. You can hang in a hammock, swing in our sky chair, find plenty of shady spots to read a book or just be with the natural world, and generally enjoy peace and quiet between expeditions into the Rogue Valley. See plays, dine or shop in Ashland; wander historic Jacksonville; go wine-tasting in the Applegate Valley; play or raft in the Rogue River; ski Mt. Ashland in the winter or hike Crater Lake in the summer. All the wonders of Southern Oregon are near to your vacation pleasure spot, Homestead Woodland Cottage. Homestead Woodland Cottage is nestled on 60-acres of forested land at the bottom of the Applegate Watershed, in the Griffen Creek Area between Medford and Jacksonville. The place feels like it's a millions miles from anywhere (there is no traffic or people noise) yet in fewer than 10-minutes driving you can be in downtown in either city, and 20-minutes will take you into Ashland. We're in a valley so the sun rises late and sets early, making warm, welcoming, long evenings. We're surrounded by pine, fir, cedar, and madrone, yet there's patches of sunlight - in the meadows, over the pond at certain times of day, throughout the large vegetable garden. This is a perfect place to unwind from city-stress.

The SpaceThe weather in Southern Oregon is constantly changing. We have four true seasons and any one of them is a great time to visit. Casa de Los Arboles is a beautifully decorated home located 1.5 miles outside the Jacksonville City limits. The house sits on 2.5 acres of land above the highway nestled and secluded among the trees, providing a sense of escape from city life. There are numerous windows that allow one to enjoy the outdoors without having to go outside. Our home is adorned with wonderful art from around the world. The house has an upper and lower level. We reside on the upper level in the Master bedroom suite. The remainder of the upper level has an open and airy architecture and includes the kitchen, formal dining and living rooms, another guest bathroom, laundry room and formal study. All common areas are available to guests. The lower level offers renters a choice of two bedrooms, a private full bathroom, spacious family room and a media room with large flat screen TV to watch movies or your favorite television programs. From the family room you can access the backyard and an additional covered area, with outdoor furniture for sitting and enjoying the evening stars with a glass of wine from one of the many local wineries. (view NY Times article--Travel section 7/3/2014) There’s a trail directly in front of the house that connects with the additional Jacksonville trails in the adjacent hills. This allow access for traffic free walking, biking or jogging. The city of Jacksonville also serves as the gateway to the Applegate Valley with premiere wineries as close as 10 minutes away. Downtown Jacksonville bustles with activity every week-end and on dates when the Britt Ampitheatre is hosting a musical event. There are fine restaurants, clothing stores, novelty shops, coffee houses, museums, and wine tasting venues. A free trolley and Segways for rent allow for transportation within town, but leisurely strolling within the business district is a must. Ashland and its Oregon Shakespeare Festival is ~ 25 minutes away by car, and also offers a plethera of entertainment, dining and shopping options for visitors. We are happy to offer our personal favorites for your consideration. You will need a car to get aound the area. We have a beautiful German Shepherd, Albert, that we rescued in December 2010. He's a wonderful dog that relishes being the center of our attention. He's quite large but absolutely harmless. If you are interested in renting a room(s) please provide us with as much information about yourself as possible. The house and grounds are non-smoking areas. Guest AccessGuests have access to entire downstairs area, including outside patio. Private refrigerator in adjacent garage. Kitchen available for use as is dining room. The SpaceOur Homestead Woodland Cottage is the perfect place from which to explore the wonders of Southern Oregon and the Rogue Valley. Also a dreamy private meditation retreat space. Bring your entire family, and your dogs, come alone or with a romantic companion, and enjoy a vacation in nature with all the modern conveniences. The building is 1100sqft of comfort. The living room at Homestead Cottage is large and open, the walls lined with books. You’ll be comfortable sitting upon one of the IKEA queen sofabeds (they become queen beds for sleeping upon) and several arm-chairs. The living room has a desk with PC, a free-standing fireplace, and a lovely round kitchen table with chairs. There is also 42” plasma screen TV with cable, HBO, Showtime, and a selection of DVDs. The kitchen in the Cottage is large and well-appointed with a gas stove and oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and a good selection of pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery. The fridge is small, but a reasonable size for a family on vacation. The private bedroom has a new queen bed, a wardrobe and dresser, and a small washer & dryer. Homestead Woodland Cottage was the first building on this land since 1919, when RG's father moved with his parents and siblings into downtown Medford. We built the cottage in 2000 and lived in on and off for 6 years while we cruised the Pacific Ocean in our 35-foot sailboat. When it came time to settle down permanently, we built a two-story house, which is next to the cottage (see photos). Homestead Woodland Cottage is a spacious, modern bungalow nestled on 60-acres of "Woodland Reserve" private property in the Griffin Creek area between Medford. Ashland and Jacksonville. It’s at the end of a country road (now paved), with property borders on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) watershed land, so the surrounding trees are old and tall. It feels and sounds like you are far from the bustle of civilization, yet driving 10 minutes northeast takes you into downtown Medford, 8 minutes northwest and you arrive in the charming historical gold rush town of Jacksonville, or 23 minutes south you find yourself in Ashland’s downtown plaza and the bricks in front of Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Angus Bowmer Theater. Expect good wi-fi for all your computer connections. Expect also that you are so remote your cell phone won’t work inside (there’s a cell phone “sweet spot” in front of the cottage, though). There’s a beautiful antique wardrobe and dresser for your clothes storage and Candace’s Grandmother Bee’s living room chairs to sit upon. Homestead Woodland Cottage’s bathroom has a deep stainless steel sink and plenty of hooks for towels, which are plentiful. There’s a pair of comfortable convertible futon sofabeds in the living room. We also have two large, comfortable cots as extra beds. And the land offers several lovely, level spaces for tent camping or an extra RV to park. We'll supply you with all the firewood you need. Please note that we charge $25 when you bring your dog(s) and we will add this to your reservation after it is accepted. You can hang in a hammock, swing in our sky chair, find plenty of shady spots to read a book or just be with the natural world, dine at our shady picnic table after using the bar-b-que, hike some of our hilly woodland trails, and generally enjoy peace and quiet between expeditions into the Rogue Valley. Interaction with GuestsWe're available anytime you wish to interact with us or enjoy complete privacy; it's your choice. RG and Candace live in the two story house next to the cottage (see photos). RG is often to be seen on his tractor or riding his Gator around. We have 60-acres which include a large garden and some livestock (chickens and bees). We have 3 friendly dogs (Hermes, Ku'a, & Ruby Tuesday). Candace comes and goes, tending to both the Homestead and Chakra Garden of Ashland. Both of us are naturally friendly and we'll interact with you as much or as little as you prefer. This land has been in RG's family since 1887, and he was raised a couple of miles away, so he knows a lot about the area. We welcome families with children and pets, and single people or couples wanting a quiet retreat experience. The NeighborhoodHomestead Woodland Cottage is on 60-acres of designated "Woodland Reserve." We're at the end of a (paved) country road that, because of the lay-of-the-land, feels very remote but is actually quite close to Medford and Jacksonville. We are at the very beginning of the foothills that lead to the Applegate watershed, and two of our property borders are on BLM land. You can walk up our back hill (or have RG give you a ride in his Gator) and hike for some miles on BLM equestrian trails. But every part of the Rogue Valley, and all of Southern Oregon, is easily accessible by car from Homestead Woodland Cottage.
