The SpaceOur traditional Maine seaside cape house is on 6 Acres at the end of a peninsula overlooking the mouth of the Machias River on one side and Machias Bay on the other side. Originally built in 1832 as the house of Captain Benjamin Clark, this home has been expanded and fully updated and renovated over the years to provide now over 4000 sq. ft of comfortable living space. A retreat for easy living, the space is a perfect mix of tradition, charm and comfort. This is the first year that we have rented the house with VRBO and (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) and so we have no reviews to share with you as yet, we are sorry to say. But, we can assure you that this is a wonderful place to stay and you will want to return year after year. Capturing 360 degrees of lovely views, if you look east and west , you will enjoy colorful sunrises over Machias Bay and fabulous sunsets over the river. During the day you can relax on the large deck overlooking the fields to the sea, walk the labyrinth spirit path on the point, or contemplate life while sitting on the teak bench under the shade of our massive maple tree. If you watch carefully you will see eagles and blue heron fly north along the shore and field edge every morning and see them return in the afternoon. In the yard you may enjoy croquet on the lawn, play shuffle board, or simply enjoy the gorgeous gardens and water view on three sides of the house. Enjoy this large home featuring magnificent detail in its 'East Room', where you can listen to music, watch TV, play games or simply enjoy the spanning Ocean view before you. Upstairs over the East Room you will find the spacious fully skylit Master Bedroom with its own skylit bathroom. Watch the sunrise in the morning from your bed and dream under millions of stars at night as you look up and see the Milky Way. When was the last time you could see that in all its glory without any light pollution? Then wake up and see the romance of lobster boats and clammers on distant shores and plan on having some for your dinner. Let your day unfold with breakfast in the Morning Room, the formal dining room, or on the deck. During the day or evening entertain yourselves or your guests with a game of pool on the professional sized pool table. Or sit quietly and write or paint and contemplate the beauty of the unspoiled old-world coast of Maine. The view has not changed much since the early 1800's. The SpaceWelcome to Featherbed Island House. Our home is named after the tiny island just off-shore. At low tide, do your own mud-dash and bring your picnic to the island. The views are amazing. Our neighbors told us that it was once a summer camp location for Native Americans back in the day. ******************************************************************* THE PROPERTY is about 3 acres of salt waterfront, abutting several acres of town owned forest. The 200+ feet of shorefront is on the estuary where the river greets the ocean. Much of the yard is rolling lawn - the house is one of the rare homes that have unobstructed views of the water. The yard is filled with blueberry and raspberry bushes, apple trees (with several different varieties of apples). On the side of the house, is a tiny fresh-water pond which is a watering hole for all sorts of wildlife (keep your camera ready). ******************************************************************** Rumor has it that the pirate, Captain Black Sam Bellamy buried his treasure somewhere in proximity to this very property! (But please, no digging!). ******************************************************************** THE FARMHOUSE is not large (about 1600 sq feet), a cottage, really, but was very well designed to be both open, yet give people privacy. -- GREAT ROOM with a two-story wall of windows and soaring ceiling is a comfortable gathering space. Whimsical and colorful touches and art decorate the space. -- THE LIBRARY has french doors - left open to expand the living space of the great room, or closed for more separation. The library holds a vintage wooden phonograph with a selection of 78 records (Dancing anyone? Waltz or perhaps a fox trot?) and an easel for the artist. -- COZY DEN has a flat screen television and dvd player and library of DVD movies. -- KITCHEN AND PANTRY: A well equipped kitchen has it’s own walk in pantry complete with a Belgian waffle maker, juicers, blender, lobster pot (of course!) and many gadgets and gismos for whipping up a gourmet meal. -- THREE BEDROOMS -- TWO BATHROOMS ************************************************************************ Our property is a CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER IN HOSPITALITY; and also certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a BACKYARD WILDLIFE HABITAT - a perfect spot for birders and all nature lovers. We are also located within a Machiasport significant critical habitat for shorebirds. . We are also certified by the American Vacation Rental Owners Association (AVROA). Guest AccessGuests have access to entire home with the exception of garage and basement. Interaction with GuestsMy husband and I are long distance owners (pining away for the time when we can move to Featherbed Island house full time). Check in and check out is 'self-serve'. We are always available, should you need us, via phone and e-mail, and have local service people at the ready, should we need them. The NeighborhoodTHE DOWNEAST AREA: Machiasport is the idyllic central location as the home base for your bold coast Maine vacation. Featherbed Island House is perfectly placed for day tripping to: -- Bar Harbor (90 minutes), -- Acadia National Park (90 minutes) -- artsy Eastport and Lubec (45 minutes) -- Campobello Island (45 minutes) --Bold Coast Trail in Cutler (30 minutes) -- St. Stephen, NB - Canada,s chocolate town (90 minutes) and all of the coves and fishing villages in between. Machiasport is a small, rural fishing village, but just a few miles down the road from the vibrant town of Machias where you will find a supermarket, restaurants, pubs, and the University of Maine. There is no need to fight the summer crowds in Bar Harbor! The SpaceThe Prowhouse was designed by Machiasport poet and sea captain Phil Rose to evoke the prow of a ship. The home's distinctive, angular 'prow' and its floor-to-ceiling windows overlook Howards Cove, a lovely crescent of ocean water and woodlands cupped in the north by unique Jasper Beach. The Prowhouse is perched atop a 130' cliff on the southwestern arm of the cove and is surrounded by pristine forest. In addition to the remarkable view, our guests enjoy complete solitude — there's only one other home remotely visible and it's across the cove about a mile away. The Prowhouse fits 4 people comfortably. The master bedroom has large windows with a dizzying view over the cliff to the ocean floor below. The second bedroom is smaller but is very cozy; it's walls are covered with blue and gold-colored nautical maps of New England. The downstairs has a handsome living room, dining area, kitchen and bathroom. The style of the home's decor is a mix of mid-century modern and nautical aesthetic, i.e. lots vintage furnishings in teak and brass. While the Prowhouse is newly renovated with all modern amenities, you'll feel as if you've stepped into the 50s or 60s when you walk through the door. For instance, you'll find furniture, art, and design by mid-century Modernists Paul McCobb, Norman Cherner, Percival Lafer, and Curtis Jere. A library corner contains a Danish desk, vintage books, an old rotary phone, an Olivetti typewriter, and a classic Thorens turntable. Most of the paintings and photographs throughout the house are unconventional takes on natural and nautical themes. (Don't expect twee paintings of sea captains and lighthouses when the real deal is just outdoors.) When the sun is out and the weather warm, enjoy the Prowhouse's spacious deck and picnic table at the cliff's edge. The Prowhouse grounds are fun to explore with small paths threading through the trees, along the cliff's edge, up stone steps and into small gorges. Guest AccessGuests have access to the entire home, except the cellar. Amenities include a new washer, dryer, and gas stove as well as a coffee maker, grinder, microwave, waffle iron, lobster pot, and all kitchen essentials. You'll find a BBQ grill out on the deck along with chairs and loungers. The bathroom is on the first floor and has a shower (no tub). All linens are included as well as bathroom amenities. Please note: the smaller bedroom, which is right next to the master bed upstairs, doesn't have its own door due to the home's quirky architecture, but when the master bedroom door is shut, the second bedroom becomes private by default. Hope that makes some sense. Interaction with GuestsWe live 7 hours away but are always available by phone. We have a few relatives and some handymen who may be contacted in case of an emergency. Guests are given an access code for the key box. We love to help people plan their stays and have numerous books and folders full of resources at the Prowhouse. Please take advantage of our knowledge and enthusiasm for the area. The NeighborhoodMachiasport, according to the popular travel guide Lonely Planet, is the "real Downeast." So if you stay here, don't expect crowds of camera-toting tourists ( you'll find those 1.5 hours south of us in Bar Harbor.) Machiasport, instead, is for those seeking an intimate and authentic experience of Maine coast culture. The experience first unfolds from the seat of your car; Port Road, leading from the town of Machias to Machiasport, is quiet and unassuming but full of character. The road meanders past marshes, woods, and mudflats; passes stacks of lobster traps, lopsided barns and lobster boats, and resident homes of varying repair and personality. We love trips in and out of town. So will you. Just off the end of Port Road, and down Rose Lane (a quarter mile dirt road through the trees), you'll find the Prowhouse perched atop Rose Ledge. While the home's location is wonderfully idyllic surrounded by acres of trees and wildlife — it's hardly idle; Howards Cove will serve as your own private seaside-theater, presenting you daily with a small parade of lobster boats, seabirds, kayakers, and dramatically expressive clouds. Looking out our windows or standing on Rose Ledge, you'll also see Cutler's distant radio towers that twinkle at night; you'll catch the silhouette of salmon farms against the sea, and, a little farther afield, you'll discover Libby Island Lighthouse whose intermittent flash and foghorn add ambiance to your stay. (Did I say foghorn? Yes, indeed I did. The price we Mainers pay for such traditional New England iconography is, of course, the existence of fog. However, if you're a fan of the Scottish Highlands or misty, medieval forests carpeted in thick mosses and dark tree trunks, you'll find the foggy days an authentic part of the Downeast package. The Prowhouse is surrounded by 50 acres of woods and wildlife, including some rocky beaches complete with caves and vertiginous cliffs. As mentioned before, the Prowhouse is perched upon one such cliff called Rose Ledge (named, like Rose Lane, after the Rose family.) Perhaps "Blueberry Ledge" would be more fitting since in August the ledge is hued in swaths of blueberries. Pick some in the morning and have blueberry pancakes for breakfast. The Prowhouse faces the east so the sunrise is truly spectacular. A clear night sky showcases the Milky Way — or a full moon mirrored by the sea. Beaches: there's a traditional white sand beach 15 minutes away at Roque Bluffs state park. But Howards Cove features more distinctive Downeast geography including a brown sand beach and a cave (melodramatically named Devil's Oven), as well as dozens of shaggy, seaweed-strewn tidal pools and impressive Acadia-esque rock formations — all within walking distance of the Prowhouse. The real gem of our area is, however, Jasper Beach. One of two beaches in the world consisting entirely of polished jasper stones, this surreal beach is just 3+ minutes drive up the road. Feel free to go to Jasper Beach and collect a couple of these handsome stones for souvenirs. Bring a picnic lunch and listen to the strange, burbling sound of the surf as it crashes over the stones. Beyond Howards Cove are the following areas of interest: Starboard Cove: a sleepy, former shipyard good for a morning stroll. Walking distance or short drive from the house. Point of Maine: a slightly longer walk beyond Starboard. More beaches. Quiet and unassuming residential area. More views of the sea. Bucks Harbor: working harbor where you can buy fresh lobster at BBS lobster pound. 5 minutes drive up Port Road. Yurts: search online for The Yurt Foundation for info. A 7 minute drive + 2 mile walk through the woods to a small yurt community. Your hosts can provide directions. Petroglyphs on Clarks Point: ask your hosts about where to search for these historic glyphs made by Passamaquoddy Indians. Roque Bluffs: state park and beach (swimming, kayaking, picnics and hikes) Machias: for restaurants, kayak rentals, local entertainment, and supplies (17 minutes up Port Rd.) Hosts the famed Blueberry Festival in August. Daytrips: - Cutler (for access to the spectacular Bold Coast hiking trails and Puffin tours) - Gardner Lake (fresh water swimming) - Lubec and Campobello Island (This is Canada so bring a Passport! 2800 acre Roosevelt Campobello International Park for FDR's summer home, birding, biking, hiking, boat tours, East Quoddy Lighthouse, and the Bay of Fundy. Fabulous day trip.) - Eastport (charming Easternmost city in the U.S.) - Jonesport and Beals Island (working harbor and nature reserve, golfing) - Moosehorn Nature Reserve (bald eagles and hiking trails) Getting AroundNo public transport. Ways to explore: feet, car, boat. There are bike trails locally so you can bring a bike. Other Things to NotePlease be aware of the following: Due to it's location on a ledge, the Prowhouse is not wheelchair accessible or easily accessible for the elderly or infirm. Howards Cove is a deep water cove meaning there are no stinky mud flats or eternally low tides! But deep water also means strong currents, freezing cold water, and dangerously steep cliffs — one of which the Prowhouse is built upon. If you're an experienced kayaker, this may be an ideal area to explore. But please take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety. Kayaking is entirely at your own risk. We do not recommend swimming in Howards Cove due to the unpredictable currents and cold water. Because of the cold water and steep cliffs, we discourage renters with small children or pets. Also note: while we don't have a TV set we do have wireless internet, lots of books and games and, again, lots of nature and beautiful views. The aforementioned is the reason we passed on the boob tube.

Welcome to the FRISKY FISH COTTAGE. The Frisky Fish is a small (two bedroom) waterfront cottage with seasonal boathouse/bunkhouse/studio located in beautiful Bucks Harbor, Maine. It offers a unique vacation experience — smack in the middle a real, authentic working fishing harbor, surrounded by fishing activity. We'll be honest - due to it's unique location, it may not be the vacation spot for everyone, but it's the perfect place for those looking for an authentic down east Maine experience and adventure. Watch the lobster boats come and go and unload their catch, directly from the front yard of our tiny cottage. At night, enjoy the campfire and toast marshmallows - the lights across the harbor will twinkle along with the stars and, if you are lucky, you may be serenaded by the strains of distant fiddle music from across the water. The Frisky Fish is a unique and whimsical, squeaky-clean, and very comfortable home. Although the cottage is petite, it doesn't take itself too seriously -- it's fun and has the feel of an open and airy beach house with a great room with a soaring ceiling and giant windows. There is a full kitchen with a full size fridge, stove and dishwasher and plenty of cooking tools. The first floor also has a bedroom with a queen sleigh bed with memory foam mattress and first floor full bath across the hall with washer and dryer. The second floor loft master bedroom has a king bed with pillow-top mattress and half-bath. During July and August stays, the cottage includes the 'boathouse'. The boathouse has three twin beds and can be used as a bunkhouse, artist studio, work office, or playroom. (There is no heat, nor bathroom in the boathouse). Be creative. We happily allow many dog guests - our own pup, Phinney, loves his walks along Finn Beach, taking in the sights and sniffs. We are PET FRIENDLY for well behaved COMPLETELY housebroken, NON MARKING dogs (sorry, no cats due to allergies). If your dog may have an occasional accident or will mark in a new environment (and we understand, even the best, most well behaved dogs sometimes behave differently in an unfamiliar place), PLEASE DON'T ASK. We are NOT tolerant of pet accidents and you will be charged accordingly. Dogs must be up to date on all their shots, be on a monthly flea treatment, be spayed or neutered (no females in season EVER please). We do have a non refundable pet fee of $100.00 per week with a one dog limit. The Frisky Fish is approximately 7 miles from the town of Machias with a grocery store, restaurants including the famous, Helens, known for their delicious blueberry pie , The French Cellar - a wine and cheese store, Whole Live Natural Foods & Cafe, etc. The nearest lobster pound is just around the corner and over the hill or visit "Mother Shuckers Lobsters" in Roque Bluffs on your way home from a day at the state park and sandy beach. All of our property is smoke-free (except for the fire-pit, of course). The Frisky Fish can sleep 5 in the main house -- King bed, Queen bed and pull-out twin sofa. Because we are a small village property, we never allow more than 5 guests total at any one time. It's the perfect location for attending the Margaretta Days Festival in June, The 4th of July celebration and the Blueberry Festival in August and then returning to the cottage to enjoy a dinner of local lobster and clams on the back picnic table surrounded by water.

The Frisky Fish is also just under a mile to the world famous Jasper Beach with it's melodious and unique music from the waves hitting the rocks. A must not miss experience. For swimming, the best bet is Roque Bluffs State Park which is a short drive away and offers both a sandy ocean beach and also a fresh water lake. Designed to evoke a ship, this stylish 2BD home overlooks the ocean and is surrounded by 50 acres of woods, wildlife, and area beaches. Complete privacy but only 17 min from town. Hike, kayak, BBQ, explore Downeast harbors, or just relax on the deck. The Prowhouse was designed by Machiasport poet and sea captain Phil Rose to evoke the prow of a ship. About the area: Machiasport, according to the popular travel guide Lonely Planet, is the 'real Downeast.' So if you stay here, don't expect crowds of camera-toting tourists ( you'll find those 1.5 hours south of us in Bar Harbor.) Machiasport, instead, is for those seeking an intimate and authentic experience of Maine coast culture. As mentioned before, the Prowhouse is perched upon one such cliff called Rose Ledge (named, like Rose Lane, after the Rose family.) Perhaps 'Blueberry Ledge' would be more fitting since in August the ledge is hued in swaths of blueberries. Pick some in the morning and have blueberry pancakes for breakfast. .

House Details: 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom Guests have access to the entire home, except the cellar. Amenities include a new washer, dryer, and gas stove as well as a coffee maker, grinder, blender, microwave, waffle iron, lobster pot, and all kitchen essentials. While the home's location is wonderfully idyllic surrounded by acres of trees and wildlife — it's hardly idle; Howards Cove will serve as your own private seaside-theater, presenting you daily with a small parade of lobster boats, seabirds, seals, kayakers, and dramatically expressive clouds. Wildlife seen around the property include bald eagles, seals, deer, porcupine, harbor porpoises, foxes, and even moose. One of two beaches in the world consisting entirely of polished stones, this surreal beach is just 2+ minutes drive up the road. Feel free to go to Jasper Beach and collect a couple of these handsome stones for souvenirs or explore the cove with your kayak. Fabulous day trip.) - Eastport (charming Easternmost city in the U.S.) - Jonesport and Beals Island (working harbor and nature reserve, golfing) - Moosehorn Nature Reserve (bald eagles and hiking trails) Getting Around: No public transport. Ways to explore: feet, car, boat. There are bike trails locally so you can bring a bike. Things to note: Please be aware of the following: Due to it's location on a ledge, the Prowhouse is not wheelchair accessible or easily accessible for the elderly or infirm.

The Frisky Fish is a small tidal oceanfront cottage located in beautiful Bucks Harbor, Maine. It offers a unique vacation experience — smack in the middle a real, authentic working fishing harbor, surrounded by fishing activity. We'll be the first to admit, this may not be a location that appeals to everyone -- it's right in the middle of a working fishing village and you'll be surrounded by all of the waterfront activity of the area, but we think it's fascinating to watch all of the sights in the area. The Frisky Fish is unique and whimsical, stylish, updated and very comfortable home. Watch the lobster boats come and go and unload their catch, directly from this charming property (as well as the occasional skiff filled with sheep passengers - the farm across the water rents out sheep and sometimes they travel via boat). The small cottage feels open with a great room with a soaring ceiling and giant windows. There is a full kitchen with a full size fridge, stove and dishwasher and all of the cooking tools to whip up creative meals. The first floor bedroom has a queen sleigh bed with memory foam mattress and first floor full bath with washer and dryer. Second floor loft master bedroom has a king bed with pillow top mattress, sitting area and half-bath. Beautiful tidal Bucks Harbor is a village in Machiasport, Maine. It is a working fishing village surrounded by boating activity. You can walk just down the road to purchase lobster for dinner and at night, watch the twinkling lights from across the bay. It is approximately 8 miles from the town of Machias with a grocery store, restaurants and bars, wine and cheese store, etc. Bucks Harbor is the working fishing/lobstering village in the town of Machiasport, Maine. You will hear the chug-chug-chug of the boats in the harbor and the caw of the gulls. Both across the water and sometimes, just across the street, you might hear the bahhh of sheep or the moo of a cow (or some fiddle music from across the water). A small forested 'island' with a 1200 sq.ft. cottage nestled in the trees. Our cottage is the only home on the property. The 'island' is accessed by a 600 foot causeway. The causeway beach provides easy launching for small boats. The cottage has wonderful views from the many windows. The interior of the cottage is delightful and comfortable and charmingly appointed. The cottage was built in 1930. We completed a total renovation in 2008. This cottage is 'off the grid', meaning town supplied electricity is not available. We still have all the comforts! Lights, hot water heater, stove, refrigerator and fireplace are gas powered. The house is wired and a quiet generator can be run when electric power is needed. This generator is used also to pump the well to fill the the water tanks. Our caretaker will meet you upon arrival to show you how everything works. Mill point is truly a getaway. There is no television, no telephone, no Internet. But, we have maximum ambiance! Wonderfully peaceful. 'Like' Mill Point at Starboard Cove on Facebook for many more pictures. Life 'off the grid': This cottage is off the grid, so things work a bit differently. Our caretaker will meet with you to show how everything works. It's not too difficult! The house is wired, so when electricity is desired a small, quiet generator can be run. Since the generator is small, you can't run two high drawing items at the same time ( like the hair dryer and vacuum cleaner ). The generator must be run to pump the well to fill the water tanks. Generally, if you're being conservative with water, you would run the generator every other day. Since Mill Point is basically an island, we have a limited area from which the well draws water. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU BE CONSERVATIVE WITH WATER USAGE! We're advocating FIVE MINUTE SHOWERS and conscious use at the taps. RATHER THAN RUNNING THE TAPS, TURN TAPS OFF AND ON AS NEEDED. ( we find this conscious use of water remains with us when we return to our abundant - for now. - resources. It's a good thing! ) Wood Stove: The cottage has a gas fireplace for all to use. The wood stove is only to be used by those who have experience with wood stoves. If you're one of those and interested in using the wood stove, let's have a conversation about it. The wood stove is only to be used with written permission from the owner. Fire wood will be provided for those using the wood stove. Lounging and Kayak rental: Hammocks, numerous beach and deck chairs, a double swing in the shade and a sandy beach are provided for your lounging pleasure. If you can't relax at Mill Point, relaxing might not be in the cards for you! Kayaks can be rented from Sunrise Canoe and Kayak in Machias and they will deliver to the cottage. sunrisecanoeandkayak.com 207-255-3375 Our surrounding area is lovely for kayaking, but do keep in mind that the water is always dangerously cold, tidal currents can get challenging and blinding fog is not uncommon. If you are not an experienced sea kayaker, you should stick close to Mill Point or take a guided tour.

The Famous Machias Wild Blueberry Festival in August! And don’t miss the Downeast event of the year – the annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival in Machias (Aug. 14-15, 2015). This is a fun-filled celebration of the blueberry. The Downeast region produces nearly 85% of the world's blueberries, and the residents of the area are proud of that fact and it shows. There’s no lack of exciting events for everyone at this event – a Main Street parade, blueberry farm tours, magic shows, fabulous food, fireworks, crafts and fine art by regional artists, live music and, of course the blueberry pie-eating contest!
