The SpaceKai Merle is located just 15 minutes from the centre of Roseau, the capital of The Commonwealth of Dominica and the commercial centre of the country.
Snorkelling, diving, hiking, waterfalls, hot springs, yoga and whale-watching are some of the many attractions within half an hour’s drive.
The house is at an altitude of 390 metres (1280 feet), meaning a cooler temperature. The house and pool face due west, with a great view of the Caribbean, gorgeous sunsets and spectacular rainbows, and sometimes the famous 'Green Flash' just as the sun disappears below the horizon. The night sky – especially the Milky Way - is stunning.
The house stands in one and a half acres. Guests are welcome to pick whatever fruit is in season, (limes, bananas, oranges, guavas, mangoes, avocados, coconuts, paw-paw). Try glasses of coconut water, and when in season, the young 'jelly-nuts'. The garden has many trees other than the fruit trees, such as mahogany, ylang-ylang trees, pacific palms, royal palms, tamarind, moringa………..
The garden has many flowers – oleander, poinsettia, snow on the mountain, heliconia, ixora, alamanda, bougainvillea, ornamental ginger, anthurium, philodendron, lantana, and many more. Feel free to fill the vases with floral arrangements. The gardener comes in twice a week.
The house is built on 5 levels, with 3 terraces. There are plenty of outdoor chairs and tables. You can sit and eat outside on the terraces and not be troubled by lots of bugs even during the evening.
Each of the three bedrooms has a ceiling fan, bedside tables, hanging space and drawers. There are screens on the windows. The master bedroom suite has a king-size bed, bathroom and a study/dressing table area, big enough for two single mattresses on the floor for a couple of kids. There is a hair dryer, iron and ironing board. The middle bedroom has twin beds or a double. There is a shower room and toilet just outside the middle bedroom door. The lower bedroom has twin beds or a double and ensuite shower room and toilet.
The kitchen, living room and terraces
The kitchen is well equipped. The living room has comfortable seating, an audio system, DVD player and smart flat screen TV. There is also an electric piano available upon request against a refundable deposit. The living room has double doors opening out to the main terrace and big windows opening onto the back terrace, always cool and shady, with a breeze wafting in from the mountains to the south. The top terrace is just outside the middle bedroom, with a couch, chairs, table and hammock, with the best views of the Caribbean.
The utility room has a washing machine and cleaning equipment and a rotary clothes line just outside the door. Voltage is 220 throughout the house, using square-pin plugs (as in the UK).
Next to the pool (10.5 x 5.5 metres (35 x 18 feet), 140cm (4 ½ feet) deep) is a shower room and toilet and on the other side the gazebo with chairs and table.
For help and support.
There is always someone living onsite in a separate, self-contained flat to answer your questions. The house will be cleaned before and after each stay, as well as once a week for those staying longer. For more frequent cleaning, this can be arranged at a small extra cost.
A cat lives outside and there is an occasional very good-natured visiting dog. Guest AccessGuests can use any part of the house apart from my bedroom if I'm there! Interaction with GuestsI'm there most of the year. If I'm not, our friend Don lives next door and can give help and support. The NeighborhoodThe neighbourhood is quiet and safe, feel free to walk around, we have several friendly neighbours. Getting AroundThere is a bus service on the main road 5 minutes walk away, but to really enjoy Dominica it's best to hire a car. Contact valleyrentacar and say you are staying with Peter Lemerle at Giraudel.
