The SpaceOur home was built from the ground up to be the ultimate eco-haven and is a sustainable design award-winner. The home uses natural building materials like strawbale walls and local/renewable wood. The design is passive solar, managing both heating and cooling without any conventional mechanical systems. That means we have no conventional air-conditioning system nor any conventional furnace. For cooling in the summer the green roof, awning above the south facing windows, window ventilation and fans provide all the cooling we need. In the winter when extra heat is required the in-floor hydronic heating system kicks in to make sure we are always comfortable. All energy is provided by renewable sources (there are zero fossil fuels for heating or cooling). The south face of the house incorporates 6 kW of solar PV as an awning above the windows as well as three large solar thermal hot water heating panels (for both domestic and home heating). There is also a 1 kW wind turbine on the property. We park a 2012 Chevy Volt electric vehicle in the car port. Guest AccessGuests have access to everything in the house except for some of the utility areas in the basement. Interaction with GuestsWe usually are available to do a tour of the house upon arrival so that guests are able to understand all the logic behind this award-winning sustainable home. The NeighborhoodHills of the Headwaters is a great place to live and visit. We have the Bruce trail less than a few hundred feet from the house. The gorgeous Hockley Valley provides great hiking and exploring, as well as skiing/boarding in the winter and golf in the summer. Getting AroundYou need a car. Parking space for several cars is available. Since we live just off Airport road, getting here from the airport is real easy, just head north from the airport on Airport Road for about 45 minutes. The SpaceThe house was built circa 1870, and has been carefully updated to add comfort while maintaining the original charm. Guest AccessThe Blue Room has a queen bed and two windows, south-facing and east-facing. If you need more space, please check Around the World, Green Room, for another guest room with a double bed. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2159235 Guests share access to two washrooms-one with an old-fashioned tub, and the other with a modern shower. Relax in the living room, dining area, or while overlooking the gardens from the back deck or front verandah. Interaction with GuestsI am happy to exchange travel stories, and to offer advice and help in planning excursions. I respect my guests' privacy and try to sense how much interaction they would like. The NeighborhoodMy home is in the tiny hamlet of Newton Robinson, which was a bustling community in the mid-1800's. There are still a number of beautifully maintained century homes from that period. History buffs may enjoy visiting local historic sites. Lovely country walks or bike rides can be enjoyed right outside the door. On a typical walk, I have seen hawks, herons, ducks, deer, racoons, muskrat, beaver, coyotes, skunks, and of course horses. A magical time is in the late spring when the nearby valley is twinkling with fireflies. Chipmunks, squirrels and a variety of birds are regular visitors in the garden. Visit El Lugar Con Pottery for Mexican Imports and delicious home baking. Antique hunters will enjoy the proximity to Cookstown's Antique Cupboard, and Innisfil's 400 Antique Market. The Cookstown Tangers Outlet Mall is also only a ten minute drive. Getting AroundA car or a bike are a necessity for getting to and from Newton Robinson. It is about 15 minutes from the Bradford Go station, for bus or train. Other Things to NoteGuests have a choice of tasty and nutritious breakfasts. Local foods are used whenever possible, such as honey, maple syrup, eggs, fruit and vegetables (Bradford is Ontario's vegetable producing centre). Bread is homemade, with flours ground at Beeton's k2 mills. I make my own preserves, such as jam and apple butter. I am continually trying to minimize my carbon footprint through re-using, recycling and composting. Laundry is usually hung in the fresh air to dry. If you would like to use your own sleeping bag or towels, you will receive a $5 credit. I have an English language book exchange -trade in your book for another. I have art and handicrafts for sale around the house. This includes my own textile work as well as items from Guatemala. The sale of Guatemalan items helps to support educational programs in Guatemala.

The SpaceJust yards from the retreat lies the Nottawasaga River – a naturalist and trout fisherman’s paradise. The Notty (Nottawasaga River) runs directly through the boundaries of our 77 acre private, secluded, forested property. The Nottwasaga River Retreat is perfect for quiet, relaxing family getaways. The retreat villa itself has a rustic feel but is an entirely modern living enclosure with all the necessary amenities. Guest AccessYou will have access to all amenities, full roaming of the 77 acre grounds, including the pristine Nottawasaga river and hiking trails. Interaction with GuestsThe Nottawasaga Retreat villa is fully rentable and aside from meeting with you to get you settled in, and helping you check out at the end of your stay, interaction is minimal unless you have special requests that need you'd like to accommodated. Other Things to NotePlease note that due to the Nottawasaga's low water levels during the majority of the year, as well as the narrow, winding stretches and rough patches in our particular region, that the river isn't suitable for any sort of boating/canoeing activities. One could possibly inner-tube lazily along small stretches should one choose to do so. We do not provide inner-tubes.
