The SpaceThis is one of the last remaining turn of the century cottages that still stands in the Newport/Jamestown area. Its in its original form since it was built by Admiral Richard Wainwright in 1898, and maintained and enjoyed by his family since. There are pictures of every generation sitting on the same porch in some of the same chairs, enjoying the same spectacular view of the bay. The cottage is rustic yet stately. If you want modern conveniences or if you prefer Ralph Lauren furnishings with flat screen tvs this cottage is not for you. If you want to be transported back to a simpler time when lace curtains and card games were the standard this is it. The cozy quarters and sense of shared adventure right at the edge of the bay was by design from a man who spent most of his life at sea. Enjoy. Guest AccessGuests will have full run of the this historic waterfront two story cottage. Includes two sea kayaks that can launch from right in front of the house. The NeighborhoodJamestown island had been Rhode Island's best kept secret for nearly a hundred years. In the past 15 years it has been "discovered" by wealthy families who are building lavish homes. Even still, it is a bucolic island with rolling hills, cow pastures, bird sanctuaries that is similar to Martha's Vinyard. It still maintains a relaxing small town flavor in contrast to the bustle and crowds of Newport across the bridge. The Admiral's cottage is on the east shore and comfortably secluded away from the downtown area. Getting AroundYou can kayak to town but a car might be best for getting groceries. Other Things to NoteThis is a waterfront cottage with a porch overlooking Narragansett Bay.

The SpaceThe rustic cabin is located in Idyllic Jamestown, Rhode Island, a little Island off the coast, near Newport (think Folk Festival, Jazz Fest, and Sailing) and 45 minutes from Providence. This small cabin comes with a sitting area, queen size bed, small loft with twin size bed (not suitable for very small children), mini fridge, microwave, outdoor shower & sink, and back deck with cozy couch, Adirondack chairs and fire pit. Toilet is located in neighboring glassblowing studio - a short walk away. Use of the Tipi for meditation may be available, inquire when making reservation about availability. ( As of May 2016 Tipi is having repairs done - may or may not make it back up for the summer season ) Guest AccessGuests will have access to a toilet within the glass studio (about a 30 second walk from the cabin past our gardens and woods- there is NO toilet in or directly next to the cabin itself) and free parking in the glass studio driveway. Downtown Jamestown is a small quaint village just moments away by bike or car and offers restaurants, shops, grocery store, laundromat, liquor stores, gas stations, bakery, cafes, marina, and a ferry to Newport. Also on the Island are State Parks, Beaches, and several Historic Farms. Within a short drive are Newport, Narragansett, and Wickford, offering a variety of farmers markets and art fairs throughout the season. Interaction with GuestsGuests will have access to David and Jennifer's glassblowing studio either for shopping, to watch a glassblowing demo or to take part in a fun glassblowing experience themselves. A variety of lessons are available upon request. Please make arrangements for lessons and find out availability before your arrival. (lessons are usually not available on the weekend) We will be present on the property in neighboring main house during your stay to answer questions about the surrounding area and introduce you to the workings of the cabin. The NeighborhoodCabin is surrounded by beautiful working farms and the Historic Jamestown Windmill and the Clancy's glassblowing studio. The Windmill is open to the public for interior tours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1-4 during the summer months. Fresh produce and grass-fed organic meat and eggs can be purchased from neighboring farms as well as spun wool and wool blankets. Walking Historic Watson Farm makes for a lovely afternoon. Jamestown itself is a perfect Island for running, biking and kayaking. Mackerel Cove is a family friendly beach great for swimming and sunbathing. Beavertail Park is a coastal state park which is perfect for picnics, kite flying, and hiking. It also features a Historic Lighthouse. Downtown Jamestown offers fine dining and outdoor cafes. 2016 article that might help fill in the details about Jamestown - (URL HIDDEN) Getting AroundHaving a car is best, but if you don't, we can pick you up at the Providence Airport or one of the many local train stations for a reasonable fee. There is also a ferry located in downtown Jamestown for day trips to Newport and a ferry in Galilee for trips to Block Island. Other Things to NotePlease note: the cabin will be unavailable for rental from Mid-October to end-May. There is a small space heater for the cooler evenings and a fan for the warmer weather- no AC. There is room for a fourth person to sleep on the floor - guests will have to supply their own air mattress and bedding or sleeping bag for this option - there is an extra fee of $20 for the fourth guest. It should be noted that the neighboring glass studio and windmill do get visitors and we have a small child and dog that will be playing on the main house grounds. We have been told by friends and guests how special the cabin is, that the views are amazing, and that they've had the best nights sleep there ever. The peaceful views over the fields, the sound of the tree frogs at night, the sunrises and moonscapes over the hill all provide one with a sense of "getting away from it all". - Review of Cabin from Janie (previous guest) : "Ahhhh…. The Love Shack! ! My one-week visit was sublime! ! ! Each evening I savored the serenity of the view eastward across the pasture as I sat on the wooden bench, cozy by the fire pit. The full moon rose from behind the majestic Newport Bridge and over the East Passage… its reflection rippling across the water… Late in the night, the moon returned to awaken me as it cast shadows on the historic windmill just steps away, on the other side of the stone wall. Pure magic!!! The dawn brought dew on the hydrangea and blueberries ripe for the picking just outside my door. The gardens, overflowing with colorful flowers and ripening vegetables beckoned in the summer sun. My visit to the glass studio, filled with artful swirling colors, glass fish and fruit…goblets and sconces … pitchers and ornaments … astounded and delighted me! So enchanting! So many shapes and colors and moods. So much joy!!! It is a truly is a magical spot… ideal for writers, photographers, thinkers, dreamers … poets…. bring your guitar!

This classic mid-century coastal cottage on Beavertail in Narragansett Bay is a traditional beach vacation home. The water is approximately 250 feet from the front door, down a set of private stairs with deeded right of way. There are flat rocks for sunbathing or fishing, good snorkeling and a very nice cove, Hull Cove, with a beach just five minutes walking to the left along the water's edge. The town beach is approximately 10 minutes by car. The town center of Jamestown is a few minutes further, with cafes, shops and a marina. By car, you can cross the bridge to Newport in approximately 15 minutes. Next door property is also available for family reunions. House features oak and cherry floors and a traditional beach cottage character. Historical Information: This neighborhood was originally developed for and by fishing enthusiasts prior to the 1950's. Many of the houses subsequently incorporated the original fishing houses into their more modern renovation. This house was renovated in the 1950's by the then retiring owner. He and his wife built a large kitchen, a bath and two bedrooms onto the original fishing structure, and added central heating, making it one of the first year-round houses in the neighborhood. One can identify the original structure by the flooring: cherry wood was used to floor the original, with pine paneling on the walls. The remainder of the house was floored with oak, but again using pine paneling on the walls. While there has been some thoughtful updating, the feeling of the cottage is very true to its time, and so has a very strong feeling of nostalgia! If you enjoy excitement and action, but would like a quiet retreat at the end of the day, or prefer being away from the excitement all day long, this is the place for you. This location is exceptional for its proximity to the water and its convenient access to cultural and tourist attractions in downtown Jamestown, and Newport, while keeping the hubbub at arm's length. Enjoy gorgeous views and private access to the ocean with a location and accommodations that pays homage to a simpler time. Other Activities: bird watching, beach combing, kayaking, biking, golf, people watching, boat watching, This house is available Saturday to Saturday except by special arrangement Flat shale rocks at the base of our neighborhood stairs are great for sunbathing, launching a kayak and fishing. Or launch yourself for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, or, for the stout of heart, surfing across our cove at Short Point. Heading out the front door in the opposite direction, bike the island, walk to Beavertail lighthouse, or just watch the birds, of which there is an abundance. Beachcomb Hull Cove, or head south toward Beavertail along the water's edge. This walk becomes quite dramatic and will require retracing your steps before long. historical information: This neighborhood was originally developed for and by fishing enthusiasts prior to the 1950's. Closer to the turn of this century, some of the older cottages were rebuilt into beautiful contemporary/traditional year round homes, or building lots were developed similarly. There are, however, still some of the traditional cottages, of which this is one. For a busy resort feeling, venture "downtown" for several upscale restaurants, a couple of excellent bakeries. Visit the harbor or walk along the Bay's edge. To ramp up the vacation feeling, venture to Newport via car, or choose the Jamestown/Newport Ferry. At the end of your evening, retreat to the relative tranquility of Beavertail.
