The SpaceThe bed is a queen-sized memory foam mattress, positioned above a large storage space for luggage. The Wagon is lit by two solar lanterns and candles for mood. The toilet is located beneath the bench, and "flushed" with cedar sawdust. In the compact space, the table slides out from beneath the bed. The perfect venue for early morning coffee (Costa Rica coffee beans and a hand grinder are provided) or tea (Lemon Balm Tea provided), a light lunch or an evening game of cribbage. After a hike in the nearby mountains, a stroll up Cow Creek, Salmon or Steelhead fishing, or a raft or kayak trip down the Salmon River, you might want to return to the wagon to freshen up. A pitcher of water and guest soaps are provided. There are also large fluffy bath sheets provided, for trips to the Mavens’ Haven swimming hole or the sauna. If you would like to sauna, let one of the apprentices know two hours ahead of time so that they can have it fired up and hot! The sauna and river access is located at the Haven, a half block from the rental. Or perhaps you would prefer starting a little warming fire in the stove (small is the word here, as it takes very little to make the Wagon toasty warm). Perk a freshly ground pot of coffee or brew a cup of tea. Near your wagon there is a small outdoor fireplace, a hammock and a table chair set on the patio, as well as an outhouse with a "lovable loo" composting toilet and hand washing station. Mavens' Haven has a full kitchen for guests who wish to cook meals. The apprentices use the kitchen, as well, so please clean up afterwards. No one lives in the main building, it is a communal space and guests are welcome to make use of it. There are great spaces for reading and relaxing, there. The orchard and gardens produce fresh vegetables most of the year. Guests are encouraged to help themselves when preparing meals ~ there are always fresh eggs in the refrigerator for your use. In the heat of summer, a Salmon River eddy, just below the property, offers a safe place for a cooling dip. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the gardens, the main Mavens' Haven house with kitchen, library and shower privileges. There is also a game room for cards and board games, as well as a downstairs movie area. WIFI is also available. There is no cell phone reception at the Haven or Lucile area. We do have a land line if a phone call needs to be made. Interaction with GuestsThere are usually resident apprentices working the gardens and green houses, tending the chickens, bee hives and the main house. They are energetic and friendly. The NeighborhoodThe community is small. There is a tiny fully functional post office. Getting AroundThe nearest store is Fiddle Creek, three miles south. It is an eclectic fruit stand and hardware store, with regional honey and other gourmet items available. The town of Riggins, which has restaurants and a grocery store is seven miles from the Haven. Other Things to NoteThe Riggins area claims itself as the "whitewater capital of the world". There are float trips daily throughout the summer offered through a wide variety of outfitters.

Only our guests and the owners and their families have vehicle access to a beautiful calm water swimming beach at the lower end of the property. You can hire professional drift and jet boat guides in Riggins or try your luck in the Cat Creek Hole out your front door. Our back yard abuts public lands and for the the hunter it is not likely you will see anyone else but it is steep and rugged, not recommended for those looking for a stroll in the woods. The Salmon River is world class whitewater. You can take one of the most exciting 1/2 day whitewater raft trips in the west from Riggins or for an extended adventure, a 5 day trip thru the magnificent River of No Return Wilderness in relative comfort with one of the many professional outfitters.
