The SpaceRent our mother-in-law apartment in our home in North Community area of Los Alamos. Three night minimum. This fully furnished one bedroom apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, full bath with radiant floor heating in bathroom, washing machine (no dryer), wifi, private backyard entrance. On street parking or park in our driveway. Served by 3 bus lines. To TA-3 at LANL: by car ~5 minutes, by bus 15 minutes, foot by road 30 minutes, foot through canyons 50 minutes. The apartment has two rooms. One room is the kitchen. The other is the living/sleeping area. The apartment is suitable for 1-2 people. We host both short (3 nights) and long term visitors. When a guest arrives the apartment will be supplied with clean linens and towels, a few days worth of coffee, shampoo, toilet paper, soap, dish soap, etc, plus whatever is in the refrigerator. Other than food, a short term guest will have everything they need for the duration of their stay. Guest AccessApartment with private entrance and complete kitchen. No amenities are shared except that the apartment is in our home so we are sharing proximity. We try to be quiet and we like quiet guests. Our bedroom is directly above the apartment so smoking is strictly forbidden. Interaction with GuestsWe generally don't interact much with guests. The majority of our guests are scientists who are visiting Los Alamos National Laboratory and mainly want quiet and privacy which the apartment offers in spades. That being said, we will be happy to take you on the canyon hike to LANL. One of us seems to be slowing down with age and it takes at least 50 minutes to go that way now. Time permitting we can show you other nearby hiking trails as well. The apartment is in the walkout basement of our home. We are usually at home when someone stays in the apartment. The NeighborhoodConvenient to LANL and "downtown" Los Alamos. Santa Fe is 35-45 minutes by car. There is also a bus. (URL HIDDEN) Grocery Stores There is a convenience store north on Diamond Drive at the traffic light with a very basic selection of items (10 minute walk). Smiths Marketplace (Trinity Drive) Large grocery store with a household and clothing section, beer/wine/liquor (but not before noon on Sundays), and a drive through pharmacy. Los Alamos Cooperative Market (past the airport on the way out of town) (open to everyone). The coop specialized in local and organic foods, and they have excellent produce & meat sections. They also have a deli that is popular at lunchtime. Thursday Farmers Market During the warmer months there is a weekly farmers market in the Mesa Public Library parking lot. It’s every Thursday from about 7 am to 12 pm, April through early October. After that there is a once monthly indoor farmer’s market in Fuller Lodge. Restaurants There are a couple of restaurants within a ten minute walk (walk North on Diamond to the light, they are right behind the gas station). Bob’s Bodacious Barbecue Sushi Cafe (closes early as they have limited sushi every night) Papa Murphy’s take n’ bake pizza Film Festival is a DVD rental/coffee shop, and they sell espresso and breakfast burritos as well. There are many other restaurants in Los Alamos as well. For caffeine and chocolate fixes we recommend Film Festival (coffee), Starbucks (Central Ave), and Rose Chocolatier (chocolates and coffee) Rose Chocolatier is next the MDV just off Central Ave. Hiking There is a lot of hiking in Los Alamos. 50 Hikes in Los Alamos - Los Alamos County Close to home, we like to walk up Urban Street until it takes a right hand turn and changes into 48th St. In the vacant lot where the road turns there is a trail which takes you to the Perimeter trail. This trail runs for miles along the perimeter of Los Alamos. It also connects to Pipeline Road (no cars allowed), which you can take all the way to Pajarito Ski Area and points beyond. Both trails are popular for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Our other favorite hike is to hike or snowshoe up the ski area (a 20 minute drive). Getting AroundServed by 3 bus lines. To TA-3 at LANL: by car 5 minutes, by bus 10, foot by road 25 minutes, foot through canyons 50 minutes. Bus There is a free bus system run by the county called Atomic City Transit. It’s very convenient for getting to the lab, and pretty good for going downtown. All of the buses stop at the transit center next to LANL. The closest stop going to the lab or downtown is at Diamond Dr and Sycamore (5 min walk). The closest stop going away from town (north) is on the other side of Diamond Dr. & Sycamore, or North Rd and Urban St. Routes 4,5,6 all go to Diamond & Sycamore. You can view the routes at their website or download the app (of course). (URL HIDDEN) Rental Cars Enterprise rents cars from the Los Alamos Airport. We are happy to give you a ride out there, just let us know in advance. Other Things to NoteDecember 2014: we have a new cleaning crew. They are incredibly thorough. The apartment is in our walkout basement and the entrance is in our backyard. Access is via a dirt pathway that is about 40' long that ends in a flight of about 5 stairs. We have a cat who lives in the main house. He has been neutered and does not enter the apartment.

The SpaceI have included lots of photos. My home is welcoming, clean, and the living areas are very light and open. The outdoor gardens are inviting with views of the Jemez Mountains and Bandelier National Forest from the back patio. We have abundant wildlife (and I don't mean partying!) to consider...coyotes, rabbits, a herd of wild horses, and many, many bird species. If you want to see the REAL new Mexico? Get...out...of...town! I have many places to recommend that will make your heart sing. Sometimes being in the middle of nowhere is the best place to be. Guest AccessMi casa, Su casa. I expect my guests to make themselves at home, with respect to sharing it with me and my dog. We are a pretty quiet bunch here in Cochiti, reflecting the quiet of the outdoors. Guests have access to all the living spaces, except my private bedroom, of course. There are several places outside to sit and enjoy. One such is right outside the guest bedroom. I am happy to provide a basic breakfast of pastry and coffee. Feel free to request anything special that will make your stay more pleasant. 2 outdoor garden areas are great for enjoying your morning coffee or tea, an evening cocktail, watching the sun go down. Interaction with GuestsYour stay can be as private as you like. The guest room has it's own access thru the courtyard with good separation from my room. Guests are welcome to relax in the music/video space. I have a large collection of CD's. I have an old-style antenna on my house, believe it or not, they still exist! Much better than cable and it is free! I get all the basic channels along with 4 Public TV stations and some pretty cool stuff ! My dog, Elsie, is super friendly, and may pay you a visit now and again. She's very mellow, clean, and is very well behaved. The NeighborhoodCochiti Lake is a quirky, mixed bag of people and homes. There are artists, writers, retirees and families having one thing in common...we love it here! The lake is created by the 2nd largest earthen dam in the country. No wake boating is allowed and if you are a golfer, we have a Robert Trent Jones Golf course. 3 miles away is Kasha-Katuwe, Tent Rocks National Monument, an incredible place to hike where Mother Nature has carved out slot canyons and left her limestone spires and hoodoos. There is also hiking and camping in Tetilla peaks and the other southern pueblos are out our back door...Santo Domingo, San Felipe, Santa Ana. It is an area rich in history and the glorious New Mexico landscape. Being somewhat remote, we only have a Mini Mart in town, a gas station, and the "Stone Kiva" diner if you want to eat out. There are trails and plenty of places to walk right out the front door. Bring your bicycle! Check out the Cochiti Lake town website for more information. Getting AroundCochiti Lake is in a convenient location near Santa Fe and Albuquerque. As the crow flies, it is only about 10 miles from the famous Plaza. However, being 2 leggeds, we have to drive there! South Santa Fe is 20 miles away using our own BEAUTIFUL, pastoral "back road" ( paved) and I-25. The Albuquerque airport is 47 miles away. So you'll need a car. The good news is that gas is the cheapest around because we are on Indian land. Other Things to NoteI work at home presently. Most mornings I'm on my PC early (7:30-8-ish) and take a walk with my dog shortly after. I enjoy spending time outdoors and in my garden and walking the trails around town. There is also a road across the top of the dam that is fun to walk. The closest grocery store, Romero's is 7 miles away in Pena Blanca with limited choices. Santa Fe has 2 Whole Foods, a Trader Joe's, Sprouts, etc. with the closest being a Walmart about 20 miles from town. Our Mini Mart provides only the basics plus a little more, so you have to plan ahead. We have internet access although slow at times. And no issues with mobile phone service.

The SpaceI think the best part about this room is the outside entrance. It gives a person more privacy coming and going. Guest AccessIf you like, you can use our kitchen and laundry area. You leave the bedroom, walk down a short hallway and you are in our living room. From there, you walk across the living room to the kitchen. The laundry room is off the kitchen. Interaction with GuestsI am more than happy to tell you about Los Alamos, be it what is there to see here to what it is like to live here. I will warn you that once I start talking, I am hard to stop! The NeighborhoodI think my neighborhood is a typical Los Alamos neighborhood. Getting AroundLos Alamos does run a bus service during the week. We don't have much of a rush hour, but during that time buses run every thirty minutes. During the rest of the day it runs every hour. The bus stop is less than a 5 minute walk. It will get you to the main part of Los Alamos Laboratory. This is fine if you are doing work at the main part of the Lab. If you are working away from the main part of the Lab, say at the accelerator, the County bus service doesn't go out there. During the week, the lab does run shuttles in the early morning and late afternoon.
