The SpaceCarrie’s Cottage Guest Suite Aloha and e komo mai! Clean, comfortable and spacious, our guest suite with loft is located in our main home in Kaloko on 1.5 acres on the slopes of Hualalai. At the base of an Ohia Forest, this is one of Kona’s most desirable and scenic areas. Peaceful, quiet and situated at 1700 foot elevation, this location brings cool evenings and days. Our property is surrounded by kukui, ohia, silver oak, and fruit trees. The Guest Suite has two private entrances and a large private bathroom. The bedroom is furnished with a Queen bed, built in desk, sitting area, flat screen TV and wireless internet access. There is also an outdoor bistro set, small fridge, microwave and coffee maker. We are located 10 minutes from Keahole International Airport, minutes from Costco and the heart and heat of Kailua-Kona. Very close by are several beautiful hiking trails as well as Makalei Golf Course. Kaloko is also centrally located to many of the beautiful beaches along the coastline, 40 minutes from Waimea town and 55 minutes from the base of the world famous Mauna Kea, home of Keck Observatory. We offer the opportunity to stay in one of the “Big Islands” special areas that we call home. We have two small dogs, two cats, and a small flock of chickens, (No Roosters). While we are happy to share this experience, please be aware that this is our home and not a 5 star resort. There is a 3 night minimum. Rates vary depending on the time of year. Please check the calendar for rates specific to your travel dates. State of Hawaii Accommodations Tax of 13.42% is not included in the published total and is due upon arrival. The SpaceThe house is grand but welcoming, and what a VIEW! There are many different spaces for relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet. A large group can spread out and not see much of each other or gather in the great room for a banquet or a polka! Included in the rental is the use of two beginner (foam) surfboards and a standup paddle board (SUP). Head down to the beginner break and catch some waves, or we can point you to where you can easily paddle out from shore and swim with dolphins in the wild! HIGHLIGHTS: 3 master bedroom suites, each with full bath 3600 sq ft of indoor space, 5 separate lanai (porches) provide 2000 sq ft of outdoor living space (most covered), real beds for 16 (plus up to 5 queen AeroBeds) 9 separate sleeping areas, two kitchens, full laundry facilities, wireless internet, hardwood floors, cathedral ceilings, ample parking, cool nights and warm days, closer to the best beaches than anything in Kona town, including top-rated Kua Bay, quiet, completely private 1.5 acre lot all to yourselves. free use of boogie boards, beach chairs, coolers, surfboards, snorkel gear, beach towels, sand toys, and a NEW STANDUP PADDLE BOARD! VIRTUAL TOUR: The folks who sold us this house produced a very nice virtual tour. The "pano" shots give you 360 degree views of most parts of the house. Of course, it shows the house with their furniture, but except for the studio (which they used as an office), we have made similar choices about furniture placement. MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE HOUSE Natural Air Conditioning: We are at a perfect 1600 ft (500m) elevation, with expansive ocean and coastline views. Folks who live 300 ft below us are in the lava desert where they need air conditioning many nights; homes 300 ft above us are in the cloud forest where you don't get direct sunlight some days. Here, the cool nights are a wonderful contrast to the warm sunny days. The temperature is just chilly enough most nights to want a light blanket, but warms into the 70’s by about 9am. Mosquitos are almost never a problem. If it has rained recently there will be some mosquitos in the back garden at dusk; but we eat dinner nearly every evening on the front lanai, which is 20 ft off the ground, without any problems. The Grounds: Our house is situated well off the street at the end of a long driveway in a very private 1.5 acre lot filled with banana, papaya, macadamia nut, coffee and avocado trees. You are welcome to share in the bounty when the fruit (or the vegetables in our organic garden) are in season. Unlike many farm-like settings in Hawaii, we have no roosters to disturb your sleep. There is a gas grill on the back lanai which you are welcome to use, and a gas fire pit to roast Smores or warm yourself on cool evenings. Also in the back of the house, surrounded by a trellis and lush greenery for privacy, is our out-door shower with hot water! This is a wonderful first stop when you return home from the beach. Central Location: We are just 8 minutes to Kona town with its restaurants and nightlife, and 5 minutes from Costco, directly above some of the best coastline on the island: Honokohau Harbor and National Park, and the Pine Trees surf break. The airport is 12 minutes. BEACHES: Kua Bay, recently voted the best beach on the Big Island and sporting the best boogie boarding, body surfing, and frolicking is just 15 minutes away. Our location gives us traffic-free access to all the kick’n Kohala beaches (Kua, Kukio, Beach 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea) as well as Waimea, which is just 35 minutes. The Waipio Valley overlook is 75 minutes. Hilo is just over an hour via the recently completed Saddle Road Hwy. Captain Cook and points south (Green Sand Beach, Southpoint, and Volcano) can be accessed, avoiding the Kona traffic, via the quaint artist town of Holualoa, and the picturesque Mamalahola Highway. Beds: Master: king BR#2: queen, 2 twins (bunk beds) plus twin the loft BR#3: king plus a queen in the loft Studio Mainspace: Cal king, twin Studio Alcove: Queen and full size crib Plus up to 5 Queen AeroBeds (These are very comfortable, bed height with headboard, and can be placed in any room). Bedroom Descriptions: The Master Suite is nearly 500 sq ft and boasts panoramic ocean views, stained glass windows, cathedral ceilings, and a jetted tub surrounded by screened windows, creating the feeling of taking a bath in the forest canopy. Bedroom Suites #2 and #3 are each the size of an ordinary master bedroom with en suite full bath with tub, 18 ft ceilings and a loft. The mauka (mountain side) suite (#2) has French doors opening onto the garden and is outfitted with a twin in the loft, twin bunk beds, and a queen bed. It is a mirror image of the makai (ocean side) suite except the latter has a king size bed, a queen in the loft and its own private balcony with ocean views. Downstairs is a 1000 sq foot studio apartment. The main space is outfitted with a California king bed and twin bed, a pool and ping pong table, and a kitchen with a full size fridge. An alcove off the studio (separated by a heavy curtain) has a queen bed and a full size crib, and its own entrance to a bathroom (shared with the studio main space). There is an adjacent covered sleeping porch where one or more AeroBeds can be set up. We also have a full size cot and pac'n play, available upon request which can be placed in any room. Even the studio has ocean views from its picture window and two large lanais. With its own entrance and a door directly into the main house, the studio is a perfect space for the in-laws or a second family that is part of your group. Food Preparation: The primary kitchen is well stocked, has space for several people to work together, and is integrated into the Great Room. It has three sinks, over 8 square meters of granite counter space, cutting boards, dishwasher and other stainless steel appliances, a Vitamix blender, and everything else a foodie needs to grill, bake, or wok delicious meals. (There is also a kitchen with a full size fridge in the studio.) In the back of the house is a lanai with a gas grill. This lanai is also our favorite place to breakfast since it catches the morning rays. Jurassic Park: If you get hot and want a change from the beach, go two miles straight up our street (Kaloko Drive) into the Cloud Forest. There you will find some of the best hiking trails on the island, including one which was used for scenes in the movie Jurassic Park. The House Manual includes detailed instructions on how to find our favorite hikes, most of which you will not find in any guidebook! Equipment: Beach and bath towels, all linens, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner, boogie boards, surf boards, beach chairs, and coolers are available for use free of charge. Surfers, paddle surfers, bikers (road or mountain): inquire with us about renting our bikes or boards. We can also arrange a surfing lesson for beginners or experts (with a top professional), or just point you to where the waves are breaking. Adventure: There is no place on earth like the Big Island of Hawaii, and we chose this house because it is the perfect base for exploring it. You are welcome to borrow from our library of guide books, and we are happy to share our recommendations for the best beaches and hikes, the best places to snorkel with dolphins in the wild, where to eat and shop in Kona, and other little known secrets. From here you can day trip to other parts of the (URL HIDDEN) the wild coast near Hawi, the rugged jungle and spectacular waterfalls of the Hamuka coast and Waipio Valley, and, of course, the unparalleled Volcanoes National Park. We can also recommend the best places to eat out or where to buy when eating in. (The very freshest food can be picked right from the garden, and you are encouraged to enjoy whatever is in season.) The NeighborhoodThe Big Island is a BIG place. We chose this house partly because of it's perfect central location. At 1600 ft above sea level, we have the perfect climate: cool nights and warm days, and easy, traffic-free access to the beaches. We are one of the closest upscale neighborhoods to Kua Bay (15 minutes)--recently rated the top beach on the Big Island and one of the top ten beaches in the USA! We are close to everything: airport (12 minutes), Kona (8 minutes), Costco (5 minutes) and the recently opened Saddle Road Hwy gets you from our house to the Hilo (wet) side in just over an hour. Getting AroundPublic transportation on the big island is very poor. A rental car is a must no matter where you are staying. Other Things to NoteThis is a good choice for a group who values privacy (this is a VERY private lot), likes to prepare and eat food together (with a cooks kitchen and a huge deck with a killer view), and prefers healthy cool mountain air at night (not refrigerated air from an air conditioner). The SpaceKona Cottage is a darling separate small cottage located right above Kona in a very tropical quiet setting. This tranquil hideaway is located on half an acre in an upscale neighborhood with fruit trees, papayas, bananas and array of blooming orchids and flowers right out your cottage door! The cottage is tastefully decorated in a tropical style with an amazingly comfortable queen bed, nice sized bathroom with shower and tub, flat screen tv, small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and some sampling of Hawaiian fruit. The cottage is stocked with all sorts of travel books on the Big Island, novels and tour brochures. There's a private, covered outside lanai with table, chairs and lounge chairs facing the koi pond to relax with coffee or enjoy an afternoon cocktail. The koi pond lulls you to sleep at night with the soothing sound of the waterfall. This place is very quiet and tucked away at a cool elevation for a reprieve of the hot Kona climate yet just 5-10 minutes to Kona town. Available to you are beach chairs, mats, cooler, snorkel gear and beach towels. Hosts on property can help with any information or questions as they are near by but just far enough away to enjoy your privacy. Come visit our tropical hideaway! Host is a licensed realtor. Many of the wonderful beaches of the big island are nearby. One of the top beaches in the world located just 10 minutes away - we love to visit Kua Bay! Getting AroundYou will need to rent a car. This island is indeed BIG and we don't have a suitable public transportation as everything is too spread out. WE RENT OUR CARS out if you are interested when booking we can do a complete package and pick you up from the airport too. We have Mercedes c300 and a Mazda Miata. Just mention it in your request. Other Things to NoteWe have snorkel gear, ice chest, boogie boards, beach chairs, many beach towels.... and more for you to enjoy for free here on your hawaii vacation!

The SpaceThis is a non-smoking, pretty healthy household, carved out during my 25 years on the Big Island. Little meat other than fish cooked here….but you may if you are of that bent. After all, you’ll be doing your own cooking of your own food in your own efficiency kitchen in your own studio…with your own view from a small lanai! On the side of my house that's opposite the guest ohana, house construction is happening....the grand symphony of saws and pounding usually begins around 7 a.m….til 3:30 or 4 p.m; once in a great while Saturdays are included. So it’s loosely-designated as quiet time around here from about 10 p.m. until 6:45 a.m. If you come in late, you might need to sleep like a rock! But most noise is far enough from my place that guests tell me they barely noticed. Being situated at the bottom of a former cul-de-sac, now a "loop", there is ample on street parking...historically safe. Guest AccessSnorkel gear is available, if it fits you. Two beach chairs, a beach bag, cooler, thermal sandwich keeper, and water jug are yours to use. Plus oodles of sunscreen that guests leave. There are a few boogie boards...some have seen better days in smaller waves. Plenty of towels that have had many trips to the beach can be used on your own excursions. You have access to the laundry room; sun dry (no dryer). Interaction with GuestsIf you'd like to join me on my lanai in the evening to talk story (over a beverage?), that might be possible...if I am not out playing! If you want to go out to play together at the beach or some other place, ok....if I'm available. Or if you want to remain autonomous, that's cool, too. I can answer questions about the island and point you here and there...or somewhere else! You get to witness the fraidy-cat scamper away while the other one awaits pets...or not. Maybe you'll even glimpse the neutered hobo alley cat who has remained aloof at best since his malehood was robbed....but his stomach remembers where the food dish is located. The NeighborhoodQuiet neighborhood at 1150' elevation where the cooler air is our friend at night. Getting AroundRental car recommended...unless you are an avid bicyclist. Avid. Really avid. Open 3:00-8:40 Otherwise Kailua Kona town is just 20 minutes down the road Getting AroundYou really need your own car to get around as the public transportation is limited to a bus service that goes around the island. Remove all dirty laundry, sheets and towels, kitchen cloths, to the laundry room. If you did not use some of the pillows or towels, a note letting us know would be appreciated so we don't wash them unnecessarily. PLEASE TURN OFF ALL FANS AND LIGHTS BEFORE LEAVING. Otherwise you have your own entrance and more privacy than a Hotel would provide. Once you are in your suite it's your domain..I never bother you, but will always be available if need be. The NeighborhoodThe surf shack in in a family oriented neighborhood.. you will hear birds sing,the occasional dog and a rooster in the distance... like blocks away! The morning tour of turkeys strolling along the street usually catches our guests (URL HIDDEN) a novelty! My hens are quiet until they lay and that's generally while you're at the beach. There are families with children you will hear them playing as kids do from time to time. This is a typical Hawaiian neighborhood. We are at a cooler elevation which is nice to back to after a day in the hot tropical sun. Getting AroundYou need a car on this island unless you are looking for a self contained resort (which we are not)... you will always be driving somewhere. The SpaceThe house is centrally located, nice and accessible good roads, lustrous tropical views, and to top it all the sunset and blue ocean. The elevation is excellent without worrying about heat, noise and particularly mold from higher elevation! There is a nearby service station and food mart walking distance particularly use by local people on laid back mode or just for necessities. Just the right temperature all year long! 10 minutes drive to the most beautiful beaches on the island, dining and shopping in Kona town, Costco and less than 10 minutes to catch your ight home. The cheerful bedroom has a comfy Queen Size bed, dresser, end-tables with reading lamps and extra chairs plus a flat screen TV with cable. Large closet contains kids toys and a twin mattress for the floor if you have a fourth person (but it will be a bit cramped). Enjoy the free WiFi or unplug – your choice! The SpaceLarge ocean view home private suite with own entrance above the airport, pool & hot tub. The location is perfect, close access to airport, beaches and popular sites while escaping touristville of downtown Kona (7 mil away). We aren't just saying this because it's our home but if we were visiting the Big Island the location and amenities of our home would be exactly what we would look for, there is just everything you need and more plus a wonderful location. You won't be disappointed. The reason we have opened up our house to guest is we believe if we were traveling somewhere our house would be a great fit and a place we would want to stay. Amenities of a resort: hot tub, pool, private cabana, bbq, gourmet kitchen while having the privacy of your own room and entrance without the craziness of hundreds of families around you and packed restaurants. The location of our home is great because often times people want to stay in "downtown Kona" but you will find that actually you won't spend much time there, it's cute and fun to see and only 7 miles away but it's one of the many places to see on the Big Island. Seven miles to downtown Kona is a quick drive, but even better we are closer to all the beaches. In fact some of the worlds best are located less than 10 minutes from the house. A lot of visiting on Big Island consist of traveling all over the island. Our location is key to that option, very close to beach access points, as well as the main roads that get you to and around the amazing Big Island. You will have your own 32" TV in your bedroom with cable options, free wifi, private bathroom and ocean view, sitting area, coffee pot, and clothes storage as well as access to gourmet kitchen, bbq, private pool and hot tub. We have found that our guest like to go to Costco which is very close to the house to stock up on snacks and food to prep for meals. We leave the amount of interaction up to our guest. We are happy to chat and discuss options around the island, or to give them own private space and let them do their own thing. We have ended up with some of our guest doing a BBQ and Cocktails by pool and hot tub into the late night with some great music playing. While some check-in and do their own thing their entire trip. Either is fine with us. We want our guest to feel comfortable and do our best to give them what they desire. This neighborhood has great ocean views, large home with great private layout. Our guest will often go for walks around neighborhood just soaking in the great views. The Big Island is huge really there is no other option than to Rent a Car on this island, because it is the only real option sometimes the island books up with cars, we do have extra car so if we need to we can discuss option to rent out a vehicle with your stay. Guest AccessYou will have full access to the amazing backyard with pool, hot tub, bbq, inside wonderful kitchen with all the tools you need to make a wonderful dinner. We are totally okay with just being a place for you to crash or we love as well meeting wonderful people from all over the world and staying up at night having a glass of wine together. You are just 7 miles to "downtown kona" but better yet your are 3 miles from the airport, close to best food shopping resources, there is a local market 2 miles away and Costco is 3 miles away. All the wonderful beaches of the big island are nearby. One of the top beaches in the world located just 10 minutes away - we love to visit Kua Bay! Getting AroundYou will need to rent a car. This island is indeed BIG and we don't have a suitable public transportation as everything is too spread out. We do rent our cars out if you are interested when booking we can do a complete package and pick you up from the airport too. Just mention it in your request. Other Things to NoteGavin is the boss of the house :) he's the adorable chi-weenie! He is super friendly and has the true laid back aloha spirit. The dogs roam freely and love people...they're the welcome committee and are extremely lovable. *A car is required as there is no public transportation nearby and the apartment is located approximately 4 miles from the ocean, 3 miles from Kona, 5 miles from Holualoa. By car, everything you need is within a 5-10 minute drive. Hula Daddy Coffee Farm and tasting room is located within 1 mile. Holuakoa Gardens & Cafe is located within 5 miles. Holualoa is an area primarily known for Kona Coffee farms and is located on the slopes of Hualalai overlooking the Kona Coast.
