Here entrepreneurs led by Josiah White formed the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company in the 1820s and shipped countless tons of anthracite coal and other goods to market via the Lehigh and Delaware Canals. The town grew in importance when it was named Carbon County’s seat in 1843. Its steep hillsides, narrow streets, and terraced gardens earned the town its nickname “The Switzerland of America.” The beauty of this region has beckoned people for almost two centuries. Today, the restored Old Mauch Chunk Railroad Station serves at the hub of the town offering visitor services and train rides into Lehigh Gorge. The Mauch Chunk Opera House presents live theater and music. Visit the home of Asa Packer, founder of Lehigh University. Tour the Old Carbon County Jail, once occupied by the Molly Maguires - the alleged Irish mining organization seeking better working conditions.

All the attractions of the Pocono and Blue Mountains are an easy drive away. You can also leave your car parked in our private driveway and walk downtown to enjoy a wide variety of evening entertainment, restaurants, art galleries, museums and shopping. The Switchback Trail starts right behind the house, where you can walk or bike up to Mauch Chunk Lake or down to the many miles of extensive bike trails that parallel the old train tracks along the Lehigh River. ***Positively no parties or Prom groups*** Lazy bums and homebodies need not apply! Recently, Jim Thorpe has become a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Our home is centrally located to all of the major attractions to this town. In fact, the famous Switchback Trail is accessible right from the house! Whether you bike or hike the 18 mile trail, you will see all that this town has to offer. It's a local favorite as well. In addition, there is rafting, kayaking, paintball (skirmish), boating and fishing to name just a few. A lovely, and short walk away is the downtown area, also know as "Little Switzerland". We encourage you to dine at the restaurants and shop at the stores. If time allows, make sure to visit the Asa Packer and Harry Packer Mansions, tour the Old Jail Museum, or take a ride on the famous Lehigh Gorge Railway.

Fine restaurants, outdoor activities like swimming, biking, rafting, small unique shops, art galleries- Jim Thorpe has it all. This is a family friendly town with lots to do in the area. Only hours from Philadelphia and New York it is not difficult to get to. Close to lots of fun things to do in town.: This house is located right in Jim Thorpe on the main street, but with off-street parking so you don't have to worry about finding a spot for your car. Minutes from the varied restaurants of Jim Thorpe, you have a choice to cook your self in our full equipped kitchen or go out for a delicious dinner cooked by someone else. It is a 15 minute walk to the downtown shops and museums of Jim Thorpe. It may not be the most impressive house available but it is clean, comfortable and affordable for your group or family. And we live next door and will do our very best to make sure you have a good vacation here in our lovely town. Or get into the great outdoors.: Just 3 miles by car is Mauch Chunk Lake with swimming and a lovely beach, boating and fishing on the lake, and hiking around the lake. This lake is enjoyable in all seasons. Or jump on your bicycle and join up with the Switchback Trail just minutes from the property. Rafting is available down on the Lehigh River which runs right through the heart of Jim Thorpe. Or take a hike to Glen Onoko, a short drive from town and the property where you will stay. In winter we are just a short drive from 3 ski areas- Blue Mountain, Jack Frost, or Big Boulder. And if you want to see the lovely leaves in the fall they are all around in whatever direction you might turn. This house is great because you are still in town and can easily walk down to access all the great features of Jim Thorpe, but there are no houses behind it and only 1 across the street so it has the feel of being in the mountains. It is a 15 minute walk downtown or a 2 minute drive. The other direction it is only a 5 minute drive to Mauch Chunk Lake with swimming, hiking, and relaxing on the beach.

This cabin has been in the processes of being carefully created for 3 years, and we are proud to offer this beautiful -ready to rent- cabin to you for your enjoyment. Cabin #1 was designed and completely rebuilt by us, the owners! Come and enjoy experiencing nature first hand while being surrounded by endless acres of wilderness. The cabin borders a hemlock forest with the sight and sound of a rolling stream with small waterfalls and walking trails. As you drive towards the cabin, you will be welcomed by mountains, trees, fields, streams, deer, turkeys, and boundless views of nature that will make you feel like you are staying at a State Park. This entire cabin has log siding on the outside and Rough Cut Pine wood in the inside. The front porch has posts used from the trunks of hemlock trees found and picked from the property. The property is lined with paths made out of endless rows of fieldstone taken from the earth of the premises. Enjoy a campfire while you pick a seat or couch made out of stones that are so large that you can lie down and relax on them. As you enter this cabin that was originally build from the surrounding trees in the 1940s, you will be able to enjoy the woods and wilderness from the view of 12 large crank open windows. Have a seat at the kitchen breakfast nook, because you will have a great chance of seeing turkeys, which arrive daily and usually with their babies. In the woods, we placed a feeder filled with corn, so this enables you to watch the deer and of course the squirrels feed on the corn and entertain you. When nighttime arrives there is a spotlight out in the woods that shines down on the feeder. This spotlight gets turned on and off just by a switch inside the cabin. It is so exiting to watch the deer and the wildlife in their natural habitat at night! Loft Amenities The Loft at FLOW features a cast iron pellet/corn stove and off-street parking. The apartment also offers cable television, Wi-Fi access, DVDs and a CD player for relaxing indoors. Guests can cook on site in the fully-equipped kitchen and the outdoor dining patio at the base of the mountain. The restaurant in the building is currently open only for special events. Guest AccessThere is a large 60 x 40 ft room just outside of the loft that guests often enjoy, especially if they have children who will be stuck inside due to inclement weather. Also, in better weather, guests may enjoy relaxing in the gardens in back of the building. Additionally, we welcome guests to spend time in the gallery spaces on the first floor. Interaction with GuestsOur family lives directly across the street from the building, so it is convenient to meet guests to provide them with keys and instructions. The NeighborhoodOutdoor lovers can access an extensive trail system connecting a quarter-mile from the loft to enjoy bicycling, running, hiking, or cross-country skiing. The nearby Lehigh River also provides access for whitewater rafting, kayaking and fishing through a number of outfitters. Eclectic shops, museums and the Mauch Chunk Opera House are all within walking distance from the property. Other nearby activities include swimming, fishing and boating at the beautiful Mauch Chunk Lake Park. During the each season, visitors can enjoy a number of the annual festivals including the Fall Foliage Weekends, Jim Thorpe Birthday Celebration, Earth Day, Olde Time Christmas, Winterfest and the Burlesque Festival. Getting AroundWe're only about 3/4 mile up from the main light in town where many of the activities are held in Jim Thorpe during Fall Foliage and other times of the year. It is down a hill to get to the main part of town, fairly easy walking for most people, but some people may not be avid walkers (especially as there is a hill on the return). There is a bus to NYC/PHL that leaves once a day that is at the base of town, while it is not very convenient from a scheduling perspective, but it is possible to take the bus to Jim Thorpe.

The SpaceOur rental is not typical. We strive to provide everything you could possibly need during your stay. The only thing you need to bring are your personal toiletries, clothing and food. For your convenience, we provide all of the necessary kitchen items. You will find coffee filters, sugar, creamer, foil, plastic wrap, spices and condiments. There is a well-stocked linen closet full of items you may have forgotten. We have a gas/propane grill right off of the kitchen for 4-season grilling. The 4th bedroom/loft is perfect for the kids! Guest AccessYou will have access to the entire home. There is a nice private, fenced-in yard with a deck and covered porch for grilling in any weather. Interaction with GuestsI typically respond to all inquiries and issues within minutes from 7am-7pm. Upon booking, I will send specific instruction on how to get to the house and what to expect upon arrival. We live only minutes away, but will not come to the house during your stay unless there is a problem that we need to address. The NeighborhoodWe have a quiet neighborhood with very wonderful neighbors. As a long-time resident of the area, I have lots of recommendations for restaurants, shopping and activities during any time of year. Getting AroundWe recommend parking your car in our private lot and walking or riding your bike to all that Jim Thorpe has to offer. In less than desirable weather, we recommend driving downtown and parking in a public lot or space. Parking is free after 5:00 during the week. Other Things to NotePlease note that our check in is typically 4:00pm and check out is 11:00am. We can be flexible with those times as long as there aren't renters before and/or after your stay. I would also be happy to recommend things to do and places to visit while you stay at The Switchback House - please ask!!
