The bush and the timber resource it provided has played a huge role in this area's development and is important to this day although tourism has replaced logging to a great extent. The Bushman's Museum has a good collection of attractively displayed items from the logging era, which will be of particular interest to trampers planning to walk the Hump Ridge or South Coast to the old milling town of Port Craig and the largest wooden railway viaduct in the Southern hemisphere, the Percy Burn Viaduct. Otautau Golf Club Buxton Street, Otautau This undulating 9-hole course takes a little more energy to play than some other flat courses. The course has a number of testing holes and is well worth a look at anytime. Hospitality is a feature of many Southland golf clubs and you should not be disappointed here. Riverton Golf Club Carrol Street, Riverton The low cost green fees make this a must play holiday destination course. You won't be disappointed. The sand based, undulating fairways ensure you seldom have a flat lie and the ever present out off bounds fences help create that cautious approach necessary for a handicap reducing round. Southland's 9-hole course that is the closest example of a links course Rarakau/Bluecliffs Beach Western Southland This is the starting point for the Tuatapere Hump Ridge and South Coast tracks. Hectors dolphins/upokohue can sometimes be seen from the beach, as too can southern right whales/tohorā. Thornbury Vintage Machinery Museum 58 Foster Road, Thornbury The Thornbury Vintage Tractor and Implement Club inc is the oldest vintage tractor club in New Zealand as it was formed over 50 years ago by the foresight of three gentlemen, following the recovery and subsequent restoration of a 1914 Avery tractor. This tractor is proudly displayed and is the flagship of the club. Various items (tractors, machinery, family mementos etc) have been collected and donated to the club over the years, which has resulted in three museum buildings being erected between the mid 60s - mid 90s. Opening hours: The museum is open every Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 from Labour day weekend until Queens birthday weekend. After hour visits can be arranged by contacting the following numbers.
