The NeighborhoodA rich and vibrant neighborhood, Freetown was voted "Best place to live downtown" in 2013 and for good reason! With easy access to all the hot spots and the infamous I-10/I-49 intersection, this location is ideal for night-owls and day-trippers alike.
While the house sits firmly in the neighborhood, just a short walk in any direction brings you into the best of Lafayette culture. Within one half mile of the house is the heart of downtown, Jefferson St. featuring an array of at least 20 restaurants and bars, a public library, the Rosa Parks Transportation Center (train/city bus/ greyhound bus station), major banks, historic buildings, galleries, a splash pad, hair salons, retail shops ranging from crafts to bicycles to pastries, museums, great live music venues, coffee shops, the oldest continually operating ice cream parlor in America- Borden's, a farmers' market Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, plus, the highlight of our spring and summer Friday nights, Downtown Alive! and our two largest spring events- Mardi Gras and Festival International de Louisiane!!
Within one mile of the house we have a large, lovely park which is the location of our largest fall event, Festival Acadiens et Creoles, a dog park, a variety of churches, a larger farmers' market on Saturday mornings, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the Oil Center, the historic Vermilionville, and more restaurants.
Within two miles of the house we have yet another Arts and Farmers' market on Saturday morning, the Heymann Performing Arts Center, a hospital, The Cajundome, Blackham Coliseum, the LITE Center, more parks, a movie theater, and of course more restaurants.
Beyond the two-mile mark, we have a large mall with several department stores, the Vermilion River with landings at different entry points, and a development that is a village within the city called River Ranch that features shopping, eating, drinking, and which hosts its own spring/fall series Rhythms on the River.
Acadiana is not just Lafayette. Outside of town but within ours and the neighboring parishes, our quaint nearby towns feature their own character. You may enjoy antiquing in Washington or Breaux Bridge. Or maybe a trip to the Atchafalaya Basin for a tour is of interest. Then there's the State Capitol just 45 minutes to the East. Keep going and you'll get to New Orleans, but you may never want to leave! To the West you'll find the Boudin Festival in Scott come April. Go south and run into Abbeville, but stop and enjoy some fresh-shucked oysters at Shuck's or Dupuy's. "Up north" 30 minutes you hit Opelousas. And go a little further to find some of Lafayette's locals' favorite camping at Indian Creek.
No matter where you turn or how far you go, you'll find something to do! Getting AroundWe have so many things to do and see within walking distance, you may never need to get in a car, but if you do, driving around is pretty painless. If you want to get around hands-free, Lafayette now has UBER! This fast and reliable option is accessible through their website or smartphone app.
The nearest city bus stop is half a block away and their routes are found on (URL HIDDEN) If bicycling is your thing, options are available; just ask. Other Things to NoteAs of May 3, 2016 we will no longer be booking reservations that include pets.
