The SpaceThis is a beautiful and cozy cape house overlooking a sloping lawn to a tidal creek. Gorgeous every season, including autumn leaf peeping time! The master bedroom and bathroom and laundry are on the first floor. The kitchen opens to the dining room, which has large sliding glass doors to the back deck (two levels). The living room is comfortable, including a new futon which folds out into a double bed. The second floor looks down on the dining room. One of the rooms is open in this space, with day bed and trundle. The other two rooms each have a single bed. Guest AccessYou will be able to access the entire house except for one locked bedroom. This includes a gas grill on the back deck. You are welcome to use our bicycles and boogie boards stored in the basement, as well as house canoe, kayak, paddles, and life jackets. There is a lock box on the door with the key in it, so late arrivals are no problem. Check it is usually at 3:00 pm unless I can accommodate earlier arrival. Checkout is at 11:00 am. Interaction with GuestsA family friend who lives locally will be a contact, if needed. You will be able to text me or call at any time if you have questions. The NeighborhoodOur home is in a family neighborhood on a side road near two beautiful public beaches. Our neighbors are friendly and most are full time residents They appreciate quiet at night, especially as many have young children. Getting AroundYou will probably want a car to get into town, unless you are avid cyclists. However, two local beaches are in short biking distance, and there is tidal creek access in our back yard. Fort Foster and Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier are less than a mile away, so walking and biking are a wonderful option. See further detailed information about beaches, parks, and other activities below: BEACHES and PARKS Fort Foster- This is a wonderful park for children, adults, families, individuals. There are beaches, paths, playgrounds, picnic areas, forts to climb, a long pier, and beautiful views. The gate to the fort is 0.85 miles away. Take a left out our driveway, a right onto Pocahontas, and drive straight. The gate usually opens at 10:00 am, sometimes earlier in the summer and on weekends. Before this, you can usually park outside the gate and walk in to the beaches. The walk is about 1/3 a mile. Or you can drive in during park hours. The cost is $10 per car, or $5 per person ($1 per child) walking or biking (these rates may not be accurate, but close). Sea Point Beach and Crescent Beach - 1.7 miles to the parking lot, although non-residents park 0.1 - 0.2 closer (parking areas are marked, or park on the side of the road before that). These are two adjacent beaches which are generally quiet, with mild surf, very soft sand, and a grassy and rocky walking area at the point where the two beaches meet. A great bike ride (a couple of gradual and persistent hills). No costs for this beach, no public facilities. York Beach - Long Sands and Short Sands - Great spot for families. Large beaches, many people, more surf, life guards, food, souvenir shops, restaurants. Nubble Light House is in between the two beaches and worth the trip. Right near the light house is Dunne’s Ice Cream (used to be the famous Brown’s Ice Cream). Short Sands is just beyond Long Sands, and also has a playground, basketball nets, more parking, home made salt water taffy made before your very eyes, and the Arcade and Bowling Alley. Fort McLary - another park at the site of a former WWI military fort. This Park, about two miles on the left if you head back toward Kittery Circle on 103, is smaller. There are a couple of areas to climb and beautiful views, but no easy beach access. Odiorne State Park and Seacoast Science Center in Rye, NH (just south of Portsmouth on rte 1A) are worth a visit, especially if you have interested children. EXPLORE PORTSMOUTH - Great restaurants and shopping, but also a wide selection of entertainment, including plays, live music, theater and music in the Prescott Park. Look into (URL HIDDEN) for a lot more information. KITTERY OUTLETS - If you want to shop, take a left out of our driveway, a left onto Pocahontas, a left over the bridge, a left onto Chauncey Creek Rd, a left onto 103, and then take a right onto Haley Rd, just across from the gas station (and right before the fire station). Stay on that windy road for about 3 miles until you reach a light, which is route one. Most of the shopping is to your right. Other Things to NoteYou can use any food in the kitchen unless it is labeled otherwise, but please check dates on items if you do choose to use our staples. Please discard leftover food you have, unless you think it would be useful for the next visitors. Please do not smoke anywhere on this property. The trash is in the closet to the left of the fridge. Mixed recycling is to the left of that. Trash pick up is on Tuesdays at 7:00 am. There is poison ivy at the edges of the yard. If you are playing in the yard, wear long pants and socks and wash afterwards. There is none immediately surrounding the driveway, deck, or path to the water. We have never had anyone find a tick after being at our house, but it is an endemic area, so a tick check at the end of the day might be helpful as a precaution. The seventh sleeping accommodation is listed as a couch (not a sofa bed), so it does not convert to a bed, but is long enough and comfortable enough for most adults to sleep on.

Our home: Very peaceful, casual, eclectic home, of two Creative’s (one professional guitarist/composer and one part-time painter/full time lover of color and all things design. We are both art, music and natural health enthusiasts. Our Maine beach house is filled with art, color, antiques, and yard sale finds and overlooks 2 beautiful beaches, Rachel Carson protected marshland, and Isle of Shoals. It is very casual here, please feel free to hang out in pjs or robes provided while you have coffee or tea on the deck. Your space: Vast marsh to ocean views from your private, large, open concept living/dining room (we have our own separate living room, eating area, etc.) and your deck space which is accessed via slider in your living room. Interaction with GuestsWe are here often but not always, and are very available should you have questions, texting is the best means of communicating but if texting's not your thing we can make a plan B. Our living area is pretty separate from yours, and other than the shared areas, you can have as little or as much privacy as you want. There is a door between the kitchen and your living room that you can leave open or close for more privacy. I may close the door if I'm cooking to spare you the noise, I can be a loud cook! We love to chat if you do, but if not that's fine too :) Either way, the deck is a really nice place to have coffee or tea in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening, as is the beach! The NeighborhoodNearby: We are actually on an island that is connected by a small bridge, Cutts Island. The estuary, marshlands (Rachel Carson protected areas) and ocean are on one side and Rachel Carson Wildlife Sanctuary is on the other so there are lots of wonderful views. We are minutes away from many beaches, wonderful restaurants, shopping, ropes course and lobster! This is a beautiful and cozy Maine Post and Beam Cape house overlooking a sloping lawn to a tidal creek. Gorgeous every season, including autumn leaf peeping time! The feeling inside the house is open and rustic, but not old. I, with wifi and basic TV, but no extensive cable channels. Quiet family neighborhood on small island. Neighborhood is on a circle with very little traffic. Ocean view when walking around the circle. Most families have small boats on the tidal creek in back. They are friendly but keep to themselves and appreciate our quiet, as well.

Perched high on a knoll at the very tip of Kittery Point, the Red Cottage { built in 1740 } , has undergone a series of changes during the intervening 275 years . The cottage has just undergone a complete renovation , and while retaining some of the original features which include Indian shutters, wide pine paneling , and match stick moldings, it has been brought into the 21st century with such additions as an elevator, en suite bathrooms, a modern kitchen, and central heating and air conditioning. The Red Cottage has an interesting and historic past. Built on the same property where the first dwelling in Kittery was erected in 1636 , the cottage has stood throughout the entire course of American history from colonial days to the present. On November 2nd, 1789, George Washington came ashore at the stone pier in front of the cottage to attend the Congregational church at the head of the lane. This same stone pier had been erected by yet another important figure in American history, Sir William Pepperrell, a prominent merchant and a hero of the siege of Louisbourg in 1758 { during the French and Indian war }. It was here that Pepperrell had command over a fleet of more than 100 sailing ships trading throughout much of the modern world. During the Civil War the cottage was occupied by Hannibal Hamlin while he was the acting vice president under Abraham Lincoln in the latter's first term as President. Hamlin was stationed at nearby Fort McClary, which was built in 1689, and today remains a State Park and an important historical site. In 1870 Admiral Farragut visited the Red Cottage while he was on vacation at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard . He died in Portsmouth later that same year. My great great grandmother, who lived in Portsmouth, N.H., acquired the Red Cottage as a summer residence in 1855, and we purchased it from other members of the family in 1988. We have five boys and one daughter, and it is our plan to rent the cottage during our lifetime and then to pass it on to our children . Located on a 3 1/2 acre peninsula comprising the very tip of Kittery Point , with over 925 feet of waterfront , the Red Cottage property itself has a wonderful deep water dock, pier, float system, and boat house. At the face of the floats the depth is 22' at low water. There is excellent fishing as well as squidding at night from the pier under the lights . Lobsters are plentiful, and are always available for our guests to enjoy for lobster dinners on the porch. The location is very private with ample parking for all guests. The view of the Harbor and light houses is unsurpassed. There is also plenty of room for a wedding or social event if that is of interest. The cottage is comprised as follows: on the ground floor there is a bedroom with a king sized bed, a double fold out leather couch, and an en suite bathroom. A second bedroom is furnished with a full sized set of bunk beds { both beds are traditional size double beds }. The two rooms together make an excellent space for children or others who may wish to have privacy from the remainder of the house. A common area in the spacious entry hall just outside these two rooms includes a sink, microwave, and refrigerator\ freezer. The ground floor also includes a two car garage, laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers , as well as a spacious entrance foyer leading to the elevator. On the main floor there is a wheelchair accessible bedroom with a king sized bed and en suite bathroom located just opposite the elevator. This room is very private yet readily accessible to the kitchen, living room, dining room, and front porch. The tiled kitchen is spacious and includes a 36" Viking gas range , two sinks and work stations , double side by side refrigerator and freezer, as well as seating for 10 - 12 at breakfast. All counter tops are granite , and the kitchen cabinets are cherry with leaded glass doors. A door leads to the sun porch directly off the kitchen where meals may be enjoyed outside at tables overlooking the waterfront. The adjacent formal dining room seats twelve , and is enhanced by the original Indian shutters, match stick molding, and fireplace. A spacious living room is located on the other side of the central foyer which also houses the elevator. The living room and dining room are connected by a main entrance hallway that houses a powder room as well as the front door leading onto the porch. The covered front porch is furnished with a classic Woodard wrought iron table and chairs as well as a full set of Seaside Adirondack outdoor furniture, to include a picnic table, eight chairs , a loveseat, and two chaise lounges . One end of the porch houses an outdoor kitchen including a Viking Professional outdoor grill with side burners . There is also a sink and stainless steel drawers all built into a tiled counter with a granite counter top and back splash . Elevated on a knoll, the views from the porch are spectacular; especially the sunsets! The second floor includes three bedrooms all with en suite bathrooms and king sized beds. All bathrooms throughout the cottage have granite vanities and fully tiled showers with glass door enclosures. Every room in the house has water views, and all bedrooms have 48" flat screen "smart" TVs { there is a 55" Sony 4K "smart" TV in the living room } , and a desk with WIFI connection. The elevator arrives in a central hall between the bedrooms , and a traditional stairway leads back down to the living room and front foyer. Upon entering our driveway there is a beautiful unobstructed view looking out of the mouth of the harbor to the open ocean. Fort Constitution Lighthouse (the terminus of Paul Revere's ride) is on the right side of the entrance to the harbor , and Whale back lighthouse is on the left side . Situated at the very tip of Kittery Point , with views out to sea as well as the whole harbor, guests can enjoy both sunrise and sunset. Kayaks and a rowboat are available for guests' use, and a 17' Boston Whaler is available to qualified operators. In addition we can offer sunset cruises, whale watching, deep sea fishing, or sightseeing aboard our 32" boat, the "Anna D". Our locally renown lobster rolls, fish chowder, fresh fish, and live lobsters may be ordered in advance. Award winning pies and cakes homemade on the premises are also available for our guests. The White Mountains of New Hampshire are only one hour and a half away. Nationally famous L.L.Bean and Cabela's are within 45 minutes. The fabulous Ogunquit { Maine } playhouse is twenty minutes distant by car. There are several undiscovered nearby beaches mostly known only to locals, and the famous York beaches and Wild Kingdom are located in the neighboring town of York, Maine. For rainy days one could consider shopping at the renowned Kittery Outlet Malls. During June, July , and August rentals are by the week, running from Sunday to Sunday unless other arrangements are made with the owners.
