The SpaceWelcome to the Land of Enchantment! This private casita sits just off the Turquoise Trail in the hills south of Santa Fe. The Lone Butte casita has a queen bed and full sized folding couch in one large room with a cozy kiva fireplace, beautiful wood floors and beamed ceiling. It has a small but stocked kitchenette with a dorm fridge, and a newly tiled modern bath with walk-in shower and dressing room. Amazing sunset views, sunny courtyard for eating, reading, birdwatching and star gazing, hand-crafted cedar soaking tub under the stars, outdoor firepit, cycling/mountain biking/running/horse trails are right out your front door, and skiing is a short drive away. After visiting Santa Fe for years as a retreat, we moved here to create just the place we would love to visit: beautiful space and location, easy access to the outdoors, classic adobe ambiance, hosts who know their way around a kitchen, museum, and national park, and a commitment to building a sustainable community and environment. This historic ranch, on 10 acres of high-desert landscape, has been retrofitted with geothermal heating and cooling, solar electricity, and all sorts of energy and water saving features. The rooms are atmospheric and comfortable, with down comforters and fine linens, decent cookware, barware, and french press for coffee/tea. As hosts, we can provide you with daypacks and water bottles, recommendations on where to eat, hike, bike and explore, and a lending library of gameboards and vacation reading. We operate as a bed and breakfast year round, but have lower off-season rates for the "sleep in and eat on your own" budget traveler. If you'd like breakfast, just let us know and we'll add it to your tab. We are 10 minutes south of Santa Fe, about 25 minutes to the plaza, and 45 minutes from Alburquerque. We are super close to the Santa Fe Brewing Company, Cerrillos Hills State Park, the groovy art colony of Madrid, and the Eaves and Bonanza Creek movie ranches. The San Marcos Cafe is the closest breakfast and lunch option, the Mine Shaft Tavern and the Hollar in Madrid have a lively community and music scene. Traveling with friends? We have another casita and 3 additional suites and bedrooms, all with private bath, if you want to book the whole house. Guest AccessAll guests have access to French Press coffee from our local roaster and a shared full kitchen. From Memorial Day to October and over holidays we offer a farm fresh breakfast from 8:30-10 everyday, and evening wine and tapas on request. Enjoy our cedar soaking hot tub, fire pits, courtyard fountain, double hammock, bocce ball on the grounds. We have Wifi throughout, but we encourage you to unplug, unwind and relax. We also have some outfitting for the active relaxers (daypacks, water bottles, maps, some cycling gear) and plain old relaxers (board games and paperbacks)! Interaction with GuestsWe see most guests at breakfast during high season, but if you prefer to prepare your own in the privacy of your room/suite, we can arrange that! Otherwise, we live on the property and are generally busy in the garden, happy to answer any questions and make recommendations about where to eat and what to see and do. The NeighborhoodSolitude, sunshine, cycling, and stars (friends from Santa Fe say they can't see the stars). Also, lots of character and characters in neighboring Cerrillos & Madrid. Getting AroundDuring high season, guests take the rail runner from the 599 stop up the road to town - avoiding parking and mid-town festival traffic.

The SpaceThe ranch combines the rustic charm of classic New Mexico architecture with modern luxury. Opening to the front courtyard, the Moroccan Room sleeps two under high beams and clerestory windows. It has a rustic queen wrought iron bed with quality linens and down bedding. It also has a writing desk, private shower and powder room (flanked by inlaid Moroccan doors, hence the room’s name). Adjacent to the Kiva Room and in the original ranch house, this room shares the ranch kitchen and living room with other guests. All rooms have access to kitchens/kitchenettes with French press coffee. Movie buffs should enjoy our location in the heart of "Tamale-wood" with both the Bonanza Creek and Eaves movie ranches as neighbors. Santa Fe’s dining, galleries and museums are less than half an hour away, and both downhill and cross-country ski destinations are within 45 minutes. We are 50 minutes from the ABQ airport, 15 from Santa Fe airport, and 10 from the NM Railrunner train - which is a stop for the hourly shuttle to ABQ as well as regular service to downtown Santa Fe if you want to avoid the parking hassle during festival weekends. Most folks rent a car to get around, but if you are here to be still we could arrange pick up from either the rail runner/shuttle stop or Santa Fe airport for a small fee. We have a dog and cat, so let us know if you have allergies so we can accommodate. Also, we are in the country with coyotes, rabbits and wildlife large and small. This is not a sterile environment! The SpaceJust off of the Turquoise Trail, a Scenic Byway, the property is close to Galisteo, Cerrillos and the old mining town of Madrid. Just 4 miles away, on the road to town, one can enjoy the best New Mexican breakfasts and lunches at the San Marcos Cafe while watching hens, turkeys and peacocks roam the property. Our casita is cozy and carefully designed in the traditional local adobe style with hand-plastered interior walls, beautiful viga ceilings, and a wonderful kiva fireplace. The interior photos of the casita were taken by a professional Airbnb photographer, so they are terrific, but we'd like to emphasize our casita is a cozy 700 square feet total. With amazing sunset views of the surrounding Cerrillos Hills, the casita is nestled into the landscape with 360 degrees of complete privacy. The land is completely natural containing two large sand-lined arroyos (dry creek beds). Tranquility, fresh air, unforgettable sunsets and clear starry nights are everyday treats, and the sound of coyotes howling in the distance make this a precious and unique place. Climate: cold (20°-40°F) in winter, and as warm as 80°-100°F in summer, but it cools down at night and often there are short thunderstorms in the late afternoon in July and August. The air is very dry and the altitude is approximately 7,000 ft. Spring and fall are ideal seasons to visit. Skiing nearby in winter. Access: fly into Albuquerque International Airport and rent a car; drive north on highway 25. Or fly into Santa Fe County Municipal Airport. Amtrak stops in nearby Lamy. The casita sleeps two in the queen bedroom, one in the single bedroom, and two on the double futon in the living room. A picnic table, hammock and lounge chair are outside on the slate patio. A stone fireplace is available for outdoor barbeques, and a pile of firewood can be used outdoors or indoors in the traditional fireplace. A large bathroom has a shower, and a washer/dryer. The kitchen has all appliances. Linens, towels, extra blankets, etc. are (website hidden) player/radio with CDs, a telephone, no TV currently, but we have Internet access/Wifi. Games, puzzles, books and kids' toys are in the small bedroom. Area fans available. In 25 minutes you can be in downtown Santa Fe. Bandolier and Petroglyph National Monuments, the Santa Fe Opera, and the Pecos, Sangre de Christo, Sandia and Jemez mountains are all nearby. The mountains offer hiking and fishing in summer, and skiing in winter (Ski Santa Fe in the Sangre de Christos; and ski the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque). Art fairs and the famous Zozobra Festival take place all summer in town. Albuquerque is an hour to the southwest. The longest tram in the world climbs up the Sandia Mountains, which lie east of Albuquerque. Christmas is very nice, the town is decorated with lots of candelarias. A special thing to do is to visit a nearby pueblo when they are having a feast or celebration day. There will be dancing, arts, food and other traditional Native American culture to be enjoyed. Guest AccessEverything the house has to offer, our own 12 acres as well as walking or hiking in the neighborhood and adjacent properties. Our land encompasses two arroyos which are great for a walk. Interaction with GuestsAs much as needed or desired. Phone calls, emails, texts, before, during and after stay. Please sign our guest book! The NeighborhoodIt's very secluded yet accessible to both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Beautiful New Mexico high desert scenery, with amazing sunsets and views of surrounding mountain ranges. Sunsets are visible beyond the nearby Ortiz Mountains. Built low in the landscape, it feels like no one else is around. All adjacent properties are at least 12 acres so there are neighbors, but lots of space in between. The Lone Butte grocery store and gas station is a few miles away on Hwy 14, as is the San Marcos Cafe for all of your breakfast, lunch, hardware and feed store needs! Getting AroundA car is needed and a navigation device/GPS is helpful. Mapping ahead of time is a good idea as well. Roads leading to the casita are dirt roads and are susceptible to weather conditions. Other Things to NoteThe photos of the interior of the casita were taken by a professional Airbnb photographer, so they are wonderful, but we'd like to emphasize our casita is a cozy 700 square feet total. Cell service can be good or bad depending on your provider, but the house has a landline telephone for local and long-distance calls. Currently no companies provide Internet access in this neighborhood.

The SpaceThis rustic cottage is called the Flicker House, named after the birds that nest under the eaves. It is perfect for the frugal traveler, and for those who love the wild outdoors. The specialness of this space is that it has been lovingly hand crafted with natural earthen plasters and re-purposed elements. Hang your hat on the tree that supports the sleeping loft. Quench your thirst with delicious filtered rainwater. The passive solar cottage heats itself through harvested sunlight. Sometimes you might want to light a fire in the wood stove. The ample shade porch is made of twisted tree branches. This place has just the essentials for an opportunity to get away from it all. Come here to enjoy the natural environment, and the warm earthen interior of this handcrafted space. A great place for folks who want to get some dirt under their fingernails. There is a two burner propane stove, a small counter top, and the most essential kitchen ware. There's no plumbing but there is water, soap, and a basin provided to wash up with. The cottage is also stocked with filtered rainwater for drinking. The extra little futon can be pulled out for a third person. This cozy cottage has just 180 square feet of indoor space. It's off-the-grid and free from electricity except for the solar light. No electricity means no refrigerator. We can provide a cooler which works great in the winter. In the summer you may want to bring ice from town. Phone reception won't be good in the house, but may work if you hike uphill a little ways. Check out Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center's website to find out more about us. Our special tiny home may be your next favorite spot on earth. But it's not for everyone. Please read our whole listing so you know what to expect and tell us a little about yourself. Thanks! Guest AccessWhen you arrive, drive all the way to the end of the driveway and you will see an earthen cottage. We will meet you in this area which is the best place to turn your car around, and we will show you where to park. The mile and a half drive on our dirt road can be shocking for some folks. It's a bumpy one, but usually accessible for even an adventurous Prius. Of course you can come and go during your stay, but many people prefer to just prepare to be on the land. Interaction with GuestsThe tipi is located at Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, where we experiment with and demonstrate solar designs, wise water systems, permaculture, land restoration, natural building and other aspects of self sufficiency. Our guests may wander the site to have a look. Sometimes we host classes and events, sometimes we are working hard on a project. Sometimes we have interns. The nearby Tipi may also be booked for a retreat. We are happy to chat with you a bit about our work and the general area. Some guests arrange to stay longer as as part of our Sustainable Living Residency program. We give tours of the sustainable systems in our demonstration site that last about an hour, and we charge $20. If you are interested, please pre-arrange with us. You can easily find Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center's website to get a better sense of our place. The NeighborhoodWe are in an off-grid area, a mile and a half down a dirt road, where the neighbors all wave to each other upon passing. Cell phone service is spotty in these hills and valleys. The land is beautiful and has a peaceful cozy feeling. You can take a daytime hike 40 minutes into the funky artist village of Madrid to get a coffee or a beer or check out the galleries and shops. There is plenty of land to explore here. We explain during your orientation the best places to go and not go. Getting AroundYou will need a car to get here. Depending on your experience with the dirt roads of New Mexico, a high clearance vehicle may feel essential. However, your random rental car or Prius can usually make it here just fine. It just takes going slowly to navigate the bumps. But in the rare event that the road is really wet, it gets very muddy. 4wd is essential for those times. We don't recommend vehicles with especially low clearance. Serious rain, snow or ice may hinder your travels to our site, so check with us on road conditions if that seems likely. If you plan to book much ahead of time, especially in the winter months, you may want to have a 4wd just in case as the weather is hard to predict. It's best to follow the directions we give you on the itinerary, rather than following GPS on our windy dirt roads. Other Things to NoteCheck out Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center's website to find out more about us. Our special tiny home may be your next favorite spot on earth. But it's not for everyone. Please tell us a little about yourself. Thanks!

The SpaceOriginally built in the 1940's, we have updated this amazing property with solar electricity, geothermal heating and cooling, modernized kitchens and baths, and a beautiful cedar soaking tub. Called "rough luxury" by many of our guests, we blend authentic architecture, rustic furnishings, and high quality bedding and amenities for unique and comfortable stay. Guest AccessThis is for the whole house as a vacation rental - you have 5 rooms and suites, a large living/dining room, courtyard, hammock, wifi, and hot tub. This does not include breakfast or the usual amenities of staying at the inn, though we are happy to work with you to host special meals, etc. The house is surrounded by 10 acres and adjacent to an arroyo, with room for outdoor walks, games, and hikes. The house has a fully equipped kitchen with gas range, microwave, full sized fridge and outdoor gas and charcoal grills. Guests share a cedar soaking tub, for quiet soaks under the stars. This is shared with the owners, and sound travels in the country, so tub-goers must be quiet after 9pm. Interaction with GuestsAs much or as little as you'd like. We get along with people. The NeighborhoodThe Turquoise Trail is amazing - scenic, old west just minutes from the bustle of Santa Fe. There are mining towns, art colonies, beautiful hikes and horseback riding within 10 miles of our ranch. Getting AroundThere is no public transit servicing this area. Other Things to NoteWhile this listing is for the ranch as vacation rental, we have hosted many special meals in our barn, and can send you menus and cost separately. The house sleeps 16 guests with beds filled to capacity - there are 7 rooms (each suite has 2 rooms), some of them with more than one bed. If you are planning a wedding or larger party, there is an event charge and it requires a contract and liability insurance beyond the airbnb coverage.

The SpaceOld World architecture in a very comfortable and relaxed setting. There are three bedrooms and baths, efficient kitchen, indoor and outdoor eating areas. Infinity views. Situated in an historical area within a mile of the ancient San Marcos Pueblo and Turquoise mines. The property features a Chartres styled Labyrinth, and the house has a third story meditation room. Three bedrooms can handle six people in comfort. This house has long been a favorite of visual artists and writers over the years. We recently learned from a guest that Peter, who is a Ranger at the Cerrillos Park, is associated with Astronomy Adventures and is willing to visit the house and share his stargazing knowledge with guests. The night skies are amazing! Guest AccessThe house and yard is yours to use. There are 350 acres available for hiking. Santa Fe is 15 minutes away. Horseback riding is close by along with the art town of Madrid. Interaction with GuestsWe can interact as much as desired. The NeighborhoodThis property sits off the Turquoise Trail, scenic and historic, and close to the Cerrillos Hills. The area is steeped in history from the various Pueblos to mining towns. The present neighbors are from many areas and very friendly. Getting AroundTo easily use this property I think a rental car works best, plenty of parking available. Other Things to NoteWinter in Santa Fe with snow conditions requires a SUV type of vehicle. Cell phone service can be tricky at times but works best from the dining room at South windows or outdoors on that side of house.

The SpaceThis Strawbale Cottage is the first structure that we built at Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, and we lived in it for four and a half years. Our favorite elements are the earthen walls, the layered wood slab ceiling that reminds us of a beaver dam, and the special sunrise window. This structure was lovingly crafted out of earth from this site, salvaged materials, and straw grown and baled in Colorado. Living in this house informed our sustainability journey, and gave us a sense of abundance that comes with simple elegant design. The many people who have lived in it since have also fallen in love with the space. We have designed our sustainable systems to make it easy to live consciously with our resources. Our whole site is a living system in itself; plants growing, water flowing, people working, the sun heating everything we need it to. We find it a great privilege to live within this beautiful land with it's rich history of ancestral Puebloan use. Usually people find renewal in how the essentials of life here feel so abundant. We find that it's easy to live on 5 gallons of rainwater a day. We smile with every solar cooked meal. The Sustainable Living Residency is an opportunity to live this low impact life and have a great time doing it. This is a place to grow one's intimacy with the earth and the rain and the sun. This is a place that can give you a life that revolves around the rhythms of the environment. And there's electricity and wireless internet so that you may carry on the life that you came from. There is a lot to gain from a taste of this lifestyle, and it requires certain attention from the residents. For example, you will learn to only turn on lights that you are using, and to monitor the level of power in the photovoltaic system while you use your laptop on a long winter night. This place asks of you to pay attention to what you pour down the drain. Salts, solids, and products with sodium are limited in order to keep the plants in the greywater system healthy. In the winter you will notice that it takes a few hours of direct sun for the water to heat up. You will learn that opening and closing the insulated curtains is essential to keeping your space at a comfortable temperature, and you will be impressed with the comfort. If you want to know what it means to live off-the-grid in a conscious way, this is a great opportunity. The sustainable living residencies are week long experiences, minimum. Guest AccessThere is an adobe bathroom connected to the strawbale cottage. This is potentially a shared space and may be used by others on site. There are locking doors opening both into the cottage and to the outdoors. It contains solar heated running water (depending on the weather), a composting toilet, and an earthen atmosphere with designs on the walls painted with homemade clay paints. There is an outdoor community kitchen with running water for using in the warmer months, high and low-temperature solar cookers, kitchen ware, a propane stove, and incredible views. In the winter, the propane stove is installed inside the cottage. Interaction with GuestsAt the beginning of the residency we will give you a tour of the site, and show you how all the systems work. We will be available to answer your questions and provide training on using the solar cookers. We will want to hear about your goals for your time at Ampersand and give you the privacy you need. We want to support you in your journey towards sustainability and resilience in your own life, and will be around to discuss options and avenues. We can also discuss volunteer projects for your time with us. There are always ways to contribute to this place with one's loving care. The NeighborhoodWe are in an off-grid area, a mile and a half down a dirt road, where the neighbors all wave to each other upon passing. There are neighbors, but getting to them is a hike. In fact, the hiking is the best part of our "neighborhood." You can hike 40 minutes into the funky artist village of Madrid to get a coffee, share a beer with some eccentric folk, treat yourself to a tasty meal, or to check out the quaint galleries. Getting AroundYou will need a car to get here. Depending on your experience with the dirt roads of New Mexico, a high clearance vehicle may feel essential. However, your random rental car or Prius can usually make it here just fine. It just takes going slowly to navigate the bumps. Serious rain, snow or ice may hinder your travels to our site, so check with us on road conditions if that seems likely. Other Things to NoteIf you are interested in the Sustainable Living Residency, please find out more about us through our website: (URL HIDDEN) We will also want to know about you and your experience with camping or primitive living, and your goals for your time on the property.

The SpaceThe tipi is located privately on 39 acres of beautiful high desert. There are candles ready to light and no electricity. There is a clean outhouse with a composting toilet. We provide a jug of delicious filtered rainwater. There are two double futons in this large space, and room for a few more folks to borrow our sleeping pads or just curl up on the carpeted floor. Bring your own camping gear like sleeping bags, cook stoves and flashlights, and check the temperatures for Cerrillos, NM online if you want to camp in colder weather. We are a high elevation so it can get cold at night. We used to allow fires in the tipi but it proved too destructive to the canvas so now we offer a nice collection of candles. Please note that while the tipi is a beautiful and historic architecture, it is not completely enclosed from the outdoors like a tent. Guest AccessWhen you arrive, drive all the way to the end of the driveway and you will see an earthen cottage. We will meet you in this area which is the best place to turn your car around, and we will show you where to park. The mile and a half drive on our dirt road can be shocking for some folks. It's a bumpy one, and we recommend 4WD, but the road is usually accessible for even an adventurous Prius. But if it's been really raining the road can get very muddy and makes 4wd imperative. Of course you can come and go during your stay, but many people prefer to just prepare to be on the land for a full day especially since our minimum stay is 2 nights. Interaction with GuestsThe tipi is located at Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, where we experiment with and demonstrate solar designs, wise water systems, permaculture, land restoration, natural building and other aspects of self sufficiency. Sometimes we host classes and events, sometimes we are working hard on a project. We are happy to chat with you a bit about our work and the general area. Sometimes we have people stay as part of a residency program or other retreaters in our other listing, the Unplugged Strawbale Tiny House. Sometimes we have interns. Other Things to NotePlease check the weather forecast for the Cerrillos, NM area before you book. It's cold in the winter and you will need to have enough layers to stay warm. Be prepared for camping! If you book far in advance, you may want to make sure to have a 4wd vehicle. It's hard to predict road conditions far ahead of time. When the road really gets saturated, it's very muddy and slippery. But this is the desert and that doesn't happen very much.

The SpaceGreat for groups up to four people(and more if you want to rough it a bit,) this house was designed by Tullio Inglese who has worked with Paolo Soleri, Walter Gropius and Warren Callister. The founder of Nacul Center for Ecological Architecture, the Bow Truss House is designed with principles of sacred geometry, feng shui and solar gain in mind. It is situated 15 - 20 minutes from Santa Fe on The Turquoise Trail, a winding road that leads to Albuquerque through old coal and turquoise mines and biker bars. This home has been a retreat for artists and writers for two decades. Saltillo tile is throughout the house and the curved pine roof and windows let in a dazzling light display throughout the day. Radiant heat keeps your bones warm without further drying the air. The furniture is comfortable and in a minimal style with three beds and extra sleeping room on the couch, available cots and futons in the ample loft space. Cook dinner on a gas stove in the kitchen with concrete countertops and a massive free standing maple butcher block. Walk out the back door and down into the arroyo and you can hike for miles, exploring trails, caves and rock formations that conjure up images of an ancient dry seabed. At night look at the stars and listen to a concert put on by the coyotes. NEW ADDITION: MINIMALISTIC RENOVATED 1950'S SCHOOLBUS ON PROPERTY WITH BED AND WOODSTOVE. With pets welcome, wi-fi, washer and dryer, fireplace and a deep black bottom bathtub, the only drawback is you may find it hard to want to leave. But should you want to venture into Santa Fe, the drive is an uncrowded 15 minutes to the South side of town. Or venture ten minutes in the other direction to the old mining town turned anarchist outpost of Madrid where you can shop for vintage cowboy boots, eat a buffalo burger and hear some of the best roots, country western and blues music in the state. Guest AccessAll of the house is open save for a locked room in the hallway where I store my stuff. Interaction with GuestsI am usually around to greet guests on arrival but there are many times when guests just let themselves in the house on their own. During your stay I will be in town and available by phone to answer any questions you may have. The NeighborhoodDown the road is the ton of Cerillos where there is hiking, horse back riding, electric bike rental and a spa with yoga classes and massage. A little further down is the mining town of Madrid with a biker bar, wonderful food and guaranteed great music. Other Things to NoteI have had guests up to 21 people, but that size group means a camp out on the floor or even outside. The loft space with the extra futons etc. can get hot during the day in the summer. The loft is also aesthetically very bare bones. For the ideal cushy comfy stay(no futons moved around etc.), I'd say limit your group to six people. That said, some of my most exiting times at the house have been with large groups of up to fifteen people. This means a bit of mayhem and futons and cots strewn about the house, but still fun.

The SpaceLocated on the scenic Turquoise Trail, at the Garden of the Goddess Retreat Center is 15 miles south of Santa Fe, and only a few miles up the road from the artsy town of Madrid. (GPS will not get you here, please follow directions carefully.) The property was held for sacred purpose for millennia by native people and is famous in northern New Mexico for its unique rock outcroppings in an oasis environment. This adobe guesthouse is nestled against a giant sandstone wall in the center of the retreat compound. It is two story and offers one bedroom, one ceramic tiled bath and one gorgeous, multi-purpose, handcrafted sink. It can accommodate up to 4 people with a queen bedroom upstairs, and a queen futon sofa downstairs in the common area. The open floor plan has large windows to bring in light and is designed with great air flow in mind, so there is no door that separates the common area from the stairs or entry to the top floor. Features include an efficiency kitchen area with refrigerator, toaster oven, microwave, an induction cooking set and coffee maker in the downstairs living area. (The kitchenette is NOT set up to prepare or cook traditional family meals! However there is also a community kitchen on the property that you can use if you would enjoy getting your chef on.) Electric heaters keep you cozy on cold nights. One easygoing, non-barking, house-broken, small to medium sized, clean dog (ONE!) is welcome if you keep him/her with you at all times, keep off the furniture and scoop up after on leashed walks. Please let us know your pup will be coming with you. We are nestled in behind huge rocks so we do not have general cell phone coverage. We DO HAVE extenders that provide perfect reception for Verizon (and affiliates) and Sprint. The property is peaceful and generally quiet, but there are 4 other folks who live in the compound so you may hear footsteps or an inoccasional whoop when the bats migrate through, or a baby great horned owl or road runner happen by--very exciting things to us country dwellers. We don't generally host parties but there is the possibility of hearing faint bits of conversation from an outside sitting area when guests may be visiting one of the other residences. While it is our intention to always be respectful of others, the property has to be maintained and so the quiet may also be broken by brief interludes with groundskeepers or other necessary repair or delivery folks. This garden oasis in the high dessert is ready to greet your next visit to New Mexico with open arms. Come and explore the enchanted beauty of the Santa Fe area! We'd love to host you! Guest AccessBeyond your own guest house, there is an enormous "back yard" behind the rock outcroppings that has many fascinating sites of sand stone formations with paths for gentle exploration. Please be mindful of where you are walking as we share the land with numerous critters from great horned owls to bunnies and lizards etc. These beings are not aggressive to those not in their food chain and some enjoy sunbathing, so watch that you don't step on a lounger and scare both yourselves! Interaction with GuestsWe are delighted to offer our two cents on yummy places to eat, sacred sites to explore and places to leave your money in trade for fabulous turquoise, silver and other artistic endeavors! The owner is a long time teacher of Toltec mysticism and is available for private sessions. The NeighborhoodThe ranch is located 5 miles north of the village of Madrid, a unique enclave of artists, great places to eat (The Hollar and Mama Lisa's) and an old fashioned roadhouse (The Mineshaft.) To our north a quick 20 minutes is Santa Fe! Truly one of the most amazing places to dine (too many to mention but here are a few...Geronimo's for upscale fabulousness; Jinga for Pan-Asian/Thai; Il Piatto, amazing Italian farmhouse, Vinaigrette, a Salad Bistro; AGAVE Lounge and The Old House Restaurant-great bar and amazing eats; Del Charro Saloon, with perfect margaritas and inexpensive but great bar food. ) After serious munching you can buy world class art and enjoy its many cultural gifts. If you want to do some hiking and explore the environment, Tent Rocks is 40 minutes away. The drive to the Santa Fe Ski Basin is gorgeous and takes about 1 hour. Bandelier National park is about 60 miles away and also a fabulous drive. Taos is 80 miles and a prefect day trip if you get up early in the morning! GPS does not work here or on a lot of these country roads! Getting AroundYou really need a car to stay here. Though the intrepid might be able to get along with a bike! Other Things to NoteSmoking is not welcomed in the residential area. Parking: After you unload, please part your vehicle in the area to the right of the teepee structure. If it is snowing, and you have to be able to get out, please park your vehicle by the front gate as it is not usually possible to get the ranch plowed in a timely manner.

Other Things to NoteWe are in the country where there is wildlife. The Casita Does Not have mice. Having the front door open lets mice into the casita. Please make sure to close the front door and other doors (and do not have the doors open too long) to keep mice out. Traps have been set in the casita in case you let mice in. New Mexicans love their dirt roads. Our 1/2 mile of road is dirt as well. You will have access to the house WiFi and an office space where you can use your computer. There is no washer or dryer. Our vacation property is a wonderful adobe-style home on 12 private acres just south of Santa Fe. For those who want to enjoy both "the city different" and the wonderful high desert country, this home is ideal. Just off of the Turquoise Trail, a Scenic Byway, the property is close to Galisteo, Cerrillos and the old mining town of Madrid. The interior photos of the casita were taken by a professional photographer, so they are terrific, but we'd like to emphasize our casita is a cozy 700 square feet total. With amazing sunset views of the surrounding Cerrillos Hills, the casita is nestled into the landscape with 360 degrees of complete privacy. The landscape is completely natural, with two large sand-lined arroyos (dry creek beds) on two of our property borders. Tranquility, fresh air, unforgettable sunsets and clear starry nights are everyday treats, and the sound of coyotes howling in the distance make this a very special and unique place. Linens, towels, extra blankets, etc. are available. CD player/radio with CDs, a telephone (but no Internet) and only a few TV channels on a small TV. Games, puzzles, books and kids' toys are in the small bedroom. Portable air conditioner and area fans available. Internet access in town. A two-night stay requires an additional $75 cleaning fee. A special thing to do all year long is to visit a nearby pueblo when they are having a feast or celebration day. There will be dancing, arts, food and other traditional Native American culture to be enjoyed. The neighborhood around the casita features beautiful New Mexico high desert scenery, with amazing sunsets and views of surrounding mountain ranges. Built low in the landscape, it feels like no one else is around. All adjacent properties are at least 12 acres so there are neighbors, but lots of space in between. Explore our own 12 acres as well as walk in the neighborhood and adjacent properties. Our land encompasses two arroyos which are great for a walk. The Lone Butte grocery store and gas station is a few miles away on Hwy 14, as is the San Marcos Cafe for all of your breakfast, lunch, hardware and feed store needs! Getting around: a car is needed and a navigation device/GPS is helpful. Mapping ahead of time is a good idea as well. All nearby roads are dirt roads in good condition; local weather conditions apply. Communication: cellular phone service can be good or bad depending on your provider, but the house has a landline telephone for local and long-distance calls. We are available for contact via phone, email, texts, before, during and after stay. Please sign our guest book!

The COOP still has the original wood ceiling, multi-leveled floors and partial stone wall from its former life as the chicken coop that once famously provided eggs to Santa Fe. In its present incarnation it has metamorphised into a yummy, cozy, gorgeous guesthouse nestled against a sandstone wall on the edge of the retreat compound. It offers one bedroom, one ceramic tiled bathroom, a lovely living room- heated with a wood burning stove and a full sized kitchen, perfect for long stays. It can accommodate up to 4 people with a double bedroom, and a double futon sofa in the common area. Features include an a full sized kitchen with refrigerator, toaster oven, microwave, gas stove and oven and coffee maker in the downstairs living area. (The kitchen offers primary pots, pans and utensils. We are happy to loan you what else you might need from one of several kitchens on the property.) We are nestled in behind huge rocks so we do not have general cell phone coverage. We DO HAVE extenders that provide reception for Verizon (and affiliates) and Sprint. The property is peaceful and generally quiet, but there are 4 other folks who live in the compound so you may hear footsteps or an inoccasional whoop when the bats migrate through, or a baby great horned owl or road runner happen by--very exciting things to us country dwellers. We don't generally host large dinner parties but there are those exceptions like 4th of July or the possibility of hearing bits of conversation from an outside sitting area when guests may be visiting one of the other residences. While it is our intention to always be respectful of others, the property has to be maintained and so the quiet may also be broken by brief interludes with groundskeepers or other necessary repair or delivery folks. This garden oasis in the high desert is ready to greet your next visit to New Mexico with open arms. Interaction with GuestsGenerally we have someone to welcome you but that is not always possible. when we are around, we try to check on you but if you need something, one of us is almost always available through email or cell phone Kim (housesitter) (EMAIL HIDDEN) (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or gini at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or (EMAIL HIDDEN) We are delighted to offer our two cents on yummy places to eat, sacred sites to explore and places to leave your money in trade for fabulous turquoise, silver and other artistic endeavors! Truly one of the most amazing places to dine (too many to mention but here are a few...Geronimo's for upscale fabulousness; Jinga for Pan-Asian/Thai; Il Piatto, amazing Italian farmhouse, Vinaigrette, a Salad Bistro; AGAVE Lounge and The Old House Restaurant-great bar and amazing eats; Del Charro Saloon, with perfect margaritas and inexpensive but fun bar food. ) After serious munching you can buy world class art and enjoy its many cultural gifts. If you want to do some hiking and explore the environment, the Cerrillos Hills State part entrance is 3 miles away. the amazing land formations at Tent Rocks are only 40 minutes away. Getting AroundAs we are out of the city limits, you really need a car to stay here. Though the intrepid might be able to get along with a bike! Other Things to NoteAs I have mentioned in other places on this site, there are different floor levels because of the necessity of building around the rock that slopes out from the back wall of the COOP. If you have difficulty negotiating steps or sloping wallways this may not be a good rental choice for you. Several doorways interior doorways are about 74 inches tall. Smoking is not welcomed in the residential area. Parking: After you unload, please part your vehicle in the area to the right of the teepee structure. If it is snowing, and you have to be able to get out, please park your vehicle by the front gate as it is not usually possible to get the ranch plowed in a timely manner.
