Reviewed by: 2fromTX from Deep South Texas Reviewed on: 02/29/2016 for their stay in 07/2015 332344 - A typical Finnish summerhouse in Southern Finland. While travelling in Finland in July with my wife and two daughters aged 11 and 9, we wanted to not only see tourist sites but also get a feel for how a Finn would spend their summer. We stayed three days at this summer house and it was the highlight of our trip, not only to Finland, but also across Scandinavia. Our girls loved the outdoor feel of the place, just like a summer camp. There was plenty of games for them to play outside, including darts, badminton, and of course the Finnish game Molkky, in addition to riding in both the motor boat and the rowboat on the lake. Olly, the owner, also provided fishing gear and bait so they could fish off the shore in front of the cabin and catch small fish. We also loved the sauna that is attached to the cabin, and used it daily to heat up before jumping into the cold lake water. My wife was happy to sit outside and read on the shaded deck The cabin is less than two hours from Helsinki by a nice drive. The final road to the car park/boat launch appears to be into the woods, but Olly met us there and helped us load our baggage and supplies into a boat for a short ride over to the island and the cabin. The cabin is a nice size for a small family, with a family room and three bedrooms. The deck in front has a dining table and great views, so we had all of our meals outside.Everything was clean and tidy and quite picturesque, a step up from a rustic cabin since it has modern amenities like running water and electricity, but with a very outdoor feeling. The area around the cabin is wooded and there only a few other houses on the small island, none of which are within site of this cabin, so it feels very private and quiet. The lake itself was not busy when we were there in July. Our family enjoyed the island and lake so much that we took the boat across only once, and that was to dock and walk up to the grocery store to get food and drinks for dinner. Olly was the perfect host -- he lives in a cabin nearby and can come by boat in just a few minutes. He was very patient in showing our girls how to smoke the fish the caught and provided us with anything, including advice, that we needed. If you want to get away with your family in a private outdoor setting, this is a great option.

Puumerkki cottage, the cottage of stories Every place has its own story, but others have more than one. The Puumerkki cottage in Karjalohja has been offering accommodation for travelers for over 20 years. The yard has seen many games played, the sauna has been used until late in the night and there has been people running naked on the lake pear towards the water. Other good moments include the view of the Karjalohja church tower on the open lake and looking at the stars from the living room window while holding a hot beverage in the hand. Back in the time Puumerkki was a home to the family Syvähuoko with no less than 10 children. The family still owns the cottage today and thanks to the long ownership the place hides many incredible stories that Olli, the second eldest of the children, likes to share with others. The story of the roof of the old sauna The old sauna of Puumerkki stands right at the Puujärvi Lake and when looking from the yard the only thing visible from that direction is the roof. The original roof was made of peat and in the summer time wild strawberries grew there. In the mid 1960s, due the rain water the roof could not bear it any longer and it caved in. The new roof was made on the spot. Sand was brought to the site and a foundation shaped as the roof and on that a 5 – 10 cm thick concrete iron-bound shell was mounted. Due to the heavy material it was not possible to lift the shell up only by man power. Holes were dug under the shell and large empty air cushions were slipped in. With compressed air the shell rose to sufficient height and the rest of the sauna was built under it by using the timber from the old sauna. The story of the lake cottage In a family of 10 children any parents´ nerves would be tested. Jussi, the family father, solved the situation by building a really small cottage direct on the coastline. On the forest side of the cottage grow blueberry twigs and on the other side lap the waves of Puujärvi. The family father would always retreat to his cottage by the lake after the “ten o’clock news” to have some peace and quietness of his own. Meanwhile the rest of the family, mother and the children, stayed at the main house. Maija, a loving mother and a wife, went every evening to the cottage by the lake to kiss her husband goodnight. The Story of the mother´s cottage The father thought that it was only fair that also the mother would have her own resting place and decided to build one 50 meters away from his own cottage, on a mossy rock. To ensure the mother some piece and quietness her cottage was build on a three-meter-high concrete pillar. To be able to get into the cottage the mother had to climb a ladder first up to get to the entrance of the cottage which was a trapdoor. Jussi had thought everything thoroughly. He added bearing under the cottage so the window of the cottage could be aimed to a direction that the morning sun would not wake the mother up. Maija spent couple of nights in her cottage but then she realized that it was too troublesome and returned back to the main house. This cottage does not any longer exist but the pole where it used to be can still be seen. On the base of it there can still be seen the hand marks of the father and Jussi the youngest of siblings who has already passed away. The life of the Syvähuoko family in Puumerkki has been filled with family stories alike. The Puumerkki cottage also tells the stories of the travelers. The nature, tranquility and the stunning surroundings offer the travelers a great chance to make stories of their own that will last in their memories.

The SpaceE18 motorway runs only 10 kilometres from the cabin which is situated 92 kilometres both from the Turku and Helsinki city centres. Guest AccessYou can freely use everything in the cabin and have access to all locations. You can also freely use the wood for heating the sauna and setting up the fireplace. Remember to be careful if you are having a fire place outside - there is always risk for forest fire if there has not been rain. Interaction with GuestsI am available for the questions and assistance in any time. The NeighborhoodThe distance for the neighbours is longer than you can expect in the Finnish summer houses. Here you can be in your own and can skin dip freely from the sauna direct to the lake. From sauna beach the distance to the nearest neighbours is 500 metres (no visual sight) and 300 meters. The forest behind the cabin is full of eatable mushrooms (please, know the species before picking them), blueberries and lingonberries. Getting AroundI recommend you rent a car. The last part of the road has a tricky hill climb but trust the car with the friction control and you make it! The bus & taxi combination is possible, the bus stop is also 10 km away from the cabin and taxi to the place cost around 20 euros. Also host can help you with transportation, please do not hesitate to ask. Other Things to NoteThe rent includes the access to the cabin's rowing boat and you can for instance make a fishing trip to the lake. You need fishing permit for using lures, but fishing with worms is free. The lake is rich if fresh water crabs and the cabin has equipment for catching them. The crab hunt period starts in the end of July.

Great new villa by the lake, good and safe beach for children. We use the villa a lot, but also take few rental guests every now and then. Sun shines to property all day (in the summer time, in the winter only few hours, this is Finland..) and the lake is perfect for swimming and fishing. Clean water and plenty of fishes. There are three different buildings, the villa (80m2 + upstairs 60 m2), guesthouse (20m2) and sauna building (20m2) on the beach. Big living room and kitchen and huge terraces. Nearest village Suomusjärvi is about 15km ( good grocery) and small city Salo 30km away. To Helsinki 100km, good highway and you can leave the highway to the nearest village. We love this place, and our kids too, and you´re gonna love it too! This is what Finland is all about. Not so far from National Park of Teijo, which is fabulous! Extra facilities can be provided, like cleaning and cooking and fishing guide trips. We live about 45min away, so privacy is guaranteed, but we are close enough to help if anything is needed.
