Your host Tanya welcomes you to a wee glimpse of quintessential rural New Zealand. Seven years ago she and husband Greg had a vision to create a small piece of New Zealand paradise. With Greg's intimate understanding of all things wood and true flair for design, and Tanya's ability to “bring all the small things together" they created a unique hideaway destination for travelers. With the passing of Greg, and with her five children all but adults, Tanya now has the time and passion to nurture this accommodation retreat. Always on a mission and with an eclectic mix of job experiences behind her – from Avalanche Forecaster to Motorbike Postie – Tanya will delight you with stories of how Birdsong Lodge evolved, of colourful local history, and of worthwhile places to visit nearby. Relax in front of a roaring open fire and experience for yourselves what this unique slice of heaven has to offer. The Neighborhood
Make the most of your stay. Akaroa and it's picturesque harbour present an incredible range of superb opportunities for embracing a host of adventures – from active and energetic through to more gentle. The small Little River township has a small cluster of intriguing shops, one of which - the Little River Cafe and Gallery - comes with an outstanding reputation. The food is magnificent, the store is well stocked with basics, and the gallery has an ever changing mix of quality artisan products and exhibitions for you to peruse at your leisure. Akaroa, not more than a 30 minute car trip away, has an exhaustive and tremendously varied mix of beautiful cafes and restaurants among its many shops. Daytime cuisine and evening dining are both well catered for. A one day stop in Akaroa is simply not long enough to do these shops justice. If you are planning a day out and would like to take your lunch with you we would be happy to pack you a fresh hamper of fruits, fresh breads with an array of delectable fillings, and beverages. Ask us for more details when you book. See http://ww(URL HIDDEN) for a greater list of wonderful places to visit in Banks Peninsula.Getting Around

Green By Choice – Eco power and Responsible Recycling Tanya participates in environmental responsibility through the generation of "green" electricity (the complex is powered by a private mini hydro power system) and by maintaining and promoting a comprehensive recycling programme. Staying at Birdsong Lodge means you can be a part of the move to keep New Zealand a greener place. Talk to Tanya – she is more than a little proud of the fact that almost all power is produced on site here and would delight in showing you how the system works. The recycling programme they have in place is designed to dovetail with the local Christchurch City Council scheme. They encourage you, as a guest, to embrace this also to ensure non recyclable rubbish is kept to a minimum.
