Built between Scenic By-way #177 and the BNSF tracks the Frontier Store House in Matfield Green is as peaceful as can be. It started as a log cabin in 1868. Town “developer” David Mercer, after whom a nearby creek was named, built it and ran a frontier store and post office; a few years later, a stone room was added. Both the log cabin and stone room were preserved when, in the late 1880s, a two-story addition was created. After having stood empty for more than 40 years, the Frontier Store House was beautifully restored and renewed, and became a comfortable very well insulated family retreat and guest house. Only steps away from the tallgrass prairie and open range cattle country, this home away from home is perfect for long weekends and vacations. $ 10.00 DISCOUNT FOR CASH OR CHECK PAYMENTS! Ready for a Flint Hills adventure? The tallgrass prairie surrounding Matfield Green is a national treasure worth discovering. Just north of the little town you will find Pioneer Bluffs historic ranch and The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is 20 miles north in Strong City. Cottonwood Falls is also worth your visit; check out the historic courthouse and don't forget to climb the stairs to the old jail. West of Cottonwood Falls you'll find Chase State Fishing Lake. A wonderful daytrip is a visit to the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, KS. Lots of informative displays and educational exhibits and a great short film about the Flint Hills will keep you captive. Just follow # 177 north. You'll find restaurants and groceries in Strong City and Cottonwood Falls as well as in El Dorado and Emporia.

Settled far out in the Tallgrass Prairie of the rolling Flint Hills, with wide and endless views in all directions from a private hilltop, the True Prairie Home stands up to its name. In all seasons the house is surrounded by the magnificent and unique sea of grass. More than half of the year, the grasslands present the black dots of roaming cattle, everywhere. In late March / early April, the winter grasses are burned, with the prairie fires and their black earth aftermath a sight to see—the more so when knowing the young grasses will sprout up immediately after and color the rejuvenated prairie in fabulous greens. From the house, the prairie opens up a large pasture to hikers, painters, photographers, and dreamers. On all four sides the house has inviting porches for lazy gazing, reading and, again, for dreaming away… All rooms in the True Prairie Home, which was custom built by local craftsmen from native limestone blocks, have huge windows which frame the natural art of the prairie. Handmade walnut doors, cabinets, floors, and staircase, complement the extensive interior stonework. The ample wall space and soaring ceilings provide a backdrop for the truly great, original art collected by the owners. The style presents a tasteful blend of the old days with contemporary design. On the first floor the living area is centered around a beautiful twenty foot stone wall and fireplace; the kitchen is fully equipped with tasteful materials and modern appliances; and the rustic dining table seats eight. The master bedroom features an interior stone wall, a large adjoining bath, and French doors opening to the expansive porch. On the second floor, you will find another large bedroom, bath, and a spacious den; complete with Western art and a queen size leather sleeper sofa. And everywhere you look, the setting will take your breath away and stay in your soul…
