The SpaceThis home is perfect for 2 families: each side has its own kitchen, bathroom, dining and living space along with master bedroom (queen) and other bedroom (2 twin beds in each bedroom).... perfect for bonding and entertaining with family and friends but allows for private retreats whenever you wish by an interior lockable door in between the 2 units. Rent includes both units as one house. The private association beach is 1.5 block walk along a sleepy gravel road... stunningly beautiful all seasons of the year. Shower off after a day at the beach in our large, enclosed outdoor shower, and cook on the gas grill after all-day play. Enjoy relaxing in the big, shared backyard enclosed by a fence on all sides and having a fire in our fire pit or gather around in the huge screened in porch or the inside family room to watch DirectTV or watch some of our DVDs we make available on our 48" flat screen plasma TVs. Make use of the 4 bikes (2 adult/2 child) we make available at Mar y Tierra and join in the robust cycling trails all around Harbor Country. We also offer board games, sports equipment and a variety of children's books for your use at the cottage. There is a parking pad/short driveway in front of each side of the duplex to allow for 2 cars.
The "Mar" (sea) side is decorated in a nautical theme and has one master bedroom (queen bed), one bunk room (2 twin beds), a kitchen, full bathroom, family room, and the dining space. The dining space on this side is located within the very large screened in porch and seats 4. The screened in porch also houses a lounge space with a couch and 2 arm chairs and a 48" flat screen TV.
The "Tierra" (land) side is decorated with a farm/country theme and offers a kitchen, full bathroom, inside dining room with fireplace and seating up to 8, inside family room with couch, 2 chairs, a flat screen TV with DVD player and music hook up. It also has 2 bedrooms, one with a single queen sized bed, and the other bedroom with 2 side-by-side twin beds.
The neighborhood is incredibly safe for children as the streets are gravel and drivers are scarce and drive very slow. In short, they have plenty of space to run around wild. Lakeside is the sleepier version of New (URL HIDDEN) hustle bustle but still walkable/bikeable to small grocery, restaurants, etc.
The beach is less than 1/4 mile walk and it's an association beach, which means that only residents on a few streets have access. Enjoy the 4 beach chairs we make available for your use and experience the gorgeous beaches of Harbor Country, some of the most beautiful we've ever seen (and we've seen a lot beaches!). The water is incredibly kid-friendly and is mostly flat, has a gradual deepening and often times has a sandbar that is within swimming distance. For added fun, rent a paddleboard for the day and have it delivered to and picked up from the beach; or rent or bring a kayak, rent a jet ski from the harbor in New Buffalo, only a 5 minute drive away. Don't forget that the sun sets over Lake Michigan so be sure to spend some time at the beach during sunset hours. It is unforgettable!
Dining options are plentiful... visit the relatively bustling New Buffalo and eat at famous Stray Dog or Redamak's or at other great eats there, or choose to dine even closer in Lakeside/Sawyer/Union Pier. There are microbreweries all over the area, within 5-10 minutes drive, as well as an impressive number of local wineries.
There are many small, gourmet grocery stores that are walkable, but full service grocery stores (Barney's in New Buffalo and Sawyer Garden Market in Sawyer) are within a 5-10 minute drive that offer both staples as well as organic, locally farmed food. There is also a farmer's market that is about 1 mile away (ride one of our bikes there!) that happens on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer and fall months. The produce is at its finest, I highly recommend it.
If you want other options outside of beaching it, we offer a big directory in the house with lots of different options, including a wide array of children's options. Enjoy hiking, biking, walking in the many forest preserves in the area, or go to Cap'n Mikes (a small vintage amusement park), hit golf balls at Whittaker Woods (an excellent course, highly recommended), see a movie or go to a small zoo or hit the outlet mall in Michigan City (20 min drive), go antiquing all over Harbor Country, horseback ride, pick blueberries/strawberries/apples, hit the Children's Museum and Silver Beach in St. Joseph (20 min drive), go to one of the many parks in the area, play tennis, go to Hesston (10 min drive) if you want to ride some old fashioned trains, get ice cream at famous Oinks in New Buffalo, rent a kayak and enjoy the Galien River kayak course, catch a show at the Acorn Theatre or art movies at the Vickers in Three Oaks (15 min drive), enjoy some of the local festivals like Ship and Shore and Art Attack. In the colder months, cozy up with wine and a nice fire in the fireplace at night while during the day you can ski (50 min drive), sled, cross country ski, snowmobile, ice skate all around. There is more to do here... too much to list!
