The SpaceNew, owner-built and eco-friendly, we have a private, garden-filled space on the exciting Big Island of Hawaii. We've have planted organic fruit and coffee tree orchards, while keeping the natural landscape and flora of large tree ferns, flowering Ohia trees and wild orchids and gingers. We are old hands at farming and gardening and we share that with many of our good neighbors, as you can see while you drive around the island in awe of it's many colorful and beautiful attractions. Everyone's yards are filled with Ti leaves (a Hawaiian good spirit), flowers and fruit trees. We provide all natural soaps and cleaning products for guests who prefer a chemical-free environment. We ask that you please refrain from using any scented soaps, candles, fabric softeners or fragrances in our house, but use the products that are provided. There are many people, like ourselves, who are extremely sensitive to foods and skin-care products. We offer up our home as a green space, a safe place, a fragrance and chemical -free home for those who need relief from the exposures that are common while traveling. We have a 4,000 gallon rainwater catchment tank that provides the softest water your skin and hair will ever feel. After a long flight, enjoy a spacious hot shower and super comfortable bed to ward off jet lag. On your first morning, wake up to seasonal fruits, flowers and chilled juices (provided by request only) to start on your aloha adventure or just walk around and take in the view. On a clear day, you can see both the mountain and the ocean from the corner above the driveway. All of the windows and doors have tight screens to allow the trade winds to blow through the house. Or you can close them all if it rains, and stay warm and dry (a real treat if the winter snow or thunder rolls down at night from the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa). You can really feel the difference in temperature when driving from sea level to higher elevations, so bring layers in the winter months. We hope that you find our lovely, Hawaiian home the perfect spot to relax, feel safe and refreshed for the many excursions you'll want to make around the island. It's THE place to recover if you've entered the Ironman Competition in Kona. And just one more thing. If you're interested in the richness of the ancient Hula, drumming and chanting of islanders all over the world, check out the Merrie Monarch Festival held in Hilo each spring. You'll never forget the cool breezes, the rainbows, the colors, the blending of Eastern and Western cultures and the fine aloha spirit that everyone shares in this tropical paradise. We welcome you to share this Aloha time. You'll be grateful that you did! Guest Accesswant to

The SpacePrice Includes State taxes!! Free covered parking. You can view the tropical landscape through the large picture windows in the main living area and feel comfortably in tune with nature, as the house was built with largely recycled materials and also makes use of the native Ohia logs. This cabin is secluded in tropical landscaping and native forest but also hidden in the forest is a skylight opening to a vast underground network of lava tubes, so please stay within the cleared areas. Surveyed in the early 1990's, the Kazumura caves are believed to run all the way to the ocean. A Hardwood floor in living room, tile in the entry, kitchen area and bathroom are just a few new additions. Newly updated interior paint. We try to provide everything you need with fans in living area and bedroom, TV/ DVD player, WiFi, new large refrigerator, new stove/oven, french press coffee maker in the kitchen, gas BBQ grill on the lanai, washing machine & clothes line under house and little extras like cooking oil, salt/pepper, coffee sample/ creamer & sugar, glad wrap, paper towels, kleenex and complete linen set up. We do not have a microwave. The bedroom has a queen size bed with memory foam mattress and a sofa bed that pulls out to a standard size bed. There are also beach towels & chairs as well as masks & snorkels for those beach excursions. Flashlights and umbrellas also. We take care to make your stay special from having fresh tropical flower arrangements to candles and white Christmas lights on the lanai. Our son-in-law, daughter, 3 children and 2dogs & 2 cats live next door up the back on 3 adjoining acres. They are friendly and you may see them about. The dogs would love you to pet them but you can also just tell them to go home! They like howling at night at times just to be warned. There are also frog noises at night also. We provide ear plugs as some of our quests have problems sleeping. Fern Grotto Cottage, in the Puna district of the Big Island of Hawaii, is centrally located between Hilo, Volcano National Park, and Pahoa (20 min each way). Just turn into Hawaiian Acres one mile north of Kirtistown onto Kuauli Rd.. We are 5 miles from the Volcano Hwy 11on a paved 8 Rd. The Puna district is spectacular, with ragged sea cliffs, black sand beaches, overgrown rainforests, flowing lava, and quaint little towns. Wander the Maku'u Market near the little village of Pahoa on Sundays, Hilo's farmers market on Saturday & Wednesday. Take in Volcano Village and the National Park, and don't miss the great snorkeling at the Kapoho tidepools . Hawaii Volcanoes NP is still the states #1attraction . The fee is $20/vehicle and they are open 24 hours a day. We have snorkel gear at the cottage (no fins) for beach excursions. The Richardson's Beach Park in Hilo is a great beach to snorkel (our personal favorite). The tide pools at Kapoho are great too. Don't forget to see the waterfalls. Akaka Falls State Park has a self- guided 0.4 mile loop trail that takes you past Kahuna Falls and the 442 ft Akaka Falls. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on Scenic Drive is a must see. Trails, waterfalls, ocean vistas are a few of the things to see. Rainbow Falls and the Boiling pots in Hilo are also on my list (no swimming as there are dangerous under currents). Hilo also has one of my favorite parks. The Lili'uokalani Gardens on Banyan Drive with views of Hilo Bay and Coconut Island. Also worth seeing is the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens. It is the only tropical rainforest zoo in the United States with over 80 animals. Both these parks are free. Guest AccessJust help yourselves into the house using the lock box keys by the door. The SpaceMy comfortable little cabin is an example of sustainable entirely off-grid living in Hawaii. It has a 500 watt solar system and batteries for power, water catchment for water, a lava rock outdoor shower with hot water (propane, yes, there is some fossil fuel use even here), and a rainwater-fed outhouse with a flushing toilet for doing your business. It's a one-room cabin on three acres about 15 minutes from Hilo airport and centrally located to all that East Hawaii has to offer, from the Kapoho warm ponds to the active Kilauea volcano to the beautiful Hamakua Coast. I'm biased, but this little house makes me very happy just hanging out. I visit regularly (I live mostly in Santa Barbara) and I work on writing projects or just putz around the place doing landscaping or home improvement. It rains regularly, a delicious warm rain, which keeps it lush and full of life. The kitchen is fully equipped with a two-burner stove, a medium-sized fridge and a large sink. It's a lot of fun to cook in! There's also a little grill for use on the lanai if you want to go native and cook some local ahi in ti leaves on the grill (a local specialty). There are no visible neighbors and it's pretty jungly so if you like walking around in your birthday suit in nature, or just to the lava rock outside shower, this is the place for you. I also offer the chance to rent my Smart ForTwo tiny (EMAIL HIDDEN) Just email me for more info on this option. Guest AccessA one-room cabin (16x16), with covered deck (lanai, 8x16) that's a good size for one or two people. There's also a futon for guests to sleep over and covered parking. Interaction with GuestsMy property manager lives in Hilo and will be the direct contact in most circumstances. You'll need to stop by her house and get the key on the way to my house or they'll sometimes meet you at the house. The NeighborhoodIf you're interested in experiencing pristine Hawaii this is a great place to do it. My place offers the convenience of being only five minutes from Keaau, and only a few minutes from a 7-Eleven, the J. Hara Store (with the best fried chicken ever), and fifteen minutes from Hilo, but also out in the country with only one neighbor who isn't even visible or audible. Birds abound, as well as geckos and frogs. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance but use the smoke rings available in the cabin and you'll be good to go. Getting AroundThe nearest bus stop is about a mile away. Other Things to NoteIt rains almost every day at least for a little, which is how it stays so green, usually in short heavy showers that give way to sunny skies before too long. It's always warm, though, so it's not an inconvenient rain like it is in colder climates. 70s to low 80s is the temperature range all year 'round. Cell phone reception is great, which doubles as computer Internet access for those with iPhones or other smartphones that can tether to your computer (using either USB, wifi or bluetooth). I use my iPhone for Internet on my computer when I'm working at my cabin and it works great. In terms of power, the house is fully wired like a normal house with outlets, etc.

The SpaceCurrent the lava is flowing towards the ocean and you can hike to it. It would take you 30 minutes drive from my house to the starting point of the 5 mile hike. The property is situated only 30 minutes drive from the Volcano National Park and 20 minutes drive to Hilo. In addition to the bedroom there are 2 other bedrooms available in the same house if you have more people in your group to accommodate. Click on view my full profile to see other rooms. A large propane barbecue grill is available. The property is situated on catchment with a brand new 15000 gal tank, granule filter, charcoal filter and UV filter which makes the water completely safe to drink. The double outdoor shower is a popular attraction. The property is in close proximate to the Volcano National Park, lava tubes, steam vents, numerous water falls, zip line, tsunami museum, Mauna Kea Observatory, Botanical Garden, Orchid farm and many more to see. I am also available as a tour guide. I am familiar with the island as to what it has to offer, since I lived on the West side for 5 years and 6 years on the east side. My charges is normally $20/hour and if needed I can supply a vehicle at an additional $5/hour plus gas. This might allow you to forgo on renting a vehicle. Feel free to inquire more if interested. I have books and maps available to be used for planning your excursions. So the Big Island is a very special place, with one of the few active volcanoes in the world. A must see is the Volcano National Park, where you would be able to see the glow of the lava inside the crater, walk inside a lava tube, see volcanic steam vent holes and walk on numerous hiking trails. Here are some free stuff you can do, the orchid farm, snorkel and look at the colorful tropical fish small and low key zoo, stop at South Point (Ka Lae), the most southern point of US territory, green sand beach, Rain bow falls, the boiling pots, snorkel/swim with dolphins at Hookena or 2 steps, St Benedict`s Painted Church, walk the Hilo down town stores and fruit market place, visit the Captain Cook Monument at Kealakekua bay, walk down the spectacular Waipio or Polulu valleys, travel up Mauna Kea to look at the Observitories and stars through the telescopes set up at the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, swim with the ocean turtles or see them sleep and bask at many of the more secluded beaches on the island, like Kiholo Bay and Punaluu Black Sand Beach, tan and swim at many of the white sand beaches, like Magic Sands, Hapuuna, Mauna Kea, Makalavena, visit many of the historic Hawaiian centers on the island and bath in the water fall at the Kolekole Beach Park. These are only but a few things you could do, to many to mention. Paying stuff would be, visit the Tsunami museum, Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, take a fight on the Blue Hawaiian helicopters, swim and snorkel with the manta-rays at night, Zip line across the Akaka falls or rain forest settings, ATV and horse riding excursions, variety of boat and catamaran activities being offered. Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding could also be a fun activity to do. Guest AccessShared kitchen, bathroom and laundry facility. The SpaceIn the spirit of aloha I don't charge a security deposit, taxes or cleaning fees. Recent additions include snorkel equipment for 2 adults, a cooler with wheels and a handle like on luggage, beach towels, 2 beach chairs, and 2 double-wide rope hammocks with pillows in the back yard. The living area of my newly remodeled ohana (guest house) features a 100-inch projection TV home theater with a 540 watt surround sound system, DVR, satellite TV, a super comfy leather love seat with separate recliners, dozens of great movies, free coffee, tea and popcorn and high speed internet access (the bandwidth is limited so you need to check with me before streaming audio or video). There is also a futon which can sleep up to 2 additional guests. The kitchen area features a full sized fridge, microwave, toaster oven, crockpot, 2-burner gas stove, knife set, cutting boards, toaster, blender, electric can opener, pots and pans, dishes, wine glasses, corkscrew, etc., and the kitchen table has 4, soft swivel chairs. You get free access to the front-loading washer/dryer with supplied laundry soap and softener. I also supply dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, even a toothbrush if you need it. The awesome bathroom has a mirrored wall, black granite floor tile, marble tile on the tub/shower surround, an infinity light in the ceiling, a black granite vanity top and a white marble sink that changes color as it is lit from below with LED lights. The bedroom has a new pillow-topped queen-size bed, black light posters and a ceiling which has been hand painted with a galaxy and stars that glow under 3 black lights. There is a 39-inch wall mounted TV connected to a BD/DVD player, and a glass topped desk with a 6 speaker computer sound system. Outside you have your own private deck with a view going back hundreds of feet into the two acre yard with 3 ponds (sometimes empty), a dozen ducks and a few chickens wandering around, coconut trees and other tropical foliage, including an avocado tree (in season November-March) and passion fruit growing just steps from your door. Sitting on the deck under the stars at night listening to the frogs and birds is very relaxing, and you can use my gas grill if you’d like. The location couldn’t be better when it comes to seeing all the great places there are to visit here, including free tours inside the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea (tours must be booked in advance online), steam vents on the volcano, Rainbow Falls in Hilo, snorkeling in tide pools at Kapoho (like being inside an aquarium), a clothing optional beach, lava tubes with fresh water you can swim through, hiking trails along the coast in Volcano National Park, and much more. The lava is currently flowing into the ocean just 30 minutes away. A guide book, _Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed_, is provided so you can discover all the things there are to see and do here. If you read the reviews you will see how everyone has really enjoyed their stay in my unique little hideaway. Note: There may be some noise during the day from some construction work next door, but so far only about 10 hours per month of work has occurred. The occasional noise hasn't disturbed any guests, who are usually out exploring the island during the day. So far the noise has not been an issue at all. DIRECTIONS: The place is located in Orchidland, 5 miles from the ocean at an elevation of roughly 500 feet, about 10 miles south of the Hilo airport, and it is very easy to get to. From the airport the first light you come to is Highway 11 (Kanoelehua Ave.). You make a left turn onto that road and travel south about 5 miles, then just before you get to Keaau you make a left onto Highway 130 heading toward Pahoa. Continue south on 130 about 4 miles to where the road narrows to 2 lanes, then make a right turn onto Pohaku Drive. My place is on the left about 1.2 miles up the road. Look for a brown and white house with a rock-walled pond in front. Unlike many vacation rentals in this area there are paved roads all the way. I am a single, 63-year-old writer and musician very much into metaphysics and liberal politics. I use the name Koda for all my public work, which can be found at my personal site, kodasplace. I live in the house on the opposite side of the separate building you will be staying in. I like my privacy and you can be sure I will respect yours. I can be your interesting new friend in Hawaii or the guy you rarely see unless you need something. You can count on me to do everything I can to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Feel free to call me anytime regardless of your time zone. Thank you for considering Koda’s Artsy Rainforest Hideaway as the centerpiece of your escape to Hawaii. Mahalo! (thank you) Dan (Koda) Guest AccessYou have access to the laundry room and entire yard, but the ground is very uneven so shoes are recommended. Interaction with GuestsI like my privacy and will respect yours. I can be your interesting new friend in Hawaii or the guy you rarely see unless you need something. You can count on me to do everything I can to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The NeighborhoodThis place is located on a paved road 10 miles south of Hilo and 5 miles from the ocean at an elevation of 500 feet. It is a rural area with chickens, a goat, a couple sheep and dogs out of sight next door. There are no neighbors on 5 of the 6 adjacent lots so most of the area is untouched rainforest. The closest town is Keaau, about 3 miles north, and Pahoa is 4 miles to the south. Excellent snorkeling is available 15 miles away in Kapoho and Volcano National Park is 30 minutes away. A bit further is the road to Mauna Kea and the observatories and visitor center. Kehena beach (clothing optional) is on the south coast. In Hilo you will find Rainbow Falls, parks and boating on the bay, plus Walmart, Target and a shopping mall. Getting AroundYou need a rental car to get around the island. 4-wheel-drive is recommended if you plan to go to the observatories but a regular car can get there. The dirt road is well maintained but develops washboards so you need to drive slowly at times. Other Things to NoteThe ducks like to sit on the driveway, but if you drive slowly they WILL get out of the way.
