The SpaceThis is a beautiful and relaxing place. It's beauty changes with each season, but it's lovely almost any time of year. My family has updated the old farmhouse while preserving the history and craftsmanship. Swimming, biking, and hiking are all accessible from the house, and the river, downtown Scandia and Marine on St. Croix are all short car rides away. We have a big indoor dog and three outdoor cats. Guest AccessThe guest will have access to the bedroom, living room, dining room, upstairs bathroom, and kitchen. Full access to yard and lake, can use fire pit with permission. Host's bedroom is really the only space that's off limits. Interaction with GuestsI'm the main writer for two local papers, so I'm gone a lot covering events and then writing about them. My husband also works a lot, so you'll be mostly on your own, but when we're around we'd love to hear what you've been up to and learn more about you. The NeighborhoodI love that we have access to hiking trails in William O'Brien State Park. In the winter they're open to cross country skiers (with a ski pass). The neighbors are friendly and a several have lovely gardens. You'll get a chance to see them if you walk the roads around the lake. Downtown Scandia and Marine are just 2 and 3.5 miles away, respectively. Close enough to bike to, if you're so inclined. Getting AroundThere is no public transit, but a bike is a fun way to get out and explore. Parking is included. If you're coming from the airport, we could pick you up for an extra $50. Other Things to NoteMy cats mostly stay outside, but I do let them in on occasion, especially when it gets cold out. They have beds and a litter box in the porch. My husband and his large dog are usually here when he's not working. Both are sweet, but she usually barks when visitors first arrive.

The SpaceThis home's architectural concept was developed from the existing historic context of Marine on St. Croix, and the rich architectural heritage found is reflective of early colonial building with the later influence of Swedish and Scandinavian immigrants. Interaction with GuestsWe are comfortable interacting with our guests to respond to questions on how to best enjoy their experience. Guests should feel free to reach out to us as needs arise. The NeighborhoodVisit Jackson Meadow once, and you will never forget the landscape: a sea of prairie surrounding a cluster of handsome white homes with a wooded backdrop. The Jackson Meadow site is a 145 acre parcel of high ground in open meadows and wooded hills overlooking the St. Croix River Valley within Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. Jackson Meadow is adjacent to a spectacular amount of open land. Over 190 acres surrounding the clustered housing is protected forever from development through the design process using conservation easements established by the developers, the Village of Marine and the Minnesota Land Trust. Hence, residents of Jackson Meadow have their views and open spaces protected in perpetuity. The development team also gifted a 53 acre parcel of land directly north of the site of Marine for a public park. In addition, the site is adjacent to William O’Brien State Park, which offers approximately 2,000 acres of protected scenic land. Getting AroundThere is not public transportation.

This family cottage, built in the 1930s and full of authentic vintage charm, sits nestled in a grove of white pines, right on the bank of the beautiful St. Croix River. Our portion of the river was the first to be designated a Wild and Scenic River by the federal government in 1972. This halted development on the water; the view of the opposite (Wisconsin) side of the river is of undeveloped forest and river flats laced with sloughs, where eagles, herons, beaver, and other wildlife can be sighted. The house is one of the only properties available for rent on this portion of the river, and the closest to the water. Amazingly, this peaceful, rustic gem is less than an hour from the Twin Cities. Extending toward the river bank is the front porch, which is screened on three sides and offers a view of the river and the pines that tower above. French doors separate this porch from the main living area, which, along with the dining area, is located in one large central room. The sofa is a comfortable hide-a-bed. (Please note that of the 8 people the cottage accommodates, this fold-out sofa sleeps 2 of them.) To keep you toasty on cool evenings, there is a Jotul wood-burning cast-iron stove in the center of the room, and a gas heater in one corner. One small bedroom opens off the living area, in which there are two small single beds, suitable for children and not-large adults. Past the dining area is a charming full kitchen, with front loading washer and dryer under the butcher-block counter space (there's a clothes-line strung between two trees, as well, with clothes-pins provided). An outdoor gas grill is also at your disposal. Off the kitchen, and one step down, is a small hallway leading to the three-quarters (shower, no tub) bathroom, master bedroom (with a full-sized bed at present — we hope to upgrade it to a queen soon), and best of all, a screened in sleeping porch, where guests have the feeling that they are really sleeping out in the woods. This porch has two twin beds that can be joined to make a king. All three bedrooms offer views of the river. As an old cabin, it is furnished eclectically, with simple furniture, including a few unassuming antiques. There is a docking station with speakers for listening to your music/podcasts. With the exception of this and wi-fi (wireless Internet service), the place is low-tech. This house is one of a vanishing breed, a simple, sweet summer place that isn't 'retro' because it's the real thing. Guests have use of a boat landing/swimming area with a dock. (A canoe and two sit-on-top-kayaks are also available for renters' use.) If you have a boat of your own to put in, there is a public boat-launch just upstream from us, and from there you may keep your boat on our shoreline. (Note that we are in a Slow/No Wake zone.) The St. Croix is wonderful for swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, birdwatching, hanging out on sandbars ... and just relaxing and watching the river glide by. Although secluded, the house is one mile from a state park with many kilometers of hiking trails, five minutes from the historic village of Marine-on-St.-Croix, and twenty minutes each to Stillwater, Taylor's Falls/St. Croix Falls, and Forest Lake, which offer rock-climbing, antique shops, gourmet restaurants, paddlewheel river-boat rides, movies. Some guests have even commuted to the Twin Cities while staying here! There is no public transportation in the area — you must have a car. Well-behaved, mellow dogs welcome (and we ask that you please pick up after your dog). No cats. If summer doesn't work out for you, consider post-Labor Day; that time of year is beautiful, too, as the leaves begin to change and everything is even quieter. If you wish to have overnight guests over and beyond our limit of 8 guests, please discuss with us. This house is strictly non-smoking. Note for 2016: Although there is a tennis court, at present it needs to be resurfaced; it's a bit rough and cracked. It is useable by those who are not particular, but until we are able to have it resurfaced, we are not advertising it as a feature. This old family summer place — the first house built on the beautiful St. Croix — has only a large lawn separating it from the riverbank. On its three other sides are woods. This portion of the river was designated a wild and scenic river by the federal government in the 1970s, which halted development on the water; the view of the opposite (Wisconsin) side of the river is of undeveloped forest and river flats laced with sloughs, where eagles, herons, beaver and other wildlife can be sighted. Amazingly, this peaceful, old-world gem is less than an hour from the Twin Cities. Since this house was built in 1912 it has been altered and expanded and updated gradually without losing any of its old-world charm; antiques (and the quirks and idiosyncrasies that come with a country house that has grown organically along with a family over the course of a century) coexist with modern conveniences. The house is great for family gatherings. It features numerous bedrooms (including two sleeping porches): one queen-size bed, two full-size, and five twin (plus a very comfy sofa); a Pack 'n' Play can be provided. There are two-and-a-half baths (including one claw-foot tub and one shower). There is a large, charming, well-equipped kitchen with a separate eating area; a big living room with high ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace; a screened dining porch with a long table; a rear utility/laundry porch; a large, screened gazebo-style front porch and an unscreened deck, both overlooking the river. In the summer, one can sit on the front porch or deck and observe the hummingbirds zooming and hovering and frequenting the flowers and hummingbird feeders; our seed feeders also attract an array of birdlife. A swing hangs from one of the towering, old white pines at the edge of the lawn. There is a shared boat landing/swimming area with dock (and canoe and kayak which renters may use); if you have your own boat to put in, there is a public boat-launch nearby, and from there you may keep your boat on our shoreline. (Note that we are in a Slow/No Wake zone.) The St. Croix river is great for swimming, fishing, canoeing, birdwatching, and hanging out on sandbars. Although secluded, the house is one mile from a state park with hiking trails, five minutes from the historic village of Marine-on-St.-Croix, and twenty minutes each to Taylor's Falls/St.Croix Falls, Stillwater, and Forest Lake, which offer rock-climbing, antique shops, gourmet restaurants, movies, paddlewheel river-boat rides. The small town of Osceola, ten minutes away, offers some of the above as well as weekend antique train rides down the valley and back, about an hour and a half roundtrip. Well-behaved dogs welcome with damage deposit (and we ask that you please pick up after your dog). No cats. This house is strictly non-smoking. More photos available on request. Our house on the St. Croix River, less than an hour from the Twin Cities, was built as a summer home by my parents, on property in the family since 1912. Set very close to the river shore, the house enjoys unparalleled river views and easy access down a short path to the shore, to great swimming, a dock and boat landing. The St. Croix River is a federally-protected National Scenic Riverway, with no development whatever on the opposite Wisconsin shore and hills directly across from our house, so the setting is pristine, quiet, and unspoiled. The water is clean, the bottom is sandy, and the swimming is great, as is the fishing. Available for renters' use is our canoe plus two kayaks. . Originally built in 1940, the house has been added to and updated over the years. The master bedroom suite was added in 1959 and renovated in 1993, and the kitchen was enlarged and fully remodeled in 1993. Facing the river is a flagstone terrace, outside fireplace, front lawn with eating table, comfortable seating, a hammock, and birdfeeders with numerous visitors. Our hummingbirds, goldfinches and woodpeckers are regulars here, and you're sure to hear and see the spectacular pileated woodpecker if you keep the peanut feeder filled. There are three bedrooms with twin beds, plus a screened sleeping porch closest to the river with two more beds. One bathroom has a tub and shower and the other bath has a stall shower. In addition there is an excellent outside shower, great after a swim. The kitchen is fully equipped, has a round eating table plus a pass-through to the dining area of the living room. The kitchen also has a built-in sofa bed for an occasional visitor, or for relaxing while dinner is cooking. The large living room is comfortably furnished, has a bow-front with large windows facing the river, and a wood-burning fireplace. Kitchen and master bedroom both have ceiling fans and there are several portable fans. Close to the house is our nice shady tennis court. Our deep shady ravine offers exploring adventures with a spectacular double waterfall and pristine stream that flows into the river next to the house. Fishing is good up and down the shoreline or from the dock. Next to the property is a public boat-launching ramp, and just a mile south is the William O'Brien State Park, with camping sites, hiking trails, river access with a boat launching ramp and a separate swimming pond with sandy beach. The closest town, 10 minutes south, is the historic village of Marine-on-St-Croix, once a major sawmill for the white pine logging industry during the mid-to-late 19th and early 20th century, when huge log drives were the principal traffic on the river. The larger town of Stillwater,18 miles south on the river, was also a major center of the lumberjack era and today offers antique shops, paddlewheel steamboats and numerous restaurants. The town of Taylor's Falls, known for rock climbing and another Interstate Park, is an equal distance upriver to the north.
