The NeighborhoodMilang is a great base to explore the Langhorne Creek wineries, indulge in water activities on the lake or simply take some time to relax. It began life in 1854 as a river boat port on Lake Alexandrina to service the surrounding farmland as far inland as Strathalbyn and Callington. ( about 30km). Its life blood was all activity connected with the Paddle Steamers which plied the thousands of kilometres of the Murray and Darling Rivers from Goolwa to Bourke and Albury. In its heyday, Milang boasted boat building and repair yards and a number of substantial commercial premises erected by the trade barons of the day. For many years until the Intercolonial Railway was completed in the 1880s, Milang was on the main land route from Adelaide to Melbourne. Passengers and mail came by coach to Milang, took a steamer across the Lakes to Meningie and continued by coach via the Coorong to the port of Robe, thence to Melbourne via Hamilton and Colac, a total journey of some 5 to 8 days. In January each year, over 400 sailing boats converge on Milang for the Milang to Goolwa Classic, Australia's largest freshwater race. Most "overnight" in nearby reeds before the race and competitors and locals alike are treated to a spectacular sight and carnival atmosphere. Getting AroundAn easy 15 min drive from Strathalbyn and just under 15 mins to the beautiful Langhorne Creek wineries, Milang is best enjoyed on foot once you arrive. The shop is easy walking distance to the bakery, pub, lake, tennis courts, bowling green, general store, café, chemist and the Milang Railway Museum. The Nurragi Conservation Reserve walk along the old railway track will take you through to Sandergrove. Other Things to NoteOnsite secure storage for kayaks/wind surfing gear can be negotiated with owner.

Located 105 km south-east of Adelaide, Wellington is a small settlement on the banks of the River Murray. Like Tailem Bend, prior to European settlement the area around Wellington was home to the Ngarrindjeri people. They made bark and reed canoes and lived on the fish and the animals which came to the riverbank. Following Captain Charles Sturt the whole area along the Murray was opened up by overlanders who moved sheep and cattle across the land. It was the colonial land developer, John Morphett, who saw Wellington's potential. By1839 Wellington had become one of the most important settlements on the Murray. The ferry (which was established that year) and the town became the only point where traffic could cross the Murray. On the northern side of the Wellington Ferry you'll discover the beautifully restored Pangarinda Arboretum.Perfect for natural lovers and birdwatchers its a great place to see how nature can be restored to a damaged envrionment. Just an hour's drive from Adelaide, Monartois home to the largest open range zoo in Australia. Across more than 1,500 hectares, see giraffes, rhinos and chimpanzees (just to name a few). The animals can be viewed from either the walking trails or regular shuttle bus. Hike, bird watch and picnic within the Ngarkart Conseravtion Park. Explore and find some of the 120 native bird species, included are the yellow-tailed black cockatoos and honeyeaters. Enjoy a lovely picnic with local produce or even hike to Tyms Lookout. Cruises range in length from one hour to a seven night break down the river. Day Tour Cruises stop regularly at points along the river for on-shore guided walks to secluded lagoons, national parks or indigenous sites. Hire a canoe or kayak and paddle your way through the secluded backwaters of the Murray River. For the adventurous, speed-boating, jet-skiing and water-skiing are always fun pursuits. Famous for wild-caught Coorong Mullet this region also produces cheeses, great wines and virgin olive oil and other artisan food products. One of Australias most iconic parks, the Coorong, is a 130 kilometre expanse of saltwater lagoons and striking scenery. To fully appreciate the Coorongs magic, hit the walking trails, paddle, kayak or four wheel drive (4WD) along designated tracks to unspoilt places.
