The SpaceThe cottage was built in the 1880's and still features the original coal and wood fired AGA (yes, you can use it) and it is just as cute as a button. Small but perfectly formed with a full kitchen that opens out to the perfect space for a morning cuppa and a dining space that can even fit friends.     The house is very comfortable and warm, normally used for our overseas guests, and sleeps 5. This property is set within the historic Truby King reserve, site of the old Seacliff asylum. It is an extraordinary woodland and it is locally known as "the enchanted forest". If you walk five minutes up the hill you get spectacular views of Otago peninsula and Karitane. It is five minutes drive to both Karitane and Warrington beaches, which are safe for swimming and surfing. At Karitane there is a fine walk round the peninsula and the cheese factory is nearby. The cottage has a double bed and bunks, and also a small single bed. The sleeping area is essentially one large bedroom, with an alcove where the bunkbeds are. (This means there are actually five beds available: a double bed, a single bed and two bunk beds.) There is also a cot in the bedroom. There is a woodburner in the living room, and firewood is supplied. It is an easy, scenic 25 minute drive to Dunedin. PLEASE NOTE: Though some maps and GPS systems show that the Seacliff end of Russell Road is accessible from Highway 1, it is not. When coming to our cottage, you must travel to Seacliff via Karitane or Warrington, and along Coast Road. Special conditions: Smoking allowed outside only. Bench provided! NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave; Bring your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels);

    Our historic crib at Karitane was one of the village?s original cottages, occupied by the boat builder for the Karitane fishing fleet. The property has recently been completely rebuilt and has now been furnished with comfort and style, featuring the owner?s lifelong collection of retro furniture and household effects. Summer guests can enjoy being a pleasant 5 minute walk from beautiful Karitane beach, renowned for great swimming and surfing, or amble across the road and put the canoe in the water then return to enjoy a BBQ on the deck and some back yard cricket on the ¼ acre lawn. In the winter the crib is warm and cosy; stay inside in front of the fire and enjoy the view, watch movies, and only leave the house if you want to avail yourself of the superb coffee or weekend takeaways on the menu at the well-stocked Karitane store. NZ famous Evansdale Cheese factory is a 5 minute drive away, now joined by Matakana Meats, while a slightly longer drive along the stunning Otago coast can take you to world famous Fleurs at Moerkai or to award winning Riverstone Kitchen for dinner or a leisurely Sunday brunch. Special conditions: * The crib is not a characterless rental; it is our holiday home and as such it contains many of our precious personal possessions. We ask our guests to enjoy all the facilities and contents that the crib has to offer, but to also respect and take care of our stuff. * The crib is best suited to couples, up to a maximum of 4 people. * No small children, smokers or pets please.           (Yes, all photos were taken from our property!) Out the back, there is nothing but grass between the property and the water. The sun-drenched conservatory and living room offer fantastic views of the sea and the ever-changing estuary with its interesting birdlife. Climb down to the water at high tide and launch the kayak! In the front of the property, a large macrocarpa hedge blocks both road noise and wind. A deck catches the afternoon and evening sun. There is a lovely sheltered garden on the large section -- ideal for BBQing and outdoor games, plus a double carport with plenty of off-street parking. The points of difference between our place and most others in Karitane: ? Fantastic views but gardens and privacy too ? Great for large groups: huge house with 2 toilets and unlimited hot water for showers ? Designed for comfort with king and queen beds, multiple recliners ? Very warm ? lots of double glazed windows, fully insulated, powerful woodburner and heat transfer system Are there any downsides? Well, not everyone will view the avocado green basin, and the ornate multi-coloured lounge carpet, as charming period features. And while it is very comfortably furnished, the furniture is neither new nor stylish. We regret that difficulties in child-proofing mean that it is not suitable for preschoolers, and if you're looking for a dishwasher or heat pump, sorry but you're plum out of luck. Still, it is large and comfortable and the views and outdoor areas are second to none. We love it, and we think you will too! Special conditions: Sorry but smoking and pets are not allowed anywhere on the property. Two night minimum stay for most of the year. Short bookings will not be accepted a long time in advance for holiday periods. We do not normally accept bookings from families with preschoolers as the property has hazards for this age group. Extras: Linen (included); NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave;
