We are within easy traveling distance of Melbourne's many attractions, the historic gold mining cities of Bendigo & Ballarat. Daylesford, Castlemaine & Kyneton's antique & collectables shops are havens & a must for those that like to rummage through items of the past. From our farm ‘Lemah Park’ panoramic views can be seen of the Macedon Ranges, Hanging Rock and the glorious panorama over the Deep Creek valley to the Cobaw Ranges. Sunnyside Cottage was restored in 2010 & consists of one bedroom, with queen sized bed, bathroom, full kitchen & dining area, lounge with a 3 seater couch which converts to a large sofa bed & a 2 seater couch, fire place and flat screen TV. A large outdoor deck (with BBQ) to sit out on to admire the views over the valley & if you are lucky, view a few kangaroos or hear the koala's down by the creek. The cottage is available for Bed & Breakfast and or self-catered short or long stays. Optional breakfast provisions for two, $20 per day. Our weekend package requires a two night minimum stay ($420), with provisions for a cooked breakfast including a loaf of fresh baked home made bread supplied each morning. Interaction with GuestsThe main house is close by if we are required, but otherwise the guests can have all the privacy they want. We are happy to chat & supply information when called upon. Local wineries & breweries, antiques & collectable stores are within a 20km radius. Walking tracks in the Macedon Ranges, Hanging Rock to climb, cycling are a few of the many activities available. Many local markets at weekends are popular, especially the farmers markets for fresh, local produce. At the end of the day it is lovely to retreat back to the cottage & enjoy the scenic panorama, peace & tranquility, from your seat on the verandah (deck), with a pleasant drink in hand. Getting AroundA car is required, as the cottage is on a beef farming property, within 4kms of the local general store/cafe & 11kms from the nearest town. Other Things to NoteSunnyside Cottage is situated on a working farm means at certain times of the year we have the added interest of newly born calves on view. We produce our own hay, so when the season is right the tractors & machinery can be seen down on the pastures producing the bales of hay. The SpaceLife at SkyHouse Mount Macedon This is self-contained country accommodation at its best. The house is yours for as long as you choose; most necessities are provided including lavish bedding, pantry essentials, games, books, CDs, DVDs, kitchen equipment to cook up a storm, LCD TV and Blu-Ray DVD (it’s a PlayStation too!) and a gas-fired barbie to enjoy evenings outdoors. All you have to do is scour the area for the region’s famous food and wine provisions. Here’s a quick rundown on what you’ll find at SkyHouse Mount Macedon. UPSTAIRS We have two bedrooms upstairs and they are similar in size and feel. Choose from a distinctly French-Provincial style bedroom or one with modern zing and a “Mr Curly” bed. Naturally, both have a fluffy doona, pure wool blanket, loads of pillows and storage space. They also both have soaring cathedral ceilings and large picture windows framing the outside bush. Fall asleep to the sounds of mopokes calling in the night, then wake to sun streaming through the gum trees. We also have an intimate little sunroom upstairs with its own wisteria-draped balcony, outdoor setting and a terrific view across to Hanging Rock. DOWNSTAIRS Downstairs is our third bedroom, which is great for kids, extra guests or non stair-climbers. With its two single beds and easy bathroom access, the emphasis of this room is more on cuteness than romance, and takes the total bed space up to six. Lounge and dining Open plan living is relaxed and casual, but dripping with SkyHouse style. Comfy couches and armchairs are surrounded by picture windows, the polished floorboards glow with warmth, and the wood-fired heater is perfect for those crisp mountain winter nights (or there’s air conditioning for when summer warms up). Electronic entertainment is provided by hi-def LCD TV, PlayStation 3 (BYO your favourite games) with Blu-Ray DVD player and a stereo with iPod dock. The dining table (seats eight) is a few steps from the kitchen and seriously tempts cooks to whip up a feast. Kitchen Is there a kitchen in the Macedon region with a better view? SkyHouse’s open plan kitchen overlooks the wisteria-clad verandah, and then onwards to Hanging Rock. Timber benchtops and country cupboards combine with gas cooktop and dishwasher to make your stay nourishing as well as relaxing. Pantry basics are provided and, of course, all the tools and cookware you will need. Bathroom There’s a clawfoot bath with a BIG showerhead, toilet in a separate room and enough space to dolly-up before heading out for a day at the wineries, or a night at any number of great local restaurants. Outdoors Two verandahs face the view or the garden and there’s a gas BBQ for outdoor cooks. Choose your own dining locations for breakfast, lunch and dinner – the sunny table in the garden or the shaded verandah setting? And we have lots of lovely sunny and shady spots in the garden, not to mention extensive rock walls (the background feature of our website). Mini Sport Oval Want to try the SkyHouse Mount Macedon version of Sundowners? Grab a bottle of wine and head down to the mini sports oval for a game of pétanque while the sun sets over Hanging Rock and the cockatoos shout encouragement from above. Wildlife at SkyHouse Mount Macedon Mount Macedon is a regional park clothed in native forest but also home to quite a number of human residents drawn by the peace and beauty. That means they co-exist happily with the local fauna, of which there is plenty. It is not unusual to see the quiet, almost meditative wallabies on bush tracks, while at night you might get a tank-like wombat wandering past. There are also echidnas and koalas, the occasional eastern grey kangaroo seeking sanctuary from nearby farming land and at night you might spot various possums, bats and other smaller nocturnal mammals. Birds are also very happy with the abundant bushland and budding ornithologists can spend an hour or two on SkyHouse’s verandahs counting and listing local species flitting in and out of the bushes and flowerbeds – we even have binoculars and bird guides to get you started. There are plenty of crimson rosellas, kookaburras and cockatoos, plus treecreepers, wattle birds, honey eaters and more. In the morning, Edgar Allan (a glossy black currawong that seems to have adopted us) will most likely tap politely on the kitchen window looking for breakfast. SkyHouse Mount Macedon Macedon Ranges (near Woodend) Victoria, Australia SkyHouse is only 50 minutes from Melbourne, yet secluded in a tranquil bushland setting. Close by is Woodend (which features fabulous cafes, restaurants, shops and two great pubs), the village of Mount Macedon and the mystical Hanging Rock. 15 minutes away is Kyneton with its two one-hat restaurants. There are numerous cellar doors within an easy drive and lots of lovely bushwalks from SkyHouse itself. Guest AccessGuests will have full run of the house, with 3 beautiful bedrooms and a lovely bathroom with old fashioned claw foot bath. The kitchen is well appointed with all basic pantry items supplied Interaction with GuestsThere is no interaction from the host with guests, as the house is fully self contained and rented out as such The NeighborhoodIf you aren’t already familiar with the Macedon Ranges region the best place to start is at the official tourism site. But here are some of our tips for the Macedon Ranges region – and they are all within easy striking distance of SkyHouse. Sightseeing If you are actually staying on Mt Macedon, why not start with a look around? There are plenty of walking tracks, including the great view from the Camel’s Hump, or drive and then stroll to the summit. Visit the township of Mt Macedon itself (the Trading Post is a nice place for breakfast, light lunches and even dinner) and some of the great mansions there have open gardens that are quite different to the rest of Victoria thanks to the altitude and the spending ability of their founders. Surrounding towns include Gisborne, Lancefield, Riddells Creek, Romsey and Sunbury. Each is different in its own way but well worth having a look at if you are into galleries, cafes, colonial rural architecture and wineries. You are also not far from Daylesford (about 30 minutes). The perfect day trip? Head to Daylesford via Trentham, see the sights, enjoy a luxurious spa treatment at Hepburn Springs and browse the galleries before heading back to Mt Macedon and SkyHouse. Wineries We love the local wineries, many of which are only minutes away from SkyHouse. The area specialises in cold-climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which means there’s great sparkling as well. But the ever-inventive local winemakers will give anything a crack, and many source Shiraz from the nearby Heathcote area for some hefty reds. Our favourite local cellar doors include: Hanging Rock, Mount Macedon and Hesket Estate wineries but there are many more. A little further afield we reckon Curly Flat (near Lancefield), Knights Granite Hills, Paramoor and Cobaw Ridge are among the best but grab one of the maps we provide and see for yourself or go to (URL HIDDEN) for a list. Eating Out The idea of having your own house to stay in is to make use of the excellent kitchen, the barbecue and the indoor and outdoor dining areas. Not to mention scouring the region for some of Victoria’s best wine and produce. But there are also plenty of restaurants and cafes around, especially in Woodend and Kyneton. Here are a few of our favourites. Woodend Schatzi’s features hearty cooking, big helpings and specific gluten-free options. The Victoria Hotel has a nice atmosphere, especially for families, with outdoor seating for summer. Café Colenso behind the antique shop in the side street next to the Holgate Brewhouse. Takes some discovering, but it’s like an old farmhouse in the middle of town. Holgate Brewhouse (Keatings Hotel) has a great bar menu and loungeroom style furniture. Beer lovers can try a six-glass degustation of the brews that are brewed on site, or get straight into a pint off the menu. Campaspe House – the restaurant has some truly inspired French-style dining. Maloa House Gourmet Delights does a ripper breakfast, nice lunches, great coffee, tea and cakes. Doubles as a furniture/homewares/edible produce store as well. Kyneton is also pretty famous and only 15 minutes north of Woodend. Restaurants to check include: the Royal George Hotel has an exceptional looking bar and restaurant, then there’s Pizza Verde, Annie Smithers and Star Anise. Head straight for the world-famous Piper Street and its historical precinct – you can’t go wrong. There was an extensive article in the Epicure section of The Age on Kyneton an Piper Street in October 2009. Markets and regional events Go to the official calendar and the markets and plan your visit to SkyHouse Mount Macedon – everything is nice and close! If you are actually staying on Mt Macedon, why not start with a look around? There are plenty of walking tracks, including the great view from the Camel’s Hump, or drive and then stroll to the summit. Visit the township of Mt Macedon itself (the Trading Post is a nice place for breakfast, light lunches and even dinner) and some of the great mansions there have open gardens that are quite different to the rest of Victoria thanks to the altitude and the spending ability of their founders. The SpaceWanderlust was build in 2010 and was designed to take full advantage of the spectacular views over Hanging Rock. When you wake up in the master bedroom or one of the two bedrooms (one double room and one single room with trundle), Hanging Rock is there to wow you. The kitchen and dining area features a large window which frames the view fantastically and the large sliding doors from the living area lead you to a large deck where you can relax and enjoy the sounds from the forest, gaze at the stars and off course catch another view of the Rock. The down stairs area has another bedroom with a queen size bed and there is a small lounge room. Both these rooms have sliding doors leading to the lower garden. From the kitchen you can keep an eye on the chickens and the veggie patch. You are free to take some of the produce in the vegetable garden or eggs from the chickens. The only thing we ask you is to feed the chickens and lock them up at night. We are frequently visited by kangaroos, wallabies and kookaburra's. Occasionally you can encounter an echidna or a wombat or hear the mating call of a koala in the forest. Also spectacular are the wedge tailed eagles soaring overhead looking for prey. Unfortunately there are also some foxes who have a keen eye on the chickens. The house is heated with a large fire box and the hydronic heating system keeps the whole house warm and cozy. There are two bedrooms with queen size beds and one bedroom with a double bed and one room with single bed plus trundle. The master bedroom has an en-suite with shower and the main bathroom has a shower and a large bath. Guest AccessAll linen and towels Fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher; Gas barbecue All the wood you need for heating the house Washing machine Fresh eggs from the chickens. The NeighborhoodWanderlust is located in the forest on Mount Macedon. There are some fantastic short walks that for instance lead you through the forest to the Camels Hump. A 10 km walk return brings you to the Cross on Mount Macedon or if you are keen you can walk the Macedon Ranges Walking Track which is around 20 km's. If you are a keen cyclist then Mount Macedon road and Straws lane will get your heart pumping. Mount Macedon village is a 6 kilometer drive. The local pub in Mount Macedon has great meals and has a cozy bar and a great outdoor beer garden. Woodend is also 6 km away and has some nice restaurants, bars and shops. The nearest supermarket and petrol station is in Woodend. Other places to go are Trentham (Metropolitan hotel) and Kyneton with its many beautiful restaurants in famous Piper Street. Of course you will have to climb hanging rock or visit one of the many wineries in the region. Getting AroundThe house can be easily reached from the Calder freeway or you can take the train to Woodend on the Bendigo line and call a cab to take you from the station to our house.
