At its peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries Loon Lake House could accommodate up to 800 guests, had 60 private “cabins” and grew to over 3,000 acres. The complex boasted two water systems, an underground sewer system, electricity, a dairy farm, vegetable gardens, a large boat house, general store, post office, workshops, laundries, staff housing, a golf course, a movie theater and even a train station. Celebrated artists, wealthy and socially prominent figures of the time and three US Presidents all vacationed there. Although the hotel and much of the supporting infrastructure is gone, some of the original buildings have been saved and preserved by private owners. Getting AroundThe house is located 20 minutes (by car) north of the town of Saranac Lake, where you will find food stores, laundromat, library, and many other amenities. Loon Lake is only 30 minutes from the Olympic Village of Lake Placid. Here you can visit the Olympic Center and ski jump, take a virtual bobsled and luge ride, or hike along High Falls Gorge on the nearby Ausable River. A gondola ride up the world famous Whiteface Mountain is only a few minutes away. Golf, rock climb, horseback ride, go antiqueing or just relax and enjoy the incredible surroundings. And if you're so inclined, there is shopping and dining galore. The Wildlife Center in Tupper Lake and the Wildlife Refuge in Wilmington are great options for nature lovers. Other Things to NoteWeekly rentals only, Saturday to Saturday. Water is from our own drilled well and is safe for cooking and drinking. Garbage pickup is once a week on Friday by a private carrier. There is no cell service at the house, which is common in the ADKs because of the few number of cell towers in more rural areas. However, you have free nationwide calling on landline.

The SpaceA fabulous vacation retreat on Loon Lake north of Saranac Lake. Enter and pass through a modern fully equipped kitchen and half bath into an Adirondack Room with a cathedral ceiling and large picture windows looking out over spectacular Loon Lake and the mountains beyond -- the best view on the lake. Explore the ground floor master bedroom with its private bath and the two upstairs bedrooms and their bath and then venture outside and down the path to the dock and marvel at the clarity of the water. At the dock a canoe and tandem kayak are waiting to take you on boating adventures. Meanwhile the rest of the family will have made its own discovery, a fabulous treehouse located a hundred feet up the hill from the front door. The treehouse, built in Adirondack style three years ago by Master Craftsman, Nate Parsons, is an architectural masterpiece.. Access is by a not-too-difficult climbing wall. Here the kids, or the whole family, can spend hours in the trees or pitch a tent and spend the night. After you have settled in you can make your plans for the rest of your stay --hiking on family friendly Crusher Mountain or more difficult Loon Lake Mountain. There are dozens of hikes to choose from. Or you can go out on the lake, canoeing or kayaking. You can fish the lake or the Saranac River. And if you are so inclined you can do a little shopping in Saranac Lake or Lake Placid. Whiteface Mountain, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake and the Adirondack Carousel in Saranac Lake are reasonable car rides away. But maybe you would prefer to curl up in the Adirondack room in front of the fireplace and just relax and enjoy.

The NeighborhoodLoon Lake is a hamlet of historic residences in the northeast region of the Adirondack Park. It is one of the few existing late 1800's resort sites, in Franklin County, where clusters of century old buildings are preserved. It was a socially prominent destination throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries thanks to the Loon Lake House resort built in 1878 by Mary and Ferd Chase. It had one of the Adirondack's first golf courses built in 1895. (The Loon Lake Golf Course was abandoned in 2003.) The beautiful landscape of Loon Lake attracted many public figures of the period. Presidents Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley enjoyed stays at Loon Lake during their presidencies. Wealthy families of the period, including the Vanderbilt's, Whitney's, Rothschild's, Rockefeller's, and Guggenheim's regularly stayed at the resort. Additionally, popular literates including Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Theodore Dreiser, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Oscar Wilde also vacationed at Loon Lake. Enjoy a wonderful week or a relaxing long weekend in a rustic Adirondack Lodge. Our camp was designed and constructed with large open spaces, plenty of glass and natural materials from the adirondacks modeled after the great camps from the late 1800s. We made sure the modern day features enjoyed today and find necessary are also incorporated into the lodge. Loon Lake and the Loon Lake House was the destination of 3 US Presidents which made it their summer white house in the late 1800s. Many of the NYC old families would come by train and spend the summer swimming and boating on Loon Lake. The NY Central railroad extended the tracks into Loon Lake and constructed a train station for arriving and departing guests. Today the rail line is used for biking in the summer and snowmachines in the winter. Majestic boathouses built in the late 1800s are now private camps and are still on the shoreline. Enjoy our large stone wood burning fireplace indoors with plenty of firewood available to help excape, unwind and relax from everyday life. There is nothing like sitting in front of a crackling fire, talking, enjoying an adult beverage. The lodge is furnished with adirondack and camp furniture. Hickory, oak and pine dining and sitting furniture, along with cedar log beds are used in the lodge rooms. Taxidermy Birds, fish and mammals/animals help set the mood. All are also seen around the area in real life. Large deck with adirondack chairs, dining table, log chairs and gas grill (we provide the propane) look out at Bass lake and the mountains. Enjoy the screened cottage attached to the deck. Listen to the loons, owls, birds and other wildlife. We have a two person canoe and kayak for you to use along with paddles and PFDs. Search no further, you've found an excellent home for your Adirondack vacation! The home is great for family reunions and other group functions, up to 10 people. There are 4 private bedrooms, each with a queen sized bed and private full bath and the den with futon but no private bath, you will not find this in any comparable rental, instead you will find rooms with multiple beds jammed into rooms, sharing one or two bathrooms. There is sleeping space for 10. Your family will be very comfortable here, there are so many places in and around the house to relax. From the large dock to the sun room and large living room which are both just feet away from the lake. The home is 3200 square feet and sits on 1.25 acres with 475 feet of lake front. It is very secluded from other camps around the lake so if you are looking for privacy, this is the place! The home is in the style of traditional Adirondack lodges/great camps with authentic ADK furniture and styling throughout. The large professional kitchen is fully stocked and even has 2 stoves! You will also find all of the conveniences of your home kitchen with a large stainless fridge, dishwasher, microwave and seating so you can entertain friends and family while making your feasts. The open floor plan (kitchen, dining room, living room and sun room) also allows for entertaining and makes relaxing in any room a breeze. There is so much that can be done right outside the doors! Fishing is excellent, you will catch many small mouth bass, northern pike, perch (good eatin') and a few elusive Large-mouth bass. You can walk or drive a few miles to the north branch of the Saranac River for trout fishing. There are many thousands of miles of hiking and biking trails right outside the door and we are in a great location for day hikes to some of the ADK high peaks and even some not so high peaks. Crusher Mountain is at the end of Mensink Rd (less than a mile), it is a very short hike to the top and there is a great view. If you are a little more adventurous then you can hike Loon Lake Mountains and see the fire tower which is about a 6 mile round trip. There are 2 canoes, 2 kayaks and a row boat for exploring the beautiful and private lake (no public access.) We can not allow outside motor boats, no exceptions. (you can bring your own personal watercraft like canoes and kayaks) We have patio furniture and ADK chairs in the yard for BBQ's and to just sit around with friends and family. Take a day trip to Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake (the Wild Center) or even Montreal. There are some great restaurants in town, lots of cool shops and many tourist attractions. Maybe take a trip back in time and ride the rails on the ADK Railroad. The Wild Center is a nature museum which is fun for the whole family and is located about 35 minutes away. Even closer is the Paul Smith's Visitors Interpretive Center which is a great place to see wildlife in nature and learn about the local ecology. We have a TV room with a DVD player (there is no TV reception and only a small collection of DVD's so bring a few for rainy days.) There are a couple board games and I'm told the house is great for Hide and Seek. I could write for days about all of the things you can do while staying here, but instead I will leave a little to your imagination. One thing that is for certain, you will enjoy your stay! We look forward to hearing from you...

The only thing you have to do is what you want. Build a fire, grab a blanket and listen to the distinct sound of each raindrop while you relax, read or take a nap. Get dressed and get that heart pumping with a challenging hike. Look for wildlife while you hop on the bike or grab the fishing rod and reel in some fun. Rediscover your own voice in nature's golden silence. Build an outside fire and toast the smores! Throw a log on the indoor fireplace, play cards, watch a movie or look for stars in the nighttime sky. Stay up late and let your body's alarm clock wake you. Snuggle up next to the fire, partner or family pet. Canoe, kayak or take a dip from the dock. You decide! The most important thing to spend is your time. You won't remember the minutes just the moments. Enjoy each moment with yourself or with your family at the cabin on the lake in the mountains.
