Transylvania County is called, 'Camp Country USA' for its Mecca of summer camps. Transylvania County may be short on Disneyesque costumed characters, but its storybook charm and opportunities for adventure have delighted the young — and the young at heart — for over a century. It’s a natural amusement park with thrilling rides, magical scenery, interesting wildlife, hands-on arts and education, a killer toy store in the center of downtown Brevard and what might possibly be the best natural waterside around – Sliding Rock. Lake Toxaway is Western North Carolina’s largest private lake, located at a 3010 foot elevation. With 14 miles of shoreline and 640 acres, this lake has pristine, drinkable quality water. The lake boasts a constant water level achieved by over a hundred streams and springs that fed the lake. Even in the extreme and exceptional drought of 2007 our water level was at full pool. Lake Toxaway is popular for boating, fishing, skiing, sailing and many other water sports. This private lake does not allow jet skis. Lake Toxaway is surrounded by State and National Forests and Parks. Bordering the 5000 acres of Lake Toxaway Estates is the 10,000 acre Panthertown Valley Wilderness Area, part of the Nantahala National Forest, the 11,000 acre Gorges State Park, and the Pisgah National Forest. All of these parks and forest offer abundant opportunities to hike, view waterfalls, mountain bike, fly fish, camp and even hunt. Ideally located halfway between Cashiers and Brevard - famous for the Brevard Music Festival and just over an hour to the Biltmore Estates in Asheville. Historic Hendersonville is just 45 minutes away featuring the Flat Rock Playhouse. Between the forests, the rivers, the lakes and the waterfalls, there are countless sites for family camping, picnicking, cycling and just letting young imaginations run wild. And if that isn’t enough to entice the child in your backseat, perhaps they just need to spend a little time with the salamanders over at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education or get the lowdown on Saturn’s Rings up at P.A.R.I. Crafty kids will appreciate family-friendly classes at several of the studios located on the 276 Art tour, including Mud Dabbers. And almost every single one of Transylvania County’s festivals has dedicated kid space and more things to excite your favorite elementary-schooler than she could shake a pixie-stick at. So when you’re planning your next family vacation, the question is not, 'What can the kids do?' but 'How can the do it all..

The SpaceThis efficiency is part of a solid cedar log home, set in the mountains of Lake Toxaway. It has it's own entrance and is cut off from the rest of the house, so you have all the privacy you could want. We have wi-fi, but no TV. Basic cooking facilities. The room is spacious (450 sq ft), with a double bed, sitting area and desk. The weather is really nice here, so we have never needed air conditioning. We have great fans for the rare occasions that they are needed . In the winter, we warm the house with a German wood stove that we imported when this house was build. Your space has it's own wood stove for heating. It has an attachable screen, if you want to leave it open for that "fireplace" feeling. Bed linen and towels are provided. The efficiency is part of our house, but with it's own entrance. You'll have to like steps, because as you can see from the photos, there are a few steep steps to reach your door. We are home most of the time & available for any questions you might have You are it ! This is a very private place. Just the two of us & you, and you need never see us if that's your choice. There is no shared space other than the outdoors We are about 3 miles away from the Lake and a little closer to the French Broad Headwaters, where there are various water activities available. This is a rural area, and very very beautiful, surrounded by forests, lot's of waterfalls and hikes . We are 12 miles away from Brevard and 14 miles away from Cashiers (the closest town) Where we are, you cannot see any other houses...although they are close enough. There is a valley with a natural trout stream about 100 yards from your door. You will need your own car to get around. There is a refrigerator. There is a hot plate, a crockpot & a small oven for your use. Guest AccessThe efficiency is part of our house, but with it's own entrance. The SpaceFind relaxation and quiet in this mountain home. Sitting atop a 4,000-foot mountain off a rural road of Christmas tree farms, this three bedroom, two bath home is surrounded by national forests with miles of trails. A private lake is within a 45-minute hike and is stocked with trout, while the nearby Tanassee Creek is known for its fly fishing. Enjoy a fire in the wood stove, take in the view while you grill on the deck, or simply lounge in the king-size bed in the master bedroom. Please note that this house is no frills — technically, it's a double-wide that has an updated kitchen, new engineered wood floors in the main living space and new furniture from Ikea. Cosmetically the bathrooms are not perfect and the deck is a bit wobbly. But it's quiet and great for hiking or exploring the mountains/Blue Ridge Parkway. This space is not for people who do not appreciate nature. It is in the middle of nowhere and as such we are constantly fighting back nature. We have pest control service but flies, bees and moths do live in abundance in the fields around our house. Our dog scares out the field mice but occasionally one will invade our human space. Thus is life in the rural countryside. Please adjust your expectations accordingly. Guest AccessHouse has Wi-Fi via satellite, wood-burning stove, washer/dryer and all major kitchen appliances; there is no TV. Fridge has essential condiments (ketchup, mustard) and pantry has basic seasonings and fixings for s'mores. There is a gas grill for cooking as well as a stove/oven. Kitchen also has toaster, microwave and coffee maker with coffee provided. Interaction with GuestsGuests will have the entire home. Note that we will not be in the home when the guests arrive, and as we live more than 2 hours away, we require at least 48 hours notice (sometimes more) to prep the house for a stay. Phone service on the mountain is spotty but we make every effort to be as available to you as possible, either via text or email (or phone!) The NeighborhoodThis is rural North Carolina at its finest. Most of the neighbors are related (in a good way) and either raise Christmas trees or livestock for a living. The larger area includes dozens of waterfalls, hiking, boating and tons of natural beauty. NOTE! The driveway leading to the house is steep gravel drive. Homeowners do not have a 4-wheel drive vehicle and can get up the driveway, but if you are unsure about driving your car up this type of terrain, know what you're getting into. ALSO: PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS STATED HERE. It is not advised to arrive after dark, as the roads and driveway are not lit. The home's address is correct on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps, but several local roads are not true "roads" so it is IMPERATIVE that you stick to the directions listed here. If you haven't been to the mountains of western North Carolina, know that this area is VERY remote. Phone service is spotty at best and it is VERY DARK at night. A wrong turn can lead you down a gravel road for miles. Please know your route and ask if you have any questions at all! Getting AroundFrom here, you're about 45 minutes to the nearest grocery store (Sylva, N.C.) so stop at the store before you arrive. Cars are essential. Other Things to NoteWe use this home for family getaways, and hope you find it as enjoyable as we have.
