The SpacePapa’aloa is a sleepy little town along the beautiful Hamakua Coast, just 24 miles north of Hilo. We have a perfectly sunny climate with refreshing trade winds and just enough rain; usually between 68-78 degrees. You will be surrounded by a tropical garden on a quarter acre of land rich in banana trees, mangos, lychee, oranges and lemons. You can wander around the yard, lounge under the majestic lychee tree, enjoy the tropical fruit trees, the aroma of orange blossoms, and the orchestra of birds. Your Studio is a separate building in front of the main house, 10 x 20’ with a fully equipped kitchenette, a queen-size bed, a small private bathroom and your own outdoor sitting area. Since it's a long (20') narrow (10') space, just pulling the curtain at the center gives you the option of having two separate rooms. Also you will have access to the main lanai with a grand sweeping view of the ocean . This space is ideal for one or two people. You can start your mornings with free fruit such as papayas or mangos and bananas—as well as Kona coffee and tea (black and herbal). Personally, I like to cut a papaya in half, remove the seeds, slice in a banana and squeeze some lemon juice on top. Yum! This is a smoke-free zone. (If you must smoke, please take a walk away from the house.) Guest AccessIn nearby Laupahoehoe is an Olympic-size free swimming pool, tennis courts, library, gas station, post office and convenience store. The Papaaloa Country Store is just 3 blocks away (at the bottom of Papaaloa Ave), and they also have a restaurant. Hours are 6-6, M-Sa. Other shopping can be done in Hilo or Honokaa, both of which are 1/2 hour from here. Interaction with GuestsI will respect your privacy while offering warm hospitality. There's no need to interact unless we all want to. I'm usually available when guests have questions or concerns or want to talk story. I've lived on the island for 17 years and I know my way around. The NeighborhoodI am about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum. The house is in a friendly Filipino neighborhood, high on the hill above the ocean. This is an excellent central location, just 15 minutes from dramatic Laupahoehoe Point where you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the rocks. It’s a half hour drive south to Hilo along the coast, past the lush valleys and waterfalls. There are lots of fun restaurants and places to shop in Hilo, with much less vog (smog from the volcano) than in Kona. Past Hilo you can swim at Richardson Beach, among the lava rocks. Or you can drive north a half hour to historic Honokaa with its restored old-fashioned movie theatre, and a little further North to the lush Waipeo Valley. Or turn west from Honokaa and another half hour will take you to the town of Waimea with a brewery and more restaurants and galleries. Or go up Saddle Road to the world class observatory on Mauna Kea (bring a set of warm clothes for that trip!). Getting AroundYou will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19. Other Things to NoteThere is WiFi as well as a TV with basic cable and a DVD/CD player and a collection of DVDs. There is a landline with free phone calls to Canada and the US. There is decent cell phone coverage if you have AT&T, but other cell phones tend to have intermittent reception. You will have access to the washing machine, dryer and clothesline. It’s usually quiet and peaceful here, with plenty of local color with the occasional roosters and sheep and coqui frogs. In the late afternoons, the children enjoy playing in the street. On occasion, the neighbors’ hunting dogs get excited, especially when the wild boar wander down from the hills. I provide earplugs and a white noise machine. If you are traveling with others, there is also a guest room with a Queen bed inside the main house. It has a view of the ocean and I rent it out occasionally, for the same price. Inquire about availability. By the way, I am a Vibrational Healer and the author of 16 books on holistic healing. You can find me, Joy Gardner, on the Web if you want to learn more about the other healing services that I offer. There are also good masseurs in the area, including LomiLomi Hawaiian massage, for $60 hr. If you wish, I can refer you to a masseur who would come to the Studio, for no extra charge. This is a "green" facility. All cleaning products are nontoxic. The linen is 100% cotton. The garden is organic. There's a fully-equipped kitchen and a full-size refrigerator. Pots and pans are non-aluminum. There's also a blender and a juicer. There are leftover containers and a cooler and ice packets. There are a couple of beach chairs and extra beach towels. Extra pillows and linen and towels are available as needed. You'll have your own outdoor table with an umbrella. You're welcome to pick your own fruit when the trees are producing: bananas, papayas, mangos, lychee, lemons, oranges, tangerines. I'm on 1/4 acre of land; please feel free to wander around and enjoy it. The nightly rate includes the 4% GET (General Excise Tax) and the 9.25% TAT (Transient Accommodations Tax) that we have to pay.

The SpaceOn Papaaloa Rd, just above Papaaloa Ave, my recently purchased 11 acre property on a gentle slope above town has a 180 degree view of the Pacific Ocean. My 14 horses are in pasture fronting the large airy home, which has large windows throughout for the light & the views. (Riding is a possibility.) There are 3 friendly German Shepherds in the yard; cats & birds live upstairs. There is 1 large room available on the first floor. It is set up as a large studio, with an attached veranda (with great pasture & ocean views). There are kitchen appliances, hot plates, microwave, coffee maker et al. There are 2 queen beds, dining table & chairs, as well a TV that plays VHS tapes or DVDs. It has its own bath and a twin bed on the attached side porch, which is screened in. An extra twin bed can be set up in the room if needed. The Base price for room double occupancy is $95 per night. I'm required by the state to charge 14.2% in TAT and GET taxes per night. Base nightly cost is therefore $109, based on 2 people. A larger group will pay $30 extra per person (plus taxes). Guests are welcome to breakfast or dine al fresco on the lanai (veranda) where they can enjoy the awesome views of the ocean & the gentle breezes. Near sunset, there are sometimes fabulous rainbows in the eastern sky. Bring your cameras! I own TC Bey Cedar, the stallion who portrayed Al Hattal in "Hidalgo" (race favorite belonging to Omar Sharif's character). The movie is available to view on DVD. And perhaps you'd like a photo with a 'movie star'. As noted by other offers in the area, we are located about midway between Hilo & Honokaa or Waimea. Akaka Falls is above the cute tourist town of Honomu, and zipline adventures are offered there & elsewhere. Nearby Laupahoehoe Point is a picturesque park on the ocean. The 50's Café closed recently, and was our only place to gather, but a new place is expected to open in early 2015. There is a well-maintained public swimming pool quite near as well. Best to bring groceries with you on arrival, or you can pick up food and gas at the nearby Minit Stop. Guests are advised to get a rental vehicle, but if one chooses, there is an island bus system which utilizes the highway below my place. Each bedroom is $95 per night, based on double occupancy. Extra guests are $30 each per night. Folks have told me this house has a "million dollar view" and I won't argue, as I fell in love with that first & then the house. :-) One needn't be an animal lover, but my pets are a big draw if you are. Come experience paradise! Guest AccessParking fronting the house, all amenities in the room. Entrance & exits on front & back porches. Interaction with GuestsDepends; I will take them to visit the horses in pasture, or possibly saddle horses and take them riding if they desire. The NeighborhoodEverything--the weather, the views, the peace & quiet. Occasionally livestock make a bit of noise, but not much. Good neighbors; not too close, which is nice. Getting AroundThe Hele On bus travels both directions on Highway 19 at regular intervals. Rental vehicles are recommended for convenience, though. Other Things to NoteDogs are curious and friendly. If they surround you, just push them out of the way with your knee, saying firmly, "Move!"

The SpaceLaupahoehoe is an old plantation town from the days when sugar cane dominated Big Island agriculture. What's left is a string of small towns strung along the emerald green Hamakua Coast. From our blue house you can drive 30 minutes south along the coast to Hilo for shopping, kayaking in Hilo Bay, and snorkeling at Richardson Park. Going north along the coast will take you to historic Honoka'a (about a 25 minute drive) where you can check out old downtown before peeling off to nearby Waipio Valley, a scenic wonder you can explore by foot, horseback, or by horse drawn wagon. On the way back, be sure to stop at the TEX Cafe in Honoka'a for the malasadas (scrumptious Portuguese donuts). About 45 minutes north from the house is Waimea, the town in the mists of the Kohala Mountains famous for cool nights, the Cherry Festival, and pancakes the size of hubcaps at the Hawaiian Style Cafe. Other places within easy driving distance from Hale Polu are: Umauma zip line -10 minutes, Akaka Falls - 15 minutes, Kohala's white sand beaches (Mauna Kea Beach, Hapuna Beach) - 1 hour, and Volcanoes National Park - 1 hour, 15 min. Or you could just stay home at Hale Polu, open all the windows, and read a good book with the Pacific Trade Winds wafting through the house. And remember, our kitchen is fully equipped and ready for you to apply your culinary talents to the locally grown foods you can find at local farmers markets. E komo mai (welcome). Hale Polu is one of eight homes on a private street, all on large lots with great separation for peace and quiet. The neighbors are friendly and not obtrusive. Note: We have Direct TV cable service and a TV with built-in DVD. We also have a high speed wi-fi internet connection for laptops, tablets and mobile devices. Cell phone service is excellent for most providers. This is a newly furnished house with brand new queen beds, sleeper sofa, linens, towels, dining set, kitchen ware, microwave and living room furniture. Guest AccessThe entire house, including all three bedrooms (if there are more than two guests), two bathrooms, living room, dining area and kitchen. There is also an enclosed garage with parking for one vehicle. Interaction with GuestsWe have a manager located locally to address any needs you may have The NeighborhoodOur house is in a quiet, well maintained neighborhood in Laupahoehoe. We have a large property with expansive lawns and many fruits trees. Laupahoehoe is 30 minutes away from Hilo and a little over an hour from Kona. The house is on the beautiful Hamakua Coast near Akaka Falls and the spectacular Waipio Valley. Getting AroundA rental car is really the only practical way to get around the Big Island. There is limited public transit but it is scheduled mostly for people getting to and from work in the Kona resorts. The SpaceThis is ideal for people who want to get out and adventure and then come home to complete creature comfort. It is conveniently located to the island belt road for travel. Guest AccessOne of the coolest features of our neighborhood is our wonderful neighbor who has offered for a fee the service of her solar heated, saline pool and hot tub. You can take swim classes with her, rent the pool and tub for family play time or sign up for one of her awesome spin classes. (Contact info given upon request with booking.) Or try our neighborhood free county pool for lap swim or free swim with the kids. A small walk to the cliff edge (cautiously) for a veiw of a raging 200 waterfall that plunges into the ocean, a long time used fishing pier and whales in the winter time. Interaction with GuestsWe can point you in many right directions, hook you up in with in-house or day spa massage, guided tours, paragliding and childcare. Please let me know how I can help. The NeighborhoodEveryone here knows each other so feel free to greet neighbors and they might even invite you over for a drink or talk story. Getting AroundThere is a island wide bus service walking distance to the studio. Other Things to NoteSince we have the country store next door there is activity from early in the morning all day. Sound is pretty muffled and you will feel a sanctuary vibe inside the studio. For additional sound suppression for the sensitive, run the AC.

The SpaceThis cute A-frame house comfortably sleeps up to 6, with 2 Queen beds, 2 twin airbeds and 2 full-size futon couches (one is on the lanai). It features a beautiful lanai (porch) on the main floor with a sweeping ocean view and a Zen-style master bedroom upstairs, with French doors opening onto a private lanai (deck), also with a sweeping view of the ocean. There is also a bedroom downstairs with a view of the ocean. Fully-equipped kitchen with free Kona coffee and tea (black and herbal). Rentals are only for one week. All prices include 4% GET and 9.25% transient accommodation tax (total of 13.25). Guest AccessThe town of Laupahoehoe, just 5 minutes away, has an Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, library, gas station, post office and convenience store. On Sunday mornings there is a sweet little public market with plenty of fresh fruit. Interaction with GuestsOwner will be down south, so basically no interaction except by email and phone. There is also a Studio on the same property, but completely separate from the main house, which will probably be rented to someone else (it sleeps two), but if interested, you can inquire about availability there also. The NeighborhoodIt’s usually quiet and peaceful in Papaaloa, with plenty of local color with the occasional roosters and sheep and coqui frogs. In the late afternoons, the children enjoy playing in the street. On occasion, the neighbors’ hunting dogs get excited, especially when the wild boar wander down from the hills. There is free parking in the carport and it's a very safe neighborhood. This is an excellent central location, just 30 minutes north of Hilo along the coast, past the lush valleys and waterfalls. There are lots of fun restaurants and places to shop in Hilo, with much less vog (smog from the volcano) than in Kona. The house is just 15 minutes from dramatic Laupahoehoe Point where you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the rocks. Going south, the house is about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum. Or you can drive north a half hour to historic Honokaa with its restored old-fashioned movie theatre, and a little further North to the lush Waipeo Valley. Or turn west from Honokaa and another quarter hour will take you to the town of Waimea with a brewery and more restaurants and galleries. Or go up Saddle Road to the world class observatory on Mauna Kea (bring a set of warm clothes for that trip!). A half hour past Waimea will bring you to some of the world’s finest white sands beaches at Mauna Kea and Hapuna, where there is excellent snorkeling and the sun almost always shines. Getting AroundYou will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 Hele-On bus that runs occasionally. There is a steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19. Other Things to NoteThere is WiFi as well as a collection of DVDs. There is a landline with free phone calls to the US and Canada. There is decent cell phone coverage if you have AT&T, but other cell phones tend to have intermittent reception. You will have access to the washing machine, dryer and clothesline. There are good masseurs in the area, including LomiLomi Hawaiian massage, for $60 hr., and I can put you in touch with them. This is a "green" facility. All cleaning products are nontoxic. The linen is 100% cotton. The yard is organic.

Our working farm has a few animals (horses, cows, dogs, cat, chickens, geese), with sounds of early morning crowing roosters, cattle mooing at night, and sometimes farm equipment operates (usually after 7am). Let us know when you arrive if you have special circumstances (late arrival) that would require us to start farm equipment operations a little later (like 9am!). Being tropical, you may see geckos on the lanai, wall or floor or hear a few coqui or tropical birds. Aside from possible nighttime mosquitos, we are unaware of any creatures of concern. If you are a light sleeper, plan ahead. Many find the tropical and farm sounds relaxing. ++ BEDROOM/LIVING SPACE Queen bed Cotton sheets Full-size couch Extra blankets, pillows and throws Large rocking chair Armoire with hangers Floor lamps French press, coffee and tea bags Full wall picture windows Shoji doors open onto the screened-in Lanai Floor rugs Mosquito netting around bed (just in case) Reading material - paperback books available DVD selection (for laptop viewing) ++ COVERED ATTACHED OUTDOOR BATHROOM Accessible from inside your room. Guests normally might also have access to the small cabin close to the 200-foot water fall on the other side of the property (just ask). The cabin has a lanai/deck with an unobstructed ocean view. It's a quiet place to "hang out." (Note, please let your host know of any special needs and if we can accommodate them we will do our best) Interaction with GuestsOwners are in the main house and maintain the orchard. We look forward to meeting you and are available to share all of the great features of this property with you or to just let you relax on your own. The NeighborhoodA peaceful country setting, with panoramic ocean views, is the perfect home base for your Big Island excursions. The Hamakua Coast and North Hilo are graced with stunning coastline and lush “old Hawai’i.” To the North drive through historic Honokaa with its restored old fashioned movie theater (and detour to the lush Waipio Valley) and Waimea (brewery, galleries, Parker Ranch) to Kona (coffee, secluded beaches, resorts, dolphin swims, shopping). Closer “home” you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the rocks at Laupahoehoe Point, or visit the Laupahoehoe Train Museuam, Hakalau River park and old sugar cane ruins, KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls, try Skyline Eco Adventures Zip Line, and enjoy coastline access at Pepeekeo Pointe (exceptional whale watching and some ocean access). Along grab a meal at Low’s Country store and What’s Shakin smoothies in Pepeekeo, learn area history at Papaikou Sugar Plantation Museum, and stroll through the world famous Arboretum, to name a few “must visits.” Hidden gems are the Hamakua Mushroom Company (tour), Vetiver Farms Hawaii, Onomea Tea Company (tour/tastings), Mr. Ed’s Bakery, amongst others. Hilo is easy to navigate, has fun restaurants and places to shop (a must visit is Kathmandu on Wainuenue and the Papa a paloa Bakery’s famous chocolate/walnut cookies and key lime pie). Past Hilo you can swim at Richardson Beach among the lava rocks, and continue on to Volcano (take a jacket), or to the many sights in Puna and South Pointe. Or go up Saddle Road to the world class observatories (on the 13,700 foot volcano) on Mauna Kea (bring along warm clothes).
