The SpaceThe History Of “The Tavern” In 1790, Henry Hinton was granted permission by the Court to build a tavern,” … 30 yards from the east door of the Court House.” By 1798, the Clerk’s Office, still standing and immediately across from the tavern, was erected. Now all of the business of the County was conducted here and the tavern was a popular stopping off place for refreshment. The building appears much as it must have so very long ago. Through the years there have been repairs, additions and modifications, but as shown in an 1809 Survey Map, it has always been a two story house. Huge hand hewn timbers are visible in the basement as the remnants of an early wine cellar. License to operate what are variously called, “tavern”, or “ordinary”, “house of entertainment”, “public house” and “Inn”, were issued to “men of good character, and not addicted to drunkenness or gaming, and that they keep orderly and useful houses of entertainment.” The Assembly regulated charges. Fixed rates in (phone number hidden), were 34 cents for a quart of Good West India Rum and Apple or Peach Toddies. Dinner with Toddy, Small Beer or Cider, 50 cents. Wines were 67 cents per quart. Lodging with clean sheets was 12 cents. Entertainment, such as Minstrel shows were occasionally offered, and a meeting place for the Mason’s. For over a hundred years the Tavern operated as a public house. For 13 years until 1894, a woman, Mrs. Sarah George, leased the tavern for $150 per year. The stipulations in the contract were that the dining room be put in good repair, the barn and attached shed newly covered and stable and front porch thoroughly repaired. This front porch added at an earlier date, but not original to the house, was finally removed in the late 1930′s when the main road was widened. Apparently Mrs. George ran a successful establishment. From a journal kept by Robert Randolph Carter of Shirley Plantation, a descendant of Robert “King” Carter, an entry dated 1886 when he made a trip to the Northern Neck, “Following the road to Lancaster Court House, we arrived at Mrs. George’s clean and cozy Inn, where we found shelter from an Easterly storm of rain and wind all night.” (1886) From 1894 until 1982, the Tavern became a private home. William and Oscar Chilton, both Clerks of the Court consecutively lived there. The building was then sold to Jeremiah O’Meara, a dentist, who converted the kitchen to a dental office. In 1982, Ann Thomas Parsons Carter bought the house and re-established it as a fine restaurant, after subsequent ownerships, continues today. When the tavern was approved in 1790, the Court deemed it “a public advantage.” We hope you will view it in the same way. Now today it is owned and operated by Ms. Brenda Lee Jackson, a King & Queen native. She attended York Academy and received a voice/music scholarship to Chowan University with a minor in Public Relations. She later became a Registered Bridal Consultant and Entrepreneur. If you have time please tour the upstairs suites and Miss Brenda reveals her grandmothers love story in the Dennis suite. The Lancaster Tavern and Sycamore tree were named to both the State and National Historic Registers of Historic Places in 1983.+ The Tavern has provided a restful spot for generations of travelers visiting the Lancaster Court House. Furnished with antiques, we offer a quiet stay in the cozy and historic setting. Breakfast is included in your room or our restaurant. We have two suites and cottage that will sleep 8 to serve you.Behind the restaurant there is a petting zoo with geese, ducks, chickens, pigs, goats and other animals guaranteed to put smiles on the faces of children. Among other things it is the birthplace of presidents like George Washington and famous people such as Thomas Lee and Robert E. Lee. The history of the "Neck" runs deep in the history of the United States, even North Amercia. Before 1600, before the first English settlement, the Northern Neck was the land between the "River of Swans" to the north and the "Quick-Rising Water" to the South, two loosely translated Indian terms for the Potomac River and the Rappahannock River. To the east lies the Chesapeake Bay, otherwise known as the "Mother of Waters", the "Great Saltwater" or the "Great Shell-fish Bay", the largest estuary in North America. Captain John Smith visited this country in 1607. He was probably one of the area's first tourists. The waters of the Potomac River, Rappahannock River, the Chesapeake Bay and their tributaries provide a haven for boaters and water enthusiasts, and have supported a fishing industry for generations. At the present, Colonial architecture, small-town charm, bed & breakfast inns, eight wineries, seventeen museums, historic sites, marinas and retail shops are among the valuable assets (email: hidden)ract visitors to the area. Just far enough away - 55 miles from Richmond, 75 miles from Washington, 80 miles from Norfolk – for you to experience the road less traveled. Visit (website: hidden) to learn more about the area.

Tucked away in the northern neck of Virginia is the quaint hamlet of Morattico which feels like a step back in time. Located along the Rappahannock river in Lancaster county it sits across Morattico creek from bell isle state park. It is rich with history. The name comes from an anglicized version of the native American tribe "moraughticund”. George Washington referred to the area as “the garden of Virginia.” Morattico was once a thriving oyster and crabbing waterfront community. The Morattico museum, located beside this home, was once the old general store and now shows the love and pride of the citizens and days gone by. Each room is adorned by local history exhibits showing the past centuries of the village and providing vacationers a treasure hunt during their stay. Visit their website to see all the activities from oyster fests to live music and antique car shows. This charming home is almost completely surrounded by water views. It delights in beautiful sunrises over the water while sipping your morning beverage. Listen to the sounds of the birds and water. You won’t believe it is a river because it experiences tide changes and salt water wildlife. This two level home has 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths with overhead fans. The first level offers the privacy of 2 separated bedrooms each with views of the water. One room has a double bed and the other is set up with bunk beds and has a full size mattress on the bottom which allows total accommodations for 3 people in the room. There is also a large full bathroom on the lower level. The upper level is designed with an open concept living space and boasts of a large kitchen with island and bar and separate dining room. Access to a full size washer and dryer for washing all those towels after water sports! The family room has comfortable leather sofa that opens to sleep 2 additional people, perfect for those nights of family time. The master bedroom has a queen bed and is surrounded by a deck to encourage those romantic nights with a glass of wine under the stars and moonlight! There are 2 additional decks; one on the front where you can watch the sunrise and spend hours reading and watching the water and birds. The back deck provides shade for the hot times of the day. The yard is fenced in around the back. There is a boat dock that can be used for fishing, swimming or just sitting. A small sandy beach allows for shell sea glass collecting. If you are the adventurous type easily accessible is belle island state park that rents features picnic facilities, public boat landing, canoes, motor boat rentals, free concerts, and nature trails. Kilmarnock and other local cities provide shopping and dining opportunities. There are also many interesting historical attractions are nearby. The home does not have a telephone. Eagles’ Retreat has a 6,239 square foot story!! We wanted to create the feeling of “warmth, togetherness and classy informality” and remain connected to the great outdoors. It worked! As you enter the great room, the first thing you’ll be drawn to is the amazing view of the lake through the French doors and large windows spanning the entire wall. You’ll immediately want to walk onto the balcony, but you stop because to your left is a stately stone wood/gas log fireplace rising up to the vaulted ceiling. A rustic wood mantle makes a statement – you are home in the country. Live it. Be it. To the right is a large bay-window dining area with gorgeous views of the woods, lake and balcony. No more formal dining room. Never again! Why? Because the floor plan promotes conversation, creates togetherness, and encourages connectedness. You’ll put Facebook away. Your friends and family gatherings will span from the living area to the dining and right into the large kitchen. Everyone has space; plenty of room for individual conversations, but you are all still together. The custom cabinet kitchen was designed for functionality and lots of people, cooking, and storage. For large families hosting holiday meals, the island is perfect for a massive buffet. We mean massive. Features: Custom built cabinets, including: Spice cabinet 5 drawer pull-out pantry Pull-out pots/pans drawers Island with power, drawers, baskets, trash cabinet Loads of cabinet space Computer/work station with hidden printer cabinet Advantium and conventional oven Gas stove Dishwasher Trash compactor Large windows at the sink with a view of the front yard Attached to the Kitchen/Dinning area, but separate is the "Guest Quarters. This is a perfect place to house your young adults, guests, or in-laws. Complete with a kitchen, this studio has an elevated view of the lake and a serene, country atmosphere. (The kitchen serves as an overflow parties in which you need a second refrigerator and/or stove!) On the Lower Level you will find the Man Cave/Trophy Room/ Family Room: Designed for deer and fish trophies, this spacious family room has the feel of a man cave, but the warmth of a family room with knotty pine wainscoting. It’s your pick! On one end is a wood-stove and the other end is an entertainment center with surround sound. We have seven locally killed deer in this room including the two-color piebald deer. Large Andersen windows and an Andersen glass sliding door look out to the pool area which overlooks the lake. Wreck Room: Hours of fun are yours in this wreck room currently housing a ping-pong table. Because details matter, we opened the side entrance with a glass sliding door so that wet feet from the pool can bypass the carpeted family room and traverse to the bathroom on ceramic tile. In the case you’d rather convert this room into an office – beware! The view is stunning and you might not get much work done. There is also another bedroom and large full bath on this level.Tucked away from the activity is bedroom #4 with a full spacious bathroom with ceramic tile floors. Fun For The Whole Family: Lounge by the 20’ x 40’ pool which overlooks the lake. The upkeep is minimal because of the salt-generated chlorine system. While the kids play off the diving board, relax in your favorite chair on the stamped concrete. The entire pool area is landscaped with plants that love the sun and white rocks. The Loft: It’s secluded. It’s your library. It’s your quiet space to rock your grandchildren to sleep overlooking the greatroom’s stone fireplace. Plenty of room to build custom bookshelves and craft this space into your dream hideaway. The Property!!! 60 hard wood acres. . . a lake with bass fish. . . deep protected water on the Corrotoman River. . . abundant wildlife. . .privacy, privacy, privacy. . . more abundant wildlife. . . and a quick 13- minute drive into town. We know, though, it will be perfect for the right family because of its uniqueness and an amazing place to make memories that last forever. We believe it has something for everyone. We’re not just saying that. Fresh water fishing, salt water fishing, kayaking, water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, wildlife at a daily level most people never get to experience and best of all – tranquility. Peace like you wouldn’t believe exists just 124 miles from Northern Virginia. Welcome to Eagles’ Retreat where you, your family and your friends will live life abundantly. THE LAKE!! Hardwoods and mountain laurel wrap around this fresh-water bass stocked lake creating what has to be one of the most peaceful settings in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Fish from the floating dock or john boat or . . . just sit and be still. This is nature at its finest. It never disappoints. Many times you can see a pair of eagles leave their nest and fly out to the river around 8 A.M. or bathe their wings at the end of the day while perched on a floating log. Prior to fledging, the young cry out for food as the female swoops in with a fish in her talons. During fledging season, the brown-headed eaglets can be seen practicing their first flights over the lake and landing in the trees. Some summers, great blue herons build rookeries (nests) at the top of trees overlooking the lake which makes for a fascinating and prehistoric-looking encounter as they lift their heads and necks above the tree line. The excitement doesn’t end when the sun goes down. It is not unusual to hear otters and beavers splashing along with a chorus of amazing frogs. Lastly, if you take a late night kayak float, don’t forget to look up! The stars are extra bright and smiling down on you. This is living abundantly in tranquility. It is good for you, your family and your friendships. THE RIVER!! The River, The Patio & Pier Hop on the golf cart and in about 55 seconds, you’ll be overlooking the eastern branch of the Corrotoman River on your waterfront property. This is the moment when you fully realize that Eagles’ Retreat offers the “best of both worlds.” It’s quite literally 2 for 1. The 14,000 pound boat lift accommodates a large boat and the jet ski lift is ready to be lowered into the river. Hours and hours of fun are in store for you for pulling your children and friends tubing, waterskiing, wakeboarding or a quick trip to a sandy beach just around the bend. You’ll love not having to worry about protecting your boats from the weather. This property has 61/2 – 7 feet mean low water – perfect for sailboats or powerboats – and a protected cove. The pier has running water and electricity. For those late night returns, the pier has accent lighting and on/off switches at the top and bottom of the steps. The Corrotoman River is not a busy river at all. Many times in the evening you may be the only boat in sight; however, it is loaded with excitement on the holiday weekends because the Eastern Branch is a destination point for water travelers. Boaters come from across the Chesapeake Bay to anchor in “The Hole

The first thing we loved about this property was that it is built right at the water's edge. Like 20 feet close. So close you could almost fish from the deck. Chesapeake Bay Act protections do not allow building this close any longer. This gives you a birds eye view of the fascinating wildlife who make their home along the pristine Corrotoman River, a favorite for sailboaters and fishing fanatics, as well. You'll find the Fish Tales Lodge is "elegantly rustic" as a recent guest said. It has all the trimmings you'd expect of an English fishing lodge set right on the water amid towering trees, yet at the end of the driveway are community amenities such as a saltwater swimming pool, tennis-pickleball courts, outdoor ping-pong, playground, par 3 golf and more. The house is completely equipped down to the last spoon, so your transformation from your busy life to your cherished vacation time is as carefree as possible. Can't be too disconnected? No problem, Fish Tales has hi-speed wi-fi and cable TV which you can enjoy on four TVs, two of which are sixty inch!
