The SpaceWe've built a tiny room in the woods. Sit in stillness and watch the weather or the wildlife on this 85 acre Land Trust protected farm on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Camping with a roof over your head. Imagine a gypsy hut nestled under a willow tree next to a pond with no other buildings, roads, or lights nearby. That's us! Although 1 or 2 (or 3) guests are typical, there's also plenty of room to camp with a larger group in tents. Background: This shelter started out it's life as an emergency shelter designed to give quick, easy better-than-a-tent space after a natural disaster. It was designed by a local duo, and cut entirely on a CNC router. It flat-packs in a crate for quick shipment in an emergency and can be assembled in a few hours. We've taken this one and decked it out with some locally milled pine siding, a few extra windows, a finished interior, a 30 amp RV circuit (NOT currently hooked up to power!), and fully insulated it. It's a unique shelter in a truly unique spot. It's portable (and it's for sale too.) (URL HIDDEN) and (URL HIDDEN) ... but at the moment, it's ready for you to overnight under the stars. Guest AccessBathrooms are available at the B&B next door. We've installed an outdoor shower outside the guest house at the barn for anyone "glamping". Firewood is stocked on site. Interaction with GuestsWe love to meet the people who travel through, but many come to get away, meditate, or decompress and we respect that too. The NeighborhoodMachipongo (an old Indian name) is home to a great Virginia winery- Chatham Vineyards. The Chesapeake Bay is a walkable/bike-able distance. The Eastern Shore is known for history, birdwatching, and oysters. Local kayak tours are available around the barrier islands or the bayside creeks and inlets. Getting AroundBring a bike! It's flat! Other Things to Notethe STARS! ... you've never seen so many! the FROGS! ... musical bedtime lullaby!

The SpaceOn the lower Eastern Shore of Virginia, down a 1/2 mile private country lane through farm fields and woodlands, arrive at Whistling Swans Ecolodge perched above a tiny salt-water estuary leading out to the Chesapeake Bay. Surrounded only by natural features, you have all to yourself the privacy and beauty of this hidden sanctuary. At any time of the year, a visit to Whistling Swans offers respite from civilization and the cares of the world. A walk down the natural country lane, a paddle in the canoe or kayaks, time spent creating in the art studio, using the spotting scope to view wild birds up close or just sitting out on the screened porch - a visit here will be satisfying and rewarding. Two bedrooms, including fresh linens, share a full size bathroom, each with double occupancy. One bedroom is equipped with a full-size double bed and the other with bunk beds, meant to accomodate two acquainted couples, good friends or a family of four. The living room is nicely and comfortably decorated and furnished for quiet reading or viewing of the state-of-the-art entertainment system. The kitchen is fully equipped but suitable only for vegetarian cooking, breakfast cereal bar included. The dining areas, whether in the house, on the screened porch or on the outdoor picnic patio, has beautiful sunset views over the woodlands and waterfront. Kayak and canoe paddling are a major source of fun at Whistling Swans where the boats and all equipment are supplied. All paddlers may benefit from Capt. Dave's expert safety instruction and guide service. Bring your hiking shoes and bicycles for further exploration of the woodlands around the property and the scenic, flat country roads. Public tennis courts abound and Capt. Dave is available for play as well. Bring your camera and swimwear for spending time out on the secluded beaches of the Chesapeake Bay; picnic coolers, beach chairs and umbrella are supplied. Cooking and dining out on the backyard patio and screened porch is a snap with all equipment and facilities provided for your use in preparing meals outside. As the lodge is surrounded by water and thousands of acres of woods and farm fields, companion animals should remain at your home. The lodge and grounds are not equipped for their security and safety. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is the peninsula that separates the Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean, and settlement here dates back to the earliest of colonial times. Rich in history and natural resources, the Shore is a destination of choice for bird watchers, outdoors enthusiasts, artists, boaters, beach combers, bicyclists, kayakers, photographers and anyone interested in following the roads less traveled. Down-home family restaurants abound, eclectic museums and cultural arts centers inform and entertain, our historic resources are national treasures, and here small town America is alive and well! Guest AccessGuests are welcome to use all of the facilities and accommodations of the property, including kitchen, dining, outdoor patio/screened porch, bar-b-que and beach equipment. Kayaks and canoe are available with free instruction. Feel free to bring your own refreshments and food, but respecting my vegetarian lifestyle please, no meat. Interaction with GuestsI live on the property and will make every effort to accommodate your visit with the minimum of intrusion of your privacy. It's fun to greet my guests with a glass of wine and show them around the place so that they will feel comfortable making themselves at home. Oftentimes my guests will have the entire place to themselves to enjoy while I go to my office to work in Cape Charles. Of course I am available to help make their visit fun and interesting, recommending things to do and places to visit. My days begin and end with paddle excursions, so I am often available to guide my guests around the salt water estuary and the Chesapeake Bay. The NeighborhoodMy neighborhood is very rural but conveniently located only a few miles from services and places of interest. Guests will enjoy a respite from the big city at my secluded retreat on the salt waters leading out to the Chesapeake Bay. Getting AroundGuests should consider bringing their bicycles for exploring the flat country roads of my neighborhood and the nearby small towns and villages. There is no public transportation near my home as it is in a rural area. Other Things to NoteMy household is vegetarian but I welcome visits from folks of all persuasions who will respect my lifestyle. If you want to go out on the water, it's a good thing to bring water shoes for protection against stepping on a stray oyster shell in the water.

Large older beach house nestled in the pines with a view of the chesapeake bay. This house is very remote and removed from the hustle and bustle... This is a perfect get a way for getting back to nature and enjoying some peace and quiet. Very quiet in the winter months, summer is old fashioned fun with water activities for the kids, fishing, riding bikes and hanging out. Cell phones are not a priority, they don't work all the time.

This is a Private apartment with 1 bath, 1 queen bed, 1 fold out queen couch bed, stove, microwave, dishes, pots and pans. All the comforts of home! (AND THEN SOME) Wash and Dryer, Dish Network TV, WIFI, Internet! As I have stated....YOU have your own parking space! This is the second driveway by the garage! You will see a white volkswagon in the drive in front of the garage. You want to drive straight in and this is the room where you will be staying! I can usually be found on the back deck if you should need me for anything! You have free rein of the property and can come and go as you please. The kayaks are here for you to use, as well as the fishing poles! I do ask that you take a life jacket with you if you will be on the water. It is a safety issue and I want all of my guests to be safe. The refrigerator in the apartment is a little small, but there is a standard refrigerator in the laundry room. This is available for you as well. The bait for fishing will be found in the freezer section of this fridge. Yes, you can wash and dry your clothes while you are here. You also have a choice to dry the clothes in the dryer or, (my favorite) on the line and get that clean and fresh scent! There is a key that is available to you so you can lock the door if you leave. It is a very safe place, but you may feel you need to lock the door. This is fine. Just let me know! Grills on site to be used by you. It is a propane and charcoal grill! There is also a smoker! There have been MANY GREAT MEALS cooked on this grill and I am sure many more are coming! There is a golf cart, that is (LEGAL TO DRIVE ON THE ROAD) available for you to use while you are here! As you have seen in many reviews, it is one of the most loved things at Thelma's Dawn! It is here for YOU! Of course there has to be a catch in operating the golf cart. You must be at least 15 years old to be permitted to drive it by yourself, UNLESS there is an adult riding with you! These are not my rules, but the rules of the community. I like to load up the golf cart when I go fishing. I put the poles, cooler, bait, drinks and everything I will need to sit down on the beach for a long time. When I go fishing, I mean business! The outside of the property is a 1&1/2 acre property. We have volleyball, horseshoes, CORN HOLE, (yes, I said it....CORN HOLE) and other games that you can play.....Just ask us! Remember....we are here to make your vacation as special and memory making as we possibly can! We even have TENTS and AIR MATTRESSES that can be used in the event you have more people that want to join you on your vacation! There is a 2 person, 4 person and a 3 ROOM TENT! This thing is BIG! Then you have to remember all of the FISHING, KAYAKING, SWIMMING, PRIVATE BEACH, BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS, BONFIRES and so much more! This is YOUR TIME!! I want you to LOVE IT HERE! So I have been asked how I came up with the name "THELMA'S DAWN". Well, my mother passed away from cancer in 2007. Mom was 68 years old when she was called home. I had a sister, Dawn, who was called home at age 28. She was murdered in January1988. It was fitting to name this beautiful place after the two of them.

Additional photos of the inside and outside of Runaway are available on our web site. Google Runaway at Silver Beach. Here are what our guests are saying about Runaway: Annie B, Ocean City MD 'My husband and I took our 3 kids to Silver Beach for a mid week get away and we are so glad we did! To see our children get so excited over the simplest things was fantastic. The pier offered a great sanctuary for sitting, relaxing and exploring. The home was extremely clean and very comfortable. The outdoors were lovely and we would love to revisit!' Silver Spring, MD. 'My family had a wonderful time at Runaway! The house is pleasant, the hosts warm and genuinely thoughtful about every detail. The best part was the kayaking in a safe shallow area suitable for small children to learn about the water. My kids made friends with endless small critters. We felt like we were a million miles away from work and school--a truly relaxing and wonderful vacation!' Squirrel Fruitland MD 'It's a great place...relaxing, yet plenty of interesting things to see and do. The beds were soooo comfortable. Everyone slept well with the salt breeze flowing through the windows at night, The cove was the center of our activities and the three-wheeled bike was in demand. The bed linens were as nice as any luxury hotel and the house is super clean and nice. I wish I could keep the kitchen, the dishes, and other stuff at my house. The art is the finishing touch. It's like being in a little gallery that's just our style.' J&B Treadwell, Maryland 'A lovely setting, nestled on a saltwater cove in the pines. No traffic, no noise except the wind and water lapping at the shore, with simple scenic splendor at every turn. The days were beautiful and sunny, the evenings cool and with a view of a billion stars. And then there were the sunsets. Wow! The beautifully maintained house itself offers everything in the way of up-to-date conveniences, the beds are extremely comfortable, the rooms inviting, and the hosts rate five stars in my book for their attentiveness, graciousness and friendliness. Some of the world's best (no exaggeration) seafood is within a fifteen minute drive on the rural roads. Fishing at the cove (right in the back yard) and at the beach (just a 5 minute walk away), with lots of variety, including flounder, striped bass (rockfish), croaker, hardhead, and shark. Crabbing, too, both in the cove and the bay. They even provided poles and tackle! My stay was only for a long weekend. I wish it could have been longer, but after having experienced this great getaway, it will be on my next visit, which will be in the very near future. Thanks so much for a really memorable and relaxing time! See you soon!'
