The SpaceOur beach home is in the front line of houses in Elands bay South. From the lounge, deck and upper look out chill-area it has an several unobscured views of the surf break from take off to beach. It looks down on the mouth of the vlei where a large array of magnificent bird life floats, wades, fishes, calls and sings. Through the back gate there is direct access to a path leading to the beach via a few minute walk. The roadside of the house looks out onto the rocky fynbos hill, the peak of which is circled and perched on by a resident Verreaux Eagle pair. Elandsbay is a very peaceful place which somehow induces immediate relaxation. There is a vibration in the area (perhaps due to the interplay of sea and slopes) which truly leaves one feeling moved. This possibly lead to the Khoisan of ancient times choosing a cave which is 20 minutes walk from the house to paint rock paintings of swollen rain animals and hunters while performing their ceremonies. Guest AccessYou will have access to the entire house except the laundry, garage and one of the four bedrooms, which will be locked. We have provided bedding, towels, body and hand wash, toilet paper, cleaning materials and basic herbs and spices. As this is our holiday home which we use regularly, we have locked a food cupboard with our own supplies as well as one of the linen cupboards. Everything else is for your use and enjoyment. Interaction with GuestsWe, Mark and Alexia, live in Cape Town and will not be available in person during your stay but we are contactable on our cell phones, the numbers of which are on the safety card in the entrance hall. We are happy to offer advice telephonically about the activities in the area. Rosetta who cleans the house and holds the keys is available in person as she lives in Elands bay. I will provide her contact numbers via e-mail on booking. The NeighborhoodThis part of the west coast is magical, untouched and unique. It offers outdoor activities galore including surfing, kiting, windsurfing, climbing, hiking, paddling, running along the incredibly long stretch of beach, fishing, and diving. This is also one of the top areas in South Africa for bird watching. Verlorenvlei boasts on of the greatest varieties of bird species in South Africa. During flower season a short drive offers lovely flower sightings. There is an iron ore railway line passing Elands bay North and South. This is one of the longest trains in the world. Apparently some of the trains run for more than 3 km! Some days' rail schedules are busier than others. The train does not stop transporting ore on any days in the year. Most tenants find the train charming and interesting but some have found it a disturbance. Getting AroundYou will need a car to get around as there is no reliable public transport in this part of the West Coast. There is parking for two cars behind a manual gate on the property. Other Things to NoteThere are two small cafes in Elands bay which stock only the most basic products including milk, eggs, bread, cleaning products, potatoes and sometimes other vegetables, apples and sometimes other fruit, frozen meat, snacks and drinks typical of a café. There are two complete liquor stores which only stock a small variety of wines. Permits for collecting mussels and diving crayfish are available at the post office. The hotel has a restaurant and bar and two more restaurants (“Vensterklip” and “Die mossel pot”) are found in the area. Both of the restaurants also have bars and all three have TV viewing facilities for sport events.

The SpaceWelcome to the seafood hotspot of the West Coast! Lamberts Bay is known as the Diamond of the West Coast and the crayfish mecca of South Africa. Snoek is also available during a snoek run which takes place a couple of times during the year. Boats from all over the West Coast flock to the town to catch this fish which has also become more popular. Lambert's Bay is also famous for its long stretches of uninterrupted white beaches and abundant marine life which gathers in the cool blue waters. Lambert’s Bay – the diamond of the West Coast The unpretentious, picturesque seaside village of Lambert’s Bay lies right up the West Coast, not far from Clanwilliam and only 2.5 hours’ drive from Cape Town. This part of the coast is quite simply beautiful, with wide expanses of white sand under blazing blue skies and endless opportunity to experience seafood in the heart of crayfish country. The open-air restaurants along the coast here have become something of an institution and offer unforgettable traditionally prepared seafood right next to the shoreline, as the sun goes down. The accommodation offered is right on the beachfront with amazing views over the ocean. Take a relaxing daybreak and soak up the sun, surf the sparkling waves or enjoy a boat ride over the big blue bay. This gem of a seaside village owes its origin to humble beginnings as a fishing village, like most of the surrounding South African coast villages, but is has become one of the major tourist attractions on the West Coast due to its moderate all year climate. The Sandveld Museum and nearby local farms like Wadrift, will open your mind to the cultural history of this unique place. Lambert's Bay is also jam-packed with plentiful birdlife. Some of the more popular species on the list include gannets and Cormorants. Dolphins, whales and the ever entertaining seals at the internationally acclaimed Bird Island attract tourist from all over. Heavyside dolphins are frequently spotted from the beach. Lambert's Bay is also a great place to view the lush stretches of wild field flowers that are most beautiful during spring. The SpaceThe quaint fishing village of Lambertsbay might be only two hours from the city of Cape Town, but it is about as far off the beaten track as you can get, with so little travelling time. Eland’s Bay is one of those gems that have managed to elude the rush of development and city dwellers to stake their claim on a piece of the coast - this is sand and sea with little else to lure the average holiday maker. The modest seaside town is worth the rather arduous journey (roads tend to be quite dilapidated as you head closer to Eland’s Bay with a dirt road detour to contend with), particularly as Verlorenvlei (lost natural wetland) - one of the biggest estuaries on the Cape West Coast region with thousands of birds including flamingos and pelicans - lies on the approach to Eland’s Bay. Verlorenvlei is the site of no fewer than 232 types of birds. Eland’s Bay really is a wonderful spot for dolphin and whale watching, and freshwater and salt fishing is touted as one of the best pastimes, although townsfolk will not stop short of telling you about how the fish have left this part of the coast - putting paid to the locals’ livelihood. But it is close to heaven to stroll on the beach where there is little commercialisation and where the term ‘relaxation’ isn’t a euphemism for flashy entertainment. It’s also a surfer’s paradise - known as e-bay to the surf fraternity, the sought after left-breaking waves mean it’s much like Jeffreys Bay only without the crowds - and in season one can dive for crayfish, provided you have a licence. The Baboon Point cliffs are a firm attraction, including the Bobbejaanberg Cave decorated with rock art and a shell midden (a deposit of shell). There is much debate about whether or not Baboon Point will be named a heritage site. no smoking allowed in the appartment Guest Access.
